Okobaba traders cry out to Lagos over eviction notice

    • By Sherifdeen Amusa

Traders in Okobaba Market, Ebute Metta, Lagos, under different associations have appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu to come to their aid as their livelihood is being threatened due to the planned relocation of their market to Agbowa-Ikosi.

The associations include the Mainland Timber and Sawyer’s Association; Ifesowapo Timber Contractor Association; Ijaw National Timber Contractors; Marine Towing Vessel Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Timber Pullers Association.

Speaking on behalf of the associations, Alhaji Taiwo Quadri, appealed to the Lagos State Government to fulfill the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the traders to maintain their businesses at the new location.

The MoU, he said, includes the construction of the new market to cater to the associations, and the construction of hospitals, banks, and police stations amongst others.

Alhaji Quadri said: “When they invited us to a meeting in Alausa, they asked what we wanted and we told them to build a modern sawmill for us which they promised to do.

“The various associations requested a shed that would save their investments. We also asked that they construct a hospital to cater for industrial hazards like electrocution and hand injuries which are common with our work. The importance of a bank and police station is to safeguard our investments. There’s no way we could survive without these two facilities due to the remote location of the proposed market.

“Our market is worth billions of Naira. We need at least a bank around us for the safety of our money because, at times, our customers pay with cash running into millions of Naira.”

Bemoaning the inability of the state government to fulfill the agreement, Alhaji Quadri said the traders have been given a compulsory deadline of month end to move to the new location or be evicted.

  • BBNaija ‘Pepper Dem’: All housemates up for eviction

The BBNaija ‘Pepper Dem’ housemates once again took part in another round of nominations on Monday night.

As with each nomination process, the housemates get to put up two of their fellow housemates up for possible eviction. With last Sunday’s eviction hammer still fresh in their memories, the housemates have come to understand the rules of the game. They each took turns in the diary room to make their nominations as usual, but it turned out that ‘Biggie’ had other plans.

In what could have been Jeff and Thelma topping the list with six and five nomination nods respectively, Biggie in yet another twist announces that all 16 housemates have been nominated and hence up for possible eviction next week Sunday. The reason for this decision as Biggie later revealed was their punishment for disobeying house rules which he said included: refusal to attend morning workout sessions, whispering and speaking inaudibly amongst other infringements.

Khafi unluckily does not have the option to replace or save herself as her Veto Power, which she won during the Veto Power Holder Game of Chance on Sunday night, was made redundant. She will now join the rest of the nominees who are up for possible eviction on Sunday, July 28.

Adding flavor to the show, Basketmouth, Bovi have been selected as the hosts of exclusive Big Brother Naija recap show, as video streaming service, Showmax, launches in Nigeria.

The launch brings two important firsts – the first time a wide range of popular Nigerian series can be binged from the beginning, and a partnership with Big Brother Naija featuring live streaming of the Sunday night evictions as well as two new BBNaija shows that are exclusive to Showmax. One of the new shows will be hosted by comedians, Basketmouth and Bovi, who will provide hilarious commentary on happenings in the Big Brother Naija house.

The video streaming service features a dedicated slate of Nigerian TV shows and movies, international hit series, Hollywood blockbusters, and a Big Brother Naija partnership with live streaming and exclusive new BBNaija shows.

Speaking about the new service, Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of MultiChoice Group’s Connected Video division, said:

“We’re aiming for the sweet spot that other services may have missed. Taking a generic service and tacking on a few Nollywood movies won’t cut it, so we’re coming in with a strong mix of bang up-to-date Nigerian shows, international hits and favourites from across Africa, and now, as something completely new: on-demand and live Big Brother Naija content.”

  • Double Wahala: Controversies trail Sunday eviction results

Several controversies have trailed BBNaija’s Sunday eviction results, as concerns raised from various quarters suggest the results might have been ‘rigged’.

This is the first time the show, which is in its third season, has been accused of tampering with votes for gains and ratings.

Prior to the show, several viewers on Twitter had suggested that they knew what the results were going to be, due to perceived ‘favouritism’ on the part of the organisers.

    A Twitter handle @BBNaija Leaks wrote on Saturday, “So as we promised informing you On This Week Leaked Result;
    1st-Nina
    2nd-Teddy A
    3rd-Cee c
    4th-BamBam

“Which One or Two of the names above would be evicted from the #BBNaija Game.”

Few hours later, the same handle tweeted, “So information just got to us that due to our accurate leaks, Teddy A would be the victim(eviction) of a flipped script tonight ’cause @BBNaija and his crew are trying to save face.”

In response to the trending ‘leaks’, host of the show Ebuka Obi-Uchendu tweeted @Ebuka, “Predictions are not leaks.”

However, on Sunday, the show came under ‘fire’ again when a viewer calculated the votes gotten by each nominated housemates and revealed that they did not add up to hundred per cent.

According to the votes, Nina had 44.00 per cent, CeeC had 24.38 per cent, Teddy A had 16.81 per cent and BamBam gathered 13.37 per cent.

