    Enugu CP warns officers against extortion

    The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, has warned officers and men of the Command against extortion, intimidation and all other forms of unprofessional conduct.

    Danmallam gave the warning during his weekly engagement of the officers on Tuesday in Enugu.

    According to Danmallam, any officer found wanting would be severely dealt with in line with the laid down rules governing the Nigeria Police Force.

    He also advised members of the public to resist the temptation of being extorted by reporting promptly any unprofessional conduct by officers to his office.

    “You can also report to the office of the Police Public Relations Officer or office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) nearest to
    you.

    “Even as the command’s X-squad and the Provost have been charged to fish out those in this negative tendencies as there will be no immunity for impunity,’’ he said.

    The commissioner also advised members of the public to be law abiding, security conscious and partner with the police to ensure a crime-free and a secure environment.

    He also reminded members of the public on the need to constantly make use of the command’s distress call lines as follows: 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 and 08098880172.

    Amaraizu said that “First Impression Matters’’ was meant to dispel negative tendencies among police officers and men for improved reputation, trust and public confidence.

    “The sensitisation programme is fashioned with a view to bringing an effective partnership between the police and members of the public,’’ he said.

    Police prevent mob action after trailer kills motorcyclist in Enugu

    Policemen in Enugu State have quelled a potential mob action and breach of the peace in Ugwuoba community in Oji River local government area of the state following the killing of motorcyclist in an accident involving a trailer carrying a cattle.

    The spokesman of the state police command, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Saturday that the incident occurred on Friday in the Ugwuoba community located on the Oji-River-Enugu highway.

    Amaraizu said a motorcyclist, who was later identified as Jonathan Madu, died in the accident.

    “It was gathered that the trailer conveying cows skidded off its lane and crushed to death the motorcyclist who was on the other lane.

    “Following the incident, the driver of the said trailer was said to have taken to his heels.

    “But the early arrival of police operatives of the Oji-River Division helped in dousing the tension at the accident scene as both the motorcycle and parts of the trailer were already burning,’’ he said.

    Police investigate electrocution of artisan in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State says it has commenced investigation into alleged electrocution of an artisan, Uzoma Okpara, at the Unity Estate, Independence layout, Enugu metropolis.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Wednesday in Enugu that the  incident occurred on Nov. 21 at about 11 a.m.

    Amaraizu said the deceased, who was a plumber, died when he had contact with a high tension wire close to a building where he was working on a faulty overhead tank at the estate.

    He said that the victim was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention and was confirmed dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

    He said that the body of the plumber had been deposited at the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu mortuary for autopsy.

    Police distribute 2,500 leaflets on security tips, distress call numbers in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command, on Saturday, distributed over 2,500 leaflets with security tips, distress call numbers and social media addresses in Enugu.

    The command’s four distress call numbers are: 08032003702, 08075390883, 08086671202 and 08098880172.

    Its social media platforms include: nigeriapoliceenugustatecommand for Face-book; @PoliceNG_enugu for Twitter handle and enugustatepolice@gmail.com, enugustatepolice@gmail.com for Email.

    Speaking to our correspondent after the command’s monthly jogging and walking in Enugu, the Command’s Sports Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said that the leaflets would enable residents to have an easy contact with the police.

    He also said that this would allow residents to join law enforcement agents to participate actively in crime prevention.

    Amaraizu said that the distribution of the leaflets was another measure that the command had designed to enhance pro-activeness by opening up avenues to get information and feedback from the people.

    He, however, lauded other security personnel and staff of corporate bodies for the co-operation and synergy in carrying out the exercise.

    Amaraizu, who is also the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), thanked a telecommunication company – MTN Nigeria – for sponsoring most activities in the three-hour exercise.

    ‘‘This month’s Jog-and-Walk exercise with the theme: “Jog/walk for Agility and Life,’’ has enable police to reach their numerous publics and residents of the state through security tip leaflets.

