    Chevron donates $500,000 to California fire victims

    Chevron has donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross in support of  vitims of the wildfires in Northern and Southern California.

    “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the devastation caused by the wildfires in our home state,” said Mike Wirth, vice chairman, Chevron.

    “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the fires and the first responders working to contain them.”

    “Based in California for over a century, Chevron is committed to working with local communities as they recover from the fires.

    The oil gaint said it would match any donations made to wildfire relief efforts by its employees and retirees.

    Shell Nigeria Gas donates labs, ICT centre to Ogun school

    Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) has donated an ICT centre and well-equipped science laboratories to African Church Community Secondary School in Ewupe, a community hosting the company’s facilities in Ota, Ogun State.

    The gesture was the second phase of SNG’s intervention in the school to bring it to a competitive standard.

    Last year, the company also donated a block of five classrooms, a 12-room stand-alone toilet facility, school water system, upgraded football field, and rehabilitated five blocks of 19 classrooms for shared use by the school and the co-located Ebenezer African Church Primary School in the first phase of the intervention.

    “Our goal is to support government and other relevant agencies to close the gap of educational inequality between pupils of public schools and their counterparts in private schools,” Managing Director of SNG, Ed Ubong, said at a ceremony marking the completion and handover of the projects to Ogun State government.

    “We recognise education as the topmost need of the people of our neighboring communities and what we have done is a progression of our longstanding support to the school and to the communities,” Ubong added.

    Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Mrs. Modupe Mujota, who received the facilities, commended SNG’s gesture. She charged the students to take advantage of the facilities to “upscale their academic performance and competitive exploits”.

    “This singular act of Shell Nigeria Gas depicts the company’s fulfillment of its social responsibility for the development of its host communities and is worthy of emulation by others,” she said.

    The Principal, Mr. Gbolahan Adekunjo, acknowledged the improved academic standard and the growing number of enrolment in the school following the series of upgrade by SNG.

    “The interventions have resulted in an enabling environment for teaching and learning and the impact is felt by the students, staff, parents and catchment communities.”

    Community Development Association, Ewupe, Chairman Alhaji Monsuru Akande thanked SNG. He appealed to the government to create the enabling environment for SNG and other companies to support education in the state.

    SNG is owned by Shell  for the downstream distribution of gas.

    It operates a gas transmission and distribution network of approximately 115km and serves industrial customers in Ota, Ogun State and Aba in Abia State.

    A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mr. Makinde Araoye (aka MKD), has distributed 100 bags of rice, 50 bags of wheat, 25 bags of Semovita, among others, to indigent retirees across the state.

    At the event, which took place at Emure-Ekiti, the headquarters of Emure Local Government Area, Araoye said he started the initiative, code-named Makinde Araoye Social Security Scheme, at his Ilawe-Ekiti country home in 2011 but extended it to the six local government areas in his senatorial district.

    The six local government areas are: Ekiti South West, Ekiti East, Ikere, Ise-Orun, Emure and Gbonyin.

    He said: “The tentacle of the social security scheme, which I flagged off in 2011 with just 15 senior citizens from my Ilawe-Ekiti country home in Ekiti South West Local Government Area as beneficiaries, has now been extended to cover senior citizens from all the towns and villages in Ekiti South Senatorial District.

    “The second edition of the now expanded Makinde Araoye (MKD) Social Security Scheme for indigent old persons, which is being flagged off today, has about 500 beneficiaries who are paid N10,000 each.”

    Dangote committee donates N250m to victims

    The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, headed by Aliko Dangote, has provided N250million as relief assistance to flood victims in Benue State.

    In response to a request by the state government, the committee has approved the release of one Internally Displaced Person (IDP) hostel, completed by the committee in the state, to provide temporary shelter for displaced persons.

    More than 110,000 persons in 24 communities, including Makurdi, have been displaced by flood.

    The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Boniface Ortese, said over 2,769 households were affected.

    He said places affected included Achusa, Idye, Wurukum Market, Genabe, Industrial Layout, Demekpe, Wadata Market, Katungu, behind the Civil Service Commission, Agboughul-Wadata, among others, in Makurdi.

    “In Achusa, 200 houses were affected, with 5,125 persons displaced. In Idye, 217 houses, with 5,200 persons displaced. Behind the Civil Service Commission, 200 houses were submerged and 5,777 persons were displaced.”

    2Baba donates to Benue flood victims

    Hip hop artiste, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has visited the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Makurdi, Benue State.

    2Baba, a Benue State indigene, arrived the camp with his wife, Annie, on Tuesday morning to donate relief materials to the displaced residents.

