Diri urges citizens to prioritise thanksgiving

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has urged the people to take thanksgiving to God seriously for what He has done and is still doing.

He gave the advice yesterday when he attended the 10th edition of the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area annual thanksgiving in Sampou (his country home).

The governor thanked the visioner of the event, Apostle David Aggrey, the General Overseer of the Royal House of Grace International Church and other organisers, for putting the programme together.

He said the people of Kolokuma/Opokuma had every reason to thank God for all He had done, beginning from championing the struggle for the emancipation of the Niger Delta by the late Major Isaac Adaka Boro, for the creation of Bayelsa State, and now to producing a governor (himself).

Diri urged the people to take the thanksgiving seriously, saying it attracted the blessings of God by always thanking Him.

    • Restates call on IGP to recall special forces

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said the state government’s indefinite suspension of chiefs and the youth body in Bassambiri community in Nembe Local Government Area of the state is still in force.

Governor Diri also restated his call on the warring factions in the community to toe the path of peace, promising that his administration would do everything possible to bring lasting peace to the community.

Diri stated this yesterday when the judicial panel of inquiry set up to look into the communal crisis presented its report to him in Government House, Yenagoa.

On February 15, 2023, a crisis had erupted in Nembe-Bassambiri, which claimed three lives, hence the panel was instituted on August 15, 2023 to look into the crisis and proffer solutions.

The governor noted that the crisis bedevilling the community was three-pronged but was more political than economic or traditional.

He stressed that no society could develop in an atmosphere of continuous violence and brigandage.

The governor set up a five-man committee to review the report of the panel within two weeks and to advise him on its implementation.

The review committee is headed by Secretary to the State Government, Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, with the Acting Chief of Staff, Dr Peter Akpe, the Head of Service, Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Alabo Ozubide, as members.

He stated: “For any one life lost, it is important to us as a people. We assure you that we will look at your recommendations and implementation will be done to the letter.

“Let me use this opportunity to call on my brothers in Nembe-Bassambiri that it is time for everybody to toe the path of peace. Peace is priceless. We cannot continuously be in a fratricidal war, fighting among ourselves.

“You can trust this government. What we want is lasting peace. With the calibre of people appointed into the committee, l am very sure that we will find the solution.”

The governor also called on the inspector General of Police to re-deploy the Special Forces from the community in order to restore peace.

He noted: “We all must put our hands together so that all parts of our state will be peaceful. Today, we almost have an occupying police force in Nembe-Bassambiri. A special force from the Inspector-General of Police has been there before and after last year’s governorship election.

“We are told that the force was there to bring peace and normalcy to Nembe. But Nembe was far from war before the special force arrived. I believe that there are other states in the country that need the services of the special force more than Nembe-Bassambiri today.

“l call on the Inspector-General of Police to reconsider and ensure the posting of those special forces to very troubled states where lives are lost on a daily basis so that rather than being an occupying force in Nembe-Bassambiri, they will be of more help to Nigeria.”

Diri urges Fed Govt to review maritime assets protection policy

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has called on the Federal Government to review its policy of using non-state actors in its effort to secure the maritime environment of the country.

Sen. Diri, who expressed concern that the continued use of such unconventional security agents might cause greater security challenges in future, called for the strengthening of the Nigerian Navy to perform its constitutional responsibility.

He spoke yesterday during a visit by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Represented by his deputy, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the governor said individuals and groups should not be allowed to execute oil pipelines surveillance and protection contracts independent of the supervision of conventional security agencies.

He said safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters is the exclusive preserve of the Navy and should be supported in every way possible to enable it effectively secure oil and other critical national assets in coastal communities.

“Already there have been reported cases of violation of human rights and security breaches by surveillance contractors in local communities around the state,” he noted.

He took the opportunity to commend officers and men of the Nigerian Navy serving in the state for demonstrating professionalism in discharging their duties, which he noted, had helped Bayelsa to remain one of the most peaceful states in the country.

Calling on the Navy to sustain the tempo, Diri suggested to the Chief of Naval Staff to give official recognition and rewards to the officers for their professional efficiency so far.

