  • Ekiti 2018: PDP’s crumbling peace accord

Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that the recent Peoples Democratic Party’s peace accord may have crumbled as the leaders go back to the trenches ahead the party primaries

The remnants of the peace accord procured by a delegation that included the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, and former President of the Senate, David Mark, barely a week ago for the Ekiti State chapter of the opposition party, continued to shred all through the week as gubernatorial spirants and other chieftains of the party renewed allegations of high-handedness and political thuggery against Governor Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Professor Kolapo Olusola.

“If the governor’s camp is not properly called to order, the PDP will lose Ekiti State. If the violence and attacks on party members just because they are supporting Adeyeye or Olujimi continue, PDP will lose the support of even its own members across the state and both Fayose and Olusola, as well as those encouraging them to despise other PDP leaders now, will pay a huge political price,” an elderly party chieftain in Ikere-Ekiti, who sought anonymity, told The Nation.

“Reports about the ongoing party congresses from across the state give the indications that the peace accord reached a week ago is crumbling. Fayose promised not to interfere in the primary election, but he is hand-picking delegates that will vote in the same delegate. He has reneged on the promises he made to our leaders during the peace accord and the implication is that Ekiti PDP will go into the election divided,” our source warned.

Fayose has been constantly accused of a plot to impose his deputy, Olusola, on the party as its governorship candidate for the July election in the state. Amidst crises that threatened the chances of the party at the polls, a number of aspirants and their supporters have dumped the party while some others insist they will not leave the party nor will they allow Fayose have his way.

Worried about the unpleasant developments, the national leadership of the PDP, after months of pockets of interventions that failed to yield fruits, decided to take the bull by the horn. Leading other party leaders, Secondus and Mark stormed Ekiti and summoned Fayose, Olusola and other aspirants and party leaders to a peace parley which resulted in a much hyped peace accord.

Other governorship hopefuls at the parley, aside Olusola, were the Senate Minority Whip, Biodun Olujimi and former Minister for Works, Dayo Adeyeye. Consequently, not only did Fayose say he would give room for a free and fair primary election, he also added that he will temporarily relocate from Ekiti during the primary to ensure his neutrality, saying that without being physically present on the day of election, he would still win the election for his party.

“I want the other aspirants to be comfortable. The ultimate is to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti and Nigeria. I will not do anything that would undermine this process, the party and aspirants. In a matter like this, there will be many interests. I am for Olusola but I will stand by whosoever wins the primaries,” Fayose had assured those present at the peace parley.

In return, Olujimi and Adeyeye pledged to accept the result of the primary provided it was free, fair and transparent. Secondus said: “I assure you once again that there will be transparency and the process would not cheat anybody. I urge you to join the leaders to work together to ensure free, fair and transparent primaries. Trusted and eminent Nigerians will conduct the primaries.

Mark, who chaired the reconciliation committee, said the party has been working on bringing peace to Ekiti by reconciling all parties and that has been done very well, adding: “I thank you for the peaceful agreement to work together. I assure you that the process leading to the final election of whoever will become PDP candidate in Ekiti for the July poll will be free, fair and credible.

    Things falling apart

But with the election about three months away and the state PDP congresses to elect delegates that will vote at the primary election now generating more controversies across the state, observers of the politics of the state say the peace accord may have collapsed. Reports say not only are the processes of the congresses across the state being interfered with, supporters of gubernatorial aspirants are also being attacked and prevented from participating in the processes.

State coordinator of the PDP Youth Volunteers, (PYV) group within the party, Tayo Olubodun, while speaking with The Nation, lamented what he described as “the criminal manner in which delegates were being decided across the state.” The PDP chieftain called on Governor Fayose to be wary of those advising him to flout all democratic rules in his quest to force his deputy on the party as gubernatorial candidate.

“Daily, we are hearing tales of how people are being prevented from exercising their rights as party members to determine who their delegates will be. Stories of how aides of the governor are going round with ready-made lists and announcing names when people are supposed to be voting abound across the state. This is happening after the governor signed a peace accord to allow democracy to thrive. I am afraid the accord has failed,” he lamented.

But another chieftain of the party, Hon. Tade Fatukasi, accused those opposed to Olusola’s ambition of crying foul over nothing just to paint the process in bad light. He wondered where all the alleged happenings transpired. According to him, party members at ward and council levels have been electing delegates peacefully all through the week.

