    Provost hails TETFund as agency donates multimedia lab

    Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Umunze, Anambra State, Prof Josephat Ogbuagu, has described the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) as the most important government agency providing facilities for education. Without interventions from TETFund, Ogbuagu said quality teaching would have eroded in most tertiary institutions.

    The provost spoke during the commissioning of the fully-equipped Multimedia Micro-teaching Laboratory donated to the college by TETFund.

    He praised the Federal Government for creating the agency to provide modern facilities in higher institutions to enhance quality education and service delivery. The agency’s intervention, he said, had improved teaching and learning in higher institutions, adding that it had also raised a generation of students who could compete with their peers globally.

    Ogbuagu said: “The college has benefitted immensely from the TETFund intervention. Most of the facilities we have today are courtesy of TETFund interventions and we have had a lot of achievements through the provision of necessary facilities to aid teaching and learning.”

    Handing over the multimedia facility to the management, the agency’s Director of Physical Planning, Mr Jonathan Achumie, said the Federal Government built the facility to ameliorate teaching, noting that the building had been equipped with best instrument.

    The handover ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Provost, Mrs J.C, Madichie, the college Teaching Practice Co-ordinator, Mr A.C. Assimonye, Director of Works and Services, Mr D.C, Mojekwu, and Director Physical Planning and Statistics, Mr B.U. Agwunobi, among others.

    The President of Loveworld Ministry, Pastor  Chris Oyakhilome, has donated a whopping sum of N1 billion to the Benson Idahosa University, as part of his support to the institution, which he described as one of the legacies of his mentor and role-model, the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa.

    Oyakhilome made the donation, even as the university yesterday conferred on him a honourary Doctor of Divinity, during which he made the donation to facilitate the Faculty of Engineering project in the campus in Benin city, Edo State.

    Oyakhilome said his contribution to the varsity is borne of out his passion to contribute meaningfully to the development of lives, noting that the founder of the institution, late Archbishop Idahosa, positively influenced his life and ministry as a youth.

    According to him, the television ministry of the late Archbishop Idahosa, popularly known as Idahosa World Outreach (IWO- Television), was the first of its kind in the country, noting that it helped to liberate lost souls and assisted Christians in the world to accept Christ.

    “The Archbishop Benson Idahosa was one of the most remarkable and inspiring personality of the 20th Century. It is a fact of life that those who did not have the privilege to get to meet him are blessed to meet him through many of us. The impact of the Archbishop on me as an individual is unquantifiable.

    “Many times, people would ask me why I talk about the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa more than anybody. It will surprise you to know that as a young man, I was working with the Archbishop in the mail room in the Church of God Mission in Benin City. I was blessed to have worked with the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa. While working with him, I had the blessing and benefit of seeing the Archbishop passed by my table everyday to his office,” he said.

    The Chancellor of the institution, Archbishop Margaret Idahosa, described Oyakhilome as a spiritual son of the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa, noting that the decision to honour Iyakhilome was in recognition of his contribution to building and saving lives through his ministry.

    Council chief donates bags, books to pupils

    Isolo Local Council Development Area Executive Secretary Olusegun Jubril has distributed school bags and exercise books to 14 primary school pupils.

    He made the donation during the closing seminar of the free summer coaching at the council.

    Jubril said parents, teachers and the government must come together to tackle the country’s security challenges in the country.

    He said: “The summer coaching was organised because we value both qualitative and quantitative education as a means of eradicating the menace of social miscreants. I am hopeful that the knowledge, skills and ideas acquired will go a long way in preparing you better for your future endeavours.“

    The Council Manager, Mr Kehinde Yusuf, said the initiative was designed to inspire the pupils, since it involved academic training, co-vocational and co-curricular activities.

    “We realised that during the long holidays, children are exposed to criminal activities. So, Isolo LCDA, in collaboration with the Community Initiative for Child Education (CICE) orgainised the programme to assist them in building a great future,” he said.

    Iyaloja Ire-Akari Market, Mrs Eunice Dosumu hailed the council chief for the gesture.

    A teacher, Omowunmi Awojobi, said some of the pupils, could not complete a sentence in English before the holiday started.

    “These same pupils can now speak and write well in English. I am glad because it makes our work easier,” she said.

    Speaking with The Nation, a pupil, Tosin Mantanmi, said she was glad for the opportunity.

    Oyedepo donates to Boko Haram victims

    •’We share in your grief’

    The founder of Living Faith Ministries, Bishop David Oyedepo has encouraged widows and children of persecuted Christians in northern parts of the country to take solace in Jesus Christ and his reassuring words of hope in the face of oppression.

