  • EKSU to students: no fees, no classes

    Following the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by unions, the management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) has called on all students to return as full academic activities have resumed on campus.

    A statement by the university’s Director, Information and Corporate Affairs,  Ajibade Olubunmi, however added that only those who had paid all fees would be allowed in class.

    The statement reads: “The Vice- Chancellor of the university, Prof Samuel Oye Bandele, stressed that the management has observed that some students are yet to register and pay the necessary dues.  Accordingly, Management has decided that those who have not paid their school fees and other dues will not be allowed to attend lectures or enjoy the University facilities.

    “Parents and guardians are enjoined to advise their wards to comply with the university directive on payment of fees.”

    Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has thanked Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Dele Adesina, for their role at ending the industrial action.  He also thanked members of the Governing Council, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) of the University for their cooperation in ending the strike.

    The Management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) has postponed the Students’ Union (SU) election till further notice.

    In the interim, it has announced a 12 –man caretaker committee to take over from the David Aridiogo-led SU.

    According to a statement signed by the Director, Information and Corporate Affairs, Ajibade Olubunmi, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samuel Oye Bandele, gave the names of the committee members as: Ojo abiodun Colins of the Faculty of Science (Chairman); Olayinka Alice, Faculty of Science (Vice-Chairman I); Abiodun Adebayo, Part-Time Programme (Vice-Chairman II); Omorilewa Tomilola, Social Science (General Secretary); Oguntade Pelumi ,Agricultural Sciences (Financial Secretary 1); and Olabode Imole Ayomide, Law (Financial Secretary 2).

    Others are: Olubiyo  Joy, Education (Public Relations Officer); Olawamuye Emmanuel, Arts (Welfare Director); Sanni Adeyemo, Social Sciences (Treasurer);           Fadugba Joshua, Engineering (Social Director); Akindeko Oluwafemi, Management Sciences (Sports Officer 1); Ogunbiyi Tolulope, College of Medicine (Sports Officer 2).

    Bandele urged the committee members to properly coordinate the students now that lectures have not really started.

    The Vice-Chancellor said elections would hold when the situation allows for it.

    SAN named EKSU governing council chair

    Ekiti State Government has appointed a former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) General Secretary Dele Adesina (SAN) as the Governing Council Chairman of the state University, Ado-Ekiti.

    His appointment, which takes immediate effect, followed the resignation of former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

    In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Modupe Alade, Adeyeye was thanked by government for his contributions to the university and wished him well in his future endeavours.

    “Consequently, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has approved the appointment of Mr Adesina (SAN) as the new chairman of the university governing council. Adesina hails from Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti South West Local Government,” the statement said.

    Adesina has served the NBA in various capacities, such as Chairman, Ikeja Branch, and as the General Secretary.

    He was a former member of the Governing Council of the Covenant University, a private institution belonging to the Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel), where he is a pastor.

    Adesina promised to serve EKSU and Nigeria to the best of his ability.

    “I see this appointment as a call to service for the interest of the people. I am humbled and I can only promise to bring my best to bear on the development of the university,” he said.

    Adesina joins a group of lawyers who have been appointed to contribute to the development of tertiary education in Nigeria.

    The list includes Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) (former Pro Chancellor, University of Lagos), Dr. Wale Babalakin (SAN) 9Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, UNILAG), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) (former Pro Chancellor, University of Ibadan), Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) (Chairman Governing Council, Yaba College of Technology), among others.

     

     

     

  • Pioneer EKSU Law alumni holds reunion

    Pioneer Law students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), have held their reunion/dinner in Ado-Ekiti 20 years after they graduated from their alma mater.

    The law alumni who left the university in 1997, recounted the values they acquired as undergraduates which, they said, prepared them for the various challenges in their profession.

    Some of them including the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ekiti State Ministry of Justice, Mr. Gbemiga Adaramola; former Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, now a Senior Special Assistant on Parliamentary Matter, Taofiq Abdusalam; a former House of Representatives member for Ibadan Southeast/Northeast Federal Constituency, Adedeji Kazeem, and Ekiti State FIDA Chairperson Mrs. Funke Anoma, among others.

    The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Benson Babaleye, urged other sets to emulate them.

    He expressed satisfaction that many of them are making positive contributions to the legal profession and have been projecting the  their alma mater positively.

  • EKSU CMD: involve followers in decision-making

    The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, Dr Kolawole Ogundipe, has said leaders should always carry along their followers in decision-making.

    Dr Ogundipe spoke at the maiden memorial lecture of Dr Olayiwola Olajide, one of the doctors who died last year in an auto crash on their way to the Nigeria Medical Association’s (NMA’s) delegate conference in Sokoto.

    The CMS described the deceased as a peaceful and dedicated leader of the Association of Resident Doctors at EKSUTH.

    He noted that lack of good leadership had been a major problem in all facets of life.

    Dr Ogundipe advised leaders to be conscious of the positions they hold and make the best use of their tenure.

    The CMD said one could get to a position of leadership through an election, selection, appointment and promotion, adding that one should always prepare for a leadership role.

    On leadership in the clinical setting, the CMD urged doctors, nurses and other health workers to see themselves as a single entity working for the same goal.

    He called for motivation in the work place, saying organisations should also appreciate and celebrate hardworking health officers in their establishments.

    Dr Ogundipe said the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) should make a case for a special salary for the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) in teaching hospitals.