“It is unfortunate that some people are determined to cause problem in the PDP before jumping to the parties they really want to use to contest the next governorship election. They are unpopular in the party and they know. Go round the state and ask questions. People will tell you all these allegations are lies meant to give Governor Fayose and Olusola bad names. But they have all failed,” he said.

In one of the reported incidents of violence, a former Chairman of Ikere Local Government, Banji Aluko, was allegedly beaten up by youths suspected to be supporters of Olusola. “He was accused of working against Ikere Agenda, fashioned by Fayose in support of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola. He is a supporter of Adeyeye,” a party source told The Nation.

Speaking on the incident, Aluko accused Olusola and Hon. Wale Ayeni, a member of the State Assembly, of masterminding the attack. “Our group won election at Ogbonjana ward 7 and we were rejoicing only for these thugs to pounce on me and beat me up. I have reported the case to the police and proper action will be taken against the sponsors,” he said.

    Back in the trenches?

Given the current developments, pundits are predicting a return to the trenches by the gladiators in the Ekiti PDP crisis unless something drastic is urgently done by the national leadership of the party again. Already, Adeyeye, one of the aspirants opposed to Fayose’s choice of Olusola, has raised alarm about what he described as a fresh clampdown on his supporters vowing to resist such henceforth.

Adeyeye, former Minister of State for Works, alleged that suspected thugs loyal to Olusola, led by a legislator, had been launching attacks on his supporters. “If truly Prof Olusola is popular at his hometown, why resorting to beating people and forcing them to swear to an oath to support his ambition in Ikere? This is a manifest sign of rejection at home and flagrant violation of the fundamental rights of association of these people.”

Adeyeye identified his supporters who were allegedly attacked on Sunday to include Ikere Local Government Deputy Chairman, Sunday Olorunfemi, Ikere PDP Treasurer, Tunde Ajewole, former Ikere Local Government Chairman, Banji Aluko, and Gbenga Ayeni. He said they were attacked during the ward congress on Saturday. He called on the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.

But the Director-General of Kolapo Olusola Campaign Organisation (KOCO), Chief Bisi Kolawole, denied the allegation of forcing Adeyeye’s supporters to swear to an oath to switch allegiance to the Deputy Governor. Kolawole alleged that people suspected to be Adeyeye’s supporters attacked Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Ayo Alabi, with masqueraders in Ise-Ekiti (Adeyeye’s hometown), during the congress.

“The issue of putting some people under oath to support the Deputy Governor is not true. Was the oath done with the Bible or traditional means; we challenge them to tell the world. As politicians, we know those working for Adeyeye in Ikere and I want to say that those suffering such fate are double dealers who collect money from Olusola, Adeyeye and Olujimi. If you are for Adeyeye, why do you go to Olusola’s meeting? You came as a spy, why do you double-deal” he asked?

This was just as Fayose’s half-brother, Olanipekun  Oluwayose, on Tuesday defected from the PDP to the Action Democratic Party (ADP). He said he was quitting the PDP due to the alleged failure of his brother during his tenure, adding that the state was now poorer. Oluwayose, who shares the same father with the governor, formally announced his defection in his hometown, Afao-Ekiti, Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Oluwayose also described Fayose’s continuity agenda of endorsing his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as “an attempt to prolong the sufferings of Ekiti people and hold them in servitude.” He said his conscience could not be reconciled with “the directionless situation facing the state.” “How can I ignore the pains that unpaid wages have brought on our people?

“If we want a better society, we must not let our relationship allow us to hold us back from standing by what is right. My decision to dump PDP for ADP is borne out of my patriotism for an Ekiti that works for everyone. “Ekiti is in shambles and we must embrace the right ideas that can take us out of the current economic and social doldrums,” he said.

  • Ekiti 2018: Bejide gets SDP nomination

National leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have praised Nigeria’s former High Commissioner to Canada, Ambassador Dare Bejide, for his sterling qualities and attributes as an astute politician.

SDP National Organising Secretary Hon Emeka Atuma, lauded the former envoy for treading the right path by joining the party, which he said was on a rescue mission in the country.

The national official, flanked by the party’s National Secretary Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, spoke in Abuja on Friday after Bejide obtained his Ekiti governorship nomination form, wished him well in his bid to contest for the ticket of the party.

Bejide, an erstwhile Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant, defected to the SDP, which he described as a veritable platform to put Ekiti State back on the path of development and prosperity owing to the effect of bad governance in the last few years.

