The tribunal, which took place in Enugu, ruled in favor of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Governor Peter Mbah, in the recent governorship election.

In a statement in Abuja, the former federal lawmaker commended the civility of the governor’s opponents in approaching the tribunal, saying that such move would strengthen democracy and cultivate civility amongst political actors.

The Enugu State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the petition of Chris Agu of the Peoples Redemption Party(PRP) against Governor Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party over forged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, non qualification and corruption against the governor.

The tribunal chaired by Justice Kudirat Murayo Akano ruled that the petitioner failed to provide evidence to support their claim that a forged NYSC certificate was submitted to the INEC, adding that the issue is not contained in their affidavit.

Anxiety in Enugu as tribunal delivers judgment on guber poll Thursday

A wave of apprehension has gripped the Enugu metropolis as the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu is set to deliver its judgment on the 2023 governorship election in the state.

The three-member tribunal led by Justice Kudirat Morayo Akano earlier reserved its judgement and according to judiciary sources, had on Tuesday, September 19, announced its judgement date for Thursday, September 21, by 9.00 am.

The announcement has since activated panic mode among the supporters of the two major political parties: the ruling party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), The Nation has learned.

The matter between Chijioke Edeoga of LP and Governor Peter Mbah of PDP has been the most interesting in the history of post-election legal disputes in Enugu State.

Among the contentious issues that have gripped the attention of both legal pundits and the general public in the state is the authenticity of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate presented by Peter Mbah, who was declared the winner of the election by INEC.

The opposition Labour Party had alleged that Mbah failed to fulfil his mandatory youth service obligations before assuming a political post in 2003.

The broader issues surrounding Mbah’s election victory also encompass fierce debates regarding the validity of the votes accrued during the electoral process.

Furthermore, allegations of extensive electoral malpractice and rigging have cast a shadow over the outcome, particularly in Owo and Ugbawka wards in Nkanu East LGA as well as the Enugu East and Udenu LGAs, where the LP candidate is alleging computation errors that reduced his votes.

In the meantime, normal vehicular traffic is still going on around the Independence Layout of the State High Court complex where the judgement will be delivered.

A security source informed our correspondent that security arrangements will be beefed up Thursday morning to check any breakdown of law and order.

Apprehension as Enugu neuropsychiatric hospital workers foil attempt to abduct MD

Workers of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, have foiled a suspected attempt to abduct the Medical Director of the institution, Dr. Monday Igwe.

It was gathered that three stern-looking men had arrived at the facility Thursday afternoon in an unmarked Toyota Sienna bus, and moved straight to the office of the Medical Director.

The development caused panic in the hospital.

Sources at the hospital told our correspondent that the men had wanted to drag Igwe out of his office before words went out.

While workers started milling around the MD’s office, some of them who were already agitated demanded to know the mission of the ‘intruders’.

They were said to have quickly raised the alarm which attracted the attention of other staffers of the establishment.

“By this time, the hospital’s security personnel locked the entrance and exit gates, ensuring that nobody came in or went out of the premises while information was quickly sent to the DPO, New Haven Police Station,” one of the sources said.

It was further gathered that upon the swift arrival of the police, the suspects disclosed that they were police officers from the Zone 13 Command, Ukpo in Anambra State.

They were said to have claimed to have come to arrest the medical director based on a petition against him.

Their explanation did not go down well with the enraged workers who queried the surreptitious manner they wanted to whisk their boss away.

But, the DPO took the men to the state police command headquarters where further investigations were being carried out.

Speaking with newsmen on Friday, a leader of one of the unions in the hospital accused one of the staff of the school of post-basic psychiatric nursing of being behind the petition.

The unionist who wondered why the staff in question had been embroiled in one crisis or another in the hospital in the last 13 years, was reported to have engaged the services of non-existent civil society organisations to destabilise the hospital.

“Those people actually came with sinister motives. It took the intervention of the workers to save the situation before the DPO came with his men. They wanted to literally abduct him, but we resisted their attempt,” he said.

Neither the police nor the institution’s Medical Director would speak on the issue.

Enugu signs electricity bill into law

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on Friday, signed into law, the Enugu State Electricity Bill, describing it as a major step towards economic growth and making the state the premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.

Speaking at the event, which took place at the Government House Enugu, Mbah said the quest by his administration to build Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion would translate to a pipe dream without adequate and stable power supply, hence the need for the Electricity Law, which Bill was transmitted to the House of Assembly about a fortnight ago.

He equally commended the leadership and Members of the House of Assembly for the expeditious passage of the Bill and for their partnership with the government across party lines for the good of Enugu State.

“As you know, following the Constitutional Amendment and the Electricity Act of 2023, electricity is now on the concurrent list. This will now enable us to play in the value chains of the electricity industry.

“So, Enugu State has spared no time in making sure that we create our own electricity market. That is the crux of this law.

“We are now able to play in the generation, transmission, and distribution segments of the electricity market.

“We are also, through our regulatory commission, which this Law has given us the power to create, going to be able to regulate the activities of these players – the generation, transmission, and distribution companies that will flow from it.

“So, this is a significant and very important Law towards the achievement of the Enugu of our dreams because the development and growth of Enugu will all be predicated on the platter that this law has created. You cannot talk about industry or private sector investment if you don’t have electricity or power.

“Enugu, under our administration, is designed and indeed prepared to be the premier destination for investment and this law is part of the enablers.

“Therefore, we thank Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly for the expeditious way they treated this Bill, which has become Law today by this assent”, the governor stated.

The signing was witnessed by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ezenta Ezeani; the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kinsley Udeh; the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, among other state functionaries.

He maintained that the state had an array of investment opportunities such as the sector-based productivity belt, minerals and energy sector, including coal and oil and gas with large deposits in locations in the state.
