Obasanjo’s letter: Al Mustapha denies training snipers

Former Major Hamza Al-Mustapha yesterday called for an open debate with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in connection with his open letter to Presdent Goodluck Jonathan.

Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, Gen Sani Abacha, spoke on the Voice of America (VOA) Hausa service whilc reacting to the allusion made to him in the letter.

Obasanjo alleged that he (Al-Mustapha) was released from prison to help the president train snipers to assassinate political opponents.

Admitting that Obasanjo did not mention his name, he said he knew that the allusion was about him. “If he has anything to say on me, he should mention me directly or even challenge me and not make allusions,” he said.

Al-Mustapha denied the allegation adding: “I read Obasanjo’s letter and subsequent comments by Nigerians, I would have responded immediately, but I was away in India receiving treatment.

“Perhaps it is Obasanjo and his cronies that are planning what he was insinuating.”

Al-Mustapha added: “From 1974 to the present, a lot of things are buried with all sorts of lies, but all would be revealed one day.

“I urge everyone to pray for Obasanjo to accept my challenge for a public debate so that the truth will come out,” he said.

  • Bayelsa denies $250m stake in power company

The Bayelsa State government yesterday denied acquiring a $250million stake in a private power distribution company, 4 Power Consortium.

In a statement during a briefing, the government said the state only bought two per cent shares in the company.

The Commissioner for Energy, Francis Ikio, did not speak on the amount paid for acquiring the two per cent investment.

He said: “The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has two per cent in the company. The Bayelsa Electricity Company has two per cent. I only know about two per cent. Any body who says it amounts to $250million is peddling rumours.”

The briefing came shortly after the opposition accused the government of spending so much on the two per cent acquisition.

The opposition claimed the government paid the amount to cover other influential persons, who bought shares in the company.

But Ikio debunked claims that the government paid too much for too little.

He said: “To say that we don’t have control over the company is wrong. Control over a company depends on your shares. I don’t know the sum paid. I will restrain myself from talking about the figure. The records are there.”

The commissioner said the state got involved in the deal as an investor, adding that the people would reap the future benefits of the investment.

“Our investment is not wasted. There is hope that 4 Power will change the service delivery in the state,” he said.

Ikio was joined at the briefing by the Commissioner for Information, Markson Fefegha and the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Zuwa Konugha.

Fefegha said details and records of the transaction were domicilled in the Bayelsa Investment Development Corporation.

He assured that the government would deliver adequate power supply in the state.

Fefegha said the government had shown its determination by partaking in the ongoing privatisation of the sector.

On decisions taken to restructure the state capital, Konugha said the executive council had resolved to adequately planned some areas.

He said his agency would henceforth regulate construction of buildings on the AIT Road to Igbogene.

  • Oyo denies demolition of centre

The Director-General of the Oyo State Public Works Department, Mr. Taiwo Akintola, has debunked the claim by the owner of the Jogor Events Centre in Ibadan, Mr. Femi Babalola, that the government demolished his property.

In a statement yesterday, Akintola described the claim as “a fabrication to win undeserved sympathy”.

He said the government did not flout any court order concerning the events centre situated behind Plot 3, Ibadan Municipal Government Layout, on the Liberty Stadium Road.

Akintola said: “Nobody demolished his property. The government removed illegal structures, a fence and a gate house, which he erected on the road linking two communities, Joyce-B and Liberty Stadium.

“The government’s action was right and in the public interest. This administration has great respect for justice and equity, not sentiments.

Babalola’s court order was specifically on his property and the fence of his events centre. It did not include his trespass on a public road. The government will not allow any individual, no matter how highly placed, to do anything overriding the public interest.”

Akintola said residents had been praising the government for removing the “illegal structures” and opening up the road.

Babalola sued the government, seeking an injunction restraining it from carrying out any construction work(s) or trespassing on the property.

  • Govt denies ordering looting of plaza

Authorities of Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday denied ordering anybody to loot or demolish the Mokwe Plaza and Park at Ose Okwodu, Onitsha.

Council Chairman Idu Okosi decried the news report that he ordered the looting of the 100-shop plaza.

On Tuesday, a mob invaded the plaza and looted the shops, chasing away the traders. The traders alleged that the looting was done in connivance with the police and Okosi. Okosi was alleged to be carrying out the instructions of Governor Peter Obi.

