  • Ekiti 2018: NUJ rallies against election violence

Journalists in Ekiti State on Wednesday marched through the streets of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, to warn residents against involvement in electoral violence.

Acting under the aegis of the Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the media practitioners urged residents to conduct themselves peacefully at the poll and not to plunge the state into chaos before, during and after the poll.

The march which was tagged: “Public Awareness/Rally on Peaceful Election in Ekiti State,” started at the NUJ Secretariat, Oke Bareke and took the journalists through Isato, Irona, Ijigbo, Old Garage, Okeyinmi, Okesa, Ojumose, Atikankan areas of the city.

Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and students and officials of the Ado-Ekiti Campus of the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) also participated in the rally.

Participants at the rally carried placards and distributed leaflets denouncing violence, arson, electoral malpractices and other behavior that could cause breakdown of law and order.

The rally was given protection by officers and men of the Ekiti State Police Command while operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) assisted to prevent traffic gridlock.

Some of the placard reads: “We Want Peace in Ekiti,” “Vote, Not Fight, Election No Be War,” “Remember Your Life Is Very Precious,” “Shun Electoral Violence,” “Your Vote Is Your Power, Vote Right,” “Don’t Allow Yourselves To Be Used as Thugs,” among others.

The marchers reached out to residents in their homes, market women, commercial drivers, commercial motorcycle riders, commuters, Hausa and Igbo traders.

Traders at Irona and Bisi Markets commended the journalists for the enlightenment campaign which they said was apt and timely as Election Day approaches.

Speaking at the rally, Ekiti NUJ Chairman, Rotimi Ojomoyela, urged the people of the state not to allow the forthcoming poll to be marred by violence.

Ojomoyela said the rally was the contribution of the NUJ to a peaceful electoral process urging politicians, voters and other stakeholders to maintain peace for the poll to be successful.

He explained that the NUJ is a non-partisan body but is concerned about loss of lives which is always trail the conduct of elections in Nigeria.

Ojomoyela said: “This rally was organized to send a message that election violence does not pay and we want to appeal to our people to say no to violence.

“Election is a civic duty and should be done peacefully; we urge eligible voters to go to their polling stations on Election Day and vote peacefully for the candidates of their choice.

“We urge politicians not to use our children and youths as thugs and we also warn our younger generation not to allow themselves to be used to cause mayhem at election.

“Ekiti is a peaceful state, the NUJ is for peace and we will continue to advocate for peace. All stakeholders in the electoral process must give peace a chance.”

The NUJ Vice Chairman, Aderonke Samo, urged Ekiti youths not to allow politicians to destroy their future by using them to unleash terror at election period.

She said: “Our youths must realize that they have their own lives to live and they should not be tools for violence. Who tells you that you too cannot become president, governor or senator in the nearest future.

“We don’t want anybody’s blood to be used as sacrifice for election, our youths be warned! We are also calling on our parents to rein in their wards, so that they will not be used to burn houses, vehicles and vandalize properties.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi slam Fayose for owing Ekiti monarchs arrears

