    • Yellow Canaries beat Erciyesspor 1-2

SUPER Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike was in cloud nine on Sunday after scoring his first Fenerbahce goal close to two months after completing a 13 million euros move from Russia’s Spartak Moscow.

The Nigerian, who appeared to have taken his goalscoring boots against Ethiopia back to Turkey, made his subsitution count after replacing Emre Belozoglu in the 77th minute to score the winner for the Yellow Canaries who were away to Erciyesspor on match day 8 of the Turkish Super Lig.

In a post match chat, the AFCON 2013 top scorer said: “It was a good week for me. Scoring three goals in two matches was good for me.”

    Emenike shines in Fenerbahçe training

Super Eagles forward, Emmanuel Emenike was in dazzling form as he resumed duties with Turkish side, Fenerbahçe ahead of today’s clash with Kayseri Erciyesspor in a Super Lig cracker at Kadir Has Sehir Stadi (Kayseri).

The session which was held behind closed-doors at Fenerbache Bartu Facility saw the Nigeria international, who scored a brace in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Ethiopia’s Walya Antelopes last weekend, show no sign of fatigue or jet lag as he lasted the entire training schedule of 1 hour and 40 minutes despite returning from international duties.

Interestingly, while Emenike who is looking forward to scoring his first goal for Istanbul giant since arriving from Spartak Moscow lasted the entire training, other internationals like Portugal’s duo of Raul Meireles and Bruno Alves alongside Mehmet Topal enjoyed a separate training program from the rest of the gang.

Meanwhile, Eagles captain Joseph Yobo was also impressive during the exercise that saw the team divided in 3 groups and worked with the 5 balls passing that started with warming movement. The session was completed with full team play that tested the defence organizations with 10 players on both sides.

Fenerbahçe currently top the Süper Lig log with 16 points from 7 matches.

Emenike Celebrates: I’m Eagles’ real deal

    •My goals confirm this status

Emmanuel Emenike could well be the goal machine Nigeria have long waited for as he now averages a goal every game.

Nigeria have long waited for a striker who will take the responsibility of scoring goals for the Eagles since the days of the late Rashidi Yekini.

The likes of Julius Aghahowa, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Obafemi Martins at some point were regarded as the men to take on the Eagles goal-scoring responsibilities, but none of them could match the exploits of the legendary Yekini.

With nine goals from 18 matches for Nigeria, Emenike has emerged as the country’s new king of goals, and if he maintains this scoring rate, he could outdo the 37-goal milestone set by the great Yekini.

He is strong, cool headed in front of goal and has already proved he is a prolific scorer at his various clubs. He is only 26 and if only he stays free of injuries and keeps his current form, he will plunder many more goals for the African champions.

His confidence has been boosted by his exploits at his Africa Cup of Nations debut earlier this year in South Africa, where he emerged as top scorer with four goals to help Nigeria win a third continental diadem.

Incidentally, his Eagles debut against Sierra Leone in February 2011 had gone horribly wrong when he was forced out of the game by an injury midway through the first half. But as he has shown in his various clubs, his resolve to defy his critics have since seen him become the toast of a country of 160 million football fans.

His first Eagles goal was pure class as he lobbed the ball past a stranded Argentina goalkeeper as Nigeria thumped the two-time world champions 4-1 in a friendly in Abuja two years ago.

Emenike began his career with Delta Force in Nigeria before he moved to South Africa, where he featured for Mpumalanga Black Aces and FC Cape Town.

His stocks rose considerably when he joined a modest Turkish club Karabukspor where his goals catapulted them to the top flight. He then netted 14 goals for Karabukspor in the top flight to catch the attention of giants Fenerbahce.

In the summer of 2011, Fenerbahce signed him for £7 million, but didn’t play a single game for the Istanbul giants before he was on the move again amid a match-fixing scandal that rocked the club.

He moved to Russia, where he teamed up with Spartak Moscow for a fee of £9 million and was an instant hit, he scored his first goal in Russia in a 1-1 draw against city rivals CSKA Moscow and went ahead to score a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in another derby.

He scored 21 goals in 42 games, again an average of a-goal-a-game. He has yet to score for Fenerbache since his switch in the summer, but you cannot bet against him to come good yet again.

  • World Cup playoff: It was a team victory – Emenike

World Cup playoff: It was a team victory – Emenike

Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike, has said Sunday’s victory in Ethiopia was achieved by the entire team.

Emenike scored twice for the Eagles to take a 2-1 advantage into November 16 return leg in Calabar.

