DSS kills kidnapper of mother of Hausa singer Rarara

Operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) have reportedly killed one of the kidnappers of the mother of famous Hausa singer, Dauda Rarara.

After a sustained gun duel with the heavily armed kidnappers, one was shot dead while the other was apprehended.

The names of the kidnappers were given as Hamisu and Bature.

The former was killed while Bature is being treated of the gunshot wounds he sustained.

Sources said the operatives at the weekend stormed the Makarfi deep forest in Kaduna State and engaged the bandits in their enclave when they were busy sharing the ransom cash paid for the release of Rarara’s mother.

“The operatives were able to overpower the kidnappers, killing one instantly and arresting another who is receiving treatment from the gun shots he received from DSS operatives.

“The sum of N26.5 million earlier paid to them as ransom was recovered,” the source who pleaded anonymity disclosed.

“They had traced the kidnappers to Makarfi deep forest, raiding the place while they sharing the ransom cash paid to them.

“The operation was successful and the other kidnapper who is receiving treatment is helping the operatives with credible and useful information on how they had been kidnapping innocent Nigerians.

“I can confidently tell you that Bature, the one receiving treatment, is helping the operatives with information on their activities,” the source added.

Director, Public Relations and Strategic Communications, DSS National Headquarters, Abuja, Dr Peter Afunanya, made this known in a statement.

He said while citizens may have the rights of assembly and expression, such should not be used to undermine public safety and national security.

He said attempts by some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that may turn violent will not be tolerated.

  • DSS and rule of lawlessness

    DSS and rule of lawlessness

A society dies by instalment when the rule of law gets desecrated or spurned. That is why there must be vigilance against violations, and any violation called out whenever it occurs. There was reported violation of the rule recently in Ogun State when suspected operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested some persons being tried before a court, against an instruction by the trial judge.

Two defendants who were arraigned before an Ogun high court sitting in Ilaro, Yewa South council area, were seized by persons believed to be DSS operatives penultimate Monday for their suspected instigation of unrest in Agosasa community, Ipokia council area. The defendants, named Fatai Isiaka and Samuel Oyero, were standing trial for alleged arson following Obaship tussle in Agosasa community that resulted in violence in which property estimated at millions of naira were destroyed and one person killed. Following the crisis, a notable community member reportedly accused the defendants of instigating the violence in which weapons were reportedly used on innocent locals, in their bid to install a candidate different from the person approved by the Ogun State Government as community monarch.

The defendants were standing trial in a case titled “The State vs. Awode Oladosu & 13 others” over which Justice A. A. Shobayo presided. No sooner had the day’s proceedings ended than the two defendants were reportedly manhandled within the court premises and whisked away by the suspected DSS operatives, according to the defence counsel. Confirming the arrest, Principal Registrar of the High Court and Sectional Head of High Court in Ilaro, Omololu Olusanya, decried it as disrespectful to the rule of law because the judge had ordered the operatives not to make any arrest within the court premises, but that was what they did with the two persons. According to him, the operatives did not wear any outfit that identified them as from the secret police but they were so identified because they had approached the judge before the court session began that they had arrests to make, upon which the judge instructed them that it must not be done within the court premises. “But they refused that advice and carried out the arrests within the premises,” Olusanya said.

The DSS has not disclaimed the operatives, while the two men are said to currently be in its Ogun State command’s custody in Abeokuta. But media outlets cited anonymous sources saying the men had spurned prior invitations by the security service and had proven elusive, which was why they were tackled down at the court. But you could ask if it wasn’t contemptuous of court – not only to arrest suspects for offences they were already standing trial, but doing that within court premises against a judge’s express directive. Rule of force must never override the rule of law.

DSS denies invading Kano Emir’s Palace

The Department of State Service (DSS) on Thursday, denied media reports alleging that it invaded the Emir of Kano’s Palace, saying it is untrue.

The state Director, DSS, Mr Muhammad Alhassan said this when he spoke with newsmen in Kano.

Alhassan said that the DSS only deployed its personnel to the palace as part of security arrangement for the visit of the First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, to the Emir.

He said however, that the personnel were withdrawn, following the postponement of the visit due to the absence of the Emir in town.

He said that there was no iota of truth in the report alleging that DSS operatives stormed the Emir’s Palace in connection with the recent development at the State House of Assembly.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the false and malicious report, which he said was aimed at causing unnecessary tension and misinformation.

The State House of Assembly had on Thursday repealed the Kano Emirates Council Law, 2019, thereby dissolving the Emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye and Rano.