    He is scheduled to perform under the Benue Flood Relief Initiative.

    Over 100, 000 persons have been displaced by floods which ravaged parts of Benue State two weeks ago and over 3, 400 persons have registered at the camp which opened at the International Market, Makurdi.

    Earlier, Nollywood actress and producer, Rita Dominic, had used her star power to seek assistance for the flood victims.

    Also, Nigerian American singer, Jidenna also shared a poster of how to help victims of the Benue floods.

    “While both Freetown and Houston have been enduring, more than 100,000 people have been displaced by flooding in Benue State, Nigeria,” the ‘Classic Man’ crooner said on his Instagram, posting an image which had the name, place and account details that interested persons can use to show support.

    “Benue is next to the state where I grew up so this really hits home. We need more prayer and more action. Here are a couple ways to donate directly to relief funds via bank account.”

    The account name listed on the poster is Community Links And Human Empowerment Initiative, the bank is First bank and the account number is 2017036058.

    Oyo govt donates N5m as Faleti’s burial rites begin

    The funeral rites of the late actor, broadcaster, cultural icon and elder statesman, Alagba Adebayo Faleti, begin today with a Day of Tributes and Performances.

    Also, the Oyo State government presented a cheque of N5 million to his family for a befitting burial.

    Information, Culture and Tourism Commissioner Toye Arulogun said the day of tributes and performances would hold at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan (UI) at 4 pm.

    The commissioner said the “government’s widow’s mite” was part of measures to celebrate the late Faleti.

    He said the government would provide logistics for the burial of the man, whose “contributions to the exposition and development of Yoruba culture …cannot be underestimated”.

    Arulogun said the commendation service for the late Faleti would hold tomorrow at Salem Baptist Church at Yemetu at noon, while there the lying-in-state at his home holds September 7 at 8 am.

    The commissioner said the lying-in-state will hold at Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) at Ile Akede at 10 am and the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Ibadan at 11 am.

    He said the body of the late cultural icon would leave for Oyo town for service of songs/Christian wake at First Baptist Church, Isokun in Oyo on Thursday.

    According to him, there will be Artist Night to celebrate the late Faleti at Plaza De Haruna in Oyo, about 8 pm.

    Arulogun said the funeral service would hold on September 8 at First Baptist Church, Isokun, and interment at Agboye Village in Oyo via Ogbomosho.

    He enjoined stakeholders in theatre arts, culture, broadcasting and Yoruba literature to attend the events as a befitting honour to a worthy ambassador of Oyo State.

    Responding to the government’s donation, Mr. Ayoola Faleti, who spoke for Faleti’s family, thanked Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the government for their support.

  • NEMA donates relief materials to Benue flood victims

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday donated 27 different items as relief materials to flood victims in Benue and inspect affected areas.

    The Director-General NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, told newsmen in Makurdi that he was in the state on presidential directives.

    He said that the directive was for the agency to quickly intervene into the Benue flood disaster and see how the victims would be assisted.

    Maihaja used the opportunity to extend President Muhammadu Buhari’s heartfelt sympathy to the flood victims in Benue and assured them of the Federal Government determination.

    He said that the relief materials were food stuffs, household items and other building materials, adding that after the official assessment of the areas, the actual areas of assistance would be ascertained.

    “We are here on a mission from Mr President to visit the flood affected areas and ascertain the level of damage caused by the disaster to enable us assist the victims in every way possible.

    “We brought 27 different relief materials to deliver to the state for onward distribution to the affected victims,” he said.

    He said that the materials were pre emergency response materials, adding that three trucks were on ground while five were still on the way.

    The D-G explained that the quantum of destruction could not be ascertained at the moment, adding that his team would be on ground to carry out the data to determine exact quantity.

    Maihaja said that the agency had not received any official communication from the Cameroonian government on the possibility of opening Lagdo Dam that caused the 2012 flood.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items delivered to the state are rice, children clothes, building materials, foodstuffs and other household items.

    The D-G, while in the state visited the IDPs camp at International Market Makurdi and flood affected areas like Radio Benue, Idye village, Welfare Quarters, Guma, Achusa among others.

    Speaking to newsmen, Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr Joseph Utsev admitted that though they were expecting some element of flood this year, not of this magnitude.

    Utsev said that Makurdi Township lacked drainages that would control the run water into River Benue, adding that River Benue needed to be dredged to avoid a repetition of the 2012 disaster.

    He said that property worth billions of naira were so far destroyed among which were households, farmlands and businesses.

    The commissioner further appealed to the Federal Government to assist the state with funds for the construction of drainages and dredging of River Benue.

    He said that no life was lost since the beginning of the disaster this year.

