Enugu to train 40,000 youths in digital, entrepreneurial skills

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has said his administration would continue to train at least 40,000 youths across the state in digital and entrepreneurial skills that would enable them compete in the global digital and entrepreneurial markets.

He spoke at the weekend while delivering a keynote address at the Tech and Entrepreneurship (TxE) Summit in Enugu where he disclosed that the state government under him had begun the training of youths in digital innovation, programming, digital marketing, financial technology, entrepreneurship, among other requisite technology, financial and business skills.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, “Innovation Unleashed: Transforming Enugu’s Future”, Mbah said the strategic role of his government in enabling better and viable future for the youth operating in the state was to provide an environment full of opportunities for them to thrive.

He said measures were being put in place that would ignite the young ones to unleash the creative energy in them by embracing the emerging future of robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, innovation through skills in information and technology.

The governor, who observed that the global order was rapidly moving away from analogue and anachronistic ways of doing things to a modern perspective enabled by technology, advised the youth to take the opportunity the TeX summit had afforded them to learn new ways of doing things in order to remain relevant and economically self-reliant in a competitive global sphere.

“We are talking about robotics, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, among other emerging skills today. These are perhaps skills that will keep you relevant in today’s world. Ours in Enugu State is to provide you with the right environment, the support and the skills,” he said.

While looking at the synergy between technology and entrepreneurship, the governor enjoined the youth to think creatively and come up with ideas of what to do to add value to the market by repositioning themselves to solve some of the needs of the society.

According to him, the youth could create their own greener pasture in Nigeria without having to travel overseas with the right training and skills, which he said his government would facilitate by partnering tech industries.

“My objective here is to get you to begin to think digitally, to understand that the emerging future is the one that requires you to acquire a digital skill to thrive. And with those digital skills, you do not need to contemplate leaving this country. I know you may think that the pastures are greener in Europe and America, but that is not true. Anybody that told you that has perhaps lied to you. The innovation landscape here is not barren at all.

“With your innovation here, you are able to create a greener pasture right here on our soil than any other place in the world. See this event as a serious business where you have come to acquire a skill; a skill of a lifetime. A skill that will enable you to conquer the world right here in Enugu State,” Mbah said.

The Founder of TxE Africa, Williams Uche-Mbah, had said this year’s event represented the huge potential and promise that Enugu held for youths in the fields of technology and entrepreneurship.

He said the summit was conceived to ignite innovation, foster collaboration and empower the local entrepreneurial community of youths in the state to unleash a new wave of technological innovation, economic growth and a platform for the global market.

Uche-Mbah said youths embracing the right tech skills would escape from the scourge of unemployment and poverty, which was the aim of the summit.

“The objective of this summit is to create a platform to groom our youths in much needed tech and business skills to first decongest the rate of unemployment in Nigeria, and position you for global relevance. Our vision is to reach and empower one million people across Nigeria before 2027, and if you wonder how possible this is, look around you,” he said.

High fares force Enugu residents to trek long distances

Some residents of Enugu have decried the rise in transportation cost within the metropolis, which has resulted in hardship among the people.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the development yesterday, observed that most struggling residents have resorted to trekking many kilometres daily, with its attendant risks.

Some of the commuters said the increase in fares, occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and non-availability palliative measures after five months, have foisted untold hardship on them.

They complained about another recent slight increase in the already unbearable transportation cost in the metropolis.

According to them, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) popularly known as petrol, was increased from its official price of N650 per litre to N665 and N670 in most filling stations in Enugu metropolis.

They said in the Nsukka and Oji River axis of the state, the price of petrol is between N670 and N680 per litre.

Mr Obinna Ezinwa, a transporter plying Gariki–Holy Ghost axis of Enugu, said his colleagues felt the pains of the people, but they could do nothing about the situation.

“The high fare we charge is a reflection of the high cost of petrol we buy to run our vehicles and the daily levy by the government which has been increased to N400 per day.

“We have also noticed that many people have resorted to trekking and we see them sweating profusely in the hot sun just because they cannot afford to pay for fares.

“There is nothing we can do on this because of the prevailing high cost of fuel,’’ he said

Mr. Jude Okoli, a tricycle operator, said they no longer charge N50 from commuters, notwithstanding a very short distance.

Okoli said the least fare commercial tricycles take from a passenger is N100 because the cost of transportation has increased by over 100 per cent.

“It is sad to see many pupils, whose schools are far from their homes, trekking for about four to six kilometres in the morning and making the reversal trip in the hot afternoon after school.