  • FCT witnessing improved security under Tinubu – DSS

FCT witnessing improved security under Tinubu – DSS

The Department of Security Services, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), says the territory has recorded improved security within one year of President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

The Director of the department, Adamu Gwary, a Fellow of Defence College, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Gwary told NAN while assessing the performance of Tinubu-led administration on security in the FCT, that the impact was impressive, considering the reduced incidents of security breaches.

According to him, the security situation has significantly improved since Mr Nyesom Wike assumed office as the FCT Minister in August 2023.

“We receive not only a situational report from security agencies, but from members of the public.

“In the past, it used to be a daily affair where you will hear there are these issues, there are those issues, here and there, within the city, the environs, and the suburbs of the FCT.

“But today, sometimes a whole week will pass without any report.

“We have an interface with traditional rulers, who give us intelligence reports, which we process and forward to responsible security agencies, but this has really died down.

“Also, if you recall, the issue of theft of manhood was at its peak at the commencement of the Tinubu-led Administration, but that has been completely addressed.

“This is not to say that we are there, but the improvement is very visible in terms of the reduced number of reported cases of criminal activities.”

He attributed the successes to the proactiveness of the FCT minister through intensive community engagement and provision of logistics and equipment support to security agencies.

He recalled that Wike had organised town hall meetings across the six Area Council of the FCT, where he and security agencies interacted with community members on their active participation in addressing insecurity.

“The minister had equally provided vehicles to traditional rulers across the FCT to enable them to move around their domain and mobilise their subjects to support ongoing security efforts.

“This is with a view to take security to the doorsteps of the residents and assure them of the FCT Administration’s readiness to support security agencies to do their work.

“These have really paid off,” he said.

Gwary added that the minister equally set up security task forces to address heinous crime, like kidnapping the dreaded one chance criminal activities.

On logistics support to security agencies, the director said that the FCT minister, under Tinubu-led administration had procured and distributed motorcycles to security agencies, including vigilance groups to improve security in rural communities.

He added that the FCT Administration had equally procured patrol vehicles, fitted with modern communication gadgets including combat protective gears.

“Plans have also been concluded to procure surveillance drones and other equipment to enhance surveillance and operation of security agencies in the city.

“These are all geared towards ensuring zero tolerance to heinous crime within the city centre and the suburb, which is plagued with the issue of kidnapping and the rest,” he said.

The director described security as everybody’s business and called on the resident to cooperate with security agencies in sharing timely and accurate information.

“See something, say something and we will do something,” he said.

Mr Edward Orim, Principal Consultant Edgard Consulting, a private security firm, equally said that Wike, under the Tinubu’s government had made significant headway in addressing insecurity in the FCT.

Orim, who is also the Chairman of ASIS International, Chapter 273, Abuja, an international security organisation, particularly lauded the current government for curbing the trend of kidnapping in the territory.

“From my own assessment, I think the current administration has done very well,” he said.

He, however, advised the FCT Administration to do more in strengthening community policing, where everybody would be involved in assisting the police with critical information, including logistics where necessary.

“Community policing is very critical to addressing insecurity; know your neighbour and give information out to the police to help them do their job.

“There should be more awareness on the residents to be aware of their surroundings, security threats and work with security agencies to address them,” he said.

  • DSS operatives allegedly brutalise two National Assembly employees

DSS operatives allegedly brutalise two National Assembly employees

Two senior staff members of the National Assembly were yesterday reportedly brutalised by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Trouble was said to have begun at about 11:45am when the two employees were asked to identify themselves as they made their way from the New Senate Building to the White House section of the complex.

According to an eyewitness account, the two officials, namely John Nnadi of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) and Chris Odoh, a deputy director, had flashed their identity cards to the DSS operatives but were accused of not identifying themselves properly.

Being senior staff of NASS, attempts made by them to proceed to the White House from the door linking the walk way linking the two edifices were said to have been resisted by the DSS operatives.

The action of the DSS was said to have led to a scuffle and outright physical assault of the staff by the operatives.

It was learnt that efforts by passers-by to resolve the crisis angered the DSS operatives who after being joined by four other operatives, descended heavily on the two official, dragging Nnadi and pushing the Deputy Director (Chris Odoh) to their office at the White House.

The forceful movement and dragging of John Nnadi and Chris Odoh to the DSS office by its operatives from a distance of about 125 metres and the rising pandemonium drew the attention of the staff of the Unity Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA) as well as other employees of the Senate Public Accounts Committee and journalists from the Senate Press Centre whose offices were along that route.

Not happy about the embarrassment of the two staff, other members of staff of the National Assembly from various offices at the White House, including a Sargent-At-Arms who often bears the mace during procession of presiding officers of the Senate spontaneously gathered at the front of the DSS’ office with a call on the operatives to allow the two victims go.
