  • Police investigates alleged drinking of poison by mother in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has commenced investigation into the circumstances that led to an alleged drinking of rat poison by a mother of three in Enugu City.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Sunday in Enugu that the incident occurred on April 28.

    Amaraizu said that the incident took place at number 10 Umuezeoha Ojotta Street in Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area.

    According to him, the incident threw the entire Awkunanaw area into confusion.

    “It was gathered that the victim identified as Nkechi Nwakwe and a mother of three children, had allegedly on that fateful day taken a rat killer medicine with a view to taking her life.

    “It was further gathered from sources that the woman is having some unresolved issues with her husband identified as Ugochukwu Nwakwe, and on that note decided to take rat killer in order to take her own life,’’ he said.

    The spokesman said the woman was promptly rushed to Good Shepherd Hospital, Uwani, in Enugu and was now responding to treatment.

  • Police nab suspected armed robber in Enugu, recover stolen tricycle

    The Enugu State Police Command said that it had arrested a suspected armed robber, who specialized in snatching tricycle, popularly known as “Keke Napep’’ within Enugu metropolis.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, via a statement issued on Thursday in Enugu, said the suspect was arrested on April 8, and a stolen tricycle recovered him.

     He said that the operatives from the Central Police Station, Enugu, acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off from members of the public.

    “It was gathered that the suspect alongside his cohorts now at large, had allegedly at gun point robbed their victim of his tricycle with registration number UWN 418 QK at Mbanugo Coal Camp axis of Enugu and escaped.

    “Through a distress call received, police operatives swung into action and gave the hoodlums hot chase which paid off as one of the hoodlums was promptly nabbed while others escaped.

    “Recovered from the suspect is the said tricycle,’’ he said.

    The spokesman said that the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation, while manhunt on the fleeing members of his gang members is continuing.

  • Police confirm seven persons dead in multiple auto crash in Enugu

    The Police in Enugu has commenced investigation into a multiple motor accident that claimed seven lives in Ugwuoba Community, Oji-River Local Government Area, along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident, occurred on Sunday, April 8 at about 8 p.m.

    “It was gathered that an articulated vehicle with registration number; KTU 31 XA collided with one Mitsubishi bus with registration number XE 911 JJT.

    “The bus in turn hit another Mitsubishi bus with registration number FGG 233 XG, and as a result, both vehicles crash landed on the truck.

    “No fewer than seven passengers were confirmed dead including an eight-month-old baby who later died at a nearby hospital during medical attention,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu noted that the identities of the deceased persons were yet to be ascertained.

    According to him, other victims who sustained various degrees of injuries were rushed to Salvation and Faith Hospitals in Oji River for treatment.

    “The deceased bodies have been deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary in Oji River,’’ he added.

  • Police nab suspected armed robber, cultist in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested a suspected notorious armed robber and cultist who had been terrorising members of Ibagwa Nike community of Enugu East Local Government Area.

    The suspect, Sopuruchukwu Anike, 24, also claimed to be from  Ibagwa Nike community.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that a single barrel gun which the suspect and his cohorts used in unleashing mayhem on their victims was recovered during the operation

    He said the suspect was arrested by operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command on April 9.

    Amaraizu said that the suspect and his cohorts usually robbed their victims at gunpoint and dispossessed them of their telephones, money and other valuables.

    He said that the suspect also confessed to being a member of the Aye confraternity.

    The police spokesman said that the suspect said he bought the gun from one of his cohorts, Ikenna, who is currently in prison custody.

    He said that the suspect joined the cult in 2016 and thereafter, dropped out from school in Senior Secondary one.

    Amaraizu said that a full scale investigation had commenced into the incident.

  • Father hacks son to death in Enugu

    The Police in Enugu State have launched a manhunt for one Onyenwe Offor Ajah, who  allegedly hacked his son to death in an Enugu community.

    The police spokesman in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident occurred on March 28 at Ameke Enu village in Oduma Community of Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

    Amaraizu said the son whom he allegedly killed after a disagreement, had been identified as Kenneth Ajah, 38.

    He said the suspect had a misunderstanding over some yet-to-be established issues with his son, which started at Orie Oduma Market.

    “It was further gathered that following the alleged misunderstanding, there arose a fight between the father and his son, which resulted to the use of an object to hit the victim on his head by the father.