The governor said: “The cry of the Bayelsa State Government is that non-state actors are not the best to protect our oil assets. In the name of oil pipeline protection contracts, most of them violate the rights of our people in our localities.

“Let us not do things that we will regret as a country tomorrow. What the Federal Government is doing right now is like cutting the nose to spice the face.

“You don’t need to cut off your head because you have rotten teeth. You simply look for took brush. You will be surprised that we will get to a point where some of these non-state actors will start to challenge.

“I will suggest that the Nigerian Navy should be allowed to play that role to protect our critical oil assets. The Federal Government should therefore rejig or reinvent its security strategy to secure these assets.”

Continuing, he said: “Bayelsa State and the Nigerian Navy are one. The Navy is part of us, and we are part of the Navy.

“The naval officers in Bayelsa State are very professional in their duties. I have to commend them for that. They have helped make Bayelsa one of the safest states in Nigeria.

“The Navy should give these officers an official recognition and reward them accordingly for their high professional efficiency.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, said the Nigerian Navy could not do without Bayelsa State in view of the state’s strategic location and the critical oil and gas facilities it is hosting in the Niger Delta.

Admiral Ogala, who described the recent electoral victory of the Governor and his Deputy as a true victory for the people of Bayelsa, appealed to the government and people of the state to sustain their goodwill towards the Navy for better services.

The CNS particularly called on oil bearing communities to see the Navy as a friend and to show cooperation in the provision of credible information to curb criminality in the state.

He said: “Your victory is a victory for the people of Bayelsa State. You have done well in your first term and you will even do more in your second term.

“Bayelsa and the Nigerian are partners because Bayelsa is in the core of the Niger Delta. Bayelsa holds a lot of resources in oil and gas, and the protection of these assets is a key role of the Navy. The Navy’s duty is to create an enabling environment for the oil companies to produce their maximum output, and there has been significant improvement so far in the last six months.

“This is possible with the cooperation of the Bayelsa State Government  and the people; the Bayelsa State Government has also provided resources to the Navy. So we have a cordial relationship with the oil-producing communities, and we need more cooperation in intelligence and information to curb criminality around the facilities.”

The Chief of Naval Staff was accompanied on the visit by several top-ranking naval officers, including the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral S.J. Bura, and the Commander of NNS Soroh, Commodore A.O. Ojebode.

    • Applaud Bayelsans for re-electing gov

Political allies of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, under the auspices of Friends of Senator Douye Diri (FSDD), have urged the opposition candidates in the November 18, 2023 governorship poll to rally round the governor to enhance the accelerated development of the state.

The National President, FSDD, Prince Bodi Arerebo, who made the appeal on Saturday at a press conference in Yenagoa, the state capital, said even the opposition knew that Governor Diri won the last poll by a landslide and should embrace the governor to move the state forward.

Arerebo applauded the people of Bayelsa for re-electing Governor Diri, saying that God is the person that appointed Diri apart from him being a good material, a good product and good candidate for them to sell.

The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated: “We advertised Governor Diri and showcased him to Bayelsa people and they saw that he is a very good product and they all voted for him.

“So at this first press conference after the victory of Diri, we really want to thank Bayelsans. That is the reason it is good to have a good name. That is the reason it is good to lead a good life because definitely there is a reward.

“The other person doesn’t have this kind of good name. All of us know the type of person he is. He is not hiding it and he is not ashamed of it. We thank God that he gave us somebody that will pilot the affairs of Bayelsa in the next four years from February 14, 2024 when he would take the oath of office.

“Bayelsans in the next four years should expect superb development. There is going to be a massive development across the entire state. That is what he (Diri) promised people like us who are insiders. The moment he takes the oath of office for a second term, he would hit the ground running and the state would be happier for it.”

Speaking on the plans by some opposition flag bearers to challenge the outcome of last election in court, Arerebo said Diri would still emerge victorious because he won the election fair and square and his victory is incontrovertible.

He noted: “At Diri’s first election, he won all the suits against him and that made people of the state to nickname him ‘Miracle Governor’. In this past election of November 18, 2023, he won it by a landslide. The gap was overwhelming. That same God is still in existence.