    According to him, the challenges of the position are enormous.

    Dr Ogundipe added that it is imperative to include ‘Clinical Leadership’ as a course in the medical students’ curriculum to prepare them for the task ahead.

    EKSU student declared missing

    The police in Ekiti State have declared a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Miss Adefunke Adewodun, missing.
    Adewodun, a student of Theatre and Media Arts, was last seen on campus and in her residence on April 24.
    Her mother, Mrs. Rosaline Adewodun, said her daughter spent her mid semester holiday with her in Ondo town before leaving for campus on April 23.
    The woman urged security agencies and the public to help her find her daughter.
    She said: “We have reported the matter to the police and we believe they will help us find my daughter.”
    Police spokesman Alberto Adeyemi, who confirmed the development, said the command had begun investigation.

    EKSU produces 37 First Class

    Thirty seven students of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti will graduate with First Class honours at the 22nd convocation on Friday and Saturday.

    The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oye Bandele, said this yesterday at a briefing.

    Giving a breakdown, Bandele said1638 made Second Class Upper and 5,395 Second Class Lower.

    He added that 3012 got Third Class and 124 Pass.

    According to him, 81 students will receive their Ph.D; 169 Masters; 85 Professional Masters and 63 Postgraduate Diplomas.

    Bandele said the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II; Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi and House of Representatives member Oladipupo Adebutu will be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.

    The convocation lecture titled: “Breaking the Jinx: The Cyclical Nature of Nigeria’s Problems” will be delivered by former Pro Chancellor/Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan and eminent lawyer, Wole Olanipekun.

     

  • EKSU alumni give scholarship to students

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Ekiti State University (EKSU), Prof Samuel Oye Bandele has praised the institution’s alumni association for supporting indigent students with scholarship.

    Bandele made the commendation through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Bolanle Ajayi, during an event to present scholarship to 100 students at the Oodua auditorium of the university.

    He thanked members of the association for supporting his vision and counseled the students to be focused on their studies in order to achieve greatness in their future endeavours.

    National President of the association, Prof Matthew Ayeni, said the presentation of the N10,000 each to the 100 students was in line with the association’s objectives of contributing to the development of the university.

    Ayeni, further encouraged the students to develop their talents into productive skills and shun mediocrity. “Develop insatiable desire for excellent work,” he said.

    The Ekiti State Commissioner for Education, Jide Egunjobi, who was the special guest of honour at the occasion, praised the association for supporting the state’s pursuit of excellence in the education sector.

    Egunjobi urged the students to value the group’s kind gesture by avoiding unwholesome attitudes.

    Afterwards, the commissioner inaugurated the security building constructed by the association.

  • EKSU Pro-Chancellor gives scholarship

    A Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ekiti State University (EKSU), Prince Adedayo Adeyeye, has given out scholarship to 40 indigent students who hail from Ise Ekiti in Ise/Orun Local Government Area and are in tertiary institutions.

    Each of the students got N50,000 from the sponsor who instituted the scholarship in memory of his father, the late Arinjale of Ise Ekiti, Oba Adeyeye Agunsoye II (1932-1976).

    Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Works, said the take off of the scheme was to mark the 40th memorial of his father and keep his good deeds alive.

    He said: “This year marks 40 years of the transition of my father. He died when I was in Part One in the university and I was privileged to graduate at the age of 21.

    “We can as well invite King Sunny Ade to mark the 40th anniversary of his demise but the best I can do is to institute this scholarship scheme for 40 students. It is not for this year only; they will continue to enjoy it till they finish their university education.

    “My education was financed by my mother because I was very young when my father died. I want to state that this scholarship was not given on partisan basis because the criterion was obtaining the form and not based on politics, association or family.”

    EKSU student jailed two years for cultism

    An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti yesterday sentenced a man, Adekunle Iyanu, to two years imprisonment for belonging to Black Axe Cult.
    The accused, who was a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, was arrested behind the campus on July 24, 2013 at Ifaki-Ekiti.
    The prosecution counsel, Femi Onipede, tendered exhibits recovered from the accused with his confessional statement.
    Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde held that the prosecution had established the case beyond reasonable doubt.
    She was of the opinion that the menace of cults should be curtailed and culprits punished.
    The defence counsel, Chris Omokhafe, urged the court to be lenient with his client, saying he was a first-time offender.
    Justice Abodunde sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment without any options of fine, saying this would serve as deterrent to others.
    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court has sentenced an Islamic scholar, Rahman Osupa Adini, to three months imprisonment for assault and stealing.
    The cleric was convicted of six-count charge preferred against him by the state.
    The 49-year-old was arraigned on February 22, 2010 at 9:45 am together with his wife, Yemisi, at Olorunsogo, Zone 5, Adebayo Street, Ado-Ekiti.
    The scholar was charged with conspiracy, stealing, wilful damage, assault occasioning harm, giving false information to the police with an intention to cause the police to act against Jibodu Abiodun, who he had assaulted.
    Prosecution counsel Femi Onipede, who called four witnesses, tendered series of evidence to prove his case.
    Defence counsel Rotimi Adabenbe pleaded for mercy after the court had convicted his client.
    Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye discharged Yemisi for lack of evidence and sentenced the accused to three months on each of the six-count charges but to run concurrently without any option of fine.
