…says it only engages in a routine visit

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied unlawfully invading the offices of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja and Lagos.

The Service in an official email from its Public Relations Office dsspr@dss.gov.ng described the claims as “inaccurate and misleading.”

According to the DSS, a team of two unarmed operatives was sent to the SERAP office in Abuja as part of a routine investigation.

The Service said the visit was misinterpreted as an unlawful invasion, harassment, and intimidation of SERAP officials.

The DSS emphasised that such official enquiries and liaisons are standard practice and do not constitute illegality or a raid.

The agency assured that it would conduct an in-depth investigation into the malicious claims and urged citizens to participate in national security management.

The DSS reiterated its commitment to professionalism in carrying out its core mandate and urged the public to disregard the false narratives surrounding the incident.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) has been inundated with multiple enquiries on its alleged unlawful invasion of SERAP offices in Abuja and Lagos,” the statement indicated.

    SERAP accuses DSS of intimidation

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) yesterday accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of intimidation after operatives visited its Abuja office yesterday.

According to the organisation, “A tall, large, dark-skinned woman entered our office, accompanied by a slim, dark-skinned man.

“Other officers were sighted in two unmarked vehicles stationed outside our office.

“The officers who interrogated our office requested to see our directors.”

SERAP believes the visit followed its call for the reversal of the increase in the pump price of petrol.

Deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare said in a statement: “The Tinubu administration must immediately direct the DSS to end the intimidation and harassment of SERAP and our staff members.”

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) added: “The Tinubu government must urgently fish out the officers who carried out the invasion of SERAP’s office in the name of the government.

“Anyone found to be responsible for the invasion must be prosecuted.

“The government must allow human rights defenders to freely carry out their work, consistent with the Nigerian Constitution.”

SERAP added: “The escalating crackdown on human rights, and harassment and intimidation of NGOs and human rights defenders that have shown astonishing courage in their human rights work hurt those most in need, undermine access of Nigerian victims of human rights violations and abuses to justice, and contribute to a culture of impunity of perpetrators.

“This government has an obligation to support and protect civil society groups and human rights defenders.

“We are seriously concerned about the growing restrictions on civic space and the brutal crackdown on the human rights of Nigerians.

“President Tinubu must urgently instruct appropriate authorities to promptly and thoroughly investigate the invasion of our offices and to bring to justice those involved.

“Nigerian authorities must allow SERAP to freely carry out our mandates as recognized under the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights to which Nigeria is a state party.

“Nigerian authorities must end the harassment and intimidation attacks against SERAP and ensure the safety and security of our staff.

“If the Tinubu government does not take all necessary measures to immediately end the intimidation and harassment of SERAP or any other civil society group for that matter, SERAP will take appropriate legal action nationally and internationally to challenge the brutal crackdown…”

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested seven Polish nationals for allegedly raising the Russian flag during protests in Kano State.

Spokesman of the secret police, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said they were being interrogated.

Also yesterday, the Federal Government warned against foreign interference in the cost of living protests in some parts of the country.

It said “appropriate action” would be meted out to any “foreign entity residing in Nigeria” that directly or indirectly played a role in the demonstrations.

The government said it had launched an investigation into the violence that trailed the protests which began a week ago.

The Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of six Spaniards for their alleged involvement in the protests.

Many demonstrators arrested in Kano and Kaduna states for brandishing the Russian flag during the protests are also currently being held by security agencies.

Afunanya said: “For the persons we have picked up from Kano because of where they were found during the protest and display of the foreign flag, that was two days ago.

“As a responsible security organisation, we owe it an obligation to do some verification and ascertain basic reasons and circumstances for some cases.

“They were picked as a result of security enforcement because of where they were when the incident happened.

“It is not a targeted operation on behalf of the DSS and Nigeria.

“But we have a plea, in the cause of the discharge of our duty we will also see that some Nigerians definitely would want to use foreign lands as a launch pad to attack domestic peace and stability.

“We plead that you do not offer your country to some person who may be deviant or have a terrorist inclination.

“Nigeria is a country with a large population and I believe that the support other countries will give will help us.”

He assured that the arrests were not a targeted attempt on Polish nationals.

Afunanya warned that the government would not spare anyone found guilty of funding the protests.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government.