“We prepared well for this game and we deserved the three points. It was not all about me because this was a collective victory for us. We all worked hard as a team to show the spirit of champions,” Emenike told MTNFootball.com

“It was a tough game, it is one of the toughest games I have played for Eagles so far and I am happy to have conquered the fears.

“I went to Ethiopia with a determination for victory, so the victory was a mission accomplished. We remain humble in victory.

“I must give God the glory and adoration because he made it happen for me and my team.”

The 2013 AFCON top scorer said he expects the return leg to be even tougher.

“The return leg will be tough, we are not there yet, but we are in a comfortable zone. We just need to be focused and wrap it up in the second leg with another victory,” he said.

Italy-based Nnamdi Oduamadi told MTNFootball.com he did not panic even when Ethiopia went ahead.

“It was a tough match no doubt, they came at us to win but we gave our best to curtail them. I never felt we will not win the game, I was very upbeat there was no way the Ethiopians will beat,” he said.

“I was sure of victory. I am happy to be part of the team. World Cup here we come!”

Oduamadi was one of Nigeria’s best performers at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil in June and said he will be glad to return there for the World Cup.

“I was at the Confederations Cup this year, I am glad that I will be going back there for the World Cup, it is a football country,” Oduamadi told MTNFootball.com.

    • Eagles’ striker gets rave reviews

Ex-Nigeria stars Jonathan Akpoborie and Sunday Oliseh have praised Emmanuel Emenike after he inspired Eagles to a 2-1 win in a World Cup playoff in Ethiopia.

However, Eagles assistant coach Daniel Amokachi has warned that there is still 90 minutes between Nigeria and a place at Brazil 2014.

Akpoborie told MTNFootball.com that it was Emenike’s intelligence that won the game for Eagles and that they need to work harder for next month’s return leg clash in Calabar.

“I see it as the individual brilliance of Emenike that took us over this hurdle called Ethiopia,” Akpoborie told MTNFootball.com

“Congrat to the Eagles and Nigerians but they have to work harder ahead of the home tie.”

Former Eagles skipper Oliseh through his twitter handle said Nigerians should savour the victory as he labelled Emenike “5-Star Emenike.”

“Nigerians please stop arguing about the performance, at this stage, all that interest us is qualification. Don’t worry be Happy “5 Star Emenike,” Oliseh tweeted.

Emenike scored a brace in the 67th and 90th minutes to earn Nigeria a big 2 -1 win over hosts Ethiopia.

Amokachi said the team are looking forward to completing the job they started in Ethiopia in Calabar next month.

Amokachi admitted it was a difficult game in Addis Ababa, but the Eagles proved their class.

“It was a difficult match, Addis Ababa is always a difficult place to play with fans all over the place supporting the home team,” he said.

“They gave us scare in the first half, but we survived it. In the second half we showed them the stuff of Africa champions.

“But it is not over, we still have 90 minutes to play before with start the celebrations.”

    FENERBAHCE SQUAD: Emenike angry

    • Says I’m played out of position

Emmanuel Emenike has told MTNFootball.com he has yet to score for Fenerbahce because he is played on the wings and not as a centre forward.

“The fact is that I am being played out of position now, I am playing form the wing and not as the main striker,” Emenike told only MTNFootball.com.

“As a player I am obliged to my coach decisions, and I think playing out of position should not be an excuse because I operated from the wings most cases and it is not what I am used to, so I need to adapt to that. I am sure I will get better playing to instructions. I believe the coach still believes in me. And my passion to score goals for Fenerbahce is as big as ever.”

He added: “I love playing as a main striker and that I am used to, I will keep doing my best and I know in no time the goals will come in multiples because I am working very hard. I will gladly keep to my coach instructions because he knows more than I do.”

The 2013 AFCON top scorer told MTNFootball.com he is not under pressure from his club for goals as he is the one who wishes to start banging in goals.

“It is not true that I am under pressure from my team for goals, nobody in my team has asked me questions on this because they know me too well. I am the one who is eager to score goals as expected by the fans as well as the club, as a matter of fact, I don’t live with pressure because I have never lost the focus to score goals,” he declared.

  • Emenike: I like scoring goals

    Emenike: I like scoring goals

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike has admitted he is desperate to start scoring goals for new club Fenerbahce after a switch from Spartak Moscow.

Emenike is a proven goal scorer and had fired four goals in as many matches for Russian club Spartak before his big-money switch to Fenerbahce in the summer.

“I need a goal. Not having a goal makes me disappointed. I hope that soon I will contribute to the team with some goals,” Emenike told fanatik.com

Fenerbache are second on the Turkish league table with 12 points from five matches, same as leaders Besiktas but have an inferior goals difference.