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has promised to end the sufferings being experienced by the people of the state under the administration of Governor Ayo Fayose.
Fayemi accused Fayose of inflicting hardship on the various segments of the population including workers, school pupils, parents, business owners transporters and traditional rulers.
He revealed that apart from workers owed arrears of between five and nine month arrears of salaries, Fayose is also allegedly owing traditional rulers five month arrears of allowances.
Fayemi also berated the governor for refusing to disclose the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) since coming to power in 2014.
Speaking during a special interview programme on Voice 89.9 FM Sunday night, Fayemi said Fayose had no excuse to be owing workers noting that N253 billion has accrued to the Ekiti treasury apart from other financial reliefs from the APC federal Government.
A vote for the APC ticket, according to him, is a vote for commitment to the positive transformation of Ekiti, experience in governance and connection with Abuja to influence development in favour of the state and its people.
Fayemi promised to expand the scope of his eight-point agenda to launch Ekiti on the path of development again regretting that the state has retrogressed under Fayose’s watch as the governor has discarded human development policies of the preceding government.
He regretted that Fayose allegedly played politics and denied Ekiti the opportunity of accessing funds meant for rice production by the Federal Government despite the fact that an Ekiti indigene his (Fayemi’s) former Commissioner, Mr. Jide Arowosafe is in charge of the Anchor Borrowers Scheme.
Fayemi stated that states like Kebbi, Jigawa and Ogun had benefited from noting that Ekiti would have used the funds to develop rice production in Igbemo-Ekiti and other rice belts in the state.
The APC flag bearer also debunked the allegation of the PDP-led government that he is seeking a return to power to revenge against workers saying he is on a rescue mission and not on vengeance mission against anybody.
He said: “On what basis should I come on a vengeance mission? Nobody has offended me, the secret of June 21st 2014 is quite open to us all. We all know of Capt. Koli, Koro (Obanikoro) and few others.”
Criticizing Fayose for alleged anti-people policies, Fayemi said: “You refused to pay teachers for ten months but you are saying ‘we may not pay your salaries but the man coming wants to sack you.’
“During Fayemi’s (first) administration, no final year secondary school student paid WAEC, NECO, NABTEB and JAMB fees but now, pupils from primary to SS3 students are now paying taxes.
“He called teachers to the Government House sometime ago and a woman among them told him the truth. My government didn’t charge any pupil or student a dime.
“We ran a qualitative, free and functional education while I was the governor. Pupils now pay tax, pay for SSCE, no more free JAMB forms. Ekiti now has the lowest enrollment in Education in Southwest as it is today which is strange to us all.
“We didn’t owe workers monthly salary except for September 2014 and this was because the (then) incoming government approached our financial institutions and opted to halt our arrangements.
“We had regular training and re-training for workers in Ekiti, we paid core subject allowances, rural allowances to teachers, car loans, housing loans to our workers.
“I heard that all what I did for Obas have been stopped, in fact, our Obas are being owed five months salaries. Did all these happen when I was in government?”
Fayemi added that Fayose’s alleged harsh and unfriendly policies have driven investors away with many businesses closing down leading to loss of jobs.
“Our administration revived Ire Burnt Bricks Industry, brought back Ikogosi Warm Spring, enterprise grew in Ekiti during my time. When I came in, the only two prominent hotels were Pathfinder and Fountain and there was deluge of people coming.
“I spoke with all these people and they brought their investment here but when I left, they all regretted but today, GTB is gone, Coca Cola is gone, Ire Burnt Bricks is struggling and Gossy Water is dead because Fayose’s government is anti-investment.
“IGR rose to N600m before I left office as we declared what came in monthly but no one has heard of Ekiti IGR since I left.”
Fayemi said all what he did with Ekiti funds during his first term in office are there for all to see as his government paid stipends to aged people, youth volunteers, constructed roads, palaces, markets, civic centres, town halls and other key projects.
He assured that the APC administration apart from putting an end to the suffering of Ekiti people will execute policies that will boost their standard of living.

  • Ekiti 2018: Battle for governor’s seat heats up

As the campaigns for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State enters a crucial stage, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu and Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, examine the chances of the parties and their candidates

AHEAD of the July 14 Governorship Election in Ekiti State, the various political parties hoping to participate in the election have nominated their flag bearers. A good number of them have also named the running mates of their candidates. All these, according to political analysts, signify the commencement of the real battle over who the next occupiers of the Government House should be.

Going by the list of parties and their candidates as released by the Independent National Electoral Commission Election (INEC) during the week, 38 governorship candidates will be slugging it out at the polls in July, although some pundits and conservative political observers insist the battle will actually be fought by not more than four leading political parties and their candidates.

Beside the political parties, the frontline contenders in the election remain the immediate former governor of the state who is the current Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the incumbent Deputy Governor of the state, Olusola Eleka, of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who has the backing of Governor Ayodele Fayose, respectively.

However, on INEC list are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has Eleka as its flag-bearer, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which has Gbenga Adekunle as its flag bearer, All Progressives Congress, (APC), which Fayemi as its flag bearer, Progressives Peoples’ Alliance, PPA, with Goke Animashaun as the candidate and the United Democratic Party, UDP, which nominated Olusegun Adeleye.

Other parties and their candidates are the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), with Ogundipe Lawrence as the candidate and the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), with Ebenezer Femi Ogunsakin as the flag bearer; Social Democratic Party (SDP) with Akinloye Aiyegbusi as candidate, Action Democratic Party (ADP) with Segun Adewale as its flag bearer; African Democratic Congress (ADC) with Ayodele Adesua and Alliance for Democracy (AD) with Agboola Olaniyi, among others.

While the APC have announced its readiness to stop Eleka and the PDP from remaining in the Government House beyond 2018, Fayose, who insists that his achievement in the last four years will return his party to office come July 14, has vowed that no party, aside PDP, will emerge victorious in the election. This is just as some other candidates and parties are optimistic of victory as the date draws nearer.