Highlighting the errors, a viewer @ib_Granville tweeted, “See what was wrong with last night’s results
    1) Votes don’t sum up to 100%.
    2) Wrong display, it’s usually in form of a bar chart with their names, not pictures.
    3) That’s not the official portrait for BamBam, a different picture was used.
    @BBNaija ???”

Minutes later, show organisers responded to the queries through their official Instagram handle @bigbronaija, writing: “Dear viewers, an incorrect percentage was published for Nina during this night’s eviction show.

“While we deeply regret this error, we wish to state that the audited and verified percemtage for Nina is 45.44 per cent as opposed to the previously published 44 per cent.

“We thank you for your usual support and understanding,” they said.

Viewers, however, have expressed deep concerns over the authencity of the show results, some fearing that their favorites might be affected.

Despite the apology issued by the show organisers some other viewers have taken to social media to table their disappointments.

@isibor.grace wrote on Instagram, “I hope you won’t make mistake to announce the real winner.”

@joy.oj wrote, “How many other housemates have you done this to? You decided to post this because you were called out for the missing 1.44 per cent. Continue.”

Meanwhile, Nina, CeeC, Tobi, Miracle, Lolu, Anto, Alex, Rico Swavey and Khloe are left to battle for the star prize worth 45 million naira.

  • Our plan, by BBNaija evictees Angel and Ahneeka

Our plan, by BBNaija evictees Angel and Ahneeka

Ïf the guitar was his unique selling point, then one could say that having been stripped of the musical instrument in the previous weeks contributed to his fall. Angel, who appeared to have been glued to his guitar was deprived of it as it was perceived as a distraction to his relationship with other housemates.

And as Ahneeka, his strategic partner leaves the house with him, many believe his ‘unpopularity’  has affected her, as she is seen as the stronger member of the pair in the eye of fans.

Joining Ebuka on stage, Ahneeka said: “I don’t know how I’m feeling… I don’t want to be here so soon, but hey”

Asked why she didn’t give Rico a chance, she said she has been friends with Angel, and that “Rico and I we were forced to be strategic partners.”

For Angel, going forward, he “would want to be more than friends with Ahneeka,”

Ahneeka returns to TV presenting and some modelling while Angel looks forward to shooting a film in May, and also release a song among other plans.

Another notable revelation from this week’s eviction which saw Cee-C and Lolu (CeeLo) and Leo and Ifu (LiFu) continuing in the game was the Pepsi Roc Da Mat Challenge won by latter N2.5million each, an all expense paid trip to London for Pepsi One Fest event and one-year supply of Pepsi and Aquafina water.

Dr Sid returned to the stage, singing ‘Open and Close’.

The show continuew with a nomination session on Monday, and the next and last sets of pairing before the remaining housemates will play as individuals.

    BBNaija: Cee-C survives eviction

Last week recorded the most controversial eviction nominees in the Big Brother Naija (BBN) house, when Tobi used his veto power as Head of House to put up his romantically-linked, albeit ‘troublesome’ partner Cee-C and her pair Lolu for possible eviction in place of the originally-nominated pair Rico and Bambam (BAMCO).

This was just as Alex refused to save Leo, saying, “He needs a haircut” (as those up for eviction are usually made to look good).

It was these shocking revelations that made this week’s eviction the most anticipated, and alas! Cee-C was saved, along Lolu, while Angel and Ahneeka (GELAH) got the boot.

Leo and Ifu Anneda (LIFU) retained their place back in the house. Thus, this week is pregnant of how the game between the perceived betrayed (Alex and Cee-C) by their partners will play out.

The three pairs that got fans voting all week include Cee-C and Lolu (CEELO), Leo and Ifu Anneda (LIFU) and Angel and Ahneeka (GELAH).

Shortly before announcing the results, Ebuka prodded Cee-C who seemed to have put Tobi’s action behind her.

Asked why she finds herself coming back to Tobi despite series of “I’m done with him” remark, she said: “I like Tobi a lot, as a person, yeah. I think he is very interesting. I believe in his potential and everything.”

Dr Sid opened the show singing his hit ‘Surulere’, a song that featured Don Jazzy to the excitement of the studio guests.

Dressed by D29 Concept, show host Ebuka Uchendu Obi revealed that next week eviction will end the pairing technique.

Las week, The Nation predicted three reasons why Cee-C may not be evicted this week, saying: “…one of her staying power may come from votes from fans of Lolu, her partner who stands to be evicted with her. The other probability is that having been put up by Tobi, her tears that night, especially as she tried to explain her good intentions might have melted some hearts that will most likely join her fans, friends and family members to vote aggressively to keep her in the house. Also, if one considers the drama that has ensued from her relapsing relationship with Tobi, fans of the show would want the entertainment to continue, whether or not they like her personality.”

    BBNaija: Cee-C up for Eviction

Current Head of House Tobi Bakre has put up former strategic partner, Cee-C for eviction.

In a shocking turn of events of what can be termed hot love turning cold, Tobi shocked everyone with his save and replace on Monday evening by saving Bambam and Rico after putting Cee-C and Lolu up for eviction.

Tobi’s decision to save Bamco (Bambam and Rico), has kindled the wrath of Cee-C who used to be Tobi’s lover and strategic partner.

