    Akeredolu donates cash to families of slain soldiers

    Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has condoled with the Army on the recent killing of three soldiers by some militants in Ajakpa community.

    The governor, who spoke yesterday during a condolence visit to the Commanding Officer of the 19 Battalion at Okitipupa, described the death of the soldiers as regrettable.

    Akeredolu, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Security, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, said his administration would continue to provide logistics support for the military and other security agencies to protect the residents and their property.

    The Commanding Officer for 19 Battalion, Lt.-Col. Maaji, who was represented by Captain Michael Ogundele, thanked the governor for sharing in the grief of the Army.

    He assured the governor of the military’s commitment to the discharge of their duties.

    The state government gave N250,000 to the soldier with bullet wounds and N500,000 each to the families of the three slain soldiers.

    Peace has since returned to the area.

    But the government and security agencies are working together to ensure that such an incident does not recur.

    Shoprite Nigeria donates to AUN’s Feed and Read Programme

    Shoprite has donated goods worth N2 million to the American University of Nigeria’s (AUN’s) Feed and Read Programme.

    The items, which included food, beverages, and toiletries, would help vulnerable children in the Northeast.

    The low literacy and numeracy rates are compounded by the number of children who are displaced, separated from families or orphaned; large numbers of displaced teachers; and schools that have been destroyed or closed due to violence in the area, said Shoprite management

    The programme teaches beneficiaries how to read and provides them with a meal every day.  It is aimed at preparing them to move into mainstream schooling and/or finding employment.

    The donation reflects Shoprite Nigeria’s support for the Feed and Read programme and the incredible hard work and persistence of its team.

    Obiano’s wife donates delivery kits

    The wife of Anambra State governor, Mrs. Ebelech-ukwu Obiano has continued her tour of communities in the state with delivery of free kits for expectant mothers.

    The packs were handed out to 10 expectant mothers at Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area, one of the five communities she visited.

    Other communities where the kits were distributed were Ebenator, Ukpor, Osumenyi, and Akwaihedi.

    Speaking while handing out the kits to the women, Mrs. Obiano stated that no woman should be exposed ýto unsafe delivery due to lack of basic sterilised equipment in the rural communities.

    She said, “My NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), decided to use the opportunity of this tour to reach out to pregnant women to ensure that they observe necessary antenatal visits and have the Mama kits ready and handy on their Expected Delivery Date.”

    “We are grateful to our donors GEANCO Foundation, a US based organization which made it possible for us to get this modern kit to assist us in promoting safe delivery as a means of reducing high maternal mortality rate in our state and country”

    She told the women that her husband, Governor Willie Obiano treats the welfare of women as priority and does not want to hear that any woman could not deliver safely in any part of the state.

    “I am supporting the effort of our governor in promoting the health and safe delivery of pregnant mothers by giving them these delivery kits and each pack contains all the tools for safe delivery”

    “I want you to keep the kit inside your packed bag unopened to avoid contamination until it is handed over to the Nurse whenever you enter labour.”

    One of the expectant mothers at Ezinifite, Mrs. Chizoba Obiakor thanked the wife of the governor for the gift and for giving women in Anambra a sense of belonging in many ways.

    Each Mama Kit pack contains sterile scalpel, OB pad, pair of non- latex gloves and 4×4’’ gauze, Sterile Bulb Syringe, Sterile Umbilical Clamps, Plastic Underpad, Receiving Blanket, Non-Woven Towels, BZK Towelette, Plastic Placenta Bag, Plastic Apron, Twist Ties, Trash Bag, and Apgar Scoring Chart.

    Okorocha donates 200-bed hospital to Air Force

    •NAF establishes 211 Regiment Group

    The Governor of Imo state Owelle Rochas Okorocha has donated a 200 bed hospital with modern equipment to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The hospital formerly called Owerri North Specialist Hospital was one of the infrastructure development projects of the state government before it was handed over to the NAF.

    The governor spoke in Owerri when the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshall Sadique Abubakar paid him a visit at government house during the ground breaking ceremony for the establishment of the NAF 211 Regiment Group along airport road Owerri.

    Governor Okorocha who thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the approval of the establishment of the Regiment Group  said the state has been neglected by the federal government for many years adding that the establishment of the Air Force base will provide ample security for the newly established International Cargo Airport in the state.

    Okorocha: “ I want to thank the President for the coming of the Air Force Base in this state, it shows that the President has remembered Imo state which has been abandoned by previous federal administrations. I also want to thank the Chief of the Air Staff for the speed the project has taken off and assure that every support needed will be provided by the state government to make this dream come through.