One of those exuding optimism is former Deputy Governor, Abioudun Aluko, who is reported to have been given the nod to fly the banner of the Accord Party on July 14 in spite of the fact that INEC listed one Ilesanmi Anike Margaret as the party’s candidate. “Many attempts have been made unethically by the enemies of our dear state to crumb the great vision by unpatriotically denying me a platform to showcase my interest. But God in his majesty has put them behind us and they have been put to shame,” Aluko said, while announcing his candidacy on the platform of the Accord Party last Friday.

    Olusola Eleka

The emergence of the deputy governor, Prof Olusola Eleka, as the candidate of PDP was not without fierce political intrigues. Many have argued that Fayose practically forced his number two man on the party contrary to the wishes of many PDP top players. The highlight of the intrigues that brought Eleka into the governorship race as a candidate is the exit of former Minister, Dayo Adeyeye, from the ruling party.

Eleka scored 1,190 to defeat Adeyeye, the only challenger in the race, who scored 771 votes. But Adeyeye alleged that Fayose forced many of the delegates to vote for his preferred candidate contrary to the agreement reached before the primary election. He vowed to work against the victory of the PDP candidate in the July election.

The 49 year old university don is from Ikere-Ekiti. Until his election as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Eleka was a teacher in the Department of Building, Obafemi Awolowo University, where he had lectured for 24 years. His research interests are mainly in the field of Alternative Building Materials Development for Housing Construction, Construction Technology and Structural Mechanics.

While his supporters are quick to call him the ‘stabilising factor’ in the current administration, led by Fayose, not a few observers of the politics of the state argued that he is more or less a lame duck deputy who has brought nothing to bear on the administration. “Eleka as deputy governor is so colourless that many people refer to him as Fayose’s Personal Assistant. One wonders the type of governor he will be,” Ebun Olubodun, former spokesperson of the Action Congress in the state said.

“I know it is a divine project and those doubting should wait and see in the end what it is going to be. Power comes from God and He gives it willingly. Some say I am promoting my deputy. I am not, but I am only doing the will of God. When we do His will, there is no need to fear. We are going to that Promised Land. This is God’s project and it won’t fail,” Fayose had said while explaining the chances of his political godson at the forthcoming governorship election.

    Kayode Fayemi

The victory of Dr. Kayode Fayemi at the APC governorship primary election, though foretold by some pundits, was not without initial hitches that threatened to tear the party apart. But many thanks to the intervention and wisdom of some prominent leaders of the party in the Southwest, the then budding crisis was nipped and the former governor went ahead to pick the party’s nomination by defeating about 30 other aspirants in the race.

Fayemi polled 941 votes, followed by another former governor, Segun Oni, who got 481 votes, while Kayode Ojo, with 281votes, came third. In fact, the contest for the gubernatorial ticket was mainly between the two former governors of Ekiti. And contrary to heightened fear in many quarters that the outcome of the primary election will lead to the exit of some of the aspirants, none of them dumped the party.

It would be recalled that Fayemi, a native of Isan-Ekiti in Oye Local Government of Ekiti State, lost his re-election bid to Governor Fayose in 2014 and was appointed minister in 2015. A scholar with interest in peace and conflict resolution, his research and policy interests include: Democratisation, Constitutionalism, Security Sector Governance, and Regionalism in the Global Context.

Many of his supporters are quick to say Fayemi remains the only person who can defeat the PDP in Ekiti State given that he trounced the party and its candidate in 2010 to emerge as the governor of the state. But those not in his support insist he will have to reach out to the ordinary people of Ekiti better this time around if he desires to be victorious in the forthcoming election.

““All other aspirants ‎are my friends and colleagues, and I am going to work with them to ensure that our great party emerges winner in the forthcoming gubernatorial election,” he said. Adding his voice, President Muhammadu Buhari said, “Fayemi’s track record in the state as a reformist, with a penchant for building educational infrastructure and promoting the welfare of the ordinary people, will bolster his chances at the forthcoming polls.”

    Segun Adewale

Former factional state chairman of the PDP in Lagos State, Segun Adewale, had earlier declared his intention to rule Ekiti State on the platform of the ruling PDP. But the victory of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the party put paid to his desire to clinch the PDP governorship ticket. Undaunted, he berthed in the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and wasted no time in securing its ticket.