On why he put up Cee-C for eviction, Tobi told Alex that Cee-C is not being real with him, adding that she has been playing games with him

Meanwhile, reacting to the shocking decision taken by her estranged lover [Tobi], Cee-c lamented there is nothing that could be seen as real in the Big Brother House.

Cee-c in a conversation with Anneka, said Tobi is not nice and described him as just being defensive. Putting up an I-don’t-care attitude she urged her fans at home to keep her in the competition by voting her in.

Cee-c was shown conversing with Leo still on the Tobi-issue. Leo, who is also obviously disturbed by the Miracle/Tobi alliance was seen trying to pitch tent with Cee-c, however Cee-c mentioned to him that the game is more of an individual race than an alliance.

” As far as I am concerned, there is no true alliance or couple in this house, I have not seen any…we are too many for people to be forming this or that,” She said.

“At some point, it is no longer a couple thing but you alone,” She added.

BBNaija: How Khloe, K.Brule were sacked from show

The table turned for immunity-enjoying pair, Khloe and K.Brule who no one thought will leave the Big Brother Naija (BBN) House this week, owing to the former’s post as Head of House which excluded her and her strategic partner, K.Brule from being nominated for possible eviction last week.

However, after incurring three strikes as a pair, both housemates were disqualified from the competition on Sunday, about two hours before the live eviction show.

K.Brule incurred the first strike after injuring his wrist and ankle in the first week, following a rejection of his romantic advance by female housemate Anto, thereby violating a section of the house rule on self-inflicted violence. The last two strikes occurred Saturday night after Khloe was seen in a playback video referring to K.Brule as a ‘bastard’. The third and last strike was incurred by K.Brule who was seen in the same video assaulting another housemate, Dee-One physically.

The expulsion came as a surprise to fans of the show, who were only expecting four housemates to be evicted.

Thus, when the pair of Princess and Bitto (PriTo) and Vandora and Dee-One (VanDee) were evicted during the live show, it made six, the number of housemates eased out in one day.

  • BBNaija: Eviction hits PriTo, VanDee

After 21 days in the Big Brother Naija (BBN 3) House, the first live evictions took place last night with four housemates who had the least number of votes leaving the show.

The first evicted pair in the show, as announced by host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu during the live eviction show in Johannesburg, South Africa, was Princess and Bitto (PriTo).

Also evicted is the pair of Dee-One and Vandora (VanDee) who happened to be the second housemates with the least public votes.

Bitto said he had expected the eviction, adding that the longest he wanted to stay in the House was two weeks, though it turned out he did three weeks.

This was just as Princess too admitted she felt a bit downcast after doing a recap of her journey in the House. On why she kept asking Bitto if he was married, she said she needed to know because it was a strategic partnership. Thus, when Ebuka asked Bitto on the stage if he was truly married, he answered in the negative.

Bitto had been wearing a band which he said belongs to his mother. He said he brought it to the House to help him focus on the game.

When Dee-One and Vandora joined Ebuka on stage, Vandora said they might have been evicted because they were not into a romantic relationship, like others; Dee-One thought his utterances as a comedian might have put him in the bad books of some people. On reports about being married, he said he decided to keep that out of the game. Vandora said she suspected he was married due to the way he carried himself in the House.

The live eviction made the number of expelled housemates six, leaving 14 more housemates to continue the competition.

This season, the housemates are playing in pairs; thus, if a housemate gets a reward or punishment, the partner is also at the receiving end.

  • Customs retirees allege eviction from homes

Customs retirees allege eviction from homes

    •It’s  not true, says spokesman

SOME Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) retirees living in Gowon Estate at Ipaja, Lagos, have cried out over plans to eject them.

The retirees told reporters that their verification  by the NCS Zone ‘A Headquarters  was against a court’s ruling.

The verification, they claimed, was a prelude to their forcible ejection.

But the NCS said the verification  was to ascertain the state of the property.

The retirees occupy 12 blocks of 192 flats and 10 bungalows  at 511 Road and 52 Road, A close, which were allocated to them 23 years ago.

Their spokesman, Augustine Nodu Umeadi, said: “We were allocated these flats and houses when we were in service and have been living there for 23 years”.

They alleged that they were being treated differently from the staff of  the army, police, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, News Agency of Nigeria, Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and others who were also allocated quarters in the  estate. They said  those ones had  since benefited from the sale of the apartments.

“Even the two blocks of 32 flats meant for customs officers in FESTAC Town have been sold to them. So why the segregation or why is our own case different?” they queried, adding :

“After all FHA Gowon Estate is not customs barracks. We are retired and old and we don’t know why we should be suffering after serving our fatherland. Our monthly pension is not enough for us to feed ourselves and members of our families not to talk of paying house rent or building houses’’.

They urged the government, through the FHA, to stop NCS from ejecting them  and also complete the process of selling their flats to them since they have expressed interest in the property and also paid the requisite N10,000 fee.

NCS Public Relations Officer Joseph Atah said the verification was to find out if those occupying the property were still qualified to remain there or not  because the property is for customs officers.

“The blocks of flats were given to customs and the flats were given to the occupants as customs officers and it is on that basis that they are staying there,” he said.