The plaza is owned by Bonaventure Mokwe, who is also the owner of Upper Class Hotel, Onitsha.

The hotel was demolished last Friday on Obi’s orders because two fresh human heads, two AK47 rifles, three loaded cartridges as well as a military cap were allegedly discovered in it.

But Okosi denied ever being directed by the governor to send anybody to loot the plaza or demolish it.

He insisted that Obi only ordered that the hotel be demolished.

The Chairman said: “What? Who told you that? It is not true because I have never been to the plaza and park and I don’t know where it is. I have never been there, please.

“We are not demolishing any plaza, please and be informed that nobody has given any instruction for any plaza to be demolished. Any person trying such is a robber. Kindly take note.

“Anybody doing that is on his or her own because the governor did not give me any instruction on that and I have not given anybody such instruction, please.

“Governor Obi ordered the demolition of the hotel and that is what I know and I know nothing about the plaza. Please, count me out of the plaza and park because I don’t know anything about it.”

  • Senator denies allegation on academic records

Senator Hope Uzodimma, representing Imo West Senatorial District, has denied the allegation that he does not possess a West African School Certificate (WASC).

He expressed his readiness to respond to a case filed by a lawyer, Festus Keyamo, challenging his (Uzodimma’s) educational qualification.

In an ex-parte application, Keyamo is seeking the leave of a Federal High Court to apply for an order compelling the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the original copy of Uzodimma’s West African School Certificate.

Uzodimma is on President Goodluck Jonathan’s entourage to China.

His spokesman, Declan Emelumba, said in a statement yesterday that the senator was not worried about the case because his academic records are not in doubt.

He said Uzodinma attended Mgbidi Boys’ Secondary School in Imo State, where he obtained his WASC.

The senator said: “If WAEC is refusing to give Keyamo my results as he alleges, let him go to the school to verify and obtain my result. Still, he can come to me and I will make a copy available to him if he so wishes.

“ As a public figure, security agencies carried out several checks on me before allowing me to contest the senatorial election in 2011 and at no time was I found wanting or my academic credentials in doubt.

“It is, therefore, funny that people will wake up and begin to say things to suit their purpose. I have been accused of certificate forgery by the same people but it has turned out to be unfounded but only in the minds of those that make these allegations.

“This would not be the first time Keyamo will go to court for my sake. In 2010, during the run up to the 2011 general elections he petitioned my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over my credentials and integrity to contest for an elective office.

“He alleged so many things but in the end, my party found these to be false and baseless and I was cleared leading to my winning the election by garnering 85,042 votes.”

Uzodimma alleged that Keyamo was being used by his political enemies.

  • Council chief denies fraud allegation

The Chairman, Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, Julius Oloro has denied allegations of corruption and high-handedness levelled against him by a group, Agenda for Good Governance (AGG).

The Chairman said there was no truth in the allegations, describing them as a design to destroy his person and administration by his political opponents.

“I know where these allegations are coming from, there is no truth in all the allegations and my administration has been open and transparent in all we have done. I have invited the general public to come to Ojodu to verify if there is any substance in what my critics are saying before they judge me guilty or innocent,” Oloro said.

In a widely circulated report, the AGG accused Oloro of financial recklessness, gross incompetence, disrespect to party leaders and physically assaulting two workers of the council Deji Ogunlana and Wale Olusesi.

In a swift response, Oloro said the allegations were “wicked fabrications by my detractors”, who are bent on destabilising the peace of the local government.

” I know the two people they alleged I assaulted, please you need to also ask them if there is any iota of truth in the allegations that I beat them up. They will testify whether it is true or not. I do not understand why people will go to this extent to destroy another person. My administration is open and transparent, I have hidden nothing from anybody, my priority is to do the work Ojodu people have given to me and they are the ones who can judge my performance,” Oloro said.

He said the empowerment of the youth in his council was of paramount importance adding that is why his administration initiated some empowerment programmes on coming to office in October 2012.

“Today, we are empowering 40 people in our local council with the sum of N10, 000 each. This is to enable them engage in small scale trading. We discovered that there are people who can start businesses with as little as N2, 000. So we thought if they could do that, we should provide the sum of N10,000 and after six months we will evaluate the success of this project and know the way forward,” he said.