“We know that even at the court, victory is sure. Despite all attempts by the opposition to rig the election, Diri won them. Therefore, at the court we will win again and we will celebrate.

“We wish to tell all the opposition candidates to know that the election has come and gone and we should work together so that the development we are agitating for will cut across the entire state. Let us learn how to forgive and forget and sheathe our swords for the good of the state.

    What Bayelsans expect from Diri

SIR: One can say without equivocation that Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri’s push for developmental politics richly rewarded his second term bid.

The governor’s focused and prioritised projects performance during his first tenure in office, no doubt, gave him a clear lead and ultimate victory at the Saturday November 11, 2023 governorship election in the state.

In addition to that, the season of high profile and other critical stakeholders and grassroots endorsement for the governor’s second term bid prior to the November election, signalled Governor Diri’s ultimate victory at the gubernatorial poll.

We recall that a former president and an illustrious son of Bayelsa State, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was among the many who endorsed Governor Diri’s second term bid based on his visionary leadership in managing the affairs of the state.

Jonathan had re-echoed reasons for endorsing Diri’s candidature during the recent yuletide visit of the governor and a high-powered delegation to his residence. According to the former president, Governor Diri deserved to be re-elected for his commendable developmental efforts, particularly for ensuring peace and stability in the state.

Jonathan spoke glowingly of Governor Diri’s efforts in reasonably reining the excesses of cult groups, and other societal ills inimical to peace, security and uninterrupted development.

It was for this and other enviable reasons, Dr. Jonathan reasoned, that he saw in the governor and his team, credibility and visionary leadership that needed to be encouraged to do another four-year term in office.

He therefore charged Governor Diri to do more to meet the expectations of the massive support base for his administration, adding that: “To whom much was given, much was expected”.

Meanwhile, Governor Diri, in his New Year message, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment towards the overall development of the state.

Going forward, he said, his administration would actively engage communities irrespective of political affiliation in order to achieve the collective holistic developmental aspirations of the state.

The governor unfolded some mega projects captured in the state’s 2024 budget which include the construction of an ultra-modern stadium, a renal centre at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital at Okolobiri as well as administrative block for the Primary Healthcare Board.

Governor Diri said that his administration would also kick-start the state’s industrialisation through his recent assent to the Bayelsa State Electricity Law 2023, which he said, promises to be a game-changer for improved power supply in the state.

He stated that, under the new electricity law, licences would be issued to private investors while collaboration with existing franchises would be enhanced to expand electricity access in underserved areas.

Governor Diri therefore, called for collective effort and the unflinching support of citizens of the state for her accelerated progress in the New Year and in sustaining the achievements so far recorded.

There is no doubt that Governor Diri has a great task ahead of him. With the audacious on-going three senatorial roads project and other people-oriented socio-economic and infrastructural transformation schemes, together with the new additions in the state’s 2024 budget, the governor should hit the ground running. The commitment of his administration in salvaging a people deeply stressed and disoriented by the turn of global financial and economic downturn, and monumental crisis, notwithstanding, citizens of the state expect the governor to turn around their depleted fortunes.

It is our ardent hope, therefore, that Governor Diri would rise to the occasion and give the people of the state the much-needed holistic development leap, and a reason to reaffirm their trust in his leadership of the state, the next four years.

    Why I backed Diri’s re-election, by Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he owes no one apologies for supporting the re-election of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri in last November 11 off-cycle election in the state.

He said it was the right thing for him to do as Diri had the support of majority of Bayelsa people to continue in office.

Jonathan spoke when Diri led a high-powered delegation to the home of the ex-President yesterday in Yenagoa, the state capital, for the Yuletide homage.

A statement by Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said the wife of the former President, Dame Patience Jonathan, was also on hand to receive the governor and his entourage.

Jonathan said he publicly endorsed Diri’s candidature during the campaigns because of his visionary leadership which he demonstrated in handling the affairs of the state.

The ex-President said the governor deserved to be re-elected for his developmental efforts, particularly for ensuring peace and stability in the state.

He said: “I did what I did during the governorship election and I have no apologies to anybody because I know that the governor and his team were doing very well, especially in the area of peace and stability of the state. At a time, I became very worried.

