The police commissioner explained that the command had received 38 reports on armed robbery and arrested 90 suspects.

He said that so far, 22 of the armed robbery cases were in court while nine were under investigation.

The police chief also said 31 suspected kidnappers allegedly involved in 17 abductions were arrested during the period.

He stressed that the command was committed to fighting crime and bringing it to the barest minimum in the state.

Gwandu attributed the achievements recorded by the command in the last three months to the determination of the personnel to tackle all forms of criminal activities in the state.

Meanwhile, two prominent people in the state, Mr Andy Ehanire, a brother to the Minister of state for Health, and Chief Osayomore Joseph, a social crusader and musician, are still being held by kidnappers.

Nigeria at 57: Obaseki approves release of 70 prisoners

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo has approved the release of 70 inmates from various prisons across the state as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 57th independence anniversary.

Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, said this in a statement he made available to journalists in Benin on Sunday.

He quoted the governor as saying that the 70 inmates to be released had been in prisons for a considerable time, some of them Obaseki noted had been in such condition for not less than two years without trial.

Obaseki said that the order for the release of the inmates was a step toward improving the justice delivery system in the state and to reduce the number of awaiting-trial inmates by 50 per cent.

According to him, the move is also part of the Federal Government’s policy aimed at  de-congesting prisons.

He, however, stated that the inmates would be ‘’sternly cautioned’’ to stay away from crime before they could be let go.

According to the governor’s aide, Obaseki also attended church service at the Christ Embassy Zonal Headquarters, Benin to mark the independence anniversary.

At the occasion, the governor urged Nigerians to be grateful for the opportunity to co-exist peacefully for 57 years.

The governor said: “We are united as a nation and poised for greatness.

“As a country, we are endowed, the problem is not Nigeria, we only need to change our attitude as a people and the nation will certainly grow and develop and our people will prosper.”

He further advised Nigerians to be much more productive to enable them get ahead in the new dispensation, stressing that the era of easy oil money was over.

Obaseki also called on the leaders in all spheres of society to go back to their communities and organise their people into various activities toward spurring the country to greatness.

The Head of the church, Pastor Moses Olayemi, called on Nigerians to always have positive thoughts toward the country and themselves, no matter how challenging their circumstances might be.

FAAN, NAMA, Edo partner to improve airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) have expressed readiness to partner Edo State government to improve facilities and safety at Benin Airport.

FAAN Managing Director Mr. Saleh Dunoma, NAMA Chief Executive Capt. Fola Akinkuotu and Governor Godwin Obaseki agreed on the partnership after inspecting facilities at the airport yesterday.

The governor said his administration was committed to utilisation of resources to reconstruct the airport.

He said the tour of the airport was to assess its potential for elevation to a standard that would boost economic activities.

“We have approached FAAN and NAMA to assist us in improving structural outlook and facilities of the airport.

“We have agreed that the plan is to first upgrade the facilities by deploying right landing facilities.

“This will ensure the airport is run for 24 hours. This will encourage more planes to come into the state to build the required traffic,” Obaseki said.

He said the state would work with the two agencies to expand airport’s space before end of the year.

The governor said the airport’s land encroached on by grabbers would be recovered, adding, however, that occupants with genuine certificates of occupancy would be compensated.

Dunoma said it was the responsibility of FAAN to maintain the airport.

He noted that the commitment shown by the government to reconstruct the airport was legendary.

Dunoma said: “I thank the governor for showing the direction. With this partnership, we can do a lot more to bring Benin Airport to full operation.

“We have inspected the facilities and will submit a report on what we need to do to improve safety and facilities at the airport.

Akinkuotu said joint effort was needed to improve standard at the airport, adding that collaboration with the government would help achieve it.

  • No industrial growth with paper certificate alone – Obaseki

No industrial growth with paper certificate alone – Obaseki

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo said investment in vocational education is fundamental to job creation and industrialisation of the state as well as the country as oil revenue continues to dwindle.

Obaseki said this on Tuesday when he received donations made by the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association ( NECA ) in collaboration with the Industrial Training Funds ( ITF ), at Government Science Technical College, Benin.

He commended the organisations for the donating electrical equipment and tools to the technical college.

According to him, no country can grow industrially with `paper certificate’ alone; it must have technical skills to make the needed difference.

The governor noted that most industrialised countries had in their workforces, people with vocational training who might not be university graduates.