The DSS had earlier vowed to name sponsors of foreign-flag-flying protesters to promote insurrection in the country.

    Foreign nations should steer clear

Also speaking during a diplomatic corp briefing, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar stressed the value the government placed on the “cordial relationships it has with many foreign nations,” but said Nigeria would not fold its hands and watch foreign entities meddle in its internal affairs.

He said: “The government would take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.

“Nigeria cherishes and continues to value the cordial relationships that happily subsist between her and your individual countries and organisations and will not do anything to undermine or take for granted such relationships.

‘’Indeed, more than any time before now, we solicit your understanding and collaboration in the ongoing efforts of the Federal government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country, to achieve a better life for every Nigerian at home and abroad.”

The minister told the diplomatic corps that   President Tinubu ‘’understands the pains and frustration driving the protests’’ and is doing everything to address them.

12 held for vandalism in Abuja

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said 12 suspected vandals were arrested in Abuja during the protests.

Three of the suspects were caught while trying to vandalise some infrastructure at the Moshood Abiola Stadium after scaling the fence of the facility while four were nabbed in Jabi for attempting to vandalise street light.

A scavenger,  known as Baban-bola, was picked up on top of the newly inaugurated Wuye Bridge for attempting to vandalise the facility.

82 more suspects arrested in Jigawa

The state  Police Command said the 82 additional suspects arrested for looting and vandalising public property upped the total number of those being detained to 294.

The command also listed   303 bags of fertiliser, 50 motorcycles, three tricycles, 12 bicycles, nine chairs, 54 cartons of mosquito nets, two bags of rice, and office furniture as things stolen by some of the suspects.

SAN, ex-NBA boss, APC chieftain flay use of foreign flag

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ahamba;  former Chairman of the Imo State branch of  Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) Jude Ogamba and Director-General of the Confederation of All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups,  Kailani Muhammad, have described the use of foreign flag by some demonstrators as deplorable.

They said the act was not only treasonable but against our citizenship.

Ahamba said: ‘’They started a protest with good intentions, only to end up flying another nation’s flag. Can the Russian government provide you with food? Flying that flag is against your citizenship.”

Ogamba, who advised the Federal Government to address the  suffering  in the country,  said  the use of the flag  amounted to a “desecration of the country’s independence.”

Muhammad challenged the government to ensure the protest did not escalate.

“Historically, we have witnessed events such as the Tiv Massacre, the Wild-Wild West of the 1960s, and the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1971. Although Nigeria has survived these challenges, the nation continues to bear the scars,’’ he said.

President General of Ogbako Ndigbo Nile, Akpelu Azunna, also condemned the act but urged the government to reduce the suffering in the land.

JUST IN: We’ve uncovered plans to hijack planned nationwide protest – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has cautioned the organisers of the planned nationwide demonstrations to shelve their plans.

The security service revealed that it discovered a plot by certain criminal forces to take over the demonstration and instigate instability across the nation.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 25, by Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesperson, the organisation classified the protest’s motivation as political.

Afunanya also said that the protest organisers planned to use violence to smear the federal and sub-national governments.

He said: “The DSS has followed the discourse on planned protests in parts of the country in the coming weeks by persons and groups yet to identify themselves in public as leaders of the plot.

“While peaceful protest is a democratic right of citizens, the Service has confirmed a sinister plan by some elements to infiltrate the protest and use it to cause chaos and extreme violence in the land. It has also identified the reason behind the protest as political.

“The plotters desire to use the intended violent outcome to smear the federal and sub-national governments, make them unpopular, and pit them against the masses. The long-term objective is to achieve regime change, especially at the Centre.

“The Service has also identified, among others, the funding lines, sponsors, and collaborators of the plot. However, it does not think that aggression should be the first line of action in handling the emerging scenario.

“It has instead, variously applied non-kinetic and conflict resolution strategies, including moral suasion, stakeholder engagement, and other multi-track diplomatic shuttles, to dissuade the planners from actualising their undesirable objective.”

Afunanya also cautioned the demonstrators against engaging in anarchy of any kind for the sake of maintaining peace.

He said: “Based on the foregoing, the Service wishes to warn all the protest groups to eschew any form of proposed rage, anarchy, and spoliation. While the different levels of Government have routinely explained their agenda to ameliorate alleged harsh economic conditions, the Service urges the prospective protesters to listen to the voice of reason and good conscience and patiently engage with the authorities in the interest of peace.