  • LG donates to Lekki motherless babies home

    It was all excitement at the Lagos State motherless babies home, Lekki, as LG played host to over 100 children at a lovely party, as well as donating two units of all new Gencool Inverter ACs and three units of jet cool air conditioners to the home.

    This happened recently, as LG once again demonstrated its love and commitment to the welfare of children in the society as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR].

    Aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the children, as well as supporting their dreams and aspirations, the event which was a part of the organisations lined-up CSR activities for the year was indeed a fun-filled atmosphere as representatives of the organisation interacted freely with the children numbering well over 100.

    Speaking at the occasion, General Manager, Air Solution, LG Electronics West Africa Operations, Mr.  Cholyong Park, said: “LG will continue to be alive to its corporate social responsibility by providing succour for the needy especially children who are leaders of tomorrow.” He stated further that the air conditioners being donated, if put to good use, will help to give the children some level of comfort while in the home.

    Also on ground to support the LG team was the Managing Director, Fouani Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mohammed Fouani, who in a short remark said: “It is for me a thing of joy to always contribute towards the upkeep of children anywhere and I am really happy to be here today.”

    The event provided an opportunity for the children to have fun like never before. The Matron-in-Charge of the home headed by Mrs. Olaore Feyisayo, expressed delight at having LG Electronics team in the home and putting together a party for the kids as well as donating some of their products for use in the home. She thanked the company for their kind gesture and commended the initiative.

    However, LG has continued to maintain its track record of always giving back to the society, particularly its host communities. In the past, the company has equally made some laudable donations to several orphanage homes across the country and even in the educational sector their immense contributions are being felt.

    LG Electronics has over the years demonstrated its love for Nigeria through various first-rated CSR activities. Some of which include scholarship awards to best engineering UNILAG students; visit to Idi-Ayunre community in Ibadan where they donated LG anti-mosquito air conditioners, as well as treated mosquito nets to the health centre, beach-cleaning activity to mark World Environment Day where staff of the organisation came together to clean an expansive beach in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State and many other activities.

    The kids danced joyously to the sound of music supplied by the DJ on ground as others engaged in different games that were provided for the party.

  • Oil firm donates building to UNN Geology department

    Platform Petroleum Limited, an indigenous oil and gas exploration and production company yesterday handed over an ultra-modern building to the Geology Department of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The event had Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu as Special guest. He was joined by other distinguished guests, such as Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, Chairman of Platform Petroleum, Dr. ABC Orjiako, Chairman of SEPLAT, Professor O. Sylvester Adegoke, Dr. Bolaji Ogundare, Managing Director, Newcross and HRM King Dr. Edmund M. Daukoru amongst others.

    The edifice named Austin Avuru Building was built and donated to the department in honour of Mr. Austin Avuru, first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Platform Petroleum Limited and current CEO, SEPLAT Petroleum Development Company Plc who graduated from the department in 1980.

    A statement signed by Mr. Amaechi Moshe C. I., Ag. GMD Platform Petroleum Holdings Limited, said the facility “which is the first CSR initiative by Platform Petroleum Limited outside of its Umutu, Delta State, operation site came out of the desire of the company to support Mr. Avuru’s desire to reduce the huge infrastructural deficit at his alma mater.”

    He noted that things had gotten so bad at the Department of Geology to the extent that it was about to lose its academic accreditation.

    The new building, according to the statement, is larger and more conducive than the old departmental building and will provide office space for lecturers as well as laboratories and lecture halls for students.

    The gesture by the company is a reiteration of Platform Petroleum Limited’s commitment to creating value for the larger good of the society and the company is excited that the provision of this building will enhance quality of education for the staff and students of the Department of Geology.

    Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba thanked the company for the support and congratulated Austin Avuru for being a worthy ambassador of the institution. He assured his guests that the university will justify the resources invested in the new building. He also enjoined other alumni to emulate Avuru and Platform Petroleum in helping to enhance the learning environment.

  • Sokoto donates N20m items to indigent women, children

    The Sokoto State Government has donated N20 million worth of food items and clothing materials to indigent women and children in the state.

    Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Hajiya Kulu Sifawa, said the items included 200 bags each of rice, sugar and millet, as well as 2,000 women wrappers.

    She added that additional N1 million was also disbursed to women receiving treatment at various hospitals across Sokoto metropolis and its environs.

    According to her: “The target groups included mainly vulnerable women and children focused groups, widows, orphans, women patients, women living with HIV/AIDS, diabetic women and other physically-challenged women, among others.

    “The gesture was aimed at alleviating the suffering of the beneficiaries during the ongoing Ramadan fast.