He said that plans were underway to set up three or five megawatts of power on the Government Science Technical College premises for its light industrial park to ensure constant electricity supply.

The governor gave the assurance that the donated items would be judiciously utilised.

Earlier, the Director-General of NECA, Mr Olusegun Oshinowo, thanked the state government for emphasising improvement in vocational and technical education.

Oshinowo said that the biggest challenge facing Nigeria was that of unemployment due to lack of technical skills to make youths employable.

He urged that all hands should be on deck to tackle the challenge.

The Principal of the college, Mrs Bose Imafidon, said that the benefitting electrical department was one of 10 departments with highest enrolment.

Imafidon pledged to use the equipment for the intended purpose.

The News Agency og Nigerian (NAN) reports that the other equipment and tools included desktop monitors, contact voltage regulators, prismatic fluorescent fittings and bundles of cables.

  • Benin DisCo to improve supply in Edo comunity

Benin DisCo to improve supply in Edo comunity

Residents of Usen community in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State will soon begin to enjoy improved power supply as the Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC) will soon add 7.5MVA to the existing 7.5MVA transformer installed, Edo State BEDC Chief State Head Fidelis Obishai has said.

He spoke at the third quarter information sharing/customer forum of BEDC held across select communities in Ologbo, Ulemo and Usen areas of Edo State. He apologised to the residents of Usen community for the poor power supply to the area.

Obishai explained that the poor supply to the community existed before BEDC came on board, stressing that replacement cost for the transformer was huge. He noted that it was due to the inadequate capacity of the 7.5MVA transformer that resulted into massive load-shedding in the community.

He urged members of the Ologbo community under Ikpoba/Okha Local Government to form an Electricity Committee that would help fast-track issues on power supply to their area, saying that the community was not relegated by BEDC because of its strategic position as an oil producing community.

Edo State, he said, has over 1,000 communities in BEDC, and that the company gets less than the required amount of electricity from the national grid to guarantee regular power supply to those communities and that the power supply to BEDC comes from           Transmission Company in Benin and through Oghara in Delta State. He said: “Ologbo as an oil producing community is not relegated in the scheme of things.”

He urged residents of Ulemo community in Oredo Local Government to pay their electricity bills promptly to enable BEDC embark on faulty equipment repairs in their area and attend to other issues with prompt dispatch.

He described Ulemo community as a peaceful and most organised out of the locations chosen for the customer engagement sessions.

Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) Research and Advocacy Executive Director, Mr. Sunday Oduntan, told customers that massive metering of customers, though desirable, was constrained by many factors, particularly energy theft through bypass, illegal connections and load diversion.

He urged customers to report those bypassing their meters by way of whistle blowing, saying that the prevalence of bypass, especially in Edo was militating against metering.

”BEDC out of the 11 DisCos has the highest metering rollout in the last three years. People must know that electricity is no longer a free commodity or service like roads, which government is expected to provide. Electricity is also not cheap as BEDC like other DisCos buys electricity from the generation end at N68 and sells at N31.50, thereby underselling its product,” he said.

Most of the communities complained about poor supply, estimated billing, metering, faulty meters and fallen poles.

BEDC management advised the customers to make use of BEDC’s payment channels and ensure prompt payment of their electricity bills.

  • Edo to reduce inmates awaiting trial by half

Edo to reduce inmates awaiting trial by half

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has vowed to work with security agencies to decongest the population of awaiting trial inmates.

Obaseki spoke at the quarterly Federal and State Security Administrators’ Meeting (FSSAM) yesterday at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Benin City, Edo State.

On herdsmen challenge, the governor said: “The herdsmen we knew in the past were only concerned about their cows, and had no business with maps. But with what we now witness, it has become imperative to seek the support of security agencies for a safe and secure business climate.”

Obaseki noted that the proliferation of hate speeches has become a national concern that must be nipped in the bud, as it portends implications not just for the people but also for attracting investment.

He said: “We are revamping Operation Thunderstorm in the state, a security initiative set up by my predecessor, former Governor Adams Oshiomole. We intend on improving the security infrastructure in the state. In this regard, we need the cooperation of members of security services who are in Edo State, including the Military, Police, and others.

“We want to decongest prisons.  We are working to reduce number of persons in the prisons. We want to reduce inmates by 50 per cent. We want to relocate the prison at Sapele road by expanding Oko prisons.”