    He spoke during the donation of food and domestic items to the Stephen Children Home Abeokuta, Ogun State at the weekend.

    Over 50 widows and 400 children orphaned by Boko Haram fighters in Kaduna, Plateau, Gombe, Kano and other parts of the north are taking refuge in the home.

    Donating the items under the David Oyedepo Foundation, the faith preacher said the nation’s Christian community was very impressed by the relentless commitment of the widows and children to the gospel of Jesus in the face of intense persecution.

    He assured them that the church remains committed to reminding persecuted saints that they are never alone in their time of grief.

    Oyedepo, who was represented by a team from the foundation led by Gift Okwuazu, expressed optimism that the insurgency in the north will end soonest.

    According to him: “I am so happy for your resolve, commitment and we will continue to stand by you so that you will remain committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ even in the face of persecution, untold hardship and destruction of properties experience in northern Nigeria.”

    The Director of Stephen Children Home, Rev Isaac Newton-Wusu, thanked Oyedepo for his continuous support.

    He said: “We thank the church for believing in us as we work hard in taking care of the children of the persecuted saints and we will continue to expand and build fellowship.”

    Newton-Wusu challenged the nation’s leaders to be sincere, upright and firm in their determination to put a stop to the insurgency in the north

    He stated: “The decision is before our leaders to choose to confront evil and knock it out and nip it in the bud  or leave it to let it expand and when it expand it degenerates into a phenomenon that they never dream of because many of them will be sacked and probably they might seek exile somewhere else.”

  • Islamic organisation donates items to orphans, less privileged

    The Jama’atu Izalatul Bidah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), an Islamic organisation, on Friday donated items worth N1.2 million to orphans and the less privileged in the FCT.

    Malam Muhammad Sanni, the Secretary to the organisation’s FCT Committee on orphans and less privileged, said it was a usual practice, especially during Ramadan.

    “ We gathered the orphans today to see how we can assist them, being the month of Ramadan; the month of help.

    “So, we fixed today to see what we can do for them, especially now that Ramadan is coming to an end.’’

    Sanni noted that Sallah was very much around the corner and that orphans and the less privileged would need something to celebrate and even after Sallah.

    “So, we in JIBWIS, always try to make them happy and comfortable, as if their parents were still alive.

    “ Even though we cannot do exactly what their parents were doing for them while they were alive, at least we try to reduce their pains and plight.”

    The scribe expressed confidence that by the time they go back to their various homes, they would feel happy and elated by the gesture.

    He said that although there were over 5,000 of such people in the FCT, the organisation could only cater for 180 orphans at the moment.

  • Church donates to General Hospital

    The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Lagos Province 10, Orile Agege has donated items to Orile Agege General Hospital, Lagos.

    The church donated 15 mattress, 20 Chairs and 20 lockers to the Children Department of the hospital as part of its corporate social responsibility.

    Assistant Pastor-in-charge of the Province, Pastor Ayodele John said the donation was a way to give back to the society and to let them know that the Church is concerned about their needs.

    A Consultant in the hospital, Dr Aduke Odutayo who received the items, thanked the church for the gesture.

    Dr Odutayo said the action is apt because the church has met the needs of the department. She prayed God to enrich the church and make them to expand.

    The Principal Medical Officer of the Hospital, Dr Arikenbi Temidire said she was excited because the province promised them and fulfilled it. She said she will make sure the children enjoy all the equipments presented by the church and it would enable them to enjoy their stay in the hospital.

  • Mission Africa donates to Abia community

    A Non-Governmental Organisation, Mission Africa, has donated free medical and educational materials to Ovim community in Isuikwuato council, Abia State.

    Speaking at the event, Executive Director of Mission Africa Mrs Ndudi Chuku said the organisation would focus on improving health, education and poverty reduction.

    Chuku said they embarked on the free medical outreach to help people take care of themselves. She said 20 pupils were under its scholarship scheme.

    She said: “We are doing free medical outreach to the people of this village, while we have 20 pupils on our scholarship programme.

    “Our programme has been on since 2013 and every year, Mission Africa has 50 students on its scholarship programme. When a pupil qualifies, we take care of them from JS1 to SS3; 20 of our pupils are from Ovim”.

    Chuku explained that about 30 volunteers, including professionals, were registered for the outreach.

    On the scholarship selection criteria, the executive director said they work with the development union of every community they go to.

    “The pupil might be an orphan, one that is very poor; you know here you go to school when your family can afford it, and when it is time to pay fees, if you don’t have money, you are kicked out of school.