They reportedly shelled out 13 million Euros for the striker, who was goal King at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

Interestingly, that has not been the case for the big striker with the Super Eagles as he returned to action earlier this month after an injury layoff to score against both Malawi and Burkina Faso.

He may feature for Fenerbahce in Sunday’s away clash at Genclirbirligi after he missed last weekend’s home game against Elazigspor due to a slight knock.

Yobo fined $10,000 for lateness to training

Super Eagles’ skipper, Joseph Yobo, has been slapped a $10,000 fine by Turkish club Fenerbache after he reported late to training.

Yobo, who trained with the rest of the team for the first time on Thursday after being sidelined with knee injury for over three weeks, was reported to have showed up at the team’s training ground late and that did not go down well with the management and so the hefty fine, according to fanatik.com

Otherwise, Yobo, who is wearing a new bearded look, was superb at training, a performance that was applauded even by his team mates.

In the meantime, compatriot and Fenerbache teammate Emmanuel Emenike has been honoured by the Turkey Golf Club.

MTNFootball.com reports that Emenike with that development has entered the history book in Turkey as one of the first set of Fenerbahce players to be hosted by the prestigious Golf Club.

  • Thank you Emenike

    Thank you Emenike

Emmanuel Emenike showed that he is a true professional by insisting on collecting the $5,000 match -winning bonus for beating Malawi in Calabar last Saturday.

Emenike hinged his decision on the fact that it was a privilege to play for Nigeria, with a population of close to 190 million people. He felt honoured to wear our colours and looked forward to subsequent appearances for the country, unlike John Mikel Obi, Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide, who were up in arms to fight for $10,000.

Emenike’s decision quenched the fire in the troika, who were said to have had the coaches’ support. No one would say that Emenike is NFF’s lickspittle, not after his harsh words to the federation’s chiefs for failing to show concern about his welfare when he was injured playing for Nigeria.

Emenike drew a parallel with his club by stating that he was satisfied with what he earned and would rather see playing for Nigeria as payback. This is not the first time that Emenike has shown love for a dear country, irrespective of what we say about NFF chiefs. He dumped playing for South Africa and a few other countries. Indeed, he pestered Joseph Yobo to convince Eagles coaches to invite him to prove his mettle. Little wonder Emenike doesn’t spare any moment to pour encomiums on Yobo.

Interestingly, one former Eagles coach told me that the reason why our players insist on getting such ridiculous figures is because they are bench warmers in their European clubs. One is tempted to believe this coach, given Emenike’s, the late Rashidi Yekini’s and the late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji’s commitment to Nigeria’s matches.

It is absolutely ridiculous that some players could contemplate another bonus row on a day when they shared N25 million given to them by Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke. Do the Eagles think that the money they received was the governor’s personal cash? Do the players not know that the N25 million came from taxpayers?

I really cannot understand why Mikel keeps spearheading revolts in the Eagles. He plays for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and should know how requests for changes are made. What Mikel and his ilk don’t understand is that they would have been languishing in one of these novelty football-playing nations but for the opportunities they got to play for Nigeria. I would have been excited to hear that Mikel, Enyeama and Ejide rejected theirs when the matter was resolved.

That they took the $5,000 tells a lot about their character and it is rather unfortunate since they are our ambassadors in Europe. Wait a minute: Didn’t Mikel get Tom Tom’s Man of the Match award of $5,000? So, what does he really want? Or is playing for Nigeria another casino?

Except for Victor Moses and, indeed, Shola Ameobi, every other person in the Eagles got to Europe playing for one of our national teams. It behoves on them, therefore, to play for Nigeria on grounds of loyalty and show understanding when there is cash crunch.

Sadly, we don’t have the right leadership in the team to call Mikel’s, Enyeama’s and Ejide’s bluff, largely because they also benefit from the increased largesse if their protests succeed. We are the laughing stock anytime issues such as bonuses, are discussed in the media. The big questions are – how do others do theirs without rancour? Is there no instrument in place to punish offenders? Will the trio say they are unaware of what has been said about the bonuses even after the show-of-shame in Namibia?

Could this be the reason why Mikel feigned injury and headed straight to London, when his mates were busy playing for their countries in the European Group World Cup qualifiers?

Mikel needs to exhibit the traits of a role model and desist from this despicable act whether or not he is being propelled by bigger forces in the squad. At this rate, it would be suicidal to make Mikel Eagles’ captain in sync with what is happening in other countries, such as Argentina where Lionel Messi is the captain.