    ‘‘It has built comradeship between police and other sister security agencies as well as corporate organisations, which chief among them is MTN Nigeria that had sponsored activities carried out in the exercise,’’ he said.

    Earlier, a Senior Security Manager with MTN Nigeria, Mr Chuks Ogbuehi, said ‘‘yes, we are seeing the benefits of partnering with the police and residents to create a peaceful environment for business and other human activities to strive in the state’’.

    One of the participants, Mr Osita Egbo, said that the exercise had made him more agile and allowed him to burn some calories.

    NAN reports that the participants, who walked and jogged over 12 kilometres, passed through Ridge Way, Okpara Avenue, Prisons Way, Camp Road, Zik Avenue and terminated at Agbani Road, all within Enugu.

    The Command’s monthly Walk/Jog show commenced in January, 2013.

    Police trail ‘one-chance’ tricycle, taxi cab operators in Enugu

    The  Police Command in Enugu State says it is trailing hoodlums masquerading themselves as commercial tricycles and taxi cabs operators to commit heinous crimes in the state.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement in Enugu on Wednesday.

    According to Amaraizu, plain cloth detectives have been detailed to trail, arrest the tricycle and taxi cab operators, popularly called “one-chance” in the state.

    Amaraizu said that some of the operators had resorted to using the antics of being tricycle and taxi passengers to dispossess people, especially women, of their valuables.

    He advised members of the public to be wary of the antics of the hoodlums who also masqueraded as tricycle operators, otherwise known as Keke NAPEP.

    “The command is also advising members of the public to be security conscious.

    Police nab undergraduate for impersonation, bank fraud

    The Enugu State Police Command said it arrested a suspect involved in impersonation of bank customers and beneficiaries of transfers from abroad.

    The Police Command’s Spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Sunday, that the 23 year-old suspect was an undergraduate from Amaigbo in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo.

    According to him, the suspect went to a new generation bank located at Okpara Avenue in Enugu metropolis to cash the sum of 800 U.S. dollars purported to have been sent to him from someone abroad.

    “When he was asked by the bank staff to provide proof of identification, he presented an identity card bearing the name of One Eleng Okpara Peter likely to be the authorised beneficiary.

    “He smartly superimposed his passport photograph on that of the likely beneficiary and presented himself to be Eleng Okpara Peter.

    “When he could no longer establish his innocence, it was obvious that he was trying to withdraw money sent to another person by impersonating the beneficiary,’’ he said.

    According to him, the suspect earlier claimed that the money was sent to him as a gift by a female Facebook friend.

    Investigation further showed that the account number he presented as his belonged to someone else.

    The command advised members of the public to be security conscious and not disclose their bank details and vital personal information to the public.

    Police rescue two suspected robbers from mob in Enugu

    The operatives of the Police Command in Enugu State say they have rescued two suspected robbers from mob and lynching in Amuri road near Enugu.

    The Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO ) for the command, Asp. Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Thursday in Enugu.

    He said that the suspects, who attempted to flee after they made effort to steal a motorcycle, were rescued on Oct. 22.

    The police image maker noted that the rescue was carried out by police operatives from Agbani Division of the command.

    The spokesman said that the two suspects, name with held, hailed from Ogbaku in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo.

    “The two suspects received beating of their lives from the mob that promptly descended heavily on them for allegedly stealing a Top Star Motorcycle from where it was parked at Amuri Road at Agbani,’’ he said.

    He said the owner of the said motorcycle had gone to purchase some items from Eke Agbani Market.

    “It was gathered that suspects, having been sighted by good citizens, were promptly given a hot chase by members of the public who eventually closed them up.’’

    “They gave them the beating of their lives which left them with various degrees of injuries before the arrival of police operatives who immediately rescued them from being lynched.’’

    Amaraizu, who said the suspects were receiving medical attention while the motorcycle has been recovered, said the command had begun full scale investigations into the matter.

    Police arrest man for allegedly killing commercial sex worker

    The police in Enugu State have arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a commercial sex worker to death on Sunday, following a disagreement he had with the woman.