    “Some of the pupils have stayed out of school for a whole year, some two years, some for two terms out of three in a whole year.

    “The villagers advocate for the pupils, they are the ones that say this one has stayed out of school for one year, help him/her because we don’t live here, we are not even from here.

    “We look for the poor. We don’t give scholarships to kids in the city or in private schools, we only give to kids in the villages, who are the poorest of the poor, to ensure they finish high school,” Chukwu said.

    A female recipient, 48-year old Comfort Duruoha from Eluobai said her blood pressure was checked and she got free drugs free.

    Council chief donates relief materials to herdsmen

    Following the fire incident that gutted residents of Fulani herdsmen at Jijingba, a community in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the chairman Hon. Shaban Tete has donated some relief materials worth millions of naira to the affected victims.

    Presenting the relief materials to the Fulani herdsmen, the council chief said the gesture aimed at cushioning the suffering the victims were going through, saying it is the responsibility of his administration to provide a healthy atmosphere conducive to the well-being of members of the community.

    He further said his administration is an all-inclusive one, as such, will continue to ensure that it carries along every member of the community in the interest of development of the area.

    Hon. Tete reiterated the determination of the council to continue to give priority attention to the welfare of the people, in order to improve the living standard of the people, pointing out that the items donated were to help in alleviating the conditions and improve the lives of the Fulani herdsmen whose houses were gutted by fire.

    Recall that the Village Head, Chief Yahaya Musa, who was trying to tidy his farmland, had set fire on his farm when the fire spread and burnt down all the Fulani huts rendering them homeless.

    Musa, who said the act was not deliberate, expressed gratitude to the council chief for coming to their aid during their trying period, advising the Fulani community to continue to live in peace with other communities as one family.

    Speaking on behalf of the Fulani, the Chief of Fulani in Kuje, Umar Ishiaka thanked the council chief for extending the gesture to his people. He pledged his readiness to support the council in its development strides.

    Some of the items donated to the affected Fulani herdsmen included bags of rice, clothes, bags of salt, bags of maize, cartons of maggi and mattresses.

    Dangote Foundation donates N20m for scholarship

    THE Dangote Foundation has donated N20 million for scholarship at James Hope College Agbor, Delta State.

    The scholarship will  cover selected indigent students’ school fees through their secondary school years.

    Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Zouera Youssoufou, who presented the donation at the school premises in Agbor, said the foundation was focussing on education because “it is central to the development of the society”.

    She explained that the body would continue to do all within its resources to help in uplifting education and healthcare standard – two areas she said the foundation had invested in.

    “Education is key for future development of our youths and the society. Most countries of the world referred to as developed achieved the height because they placed premium on education,” she noted.

    According to her, the Dangote Foundation would continue to partner with groups and appropriate institutions to identify potentials among the disadvantage students in secondary schools and help them develop their potentials through offer of scholarships.

    The foundation chairman, Aliko Dangote, visited the school last year, promising that the charity organisation would spread its intervention to the school through offer of scholarships.

    Receiving the cheque on behalf of the school, its principal, Mr. Abraham Swart, thanked the foundation for the gesture, saying it demonstrated the love Dangote have for the less-privileged in the society.

  • Corps member donates signposts

    A female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving at UNILORIN, Miss Abosede Sewedo Panu, has donated six electronic signposts to the University as part of her Community Development (CD) service. The signposts, which cost about N65,000 each, have been erected at strategic places on campus including the Student Affairs Unit and some hostels.

    Inaugurating the signposts penultimate Saturday, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Yisa Fakunle, praised Miss Panu for her zealousness and community service.

    “I want to congratulate Miss Panu and the NYSC for the good corpers they usually send to us.  We at the University of Ilorin appreciate the thoughtfulness, the drive and dedication of Miss Panu Sewedo to this project that we are commissioning today,” he said.

    In his remarks, the Kwara State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. M. A. Amusa, who led 18 other senior officials of the state NYSC secretariat to the event, described Miss Panu as a good ambassador of the NYSC and sought greater collaborations between universities and the NYSC.

    “The NYSC and universities need to work closer together because it is the universities’ products that we mentor and employ. Likewise, universities absorb our products as staff and postgraduate students.”

    Miss Panu, who served at the Student Affairs Unit, said she was motivated to do the project after observing that some areas like the Halls of Residence and Student Affairs Unit, did not have signposts.

    “I said to myself, the Student Affairs Unit and Halls of Residents can also have these beautiful boards”, she said.

    Miss Panu also said she learnt a lot about printing and welding in the course of implementing the project.