“This has become important given that violence begets the destruction of lives and property as well as serves as a distraction to governance. The agitators are encouraged to use ample ways available to them to channel their grievances without resorting to violence.”

“The Service calls on people of goodwill, leaders of thought, captains of industry, labour unions, student associations, youth leaders, civil society, clergy, NGOs, women’s groups, civil servants, and politicians to shun any invitation to participate in any orchestrated violence, deliberately designed to cause disaffection in the country.

“Similarly, parents, guardians, and heads of traditional and academic institutions are urged to advise their children, wards, subjects, and students not to take part in the planned protest. Let us all join hands to build a nation without rancour, bitterness, or stained banners.

“The Service will work with other sister security and law enforcement agencies to maintain peace. It will, where necessary, apply all legitimate methods to achieve this.”

The Nation reported that the military and police have also warned against the protest slated for August 1 to 10.

DSS recovers 2,000 bags of FG’s rice allegedly diverted in Katsina

The operatives of the Department of the State Services (DSS) in Katsina State Command, have recovered 2,000 bags of rice out of the 20 trucks donated to the state by the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recovered rice was allegedly diverted by some government officials.

NAN also reports that the gesture by the Federal Government was to cushion the effects of the current economic hardships in the country.

The DSS officials in the state, who confirmed the negative development, however, declined further comments on the issue and preferred to be anonymous.

An investigation conducted revealed that the 25kg bags of rice were deposited in a store at the Central market, Katsina.

It was some people who alerted the DSS on Wednesday night, who immediately swung into action.

The Chairman, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the state, Mr Abdulrahman Abdullahi, expressed shock over the issue.

Abdullahi lamented how the Federal Government donated the palliatives to the vulnerable but were allegedly diverted by some unpatriotic people.

The chairman vowed that they would continue to follow the case up to its logical conclusion.

He, therefore, advised the government to investigate the matter with a view of punishing those behind the diversion.

Also commenting on the matter, a resident of Katsina, Suleiman Kofar-Durbi, said that was an unfortunate development.

“It is unfortunate that I received the information yesterday night that the President provided relief to the vulnerables and some people diverted it.

“People are experiencing hardship due to the current economic situation in the country, the government should investigate the matter thoroughly and bring culprits to book,” he said.

The Chairman, Market Traders Association, Alhaji Shehu Usman, said that the rice was brought into the market by someone who was not a trader.

“Someone asked his brother to keep the rice for him in his stores in the market.

“We are calling on our members to be careful in receiving such items from people outside for keeping in the market,” he said.

Responding to the matter, the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to Gov. Dikko Radda, Mr Aliyu Abdullahi, said the rice was allocated to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, by the Federal Government.

‘He said, ‘The minister directed the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure Development, Alhaji Nasiru Lawal to keep it and he decided to take the rice to the market for safe keeping.

‘The rice allocated to the minister  were 1, 200 bags.”

Operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) have reportedly killed one of the kidnappers of the mother of the famous Hausa singer, Dauda Rarara.

After a sustained gun duel with the heavily armed kidnappers, one was shot dead while another was apprehended.

The names of the kidnappers were given as Hamisu and Bature. The former was killed while Bature, who was arrested, is being treated of the gunshot wounds he sustained.

Our source at the agency said in Kano that the operatives at the weekend stormed the Makarfi deep forest in Kaduna State and engaged the bandits in their enclave when they were busy sharing the ransom cash paid for the release of Rarara’s mother.

“The operatives were able to overpower the kidnappers, killing one instantly and arresting another who is receiving treatment from the gunshots he received from DSS operatives.

“The sum of N26.5 million earlier paid to them as ransom was recovered,” the source who pleaded anonymity disclosed.

He said the operation was carried out after a careful intelligence networking.

“They had traced the kidnappers to Makarfi deep forest, raiding the place while they were sharing the ransom cash paid to them,” he said.

Our source added: “The operation was successful and the other kidnapper who is receiving treatment is helping the operatives with credible and useful information on how they had been kidnapping innocent Nigerians.

“I can confidently tell you that Bature, the one receiving treatment, is helping the operatives with information on their activities.”