    The Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO ) SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement he issued on Monday, said that the incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. at Onuato Street, Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that the victim accompanied the suspect to his apartment where they had a disagreement which resulted in a scuffle that led to her death.

    He said that the suspect, who picked up the sex worker at Rangers Avenue on Oct. 22, had agreed with her that he would pay her N4,000 after passing the night with him.

    The PPRO quoted the suspect as disclosing that he had drunk to his fill and that on arrival, because it was already getting late, he demanded that they had sex immediately.

    “His request did not influence anything as the deceased allegedly requested to finish what she was inhaling in order to be in the mood for the business of the day.

    “The accused maintained that after several hours of pressuring her and without any answer, he slept off and woke up before 3 a.m.,” Amarizu stated.

    The police spokesman said that the accused immediately ordered the sex wrker to leave the apartment since the aim of bringing her appeared to have been defeated.

    “The accused said that the deceased resisted the order and allegedly warned him to beware as she would not succumb to any person’s threat whatsoever.

    “She later headed for a kitchen knife that was seen in the kitchen spot of the suspect’s room after allegedly biting him.

    “The accused further revealed that a fight suddenly broke out between them and as the deceased tried to stab him to death with the kitchen knife, he overpowered her,” he said.

    Amarizu quoted the suspect as saying that the kitchen knife went straight to the stomach of the deceased and he finally stabbed her on the neck region and she died.

    The police spokesman said that the accused later wrapped her body and hurriedly arranged to travel to Lagos.

    According to him, the suspect was nabbed, following a tip off from members of a local vigilante.

    He said that the body was recovered from the apartment and deposited at the mortuary of the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu, as investigations into the incident had commenced.

    The Police Command in Enugu State said about 850 of its personnel, personnel of sister security agencies as well as staff of corporate bodies would on Oct.21 engage in monthly  fitness exercise.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Enugu.

    Amariazu, a Superintendent of Police, said the October monthly edition of the sporting exercise was tagged “Jog/Walk for Life and Agility’’.

    He, therefore, urged members of the public not panic as the exercise would command large turnout of able-bodied men and women.

    He said those involved in the exercise would pass through major roads and routes within Enugu metropolis.

    “The Command will on Saturday, Oct. 21, hold its October monthly edition of the sporting exercise tagged: “Jog/Walk for Life and Agility’’.

    “The exercise is packaged to foster unity between the command and its publics and to promote physical and mental well being of participants.

    “During the period of the exercise, participants which include officers and men from among the police, sister security agencies and other relevant stakeholders, would jog and walk together.

    “Participants would take-off from the command headquarters passing through designated streets and roads in Enugu metropolis.

    “The exercise will terminate at the Superior Police Officers Mess field for further cooling down and warming down exercises,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu, who doubles as Sports Officer of the command, urged motorists and other members of the public to be guided by the information.

    Police nab 10 suspects over various crimes in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State said it had arrested 10 suspected criminals who had been terrorising the people of Udenu Local Government Area of the state.

    The Command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement issued in Enugu on Wednesday.

    Amaraizu said that police operatives arrested the suspects when they raided some suspected black spots in the area on Monday.

    He noted that the arrest followed intelligence information given by some members of the public.

    “The command through the combined efforts of its operatives of Udenu Police Division, Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and Anti Kidnapping, raided some suspected black spots in the council area and its environs.

    “During the raids, six suspects, who were suspected to have link with armed robbery and other related criminal activities were nabbed,’’ he said.

    According to him, they are currently helping police operatives in their investigations in relation to their nefarious activities.

    The spokesman also disclosed that the police operatives arrested additional four suspects who had in their possession, suspected Customs Service uniforms.

    “They are currently being investigated by operatives in connection with their nefarious activities with the Customs uniforms and other crimes,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu assured members of the public of the command’s readiness, in conjunction with sister security agencies in the state and relevant stakeholders, of their continued security and safety in the state.