“It is obvious that people are passing through difficult times while the state government has not shown any concern or roll out measures to mitigate the effects,” he said.

A resident of Enugu, Mr Okechukwu Obineri, decried the lack of plans by the government to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal, five months after the decision was taken.

“You cannot imagine that Enugu State has increased the daily levy being paid by transporters and traders even when they clearly understood the pain most people are passing through in the state due to fuel subsidy removal.

“The state is adding burdens to already  impoverished residents of the state in the name of increasing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“I want to advise that the state should focus more on how to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI),’’ he said.

A civil servant, Mr Cosmos Chukwuani, urged the state government to provide transport palliative for workers because, Enugu State civil servants are the least paid throughout the country.

“Some states have reduced the number of days that civil servants come to work to cushion transportation burden; while some have provided long-buses shuttle at subsidized rate for their civil servants.

“To date, there is no scheme implemented by the state government,’’ he said.

Chukwuani said they are yet to feel the effect of the palliative approved by the Federal Government to all the states.

  • Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway bridge ready in 10 days

Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway bridge ready in 10 days

The reconstruction of the collapsed Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway will be completed in 10 days’ time.

This was disclosed to the journalists by the Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah.

According to Mbah, the reconstruction began with palliative work on one lane of the bridge still standing to ensure it was ready for use within the next 10 days.

Mbah disclosed this when he and Works Minister David Umahi paid a pre-reconstruction visit to the site on Thursday.

“I thank Mr. President and the minister of works for the interest and the speed at which they have attended to this challenge that is before us.

“As we know, the minister was here to inspect and to identify areas of quick intervention the last time we came here, and I am happy now to announce that the minister has come to inform us again that work is going to start here on Friday.”

Mbah added, “There is going to be the repair of the existing lane, and hopefully, within the next 10 days, our people should be able to use one of the lanes. Effectively around the middle of next month, the full work on the bridges on both lanes will start.”

The Works Minister promised that “This week, we are going to do palliative work on the bridge.”

The minister revealed that President Bola Tinubu released money for the palliative work in the 2023 Supplementary Budget. I know the governor is very eager to build the federal Enugu-Abakaliki Road. He has concluded the design and work will start in earnest. While he is doing that, we will be doing the flyover at the depot (Eke Emene) to complement it. Therefore, it is a partnership, and it is a healthy one,” Umahi explained.

Last month, the Senate urged the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately begin the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge at the Enugu end of Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway.

The Senate’s directive was sequel to the adoption of a motion at plenary on Wednesday.

The motion, treated under ‘urgent matter of public importance’, was sponsored by Sen. Osita Ngwu (PDP-Enugu) and co-sponsored by Sen. Victor Umeh (LP- Anambra), Sen.Kelvin Chukwu (LP-Enugu) and Sen.Okechukwu Ezea (LP- Enugu).

Ngwu, who in his lead debate, recalled the September 25 tragic collapse of part of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway flyover, however, noted that there was no human casualty.

According to him, the bridge which serves as a major link between the Enugu- Port Harcourt expressway for commuters from Port Harcourt, Aba, Umuahia, and Abakaliki, also provides access to vehicular movement from Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

Suspected herdsmen attack Enugu school bus, kill student, injure others

Bandits suspected to be herdsmen have attacked a coaster school bus belonging to a Catholic school, St Paul’s College, Eke, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing a female student.

The bandits, suspected to be perpetrators of kidnapping activities in the area, also left several other students with severe bullet wounds.

The Nation learned that many of the victims with bullet wounds are currently battling for survival in an undisclosed hospital.

It was further gathered that the gunmen had shot at the school bus in an attempt to stop the vehicle and abduct the students.

But the driver braved it without stopping.

The kidnappers however abducted a traditional ruler from nearby Affa along Eke-Egede-Affa Road while he was returning from a security meeting with chairman of Udi Local Government.

A viral video sighted by our correspondent displayed the lifeless body of the victim, as well as some of the survivors of the attack.

A voice in the video narrated thus: “ Herdsmen attacked our students, they were going home after school; one of them was shot dead; four students were shot, one died instantly; they have done enough.

“See the corpse of the little student they have murdered; this one is unconscious, (pointing at another victim) we are praying that God will sustain her; she sustained four bullet wounds.

“This was done by the Fulanis operating at Eke-Egede Road; these are the ones that survived; the government should come to our rescue. Our place is now a death zone.”

The Principal of the school, Rev. Fr. Frank in a phone interview with newsmen, confirmed the attack.

“It is true; we dismissed by 3:30 pm yesterday, as the students were going home, the bus they were in was attacked by gunmen; some of them received bullet wounds, of which one later died in the hospital.