The former envoy who lauded the leadership and members of SDP, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to win the July 14 Ekiti governorship election and put in place good governance and people-oriented projects, programmes and policies.

He said: “This is a party which believes in internal democracy. I believe in the ability of the party to organise and conduct credible primary to pick a popular candidate that can win the election. As things are, SDP is the way to go. The response and drift towards this party are impressive”.

  • Fayose will go to jail after tenure – Fayemi

    • Gov borrowed N56bn in four years

Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, yesterday vowed to jail Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, if reelected.

He spoke during the declaration of intent to contest for Ekiti State governorship seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fayose, he stated, will be made to account for the gross mismanagement of the state’s resources and allocation in the last four years.

Fayemi, who was governor between October 2010 and October 2014, shocked the crowd by bringing out a red card from his pocket which he symbolically showed to Fayose and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the red card is an answer to the White Paper issued against him by the Fayose regime which indicted him of financial impropriety and banned him from holding public office for ten years.

Traffic was grounded for about four hours in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, where a massive crow turned out to hear Fayemi speak on his readiness to win Ekiti for APC in the July 14 governorship poll.

Fayemi said the state has retrogressed sharply in the last four years he left office saying his bid to run again was motivated by the need to “rescue Ekiti people from bad governance, want, hunger and poverty.”

He lamented the suffering of teachers, state civil servants, local government workers, and pensioners who are being owed backlog of arrears of salaries, allowances and benefits.

According to him, Fayose owes core civil servants six months, local government workers ten months, community health workers ten months; pensioners, ten months; teachers, ten months and students, bursaries of over three years.

Fayemi said Governor Ayo Fayose has no excuse not to pay workers’ salaries and pensioners benefits having collected two tranches of bailout funds, two tranches of Paris Club refund cash and Budget Support Funds for thirteen months.

He also disclosed that latest records from the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed Fayose has borrowed N56 billion since coming to power in October 2014 with nothing appreciable to show for it.

Fayemi vowed that Fayose would be brought to justice at the end of his tenure on how he has managed all the funds received from the federal government on behalf of the state.

The former governor was joined by his wife, Bisi; former deputy governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu; Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Dr. Eniola Ajayi and other officials who served in his administration to the APC secretariat where he officially informed party leaders of his intent to run.

After declaring at the secretariat, Fayemi and his train moved to the nearby Jonathan African Church Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti where he addressed another crowd waiting for him on his agenda for the state.

He said all APC members who had joined the governorship race are eminently qualified to occupy the state’s number one seat saying anyone who emerges as the flag bearer would be supported by all.

The minister declared that everything humanly, constitutionally and legally possible would be done to win Ekiti State for APC at the next governorship election.

Fayemi said: “When I come before you, it is with profound need for the unfinished business, we need to complete what we started, reclaim our land and restore our land.

“Anywhere Ekiti people go, people subject us to questions that what is wrong with you Ekiti people?

“We thought you are educated, we thought you are exposed, how do you come up with a character like this as governor?

“It is time to put a stop to that; it is not about title, it is about sacrifice and whatever it will take us to free Ekiti from these criminal and rapacious brigands, we will do it.

“We are here to inform Ekiti people that we will never abandon them. We will never hesitate to leave the comfort of Abuja. It is high time to come home and help our vulnerable people.”

He added: “We will do everything that is required to win Ekiti back. They will accuse us of using federal might.

“Although power belongs to God and he gives it to whoever He wishes, we will use bottom power, middle power. That is why they are jittery.”

He described the White Paper of the Fayose administration which

indicted him of financial impropriety and recommended him for a ten-year ban from holding public office as an “ordinary tissue paper.”

The minister said: “Every time I move around, I see the suffering and penury our people are going through. I saw their pain and pangs of not knowing where the next meal will come from.

“That is why we must tell the man who is shouting around that he has a White Paper, we have a red card for him and his party. We will ensure that he will end up in jail.”

Fayemi described Fayose as a “pathological liar” for claiming that the debt he (Fayemi) left behind was responsible for his (Fayose’s)

inability to pay workers’ salaries and pensioners benefits as and when due.

The ex-governor explained that he took a N25 billion bond from the Capital Market in December 2011 with which he executed capital projects adding that he had repaid N14.5 billion at the time he left office in October 2014.

Dismissing the opposition’s claim that he hates workers and teachers, Fayemi stressed that workers enjoyed most during his administration when they enjoyed salary increase three times.