Mikel stands in good stead to become 2012/2013 Africa’s Footballer of the Year and he needs to be worthy in character, based on his stay in Europe where he ought to have acculturised to the European ethos. As for Enyeama, it is about time he stayed off the team. When Samson Siasia wielded the big stick on Enyeama after a mutinous act in the Eagles, we cried foul and begged Siasia in vain. We can now appreciate what Siasia saw then when he tagged Enyeama as a very bad influence. Let me tender my apologies to Siasia for hitting him so hard for refusing to accept pleas from Nigerians to return Enyeama to the fold. I really don’t know where to start in explaining Ejide’s conduct. A good goalkeeper, no doubt, but I didn’t know him to be a disobedient player. His calm mien disarms you. But his recent role of spearheading protests is shocking. Enyeama, Ejide and Mikel are our potential captains. It says something about their protests. Read my lips. Don’t ask me how. Let me urge Maigari and his NFF men not to succumb to any threat on this bonus issue. We cannot pay players match bonuses for all the games, yet they will also insist on having a share of Nigeria’s share of the gate-takings accruing from matches played by the Eagles at the World Cup. It amounts to eating their cake and having it. In other climes, revenues from appearing at the World Cup are ploughed back towards developing the facilities in their countries. But in Nigeria, our players share it. This dastardly act must stop. If the players want the revenue from our World Cup participation, they should forget about match bonuses. Thumbs up Jonathan President Goodluck Jonathan scored the bull’s eye in Abuja on Wednesday, when he decorated Africa’s speedster Blessing Okagbare with a national honour and gave her N3 million. It may be less than what the footballers got but the thought of rewarding her is commendable. Jonathan’s tall order to the sports administrators and athletes to win gold medals at the Brazil 2016 Olympic Games is good, except that the President ought to have told us how much his administration is pumping into the challenge. The President should also tell us when the cash will be released for the athletes because the task of winning any gold medals at the Olympics is a four-year project anchored on proper planning. As I have canvassed in this column in the past, the President needs to direct that a presidential dinner with Okagbare and the business community should be organised for our Olympic Games plans as envisioned by Jonathan be laid bare before these technocrats. Jonathan needs to ask what happened to the sports lottery projects in the past. Another sports lottery with a different organogram is required to lift our sports. The President must be commended for retaining Bolaji Abdullahi as the sports minister. The fillip in our sports owes its course to Abdullahi’s transparent handling of issues bogging the industry. Adbullahi has plugged all the loopholes in our sports with his enduring policies. His unbiased approach to issues that have bedeviled the industry underlines the relative peace in the federations. This has indeed restored confidence in the athletes, knowing that their efforts would be recognised with every feat achieved. Take a bow Abdullahi, for wonderful job. Jonathan should challenge Abdullahi to fix the rot in our sports lottery scheme, if we hope to attain the heights befitting of our athletes’ stature. We should have a deliberate policy to support the athletes and safeguard their future. This must have a presidential backing for the blue-chip companies to identify with. Our administrators must learn how to account for the cash given to them. No company will want to tag its goods or services to any form of scam arising from the misappropriation of cash given to sports federations to organise competitions. Corruption has been the bane of sponsorship of sports. Okagbare as a Nigerian brand with any company will signpost the way forward for sports and the athletes. It could also resolve the problem of securing their future since most of them would be funded by these companies to combine sports and the acquisition of quality education.

  • Emenike wants Yobo in Eagles

    Emenike wants Yobo in Eagles

Emmanuel Emenike has asked that Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo be recalled to the national team because of his experience.

Yobo has not played for the Eagles since the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Emenike, who netted two goals on his return to the team after a long injury lay off, told MTNFootball.com that Yobo’s experience is still very crucial for the Eagles.

Youngster Kenneth Omeruo benched the 95-cap former Everton defender at the AFCON and in the absence of the injured Omeruo, Warri Wolves skipper Azubuike Egwuekwe has been considered ahead of the Eagles skipper, who clocked 33 recently.

“Even though it is the decision of the coach on who he invites to the national team, personally I think we still need Yobo in the team,” Emenike said.

“I play with him every week and sincerely we need his wealth of experience in the Eagles.

“I am in the Eagles doing well today is partly because of the encouragement I get from Yobo and the coach.”

The Fenerbache striker, who described Yobo as “a senior brother,” equally lauded the former Flying Eagles star for scouting him out for the Eagles.

“He brought me to the Super Eagles after we played against each other in a match in Turkey, before Samson Siasia came over to convince me to play for the country,” he added.