    “ The coming of the NAF Regiment Group will complement what other sister security organisations have been doing in the state and it will also complement the International Cargo Airport which is due to be operational in May 2017.

    “ We are also donating a 200-bed hospital formerly Owerri North Specialist Hospital,  complete with modern equipment and gadgets to the Nigerian Air Force to manage, but  I will urge the Chief of the Air Staff to consider the  employing local indigenes to work in the hospital.”

    The CAS said the coming of the 211 Regiment Group  was established to add value  and enhance the security of  Imo state. He said the Regiment is a highly skilled quick and response group which is trained in all manner of modern warfare and rescue operations.

    “We are here to add value to Imo state, the Unit we are bringing is a highly skilled quick response group, highly trained and able to move in to rescue any situation. For those who are involved in kidnapping, this is the time to change your ways or we will be very decisive with any case of kidnapping,” he said.

    The Air Chief also said the NAF is ready to move in very fast and build the Air Force base saying provision for the establishment of the base has been made in the 2017 budget and the NAF will begin construction as soon as the budget is passed.

    He said the NAF will also establish a secondary school which will also be available for the indigenes of the area adding that free medical outreaches will be part of their benefits to the communities around the base.

    The Governor and his guest later visited the Hospital in Owerri north local government before laying the foundation of the 211 Regiment Group in   Ngor- Okpala community. After visiting the hospital, the CAS described it as “amazing.”

    Abubakar: “ It is amazing what we have here, I don’t have the words to express our appreciation to the government of Imo state, our Chief of Medical Services will be here tomorrow to take stock and I have instructed they change the name of the hospital to NAF Hospital immediately.”

     

  • Abia govt donates N50m gadgets to police

    The Abia State Government has donated security equipment estimated at over N50 million to the state police command.

    The equipment comprised 200 handheld Walkie Talkie with batteries and chargers, two units of DMR with 1,000 Watts repeaters, 10 pieces of 45 Watts DMR for patrol vehicles and two pieces of 60 Watts DMR base stations.

    The Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Emeka Ubani, a Superintendent of Police (SP), spoke at the weekend in Umuahia when he presented the equipment to the commanmd on behalf of the governor.

    Ubani hoped the gadgets would boost the reception and dissemination of information and logistics among policemen, especially in Aba, the state’s commercial hub and its environs.

    The governor’s aide hoped the police would judiciously use the equipment to boost the security of life and property.

    He restated the commitment of the Ikpeazu administration to a secure and crime-free Abia State.

    Ubani said the government would not relent in supporting security agencies to provide tight security for the residents until they could sleep with their eyes closed.

    The Aba Area Commander of the police, Peter Wagbara, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), thanked the government for supporting the command.

    Wagbara said: “Aba serves a very important role in the economy of the state, the Southeast, country and even at the world. The gadgets will help us to cover Aba and its environs very well.

    “The repeaters will be strategically located across various divisions under Aba Command among the divisional police officers (DPOs), Safer Highway officers and men, Patrol and Guard (P&G), Rapid Response Squad (Dragon), highway patrol teams, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Counter-Terrorism Unit and among others.

    “It will help us to respond swiftly to distress calls from the public and coordinate our activities effectively.”

    Firm donates N5m to orphanages

    The Lagos Channel Management (LCM), a dredging firm in Apapa, has donated N5 million to some orphanages in the state as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

    Its Managing Director, Mr Danny Fuchs, said the money was given to five different ‘homes’ in the spirit of the season.

    The beneficaries are the Lagos State Government Children Centre, the Lagos State Special Correctional Centre for Girls, Bola Mofo Zion Shelter, Tunji Adebayo Motherless Babies Home and Bab-es-Salam Home.

    Each of the homes got a million naira cheque each.

    The Managing Director urged well placed citizens, corporate and individuals to the needies.

    He urged the management of each home to take proper care of the people in their homes.

    Fuchs said the government alone could not shoulder the entire responsibility of the society, urging well meaning Nigerians to join hand in bringing happiness to homes of the vulnerable children.

    He said: “It is not the very amount we spend on this project that matters; it is the attitude that matters; and the possible encouragement that we might engender, towards encouraging others to also pay worthy attention to the most vulnerable class.

    “I understand all their challenges. It is the same all over the world. The children have no unions to fight their cause and that is why we must come together to always reach out to them.

    “It is possible that our effort may not be enough. But it is in good direction.”