Adewale clinched the ADP ticket with 16,890 votes out of the total votes of 17,600 which is 96 percent of all the votes cast at various wards across the 16 local government areas in Ekiti State. The party had adopted the option A4 in deciding who its flag-bearer would be. His supporters say his victory at the primary election testifies to his widespread acceptability across the state.

Popularly known as Segun Aeroland, the ADP candidate is a native of Ipoti EKiti in Ijero Local Government Area of the state. He ran for the Federal House of Representatives, Alimosho Federal Constituency in Lagos State in 2011 on the platform of the PDP but lost the election to Solomon Olamilekan Adeola of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The election was reportedly marred by violence.

Adewale has promised to fix the power as a matter of urgency giving a three months’ timeline to restore electricity to affected communities.  He also said that he will generate 10 megawatts in each of the three senatorial districts of the state. He has also made a promise to the civil servants that he will clear all the outstanding salaries of workers and that of pensioners within his first six months. He charged Ekiti people to vote massively for his party, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) at the polls to bring about a paradigm shift in the governing and running of the state.

Issues that may shape the voting

Aside calibre of candidates and acceptability of political parties, observers said there are some other issues that may play major roles in determining the eventual winner of the Ekiti election. Such issues, we learnt, include, but may not be limited to zoning, consideration of the performance index of the two political parties, APC and APC, which have governed the state in recent times; the rivalry between Fayose and Fayemi and to a lesser extent, religious sentiments.

    Zoning:

Although the argument may differ amongst the leading political parties in the contest, our investigation shows that zoning may likely play a major role in the forthcoming election. It would be recalled that it dominated discussion during the campaigns leading to the primaries. Now that the parties have elected their candidates, it remains to be seen how the zoning factor will either favour them or serve as one of the major hurdles they must cross.

Advocates of zoning are saying that out of the three senatorial districts in the state, only Ekiti South has not produced an elected governor. They argued that Ekiti North has produced twice (2007 – 2010, and 2010 – 2014). Ekiti Central has equally tasted the governorship thrice (1999 – 2003, 2003 – 2006 and 2014 to date). This, they said accounts for their demand for the governorship slot to be ceded to Ekiti South. Olugbenga Olagoke, commenting on the zoning demand told The Nation on Friday that this was the reason “The Ekiti South Senatorial District has the highest number of aspirants ahead of the 2018 election.” Another source, a top member of one of the major political parties however countered that zoning is not the major concern of average Ekiti electorates today. “What we want is a governor that will bring back the glory of Ekiti. That is what will count on the Election Day because we are tired of the current show of shame,” he said.

    APC/PDP performance:

Notwithstanding the large number of participants in the race, some informed observers said the central issue will boil down to the performance of Fayose-led PDP government and Fayemi-led APC government before now. “No one is deceived here in Ekiti. We know the battle is between PDP and APC. APC handed over to the current PDP government almost four years ago. So, the major question our electorates will ask before voting in the forthcoming election is how the two parties fared when they had opportunity to govern the state. It is a simple case. We will simply refer to their performance index and make up our minds on who should lead us,” says Olagoke.

    Fayose/Fayemi rivalry:

Closely related to this factor is the well-known political rivalry between Fayose and Fayemi. Olagoke said “whether we like it or not, many of the supporters of APC and PDP see the forthcoming political contest in Ekiti as another opportunity to settle the rivalry between Fayemi and Fayose. Depending on how you see it, the two political leaders are set to make a definitive point about their influence.”

    Religious sentiment:

Another issue some observers have mentioned that may be an election issue is the religious factor. They said Muslims are likely to note if the choice of the party’s candidate or deputy governorship candidate would represent their interests. But The Nation investigation suggests that religion has hardly played a major role in Ekiti State politics. This does not however mean that it is not being discussed today.

For example, late last year, while responding to a request made by the Muslim community for the deputy governor’s position, Fayose had said “I have nothing against Muslims; they are our brothers and sisters. If I had a Muslim as my deputy, for instance, I would not be the one interfacing with you all the time; the person would do that. I just want us to continue to pray for God’s guidance. He will surely see us through.

“Since our candidate is from Ikere-Ekiti in the South Senatorial District, one thing that is obvious now is that the deputy will come from either Central or North Senatorial District. I just have to appreciate the support of our Muslim brothers and sisters and solicit more support as we approach the election period.”

He made the statement during the Jumat to mark the third anniversary of his administration in the state, adding that God will guide him and his party to make the right choice.