“I have not said others did not do well. After all, I was also governor for a little less than one and a half years and also had my challenges.

“Since Diri came on board, the excesses of cult groups, particularly in Yenagoa, have reduced reasonably. If we must move forward, first and foremost, we must handle the issue of security in order to attract investors. I saw that the governor and his team have a vision and he needed to be encouraged to do another four-year term.”

Jonathan urged Diri to do more to meet the high expectations of the massive support base for his Prosperity Administration.

He added: “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

Responding, Diri expressed appreciation to the former President for his support and endorsement.

The governor said these contributed to the victory the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded at the poll.

He said: “Your endorsement of a sitting governor was more than billions of naira. And so, having secured that endorsement, we were very sure of victory. We are here to say a big thank you as that has brought stability in the state.

“So, with the kind of peace and security we have in our state, Bayelsa is ready for private investors to come in.”

Diri also expressed the optimism that Jonathan would have more roles to play in reconciling dissenting Nigerians and other Africans to ensure peace and development.

The governor also thanked President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a peaceful, free and credible election in the state.

Dignitaries who accompanied the governor on the visit were National Assembly members, like Senator Konbowei Benson (Bayelsa Central), Fred Agbedi (Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency), Rodney Ambaowei (Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency), and Oforji Oboku (Kolokuma/Opokuma/Yenagoa Federal Constituency).

Others were Senator Nimi Barigha-Amange; one-time Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Ishiaku Bawa; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alabo Gideon Ekeuwei, and members of the State Executive Council (Exco).

No rift between Dickson and me – Diri

Bayelsa state governor, Douye Diri, has commended the exemplary character of his predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, saying the former governor does not act like a political godfather.

Diri also said their relationship remains cordial and unbroken.

The Bayelsa governor stated this at Toru-Orua, Senator Dickson’s hometown in the Sagbama local government area of the state during his usual Christmas visit.

He said since leaving office in 2020, the former governor had supported him and had not been overbearing.

Diri’s chief press secretary, Daniel Alabrah, quoted the governor as saying that the unity between him and the immediate past governor, who now represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, had contributed greatly to the peace and development of the state.

He recalled their long-standing relationship from their days in the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and as commissioners during the Goodluck Jonathan administration in the state and expressed the optimism that the bond would remain strong.

Diri again expressed gratitude to Dickson for his role in his emergence as his successor and also for his support in the November 11 governorship election in the state.

The governor equally stressed the need for unity among leaders and the people of the state while assuring the people that his second tenure would be dedicated to moving Bayelsa to greater heights.

He said: “Today is another day for merriment. You all remember in our first year, we had some challenges. So it was difficult for us to do anything meaningful that year. But from 2021, we instituted this visit and it has continued.

“There can be nothing more refreshing than the fact that we are alive and together today. We all know the history of successors and predecessors in Nigeria but the story in Bayelsa is different.

“From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you for tolerating me and for accepting me. This is the time people want to play godfatherism but you are not doing that. We have worked together and shared a lot in common and I am sure this should be an example.

“In politics, if you do not tolerate and accept people, you will not move forward. Today we are happy because we all worked together as one. We went into the election united.

“Let me again seize this opportunity to thank the people of Bayelsa. You have done well to keep the peace in our state. To all those we might have offended, please forgive us.”

In his remarks, Senator Dickson lauded Governor Diri for sustaining the visit since it was initiated three years ago, describing it as refreshing.

Dickson said the visit typifies brotherliness, love and peace and called on the people to imbibe a similar spirit of togetherness to move the state forward.

While congratulating Diri on his electoral victory, Dickson commended him for his achievements in office and expressed confidence that he will do more during his second tenure.

He said: “In spite of your tight schedule, you always find time to visit. This is the third time and we appreciate it. With the consent of the leaders here, on January 3, 2024, subject to your consent, we will visit you in Sampou.

“This visit is the first after your re-election. Although we had visited to congratulate you, it is still my duty to congratulate you and your able deputy on your resounding victory.

“Our state has made progress due to maturity and brotherliness and it is our hope that the state will continue to be stable.”