He said his council engaged youths positively through skill acquisition and sports through the ‘Oloro Football Tournament’. ” In the area of education we have encouraged our teachers through the provision of teaching materials. As you know the winner of Spelling Bee competition is from our council and even the second prize winner who is a Primary six student.”

The winner Boadley JuwonAfolarin is a Senior Secondary(SS2) pupil of Omole Grammar School while the second prize winner is 10 year old, Olayinka Ogunenika, a primary six student of Estate Nursery &Pry School, Oke-Ira.

  • Rivers PDP crisis: Speaker denies issuing open letter to Jonathan

WHO authored the open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan in which his attention was drawn to the threat to the lives of top government officials in Rivers State, including Governor Rotimi Amaechi and House of Assembly Speaker Otelemaba Dan- Amachree.

Dan- Amachree, who allegedly wrote the letter and subsequently invited for interrogation by the police, denied knowledge of the controversial document.

Count me out, the speaker told Justice Adolphus Enebeli of the State High Court in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

He told the judge that neither him, nor any government official knew anything about the document, which according to him, bore no signature.

The controversial document, which raised allegations of insecurity and threat to the lives of some government functionaries in the state, was credited to Dan-Amachree.

It (document) was prominent in the media last month.

In the document entitled: “Open Letter to Mr. President”, the speaker reportedly raised alarm of plans to kill Amaechi, himself and some other government officials, loyal to the governor.

Also within the period, the Chief of Staff (CoS) in Government House, Tony Okocha, raised another alarm on plots by some persons to introduce bombing into the crisis rocking the local chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Okocha alleged that the private homes of perceived loyalist of the state governor were the targets.

Commissioner of Police Mbu J. Mbu described the allegations as serious and invited both the speaker and the CoS for more clarifications.

In a news briefing in Port Harcourt, Mbu said: “The speaker has raised very serious issues about security threats and about the attempt to assassinate the governor (Rivers), His Excellency and Chief Security Officer of the state.

“That is a very serious issue and the speaker of the state House of Assembly will be invited and will be interrogated to give facts and throw more light into this information.”

Gripped by fear of arrest, the duo went into hiding for a while and later reappeared before the judge to seek an order to restrain the police from inviting and arresting them over the alarms linked to them.

They accused the police of a ploy to infringe on their fundamental human rights and urged the court to stop them.

They were asked to serve parties in the suit – the Inspector- General of Police (IGP), Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGP), Zone Six, State Commissioner of Police (CP) and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for their defence.

The defendants in their counter affidavits said the submissions by the applicant were invitation to the court to stop the police from inviting a citizen for investigation.

Addressing the court on the application at the sitting yesterday, Dan-Amachree, represented by Emenike Ebete, told the court that the motion bordered on the suspicion that the fundamental human rights of his client was going to be infringed upon by the police.

Ebete urged the court to go ahead and give the order to restrain the police from inviting and arresting the speaker, saying he was innocent of the allegation against him.

He said the application was based on the invitation by the police to his client to answer to the charge for which he did not make any report on.

Ebete noted that the offence linking Amachree to the charge (the document), was his position as the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which suspended the Executives of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, and the failed efforts by the Felix Obuah-led PDP executive committee in the state to have the suspension order reversed.

Dan-Amachree’ lawyer accused Obuah of instigating the police to form a biased opinion against his client to enable them effect his arrest.

He stressed that none of the government officials wrote or made any report of threat to live to either the police or the President, including the speaker.

The counsel told the judge that “the applicant was invited by the police to answer to the charge for which no report was made against him.

The affidavits before the court are meant to explain that the offence of the applicant was that he suspended elected officials of Obio/Akpor council in his capacity as speaker and that he declined Obuah’s order to vacate the suspension.

Ebete said: “This was the bias upon which the speaker was invited by the police. The open letter addressed to President Jonathan was not signed by anyone.

“There is no nexus on the document for which the speaker is being invited. There is no nexus between the document and the applicant.

“Neither my client (the speaker), Amaechi or any of the government officials made any report to the police, or president Jonathan on threat to their lives. Apart from the document there is no other reason the police is trailing the speaker.

“The position of the law is that any document that is not signed is baseless. I urge the court to discountenance the document and not rely on it.”