When he eventually picked Kazeem Ayodeji Ogunsakin, a Muslim, as Eleka’s running mate, the Grand Imam of Ekiti State and Chief Imam of Ado-Ekiti, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello, specifically commended him for the action. The cleric spoke at a rally organised at Fajuyi Park in Ado-Ekiti for Olusola and Ogunsakin by the Muslim Community to endorse the duo for the July 14 governorship poll.

Kewulere, who is also the President of the League of Imams and Alfas in Southwest, Edo and Delta States said: “We asked for four things from the governor and he has done three things now; this third is so surprising. We had told him that since he has supported a Christian governorship candidate, we want a deputy and we have been expecting.

“We have said any party that fails to choose one of us as deputy governor, we will not support. But Governor Fayose has chosen one of us, Kazeem,” he said.

Given the quality of the candidates, the rivalry between PDP and APC on the one hand and between Fayemi and Fayose on the other, including the other major issues that are likely to determine the choice of the voters, it seems obvious that the July governorship election promises to be intriguing.

  • Ekiti 2018: Omoyeni to run as PANDEL candidate

A former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Adebisi Omoyeni has secured the ticket of People Alliance for National Development and Liberty Party (PANDEL) to contest the July 14 governorship election.

Omoyeni, a former WEMA Bank Managing Director, addressed reporters yesterday in his Ikere-Ekiti country home.

The politician pledged that if elected, his administration’s industrialisation agenda would be anchored on agriculture and education to give the state a new economy and change its character from the civil service state tag.

He pledged to create within four years at least 10,000 high-paying agriculture and agro-allied jobs for the youths of the state.

“Within four years, we will give Ekiti a new character that will be different from the tag of civil service state. Our government will target rice, cocoa and cassava production and build industry and wealth around the value chain by partnering with key industries and private sector.

“We will create 10,000 quality jobs through integrating production of rice, cocoa and cassava with industrial processors. We will bring young people into farming by organising them into cooperatives and link them up as out-growers to industrial off-takers.”

The PANDEL candidate bemoaned the poor revenue generating capacity of the state, saying it was the reason Ekiti cannot pay the salary of its workers and pensioners as at when due.

Omoyeni said: “A major crisis facing Ekiti State today is very poor revenue profile. My administration will tackle this headlong and my experience as a banker will be leveraged to achieve this within a very short time. We will unlock the dead economic assets of the people by ensuring, within 12 months, that our people can have Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) on their landed properties which they can use to access credit from banks to do their businesses.

“The total bank credit in Nigeria in Ekiti is less than 0.3 per cent. This is abysmally low. It is only through economic activities of the people that Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state can be boosted without putting tax burden on our people. My administration will work to increase the monthly state IGR to, at least, N1 billion within 18 months.”

  • Ekiti 2018: ‘Fayose’s unpaid salaries will make our victory easier’

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Ekiti State, Mr.Makinde Araoye, has said failure of Governor Ayo Fayose’s government to pay salaries as and when due would make victory easy for the opposition in the July 14 governorship election.

Araoye expressed confidence that government workers would vote massively for the APC candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, having experienced hard biting poverty in the last three years due to alleged incompetence manifested in Fayose’s inability to pay workers’ salaries and pension.

He said it was wicked for a governor to be owing workers and pensioners eight month arrears in an environment that was heavily anchored on civil service monolithic economy, saying this had further lowered the standard of living of Ekiti populace.

Speaking with reporters on Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Araoye said time has come for workers to appropriate their votes in a more judicious and appropriate way, by voting for Fayemi based on his track records and belief in running worker-friendly policies.

The APC chieftain said it sounded unfathomable for Fayose to intentionally kill those legacy programmes initiated by Fayemi that could have shored up the Internally Generated Revenue, pointing out that the measure was largely responsible for the failure of governance
    in Ekiti.

Araoye said: “When the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi came on board in 2010, he appreciated the fact that there was an urgent need to establish those investments that could generate money for our dear state.

“That was why he took N20b from the capital market out of which he invested over N2 billion on Ikogosi Warm Spring, built  the State Pavilion located along Ado New Iyin Road, revived Ire Burnt Brick that was inaugurated by former Kano State Governor, Alhaji Rabiu Musa
Kwankwaso, set a solid foundation for youth engagement in Agriculture and many others.

“Before Dr. Fayemi’s exit, the Ikogosi Warm Spring was already generating over N45 million into the state coffers monthly. The Ire Burnt Brick had begun skeletal production and was attracting serious patronage within and outside Ekiti.

