    Alleged fraudulent bishop ends up in Enugu prison

    The Police Command in Enugu says a cleric, Bishop Ginika Obi, recently arrested over his alleged advance fee fraud involving over N500 million, has been remanded in Enugu Maximum Prison.

    The spokesman of the command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday.

    The bishop whose church/office is at Km 111, Enugu-Port Harcourt highway, Enugu, had been alleged to have tricked many people to pay huge amounts of money to him.

    He was said to have claimed that he would help his victims reap bumper financial dividends in return.

    Amarizu said Obi was arraigned on Oct. 11 in an Enugu Federal High Court presided over by Justice A. Liman.

    He said the suspect had been in prison custody since Oct. 12 and that further hearing on his case had been scheduled for Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.

    “His offences ranging from conspiracy and advance fee fraud were committed in conjunction with others now at large.

    “On Oct. 11, he took his plea after his 82 count charges of conspiracy and advance fee fraud was read to him.

    “He was later remanded in police custody based on the plea of his defence counsel to be brought to court on Oct. 12 for further hearing.

    “He was later remanded in prison custody as he could not meet his bail conditions,’’ the command’s spokesperson said.

    Amarizu said that the suspect’s arrest and arraignment followed several petitions against him and others now at large for allegedly swindling unsuspecting members of the public.

    He said that the bishop and his alleged cohorts disappeared without traces until the command, through intelligence, closed up on him in a hotel in Enugu.

    Man killed for ‘stealing’ yam in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged killing of a man who was accused of stealing a tuber of yam in Amorji Nike community, Enugu East local government area of the state.

    The command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Saturday that the incident happened on October 4.

    “It was gathered that a man whose identity is yet to be established was allegedly beaten to death on October 4 at Amorji Nike, Enugu, for stealing a yam tuber.

    “His corpse was dumped in a compound from where it was recovered,’’ Amaraizu said.

    According to him, investigations have commenced, while two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

    “The arrested suspects are currently helping police operatives in their investigations,’’ the police spokesman added.

    Police arrest four armed robbers in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State says it has arrested four suspected armed robbers who have been terrorising residents of Oji River axis in the state.

    Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command in the state said this in a statement he issued on Friday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that the suspects were arrested on Sept. 28, adding that items recovered from them included a locally made short gun, English made pump action long gun and ammunition.

    “Other items recovered from the bandits include a DVD player and two generating sets, three televisions and home theatre with sound system with a television stand,’’ he said.

    The PPRO also said that the suspects were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oji River Zone, acting on a tip-off.

    “Through intelligence information, operatives of SARS, Oji River Zone, promptly nabbed four suspected armed robbery gang which has been a thorn in the flesh of members of the public in Ndeaboh Aninri and Oji River axis of the state.

    “They are notorious armed robbers/cult and burglary kingpins that have caused nightmare to residents of Oji River axis of the state and its general area,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu said that the suspects were helping police operatives in their investigations in relation to their nefarious activities.

    “The command has maintained that its operatives, in partnership with sister security agencies and relevant stakeholders in the state will not rest on their oars.

    “Suspected hoodlums are being fished out from their hideouts with huge recoveries as exhibits.’’

    Police to investigate drowning of house keeper in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command on Sunday launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning of one Justus Oruka in a well in Enugu.

    A statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, issued in Enugu, said that the incident occurred at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21

    Amaraizu said that the Homicide and Criminal Investigation Departments were doing everything they could to unravel the cause of the incident.

    He noted that the victim, who lived at Uli Street, Ogui in Enugu, got drowned in a well inside an uncompleted building located at Pocket Layout in Nkpokiti  in the state capital.

    “People were seen gathered in their large numbers in Nkpokiti axis of Enugu to see things for themselves, while expressing shock and sorrow as they received the ugly information about a man that allegedly got drowned in a well filled with water.

    “It was gathered that the deceased,  identified as Justus Oruka, had allegedly got drowned in a well filled with water inside an uncompleted building at Pocket Layout, Nkpokiti where the deceased is said to be working as a house keeper.

    “It was further gathered that when  he was eventually recovered from the well and rushed to Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,’’ he said.

    Police organise conference on crime prevention

    The Nigeria Police in Enugu say the Force School of Public Relations will involve professionals in delivering lectures during the police Inter Agency Public Relations Conference on Oct. 5 in Enugu.

    Enugu State Public Relations Officer Ebere Amaraizu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in that involving professionals would curb the rate of crimes.

    He said the provost of the school, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu and other chartered public relations professionals would participate in the conference entitled: “Inter-Agency Relationship: A Panacea for Effective Crime Prevention and Control’’.