  • Edo, Oshiomhole and road to nation building

Prosperity is the reward we will get for good planning, good foudation and vissionary blue print when we talk of nations building. When the word NIGERIA floats across my thoughts, I see a swathe that comprises of regions,  states, local council areas, wards, communities, families and individuals; all desperately in need of actual development.

The question is, how readily prepared are we collectively and individuals as a people to instigate the emergent of a great nation by imploring our selfless positive orientation to make the diffence as patriotic citizens? Can we truly dispense our contractual obligations when elected or appointed as public office holder without cancerous sentiment namely: nepotism, tribalism, factionism, favouritism and selfishness.

Owan West Local government area, my place of birth as a case study is one of the poorest and underdevelop local government area amongst the 18 local government in Edo state has a lot of challenges that is synomous to other rural local governmennt area in Nigeria. The local council is plagued with high rate of unemployement, lack of basic  amenities, fastructural decay, absence  of maternity home and or dispensery facilities, leading to avoidable deaths, poor road network and lack of markets and other statutory and constitutional responsibility of local governments.

The setback may not have arisen as a result of lack of managerial acumen on the part of the immediate past and present occupiers of the  councils or they are not doing their best for the citizens. It’s  essencially because majority of the populace and some grassroots political actors have chosen to exchange true development for political sentiment, messiah for devil, economic boyancy for stomach infastructure and selfish political ambition.

Recently, the former governor Comrades Adams Oshiomhole has been under intense criticism for airing his views on restructuring after his 8-year of successful tenure. Such outright adumbration and “Pull Him Down” (PHD) voyage is not new to Comrade Oshiomhole. Every great man of historical achievemoment as Comrade Oshiomhole is usually a victim of divergent opinions. Even Jesus christ, before and after His cruxification on the cross for the redemption of mankind is yet fo be accepted by many different faith.

Oshiomole, the once upon a time “Talk-and-do” aka “osho baba” a man with vision and good heart demostrated his patriotism to the great people of Edo State in so many areas such infastructural development, educational reform, job creation etc. far above what he met when he assume office as a governor. Whether you like it or not, Oshiomhole left a legacy that most sons and daughters of Edo State if not all, are proud of today. However, he is still been critisized today by people of different school of thought because however hard you try as a leader, you can’t meet the needs of everybody.

The success of every political leader is the solid foundation upon which his or her successor continued the process of state re-engineering, both sociopolitical and socioeconomic development for the good of all. The story of Oshiomhole’s 8-year governorship of Governor Godwin Obaseki who has,  less than one year in office, has shown the people of Edo State the meaning of inclusive governance.

Governor Godwin Obaseki is expectedly building on the the foundation built by Adams Oshiomhole as the incumbent governor of the state. He has, since he assumed office, proven to be a man of astute chacrater and devotion, depicting the true meaning of being a tecnhocrat within a very short period of time. He has achieved what most governors of other states could not do in their 4 years term in office. Despite his visible achievements to date and many more to come, he still faces critizism from never do well politicians. In truth, Governor Obaseki has been blazing the trail. Let us give kudos and honour to those whom honour his due.

It is clear from the outset that Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s administration will excel as governor. It’s heartwarming that Professor Julius Ihonvbere, an achiever of all time in all areas of endeavour, enigma of intellectual, God sent messiah to our generation, known for his egalitarian philosophy and principles is part Godwin Obaseki’s succees story so far.

Prof. Ihonvbere’s uncountable developmental strides and contributions to the people of Owan  West is legendary. This is the more reason our people should avoid acrimonious politics of sentiment and hatred that has dominated the livelihood of most people by upholding politics oneness and development. The good professor has a lot to offer to the state and the federation.

Therefore, those who are clamouring to become chairman of Owan West local government has to be positive towards the development of the entire local council. We must not give room to political sentiment, triabalism, factionism, selfishness and nepotism. It has no place in economic and developmental stride we seek in modern days politics. We must not fail to identify with the less previledge by extending hand of fellowship to our people who needs help at all times. That’s where the likes of Prof. Ihonvbere stand out.

Our nation Nigeria is what it is today because we fail to do the right thing yestarday. We cannot correct today in today but we can sure accept today as it is and focusing on a better tomorrow but correcting our tomorrow in our today by doing the right thing that will make tomorrow a better day in the kind od choice we make today.

We must collectively say good bye to politics of sentiment. Every one of us have to join hand together to support the government of Godwin Obaseki, rather than condemning it. Let us all try in giving back to our community in our own little way rather than taking from them, directly or indirectly.