“That was between 4:30-5 pm; the gunmen just opened fire on them.

“We feel so saddened to lose such a promising young girl in this circumstance.”

Other community sources told our correspondent that the area had been a den of kidnappers for years with security agencies unable to stop the activities of the ravaging herdsmen.

A community leader, who spoke under anonymity, said many victims of kidnap in Udi and Ezeagu areas are kept within the same location until ransom is paid.

He said those who could not meet up with the ransom demand were usually killed after a few days.

He said the forest spanning about 15 kilometres, called ‘Ofia-Akwu’, had remained a death zone, with several lives lost in the past in the hands of the herdsmen who were into kidnapping.

“The security agencies know that they have been occupying that location for several years now, committing all manner of crimes.

“We don’t know why it is difficult to flush them out from that location.

“Many lives have been lost to their murderous activities on that Eke-Egede Road,” he lamented.

Similarly, a famous traditional ruler was also reportedly abducted by the same gang after the attack on the school bus.

A message said the monarch from Affa “was kidnapped along Eke-Egede-Affa Road after a security meeting with chairman of Udi Local Government and men of our high profile neighbourhood watch.

“We pray for his safe rescue and return in Jesus name. Oh! God, our efforts shall not be in vain,” said Offorkansi Hyginus, PRO, Affa security committee.

Meanwhile, attempts to obtain a reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, but he requested that a text message be sent to him.

He was yet to respond to the message as of the time of filing this report.

Enugu launches clampdown on illegal orphanages, brothels

Enugu State Government has begun clampdown on unapproved orphanage homes and brothels used as conduits for human trafficking.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, made this known during an advocacy meeting he held with the agency in Enugu.

He said the state would work with security and law enforcement agencies to stamp out human trafficking.

Udeh urged NAPTIP to strengthen the State Task Force Against Human Trafficking.

He said the Mbah administration would not tolerate trading in human persons or human organs in any form; warning that anyone caught would be punished.

Zonal Commander, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Sam Offiah, promised to expose and prosecute the owners of such facilities.

He reiterated his commitment to prosecute and facilitate the prosecution of human traffickers, in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s mission of making Enugu the preferred destination for investment, business, tourism and living.

The NAPTIP zonal commander told the Attorney-General that the agency had a shelter, where victims taken from abusive homes and brothels were kept until they were integrated into the society.

According to Offiah, sheltering victims of human trafficking was part of the agency’s mandate.

He appealed to the commissioner to assist the agency in securing decent accommodation, as they are staying in a rented apartment that is not conducive and insufficient for its operations.

Offiah enumerated other challenges affecting the smooth operations of the agency in the state to include: lack of logistics (such as vehicles) and operational resources for the running of the agency.

Enugu begins fight to prevent cervical cancer

Enugu State Government has rolled out efforts to prevent cervical cancer among women with the launch

of Human Pappilloma Virus (HPV) routine vaccination against the disease.

Speaking at an event held in Enugu, Governor Peter Mbah said the vaccine was free and available to young girls between nine and 14 years at health care centres across the state.

Mbah, represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai, promised to deal with individuals or groups found dissuading residents from accepting and receiving the vaccination.

He said the state must take advantage of the vaccine in fighting cervical cancer.

“I urge our women in the churches and other places of worship, in homes and schools, to embrace the vaccine. I implore you to dismiss the false claims against the vaccine because it has been certified by the world health authorities as safe,” the governor said.

He noted that health care professionals were facing the challenge of the spread of false information in their efforts to deliver the vaccine to those that needed it.

Mbah called for collaboration of health care authorities and professionals with women organisations in places of worship, to re-educate the people that the vaccine was safe.

“We need to explain to them the investment the state government has continued to make in preventing diseases that are preventable,” he said.

He expressed dismay against those who, though not trained health professionals, used the social and mainstream media to spread false information to the public, warning that the government would go after them in line with the laws.

The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, who lamented the rising scourge of cervical cancer among women, said investing in prevention was not only the right thing, but the smart thing to do.

Ani-Osheku said Enugu was joining 15 other states for the first phase of the roll-out of the vaccination programme, adding that it would run simultaneously in all the 17 local governments and would be administered at primary health care centres, schools, centres of worship and communities.

Health Commissioner Prof. Emmanuel Obi hailed the action of the vaccination programme, saying prevention would save young girls from suffering cervical cancer in future.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the representatives of National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and a non-governmental organisation, FHI360, who declared the vaccine safe for the prevention of cervical cancer.