    He also said the Nigeria Police in Enugu would host the conference aimed at consolidating cordial working relationship among security agencies in the state.

    “They will through lectures and practical sessions to x-ray how public relations could be used as veritable tool for sustenance of cooperation among sister security agencies,’’ he said.

    Police arrest herbalist for ‘murder’

    Enugu State Police Command has arrested two men, Onyekachi Idoko and Felix Akor, for the alleged murder of three persons in Udenu Local Government, spokesman Ebere Amaraizu said yesterday.

    He said the suspects were nabbed, after a well-coordinated operation by the police.

    Amaraizu said Idoko, of Ifuroka-Amalla community in Udenu Council, was arrested by operatives of Udenu Division.

    The spokesman said the suspect, who fled after committing the alleged offence, was nabbed on September 16 at Inyi community in Igboeze North Local Government.

    He alleged that the suspect, with others, murdered Onyemaechi Eze on July 5 over a yet-to-be established issue or issues and escaped.

    “The suspect is helping operatives in their investigations, as he has given insight into how he and his gang allegedly collected N200,000 from a native doctor, Akor, who hired them to kill the victim.

    “The native doctor is alleged to be responsible for the mysterious death of two siblings, Blessing and John.

    “Akor has been arrested by the operatives,” Amaraizu said.

    He said both suspects were helping the police in their investigations.

    The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested two men, Onyekachi Idoko and Felix Akor, for alleged murder of three persons in Udenu Local Government Area of the state.

    The Spokesperson of the command, ASP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that the two suspects were arrested following a well-coordinated operation by the police.

    Enugu explosion caused by battery spark – Police

    The Enugu State Police Command said on Wednesday the Monday explosion in a market on the outskirts of Enugu was caused by a battery spark.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement in Enugu.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Sept. 11, at about 8 p.m., an alleged explosion rocked the scrap section of a former New Artisan Market on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road on the outskirts of Enugu.

    The command immediately dispatched its Explosive Ordinance Department ( EOD ) to the scene to ensure that the area was safe and secure for all.

    Amaraizu said that a heavy-duty battery negative and positive in the scrap had contact with metal scrap leading to the explosion.

    “The preliminary investigations have revealed that there was a fire contact with the battery at the scrap site of the former market,’’ he said.

    The spokesman, however, said that the investigations were still ongoing to unravel the incident to forestall future occurrence.

    NAN reports that although no life was lost in the incident, the spark caused minor destruction in a nearby food shop and two vehicles parked near the shop.

    Police investigate alleged explosion in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has commenced investigation into an alleged explosion that rocked a former New Artisan Market on the outskirts of Enugu.

    The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that the explosion took place at the former New Artisan Market along Enugu-Port Harcourt Road on Monday at about 8 p.m.

    He said that the police command had dispatched its crack team of investigators, mainly from its Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD), to the scene of the incident.

    The spokesman said that the EOD team was currently combing the entire area and its environs in order to ensure that it was safe and secure for all.

    Amaraizu, however, said that no life was lost in the incident.

    “The command through its operatives has commenced full scale investigation into the alleged incident of explosion at the scrap site of the former New Artisan Market in Enugu.

    “The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained and no life was lost.

    “However, the incident is alleged to have caused minor destruction in a nearby food shop, including two vehicles parked near the said shop,’’ he said.

    He advised residents of the state and travelers along the road not to panic as “the command is on ground and on top of the situation to unravel the causes of the incident’’.

    “The command is advising the good people of the state, particularly residents of that axis not to entertain fear or panic, but to go about their normal lawful businesses.

    “All hands are on deck, the command is working in partnership with relevant sister security agencies and stakeholders to ensure a safe and secure Enugu and its environs,’’he said.

    Enugu: Police investigates food poisoning

    The Police Command in Enugu State says it has commenced investigation into the alleged poisoning of the food of a prominent man in a restaurant in Enugu, the state capital.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), for the command in the state, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement he signed in Enugu on Sunday.

    Amaraizu, who is a Superintendent, said that the incident happened about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 8. at the highly populated Akwuke axis of Enugu metropolis.

    “It was gathered that a man was allegedly served rice and stew at a popular restaurant in Akwuke, ‘’he said.

    Amaraizu said that it took the timely intervention of police operatives to quell the activities of the mob that besieged the restaurant, immediately after the incident.

    “This, however, would have resulted into loss of lives among others, if not for the timely intervention of police operatives.

    “The command, through its operatives, has commenced full scale investigation into an alleged food poisoning at Akwuke axis of Enugu metropolis in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.’’

    According to the spokesperson, a man is suspected to have poisoned the said food.