    A social welfare officer at Lagos State Ministry of Social Development and head of the Lagos State Children Centre, Silifat Giwa thanked the management of LCM on behalf of the state government for their good gesture.

    She said: “We are catering for the under privilege children rescued from the street, as well as children who were emotionally or sexually abused.

    “Our job is to restore the each child to what he should be. As of today, we have 52 children.”

    Sadiat Sabiu of the Special Correctional Centre for Girls, Idi-Araba, said the Correctional home with 71 girls, caters for children from age 10-17years.

    “We try to re-unite children with their parents where they can be found. And where they cannot be found, we manage them.

    “Almost all our children go to school, but some of them can’t speak English language. Those who passed through our schools will go to government schools. But those who come in form JSS 2, would normally go to private schools. Some of the children with us are form Togo and Benin Republic.

    “There is strict supervision. We have our buses which take these children to school and bring them back,” Sabiu said.

    The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Lagos Province 37 yesterday donated chairs and tables to Meiran Community Primary School in Ayobo Ipaja Local Council Development Area in Lagos.

    Pastor in charge of the Zone Samson Adeoye said the materials are for the teachers’ benefits.

    The gesture, he said, was in line with RCCG General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s directive.

    Pastor in charge of the Area Tunde Olugbuyi congratulated the school for being the beneficiary.

    Pastor Olugbuyi said more developmental projects will be spread to other schools in the area.

    Pastor in charge of the Province Adewole Ajayeoba said the project was meant to address the immediate need of the school.

    The gesture, he said, will enhance the working atmosphere of the staff.

    “We know government alone cannot cater for the needs of the society, hence this social responsibility. We have renovated toilets and laboratories in other schools so ensure our kids study in a conducive atmosphere,” he said.

    The Education Secretary of Alimosho Local Government Education Authority, Mrs Airat Alamu implored the teachers to make good use of the materials.

    Gone are those days, Mrs Alamu said, teachers’ reward are in heaven.

    “In our own era, teachers’ reward must starts from this world. We should enjoy our labour like other professionals in this world and hereafter,” she said.

    Mrs Alamu appealed to the teachers to be diligent on duty especially in relating with the pupils.

    “Let’s do our job well in order to receive God’s blessings. As we impact on the children, we are building our society,” she said.

    Unilever donates relief materials to IDPs

    Unilever Nigeria has donated relief materials to thousands in camps in the Northeast through various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

    Donating the items, the External Affairs and Sustainability Manager, Mr. Tomiwa Asaolu, noted the commitment of the company toward assisting displaced persons in the North East. “Unilever is supporting Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in communities and IDP camps across Nigeria to provide urgently needed health and hygiene materials to those who are in dire need of it,” he said.

    “It is our goal to advance the lives of Nigerians by delivering brands that help improve the health and hygiene. We believe these materials we are donating will do just that here at the camps.”

    Asaolu also commended the efforts of NEMA officials, the NGOs and other humanitarian agencies who are working tirelessly to provide support for the displaced persons.

    ‘’We appreciate NEMA and all the NGOs we are currently working with, whose support and collaboration has made this project a success.”

    Some notable partner NGOs include; Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), National Centre for Women, Youths and Community Action (NACWYCA), amongst others.

    The Executive Director, NACWYCA, Mr. NawaniAboki, said: “We have received from Unilever Nigeria, items which include 7,028 cases of Camay soap, 8,433 cases of Camay Roll On, 8,433 cases of Camay Lotion, 2640 cases of Camay Spray and 1,176 cases of Camay Barsoap, which have been delivered to the leaders of the benefitting communities.

    “I assure you the items will be distributed to the IDPs as there will be a strict monitoring of the distribution by the NGO to ensure that the items reach the target beneficiaries,” he added.

    Officials of Annmom Foundation for Mothers’ Welfare (AFMW) have donated food items to residents of Agege in Lagos.

    Director of Media Publicity & Strategy Sunday Onyewonsa said the gesture became necessary because of the need to be one’s “brother’s keeper”.

    “The Yuletide is a period when men of goodwill show love to fellow men, especially the less privilege.

    “One of the cardinal objectives of the group is to care for poor mothers and children across the globe.

    “We chose Agege because of the poor. Earlier before Christmas, we were at Idi-Araba in Mushin to share food items, clothing, shoes and umbrellas to residents.

    “We intend taking our campaign to West Africa during the year. We are also working to help IDPs in the Northeast to complement the Federal Government’s efforts,” he said.