Apart from this, he said workers were sponsored to local and overseas seminars, teachers got Core Subjects Allowance, Rural Teachers Allowance and no worker was sacked.

To party members, Fayemi said: “Whoever wins the primary, we will all support him. Don’t run down any aspirant. Let us desist from hate speech because all aspirants are promoting our party.

“Party members should not use abusive and intemperate language and I want to suggest to our party leaders to come out with a code of conduct to check this.

“If we don’t do that, we run the risk of damaging our brand (APC). You are free to market your aspirant and leave the judgment to our delegates.

“They (delegates) want our party back in power and we must respect their judgment. Any aspirant who does not respect the rule, I will take him as an agent who does not want the good of our party.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi declares tomorrow

    •Writes APC leaders, monarchs

Ex-Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has notified the national and state leadership of All Progressives Party (APC), elders of the party, prominent citizens and monarchs of his intention to run for the July 14 governorship election.

Dr. Fayemi, the minister of Mines and Steel Development, in a letter he signed, said his public declaration for the poll would come up at a rally in Ado-Ekiti tomorrow.

He addressed the letter to the National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, traditional rulers in Ekiti State, his colleagues in the Federal Executive Council (FEC), former and serving governors elected on APC platform, as well as prominent sons and daughters of Ekiti.

Fayemi, on April 2, hinted of his plan to run for the primaries at the quarterly meeting of Ekiti APC leaders at his Isan Ekiti country home.

Ahead of tomorrow’s declaration, the minister had undertaken a tour of the 16 local governments where he met council and ward executives, as well as party elders.

The tour, which kicked off on Monday in Efon Local Government, ended in Oye Council yesterday.

Fayemi said in the letter that his decision to contest the primary election was informed by the need to join other patriots to rescue the state from the grips of insensitive and incompetent PDP administration, which had plunged the state and its people into misery and poverty.

Said he: “My mission in public life, which has always centred on transforming the material conditions of our people, has always revolved round these three imperatives – breaking the yoke of ignorance that keeps our people down; liberating them from ill-health and other limitations that restrain them from achieving their potentials; and breaking the stranglehold of poverty, which keeps people from living full creative lives.

“In practical and policy terms, this for me has always meant prioritising social investments in education, health care and other social interventions that reduce the cost of living, while raising the quality of life.

“Public office is too serious to be left to charlatans. When men and women of good conscience, committed to the ideals of social justice and the common good, turn away from politics, we pave the way for unprincipled opportunists to take power.

“My convictions about how much more is possible in Ekiti stem not from any sense of entitlement, but from a sense of service, of obligation and from my belief that posterity has positioned us for such a time as this.

“There is much we have to repair and redress in Ekiti before we can go forward.”

The minister’s central message at the meetings dwelled on the need for APC members to unite, in order to defeat PDP on July 14.

  • Ekiti 2018: Britain warns politicians against violence

Britain has urged politicians in Ekiti State to play the game according to the rules, as the July 14 governorship election approaches.

Its Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Miss Laure Beaufils, spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti when she visited the first private radio station in the state, Voice 89.9 FM.

Hosted by the General Manager, Mr. Donald Falayi, Beaufils said Britain was watching developments in Ekiti ahead of the July poll.

She advised politicians and their supporters to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner, before, during and after the election.

The envoy said her country expected the conduct of open and transparent primaries, which would lead to a credible election.

She enjoined politicians to dwell on issues and manifestos, rather than attacking personalities.

The diplomat said: “I believe the primaries should be open, although it will definitely be a tense period. People all over the country are looking forward to the election.

“Politicians should dwell on issues, policies and manifestos, rather than on personalities. The coming Ekiti election is a signal to the February 2019 general election.”

She described Nigeria as a wonderful country, whose citizens are creative and dynamic.

Beaufils said the country is not as bad as being portrayed across the globe, but advised that efforts should be made to change the perception.

She said there are positive stories to tell about Nigeria, rather than corruption and Boko Haram insurgency, which attract local and foreign media.

Falayi said the station had maintained neutrality in the reportage of events in the state, in line with broadcasting code.

He said the station would give massive coverage to the Ekiti elections in the 16 local governments, adding that Outside Broadcasting (OB) vans would be deployed in polling stations.

  • EKITI 2018: SDP adopts Fayose’s former deputy as consensus candidate

Former Ekiti State Deputy Governor,  Chief Adebisi Omoyeni, has been adopted as the consensus candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the July 14 governorship poll.