The judge adjourned the case till July 29 for judgment.

Earlier in the case involving Okocha Mbu and three others, the court ordered that the third respondent, the President of Port Harcourt club, Sylvester Wiyioma be served by pasting the writ of summons on the main gate of the office at Forces Avenue in Port Harcourt.

Okocha, representative by Vincent Uchendu, made an application seeking an order to serve the party by substituted means. He informed the court of his difficulties to effect normal service on him (3rd respondent).

He alleged that Wiyioma was dodging service.

The judge adjourned the matter till August 5, for hearing.

  • Ogunbiyi denies Okeke’s allegation of interference

Ogunbiyi denies Okeke’s allegation of interference

The last may not have been heard of the allegation by retired Justice Okechukwu Okeke that Justice Clara Bata-Ogunbiyi attempted to influence his decision in a case involving the latter’s daughter, Mrs. Funmi Amadi.

Justice Ogunbiyi has denied that she ever contacted Justice Okeke, formerly of the Federal High Court, Lagos, either directly or indirectly on any matter.

Justice Ogunbiyi’s denial is coming as a rights advocacy group, Access to Justice (AJ), urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the allegation.

In an explanation note sent to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Justice Ogunbiyi accused Justice Okeke of not being truthful.

She argued that Justice Okeke misled the world into believing that the NJC issued him a warning on the basis of ex-parte order he gave in a case involving her daughter, Mrs Funke Amadi (nee Ogunbiyi).

“It is extremely ridiculous, absurd and malicious for Justice Okeke to insinuate that it is the forgoing circumstances that formed the basis for the warning letter given to him on three petitions deliberated upon by the NJC, which I know nothing about.

“I wish also to state that the alleged petition by the residents of 5A George Street, Ikoyi, to the NJC has nothing to do with me,” Justice Ogunbiyi said.

She denied asking her daughter to see Justice Okeke and that she did not try to influence her on any matter.

She admitted contacting the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, after her daughter had narrated her ordeal following the ex-parte order issued by Justice Okeke for the sealing off of her daughter’s residence.

Justice Ogunbiyi said: “In view of the grey areas surrounding the case, I, therefore, contacted Justice Ibrahim Auta, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and narrated my daughter’s ordeal and, therefore, enquired about the laws governing AMCON case. He remarked that the laws are draconian in their application and he promised to send me a copy, which he did a few days later.

“On the allegation of the encounter between Justice Okeke and my daughter, Funke in his chambers, I wish to state categorically that I never instructed her to see Justice Okeke for any reason whatsoever. If she had done so in company of the evicted residents of all the flats, she acted on her own volition. She is an adult, a married woman with a family and she has a right to protect the interest of her family.

  • Nasarawa police chief denies prior knowledge of village attack

Nasarawa State Police Commissioner Umar Shehu yesterday denied having a prior knowledge of the attack by some gunmen on Rukubi village, Ekye Development Area of the state.

Over 40 persons were reportedly killed in the village last Wednesday by gunmen, who were said to have dressed mobile police uniform and armed with sophisticated weapons.

They allegedly attacked the village and also abducted two residents – a man and a woman.

A statement yesterday in Lafia, the state capital, by police spokesman, Cornelius Ocholi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), denied a media report, which alleged that Shehu ignored a prior notice on the attack.

It described the report as “false, malicious and mischievous” and aimed at bringing the name of the police chief into disrepute and cause disaffection between him and the people of the area.

The statement reads: “The (police) command wishes to categorically state that the commissioner of police did not receive any report prior to the attack on Rukubi community. There was no attack on Olam Farms (a Dutch agro-based company), as claimed, and (there was) no shootout between the police and Fulani herdsmen before the incident.”

The statement said Shehu personally led two units of riot policemen and restored normalcy to the affected area.

The crisis in Ekye Development Area and parts of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has been reoccurring since the past years.

Several residents of the areas have been forced to take refuge in surrounding villages.

Despite a joint committee by the Nasarawa and Benue state governments to bring the situation under control, the crisis has not abated.

Several displaced persons are scattered in surrounding but their attackers have not been identified.

Also, Deputy Governor Damishi Luka has visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment. He promised to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice soon.

The deputy governor said the state is making efforts to ensure that peace returns to the affected area.