“But today, those programmes have been abandoned. They have returned to that moribund States they were before Dr. Fayemi came on board.

“One wonders why should those programmes be rendered impotent just because of politics by Governor Fayose, even when he makes noise everyday that the state is economically challenged.

“This is the major reason why our people must divorce themselves from unnecessary emotions and vote wisely on July 14.

“They should resist attempt by clever politicians to delude them into taking decisions that would land them in more sufferings and gnashing of teeth after all they have seen and made to pass through in the last few years.”

Araoye advised Fayose to stop turning Ekiti into a beggarly State in the name of stomach infrastructure, saying: “making our people to queue under a scorching sun for several hours because of a kongo of rice and N200 was not only debasing but ridiculing Ekiti’s collective
    integrity.

“The July 14 election is a reclamation war for all of us. It is a time we must seek our political freedom and this we must realize for those lost glory to return and for us to regain our pride as truly a set of Knowledge people.”

  • Ekiti 2018: NBA tasks security agencies on peaceful election

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ado-Ekiti Branch, has urged security agencies to ensure safety of lives and property before, during and after the July 14 governorship poll in Ekiti State.

Ado-Ekiti NBA Chairman, Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola, made the call while addressing a press conference to mark the commencement of the 8th Annual Law Week of the association.

The theme for this year’s Ado-Ekiti NBA Law Week is: “Insecurity in Nigeria’s Stunted Metamorphosis to Greatness.”

Those that will be honoured at the weeklong event are Justice Bamidele Omotoso, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, Chief Ibuoye Gbadebo and Mr. Oluwadare Oluwatayo with prestigious eminent lawyers’ awards by NBA National President, A.B. Mahmoud.

Adaramola called for strong legal frameworks on how insurgents can be tackled, describing the act of terrorism as a serious danger to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.

The NBA boss noted that although Ekiti is a peaceful state, he tasked the security agencies to ensure that there is breach of peace as the governorship poll approaches.

Adaramola said: “I have the belief that security agencies are up to the task. For the past four years, there is relative peace in Ekiti State.

“I believe that security agencies like the Police, DSS and NSCDC have the capacity to curtail any uprising. Ekiti is peaceful and we believe that this will be maintained during the election.”

In his keynote address, the state Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, lamented that policemen in Nigeria are underpaid, this affects their morale to tackle security challenges.

According to him, insecurity of life will deny the country of investment and retard its development.

He said: “Any nation that lacks adequate security of lives and property will remain undeveloped and will forever struggling to make any meaningful impact in the comity of nations.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayose, FUOYE VC trade words over alleged ‘rigging’ plot

EKITI State governor, Ayo Fayose, and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, on Friday, traded words over alleged plot to rig the July 14 governorship election.

Fayose alleged that Soremekun has lent himself to be used by the ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), by recruiting students of his institution to serve as ad hoc staff at the poll rather than youth corps members.

The governor alleged that Soremekun is a card-carrying member of the APC and a close ally of the party’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Kayode Fayemi.

He alleged that the VC had rigged elections for the APC in the past. Fayose who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, alleged that over 2,000 FUOYE students had been registered as ad hoc staff under Soremekun’s watch.

He claimed they have been ordered to supply bank details of their close relations, so that payments would not be directly linked to them.

Fayose said: “The idea behind this plot is to recruit APC members from neighbouring States, arm them with FUOYE student identity cards and use them as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers to perfect the planned rigging of the election.

This will fail.” “Today, we are beginning to receive signals to the effect that clandestine moves are being made to subvert the will of Ekiti people. With the failure of their “Ondo Option”, other evil means are now being devised.

“Despite that we have over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State and it has been the general practice to engage the NYSC members in elections across the country, the APC in collusion with INEC have asked that students of FUOYE be recruited as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.

“We are in possession of an Internal Memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, FUOYE seeking registration of students of the University as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers for the Election.

But Soremekun who denied the governor’s allegation, described it as “blatant falsehood” stressing that INEC is the agency in charge of recruiting ad hoc staff for the elections.

The Ogun State born university administrator who also denied being an APC card-carrying member said this would not be the first time that Fayose had attempted to blackmail him.

Soremekun said the Ekiti governor had attacked him over his refusal to assist his (Fayose’s) party (PDP) at the September 2016 Edo State governorship election, where he (Soremekun) served as the chief returning officer.