Omoyeni, was the deputy governor to Governor Ayo Fayose in his first term, where he served only for three months before resigning to  assume the position of Group Managing Director of Wema Bank Plc.

He was formerly in the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) before moving to SDP, with his supporters citing cases of alleged manipulation of delegates’ list in favour of Fayose’s deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Speaking on behalf of the party leaders in Ado Ekiti on Friday, the pioneer chairman of SDP in the state, Engr. Ayo Adekola, said they decided to pick him based on his antecedents and for the fact that he was from the south senatorial district.

Adekola, who was the SDP governorship candidate in 2014, added that it had always been the wish of the founding fathers of the party in the state that the south produced the governor even before now.

He said they decided to make Omoyeni the governorship candidate because he has the capacity to implement the policies and programmes of the party, adding that “this will also make the April 14 primary a rancour-free process”.

He added: “In 2014, Dr Kola Adeyina from Ikere Ekiti, where Omoyeni  hails from was our candidate. But he fell sick and was taken overseas   and he used my name as a stop gap. Few days to election, he called me and said I should be made the candidate.”

  • Ekiti 2018: INEC issues election notice

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday issued a Notice of Election for the July 14 poll in Ekiti State.

The issuance signalled beginning of activities toward the conduct of the election.

However, the ban on campaigns will be lifted on April 14.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Prof. AbdulGaniy Olayinka Raji, who addressed a briefing at INEC’s office in Ado-Ekiti, said the notice was issued 90 days to the election.

He said the electoral umpire would conduct a credible, transparent, free and fair election.

Raji explained that in accordance with Section 30 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, INEC must give a notice of 90 days.

He said campaigns would begin from April 15 and end midnight of July 12.

Raji added that parties will, on June 30, submit names of their agents.

According to him, any party that fails to meet up with the date will not have no agent.

The INEC chief said after July 12, parties would not be allowed to go on air to campaign or run adverts and jingles for their candidates.

He said: “Any party that fails to submit names of its agents by June 30 will not be allowed to field agents at the election.

“After July 12, no jingles or adverts of candidates and parties will be entertained. It is the job of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and security agencies to enforce the law.”

Raji said as part of efforts to ensure more people registered for the election, 531 centres had been created.

He said the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in the new centres would begin between April 11 and 16 in 177 registration areas.

According to him, the exercise became necessary, to move it closer to the people and enhance participation in the election.

Raji said: “In line with Section 30 (1) of the Electoral Act 2013 as amended, it provides that not later than 90 days to the election, INEC must give the notice of election and by the constitution, today marks the day we should give the notice of election.

“As the Resident Electoral Commissioner, and on behalf of the leadership of the commission, I give the notice of the governorship election today 90 days to the poll.

“I urge people who are yet to register and have attained 18 years to register, as we are moving the centres to them.

“We want to remove bottlenecks people complain of; from economic to distance and some political reasons. We are bringing registration to their doorsteps.

“We promise the people that a few weeks after the exercise; their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be ready for collection. We expect them to go to our offices for their cards, because no PVC, no election.”

He said 513,000 PVCs have been distributed, adding that 218,000 cards are yet to be collected by those who registered before April 2017.

Raji advised stakeholders to cooperate with INEC to ensure a successful poll.

    ‘218,000 PVCs uncollected in Ekiti’

INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC) said yesterday that 218,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were yet to be collected in Ekiti Stte.

It has issued a “Notice of Election”, informing that the governorship election will hold on July 14.

INEC said this was in line with the 1999 Constitution and Electoral Law.

Spokesman Taiwo Gbadegesin, at a public enlightenment forum in Ado-Ekiti, said 500,000 PVCs had been collected.

He advised those yet to pick their PVCs to do so, saying they would be disenfranchised without PVCs.

Gbadegesin said PVCs for those who registered between April 2017 to date were yet to be delivered from Abuja.

The spokesman said the cards would be distributed as soon as they were delivered to the Ekiti State office of INEC.

He said university students and corps members, who had completed their service, might be those who had not collected their PVCs.

Gbadegesin said the commission also suspected others who did double registration.

“They may be afraid that they can be arrested if they show up,” he said.

Gbadegesin said the commission would sensitise voters ahead of the election.

He advised parties to sensitise their followers and members on the need to collect their PVCs.