    “The son, however, became unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital and was later confirmed dead by a doctor on duty,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu said that the deceased’s body had been deposited at Awgu District General Hospital Mortuary; while a manhunt for the fleeing suspect had been intensified.

  • Police investigates attempted gang-rape in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has begun investigation on the alleged attempted gang-raping by some suspected youths in the state during a musical concert.

    The command’s spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ebere Amaraizu, announced this in Enugu on Monday in a statement.

    He said that police operatives of the Independence Layout Division of the command arrested the suspects at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, on March 31.

    “It was gathered that one person who is already helping police operatives in their investigations have been arrested for his alleged role in the attempt to gang-rape a victim at Michael Okpara Square axis during a musical concert.

    “Also arrested were three others in relation to alleged offences of snatching and stealing of cell phones during the event.

    “Those arrested will be made to face the music in line with various provisions and specifications of the law after a full investigation,” he said.

  • Police declare couple wanted over alleged N63m fraud

    The Police Command in Enugu State has declared a couple wanted for alleged N63 million forgery and fraud in a mortgage institution.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement in Enugu on Thursday that the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department had commenced a full scale investigation into the matter.

    Amaraizu said that the wife, Mrs Chinyere Amalunweze, 36, a native of Umuegbu Ego village in Nnobi community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra, is fair in complexion and a former staff of a mortgage institution.

    He noted that her husband, Mr Tony Amalunweze, 38, from Umulumgbe community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu, who resides at No. 2a Akpugo St. Independence Layout, Enugu, is dark in complexion.

    “They were alleged to have been involved in alleged case of conspiracy, forgery and fraud in which they defrauded a mortgage institution up to the tune of N63 million and escaped.

    “The command is requesting members of the public with relevant information about how they can be traced, to report promptly to any nearest police station in the state for necessary action.

    “The command had already issued a warrant of arrest against the suspects,’’ he said.

  • Father hacks son to death over cashew nut in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigations into the case of a man who allegedly hacked his son to death over cashew nut in the state.

    The Command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Thursday that the incident occurred on March 21.

    Amaraizu said the incident happened at Obinetiti Isikwe village, Achi community, Oji River local government area of the state.

    He said: “Hyacinth Ilo, 60, allegedly had an argument with his son, Izuchukwu Ilo.

    “In the ensuing argument between the duo over ownership of cashew nut, the father allegedly hit his son with a stick on the back of the head and the boy immediately slumped and died.

    “On noticing that he has died, the father went further to bury him in a shallow grave inside his compound.”

    Amaraizu said full-scale investigation of the incident had commenced.

    “The suspect, who has been arrested by the police, is helping in the investigation,’’Amaraizu said.

    Man hacks wife to death in Enugu – Police

    The Police in Enugu State have commenced a full scale investigation into an alleged incident in which a husband hacked his wife to death in Enugu city.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Friday in Enugu that the incident occurred on March 8.

    Amaraizu, who did not disclose the location of the incident, said that the deceased, Mrs Nkechi Nnamani, was a mother of four children.

    “It was gathered that the wife identified as Nkechi Nnamani, has been hale and hearty before the husband, Sunday Nnamani, allegedly hit her with an object on the head which left her in coma.

    “Nkechi was consequently rushed to Parklane Specialist Hospital, Enugu, where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,’’ he said.

    The PPRO said that police operatives had been trying to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged unfortunate incident; just as the dead body of Nkechi had been deposited at a nearby mortuary.

    Police probe fire outbreak in Enugu market

    The Police Command in Enugu State has begun investigation into the fire outbreak in the Enugu Timber market which destroyed goods worth millions of Naira.

    The command’s Spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said in Enugu that the command had already deployed a team of investigators to the scene of the incident.

    Amaraizu said the command had also deployed some police patrol teams from the Uwani Division to constantly patrol the market and its adjoining streets to ensure that hoodlums did not cause further loss.

    “The command has deployed patrol teams and a detachment of mobile policemen to the market to ensure that hoodlums and criminals do not wreak havoc on any stall in the market.

    “We are still continuing with our deployment of police personnel on ground and on patrol especially our patrol teams from Uwani Division and other nearby divisions,’’ he said.

    The police spokesman assured traders not affected by the incident of the safety of their goods in the market.