Governor Diri during the State Prosperity Weekly Exercise , heart-warmingly received the Para Athletes  yesterday in a special recognition after Bayelsa State finished first position with 30 gold, 24 silver and 20 bronze.

In his remarks,  Governor Diri congratulated them for making the State and the Ijaw Nation proud by their spectacular performance, describing  their  achievements as fulfilling.

He  stressed  that despite their current physical conditions , they were able to prove that there’s indeed ability in disability.

“Winning the Para Games back to back and so on behalf of your State I say congratulations, you have made your State proud and you have brought a very good image to Bayelsa,” he said. “All over Nigeria they know in Para Games you can’t challenge Bayelsa State, so we want to thank you and urge you to keep it up because you have done it twice and next year would be better.”

    • Swears in two judges

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has again made a case for the practice of true federalism and restructuring of Nigeria in order to determine the real viability of states.

He spoke yesterday during the 124th state executive council meeting at the Government House, Yenagoa, against the backdrop of a recent report on the economic and financial viability of states.

Recall that the Economic Confidential, in its 2022 Annual States Viability Index (ASVI) report, listed Bayelsa among six states that were allegedly financially insolvent.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the governor faulted the report, saying it focused on only federal allocation and internally generated revenue to determine a state’s viability without considering how their resources were being expropriated by the Federal Government.

He insisted that Bayelsa was not financially insolvent and that such reports came from “prophets of doom.”

Diri said Bayelsa, with its huge oil resources, is one of the richest states, but that the lopsided federalism in practice in the country had deprived it from controlling its resources and natural wealth.

He described as unacceptable the situation where states’ resources were being taken by the government at the centre, leaving the sub-nationals to depend on monthly allocation.

He said: “The prophets of doom will always make predictions that Bayelsa State is insolvent and I think they need to stop those predictions.

“We have called for a true and structured federalism. One of the richest states in Nigeria in terms of resources is Bayelsa. By no means will anybody convince me that our state is insolvent.

“We have been saying return our resources to us and let us compare what Bayelsa has with other states and see if we are one of those that cannot generate internal revenue.

“Now we depend on federal allocation where our resources have been expropriated, taken to Abuja and shared to other states. And you call us a poor state. This has to stop.”

Before the meeting, Diri swore in two judges to enhance the administration of justice in the state.

They are Amaebi Orukari, who was sworn in as a state High Court judge and his counterpart, David Opokuma, as a judge of the Customary Court of Appeal.

The newly judges were formerly chief registrars in their courts before the elevation.

Delivering his charge to the jurists, Diri said his administration had made modest strides in providing an enabling environment for the state judiciary to be independent.

Diri orders probe of Bayelsa United’s kit sponsorship deal

Bayelsa State government has said that reports of the state-sponsored football team, Bayelsa United, signing a new shirt sponsorship deal with Halkin Exploration and Production Limited for the rest of the 2023/24 Nigerian Professional Football League season are embarrassing.

The government said it neither approved nor endorsed such a deal for the team in the ongoing football season.

Halkin Exploration and Production Limited had been at the centre of the controversy surrounding the alleged acquisition of Oil Mining Lease 46 (also known as the Atala Oilfield) belonging to the Bayelsa State government.

Governor Douye Diri kicked against the revocation of the OML 46 licence by the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in April 2020, describing the oilfield as a “prized asset of the state.”

A statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, yesterday said the reports about the kitting deal were mischievous as they were presented as having the governor’s consent.

The statement noted that while Governor Diri has been a strong advocate of private sector investment in sports, his administration would however not accept any arrangement that ignored due diligence and due process.

The statement read: “The State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, expresses surprise and embarrassment over reports of a new kit sponsorship deal signed by the state-owned football team, Bayelsa United.

“The governor wishes to unequivocally place on record that he is not aware of any such deal involving Bayelsa United and Halkin Exploration and Production Limited.

“Governor Diri has consequently directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Daniel Igali, and the Bayelsa United chairman, Ebiki Timitimi, to immediately halt the process pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation into the matter.

The statement explained that preliminary investigation revealed that due diligence and the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities were ignored in the deal.

The government cautioned its boards, agencies and parastatals against acting unilaterally on matters concerning the state to avoid unpleasant consequences.