  • Ekiti 2018 governorship: APC prepares for primary

As part of the party’s bid to snatch power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has flagged off a fresh membership mobilisation drive in Ekiti State. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA, who covered the chairman’s first official visit to the Land of Honour, reports.

The campaign for the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State is gathering momentum within the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the visit of its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to the state recently.

Beyond the frenzy and razzmatazz that characterised the visit lies a steely resolve and determination to bring Ekiti back into the mainstream politics and the fold of the progressives. Although he was in the state to kick-start the registration of new members, Odigie-Oyegun used the occasion to sound a battle cry that the state, also known as the Fountain of Knowledge, will be annexed by the APC come July 14.

The one-time Edo State governor declared that the governorship poll is a “must-win” for his party; a statement that generated ripples in the political space. The applause that greeted the chairman’s declaration shook the Great Eagle Hall, venue of the stakeholders’ meeting, to its foundation.

Before his arrival, residents of Ado-Ekiti knew that something big was in the offing, as vehicles carrying supporters of governorship aspirants moved towards the secretariat along Ikere Road in Ajilosun. The secretariat was awash with banners, miniatures billboards and posters of the over 30 aspirants gunning for the party’s ticket.

Food vendors, as well as those selling drinks and party souvenirs had a brisk business marketing their wares.

Odigie-Oyegun and the other members of the delegation arrived the venue amidst drumming, trumpeting, singing and dancing. Before then, one lane of the highway had been cordoned off by security men and this created a huge traffic snarl.

The highpoint of the visit to the secretariat was the flagging off of the membership registration drive by APC National Chairman, to send a signal the party’s readiness to win the July 14 election and bring the state back into the fold of the progressives. He was joined by some members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including the National Organising Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso and the National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Pius Akinyelure.

Afterwards, the train moved to Eagle Hall, along Ikere Road, where another crowd of party faithful had gathered. The entry of Odigie-Oyegun and his team, followed by other stakeholders, including the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Governor Adeniyi Adebayo, Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Segun Oni and other aspirants into the hall generated excitement in the audience.

Supporters of the various aspirants were chanting the names and slogans of their principals and were determined to outdo one another. Ekiti APC Publicity Secretary Chief Taiwo Olatunbosun had a hectic time trying to calm the audience, to pave the way for the the stakeholders’ meeting to officially commence.

It took the intervention of the State Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, to restore order and allow the National Chairman to address the audience. Two leaders of the party in Ekiti, former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Ronke Okusanya and former chairman of Ado Local Government, Chief David Adigun, were the only ones given the opportunity to welcome the guests, particularly Odigie-Oyegun.

Okusanya told Oyegun: “You have seen the enthusiasm of our people; you have seen the interest of our people in the forthcoming election. We appeal to you that trust is very important in the conduct of the primary scheduled for May 5, 2018. We want to see the party united, so that we can move into the election as one body, because we are ready to snatch the government from the impostors.”

Adigun said: “Ekiti is an APC state, but those in power now are ‘highway robbers.’ We want a honest primary, a transparent primary, a straightforward primary.”

Odigie-Oyegun said he was happy with the excitement and enthusiasm among party members in Ekiti, as well as the vibrant and energetic display by some aspirants. He assured all aspirants that a credible, free, fair and transparent primary election will be conducted to choose the party’s flag bearer.

He stressed that the Muhammadu Buhari administration would not compromise the integrity of the ballot box, despite the party’s quest to regain the governorship seat in Ekiti. The party leader promised that the APC will mobilise all available resources to assist members in Ekiti to win the July governorship poll.

Governorship aspirants in attendance include: Chief Segun Oni, Mr. Olufemi Bamisile, Dr. Wole Oluyede, Mr. Kola Alabi, Mr. Victor Kolade, Dr. Bayo Orire, Senator Gbenga Aluko, Captain Sunday Adebomi, Dr. Mojisola Kolade, Chief Diran Adesua, Mr. Bimbo Daramola, Senator Ayo Arise, Dr. Wole Oluleye and Dr. Makanjuola Owolabi.

The National Chairman added: “We did not choose Ekiti to flag off this event (new membership drive) by accident. Ekiti is facing an important election. God has put it in our hands; God has put it on your laps and God has chosen Ekiti to be a major factor in the politics of this country in July 2018.

“We in the National Executive have decided that the coming election is one we will work as hard as possible. No stone will be left unturned; it is a must-win election. As you know, the Muhammadu Buhari administration will not compromise with offering voters a level-playing field.

