Police shoot three as residents lynch suspected Badoo in Ikorodu

Crisis broke out at the Aga area of Ikorodu after stray bullet from policemen allegedly hit three people.

The incident occurred Monday morning at Oni-Ogunsanya Street, near the community mosque.

Police were said to have fired shots to disperse a crowd that gathered to lynch a suspected member of murderous gang, Badoo.

The suspect, identified as Vincent Onama was caught around 2a.m by members of the local vigilante group, Onyabo, while allegedly trying to dispossess/kill a motorcyclist.

It was gathered that the vigilante members after interrogating Onama, locked him inside a room till dawn for proper identification.

But when they went to the room he was kept, the suspect had allegedly applied black oil on his body and was attempting to escape through the window, tactics usually used by the Badoo gang.

At that point, the vigilantes were said to have been convinced he was a Badoo member and notified residents of the community, who trooped to the location to see the suspect.

It was gathered that Onama had lived in the neighborhood but relocated to Ajah, from where he came to the area and was caught at the wee hour.

A resident, Tunde, who spoke with The Nation said the suspect mounted a roadblock to either collect his victim’s motorcycle or kill him.

He said: “It was the anger the police provoked that led to him being killed. Initially, the people were questioning him. It was when the policemen fired shot and hit three people that the mob brought him out, lynched him and burnt him to death. One person was hit on the head and he was rushed to the hospital. I can’t say if he died or not. Another person was hit on the hand. I don’t know where the bullet touched the fourth victim.”

Ikorodu Ambassadors’ Coordinator, Rasheed Fatuga said: “When he was caught by some members of Onyabo, he was locked in an apartment for further interrogation. To their greatest amazement, the culprit had made an attempt to escape from the room by robbing his body with black oil as he was also forcing the burglary on the window out.

“With the foregoing, it was affirmed that he was one of the dreaded group. They sought after the target, they go about without weapon on them only to use any available weapon found in the homes of their supposed victims to brutally murder them. They usually rob oil on their body to grant them escape root.

“The angry crowd refused to release the culprit to the security operatives because of the antecedent of the security operatives of releasing such culprit, who will return on vengeful mission of deadly massacre.

“While the security operatives were trying to gain entrance into the scene, there were sporadic shooting which got three victims wounded and one had quickly been rushed to hospital. This triggered the angry crowd to forcefully bring the suspect out and burnt him to death.

“We call on the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi and other royal fathers to rise up and save the division from its current ugly and bad name.”

The Nation gathered that Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni visited the scene and addressed the crowd. He sued for peace and appealed to the people to avoid mob justice, assuring them that he was personally leading investigations on the insecurity in Ikorodu.

Owoseni, the residents said, promised that members of Badoo gang and their sponsors would be apprehended, urging them to report any pliant cop to him via SMS.

Ikorodu killings: Family in trouble for raising false alarm

An Ikorodu, Lagos State, family is in trouble for allegedly raising a false alarm that resulted in the killing of four persons in the town. The police are now on their trail to bring them to book, according to Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni.

Owoseni told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the family already declared wanted had a fight with another family over an undisclosed matter, and then proceeded to raise a false alarm that the victims were members of the notorious Badoo cult. “The police are after the family that raised the false alarm. We are investigating the case,” Owoseni said.

Sources had earlier told NAN that four persons, who were branded to be members of the notorious Badoo cult group in Adamo area of Ikorodu, were on Friday lynched by residents.

Members of the public, however, later discovered that the slain persons were not members of the notorious cult group but land speculators. NAN further learnt that three houses, two vehicles and motorcycles were set ablaze in a reprisal attack by colleagues of the slain persons.

An unnamed person was said to have started a building project on Thursday in Araro area of Adamo in Ikorodu. Some land speculators from Agunfoye area reportedly invaded the building site and demanded for royalty from the owner of the building.

A source told NAN that the man refused to give the men the money and they went away with a threat that they were coming back

“True to their threat, they mobilized and returned on Friday but unknown to them, the owner of the building had also mobilized some youths in the area,” the source said.

A clash was said to have ensued between the land speculators and the residents, forcing them to flee from the site of the building project. The land speculators were escaping when residents raised the alarm that they were members of the Badoo cult group.

It was also gathered that the residents had lied that the slain land speculators had earlier in the day killed a family of four people.

“More residents were mobilised and they reportedly chased the land speculators to where they were caught and beaten to stupor, with four of them eventually dying.

“The death of the land speculators sparked instant crisis as hoodlums from Agunfoye mobilised themselves and invaded Adamo where three houses were burnt.

“The Agungoye thugs, who were armed with assorted dangerous weapons including guns, matches and broken bottles, attacked residents of Araro, injuring some of them in the process.

“It took the intervention of policemen from the RRS and local divisions in Ikorodu before the angry hoodlums were dispersed,” a source told NAN.

  • LG elections: Lagos CP condemns violence at party’s mock primaries

LG elections: Lagos CP condemns violence at party’s mock primaries

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, on Tuesday urged members of political parties eschew violence ahead of the July 22 local government elections.

Owoseni made the appeal at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja while meeting with state chairmen and secretaries of the parties.

He said the meeting was called as a result of fracas which occurred in Surulere during mock primaries of a political party which claimed the life of a victim.

The police commissioner said it was also for proper interaction between the political parties and the police, to be able to nip in the bud any untoward incident.

“The incident that happened last week is a pointer that political activities in Lagos are no longer cordial as they used to be.

“This is Lagos where everyone has taken each other as brothers. I’m surprised to see an incident where someone had to lose his life.

“I see no reason why political activities should lead to the death of one. I thought we had gone beyond do or die politics.

“If we, in the process of wanting to get power kill people, then who do we govern when we eventually get the power?

“You will help us more if you don’t bring tension into political activities by giving us more time to fight criminals who are after our families.

“If you are going to make the few policemen we have follow politicians, it doesn’t make any sense. We need to lay good examples,” he said.

Mr Olubolaji Osinowo, State Secretary, Labor Party (LP), expressed the hope that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) would be fair to all parties, to avoid any form of violence.

Mr Funsho Ologunde, State Vice Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), also urged the electoral body to provide adequate forms to enable everyone who had aspiration to obtain them.

According to him, failure of the electoral body to do so is one the reasons why violence occurs during elections.

Comrade Fatai Ibuowo, State Chairman, National Conscience Party (NCP) urged the police to be neutral during the primaries and the elections to avoid violence.

He also identified the fees charged by LASIEC  for forms as a vexed issue which was causing tension and hould be reconsidered.

“LASIEC is charging fees for the collection of forms which is supposed to be free. The police should please intervene to prevent any form of violence.” he said.

Mr Lanre Ogundare, State Secretary, Accord Party commended the police on its efforts during the party’s primaries which were peaceful.

NAN reports that Owoseni subsequently gave the party representatives numbers to call whenever they need police assistance.

He advised them to inform the police of their activities at least 72 hours in advance.