“The Buhari administration will not compromise on having a free and fair election. It means whether we are in power at the federal level or not, we must all work hard to deserve the victory that belongs to us.”

Odigie-Oyegun also reeled out some guidelines to ensure that aspirants and their supporters conduct themselves with decorum and ensure that the party organizes a transparent primary.

He added: “The aspirants should not campaign as if there is no tomorrow; don’t campaign with enmity, because there should be no discord in the party and anybody that wants to fly the party’s flag must sign an undertaking to maintain decorum.

“We at the national headquarters, having guaranteed a free and fair primary, because there cannot be peace without justice, will guarantee a free and fair primary. We must not have bad losers; all aspirants must collapse their structures into that of the winner of the primary. There must be no division and factionalisation in the party.

“No officer (in the state exco) should join the campaign bandwagon of any aspirant whatever position you hold. The moment you do that, you have factionalised the party.”

Speaking on the fear that the national leadership intends to impose a candidate, Odigie-Oyegun said: “I want to assure that in Ekiti State, we will have free, fair and credible primary. We will provide security at the primary; it will be an open event that will be covered live on television from the beginning to the end.

“There will be proper identification of delegates to prevent impersonation. Once the delegate list is out, every aspirant that pays the prescribed fee will be given the delegates list.

“At the voting point, party chairmen of the local government (chapters) and wards will stand at a distance away but they will ensure that those that will vote are bona fide delegates and anybody found impersonating will be handed over to the Police.

“A formidable group of (APC) governors will be mobilized who will superintend, guide and ensure that the election is totally free and fair. Finally, as far as Ekiti governorship election is concerned, we are going to mobilise the entire country, the entire APC structure to ensure that you (Ekiti APC) are not alone and that all resources you need for the election are made available to you. At the end of July, Ekiti will be in the APC fold.”

Awe promised to abide by the “commandment” issued by Oyegun and organized a credible primary among aspirants.

At the end of the day, Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Kemisola Olaleye, presented gift on behalf of the state APC caucus to mark the National Chairman’s visit to the state.

After the departure of the guests, party members staged a “show of force” round the town causing another round of traffic gridlock.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti PDP Chairman, Chief Gboyega Oguntuase, has declared the state a “no-go area for the APC”. He boasted that the opposition party would not win the election, even “if President Muhammad Buhari is brought down to serve as Returning Officer “.

Oguntuase urged the international community to focus on the Ekiti poll and prevent it from being manipulated by the APC. He also called on civil society organisations (CSO) to monitor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ensure that it conducts a poll that will reflect the true wishes of the Ekiti electorate.

Oguntuase said: “Every single APC member here in Ekiti knows that the party has no chance of winning even one of the 16 local councils. He said: “The only thing they have been saying is that Governor Ayodele Fayose has been giving President Muhammadu Buhari problems and that he (Buhari) has vowed to go to any length to take Ekiti from the governor, so as to serve as a payback for his persistent criticism of the President.

“To us in the PDP, we can begin to draw correlation between the yesterday’s “we must win the Ekiti election by fire by force” comment of Chief Odigie-Oyegun with the way the APC has been boasting of using federal might to take Ekiti.

“However, we are sure that even if President Buhari is brought to Ekiti as the INEC Returning Officer for the election, the APC will still fail.

The international community and CSOs in Nigeria should therefore begin to focus their attention on the election from now and beam their searchlights on INEC and other agencies of the Federal Government that will be involved in the election.

“This is because the election will be an indicator of the readiness and willingness of INEC to conduct free, fair and credible presidential election in 2019.”

    •’We will support female candidates’

Women interest groups in Ekiti State have resolved to reject inducement from politicians to vote for parties and candidates during the July 14 governorship election.

The women made the resolution at a one-day interactive seminar tagged: “Impact of Women in Politics”, organised by a non-government organisation, Mothers and Beyond International, in Ado-Ekiti.

The groups included women caucuses of parties, market women, women political office holders and women professionals.

Adelabu warned women against pulling down female aspirants, saying they should support them to reduce the gender gap in governance.

Oso urged women to vie for elective positions, saying they should stop collecting money, rice, chicken, soap and other items from politicians in exchange for votes.

Sonaya, who shared her experience as a presidential aspirant, lamented underrepresentation of women in governance, saying they should be courageous to contest political offices and make impact.
