  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi’s victory, call to higher service – APC UK

The United Kingdom chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the victory of Dr Kayode Fayemi in the just-concluded Ekiti state governorship election as “a call to higher service”.

The chapter stated this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, following the announcement of the outcome of the election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Fayemi was APC’s candidate in the governorship contest held on Saturday.

The statement was jointly signed by Mr Ade Omole the chapter’s leader and Mr Jocab Ogunseye, its spokesman.

The party described Ekiti people as the “wisest for electing a thorough-bred and respected individual” like Fayemi as their governor, adding that they would not be disappointed by the governor-elect.

“We are confident that Fayemi will not disappoint the teeming followers and the general public of the state who have reposed their trust in his ability and experience to provide good governance for the state.

“Fayemi has done it before; he has also worked in the higher level,” it said.

It said that while he served as Minister of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Fayemi ensured that the moribund Ajaokuta Steal Company was revitalised.

It added that with Fayemi as governor, the people of Ekiti state should anticipate a new era different from the days of “stomach infrastructure”.

The APC chapter stated that the people of Ekiti would now have an era devoid of hooliganism and deceit in governance that had eroded the value of true governance and era that would not celebrate mediocrity.

“There is no doubt, expectations are great, the ceiling has been raised, the altitude is higher, and the people of Ekiti cannot afford to live in darkness as they have done in the past four years,” it said.

It, however, advised the governor-elect to provide an all-inclusive government irrespective of party affiliation “now that the election had been concluded”.

The chapter acknowledged that everyone had played a role in entrenching democracy in the state especially, and must therefore, be valued and respected.

In the result of the election as announced by INEC, Fayemi got 197, 459 votes to defeat his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opponent and closest, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, who scored 178,121 votes.

  • Buhari congratulates Fayemi, urges losers to be gallant in conceding defeat

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Dr. John Kayode Fayemi on winning the Ekiti State governorship election.

The President in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina  also commended  the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and all party supporters for the hard-fought victory after a dignified campaign.

He urged the governor-elect and APC members to be magnanimous in victory as the incoming administration prepares to unfold a new lease of life for the people of Ekiti State through purposeful and responsible governance.

He commended the people of the State for their matured and peaceful conduct as they made their choice using the power of the ballot.

President Buhari also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adequate preparations and displaying impartiality throughout the process.

He applauded the security agencies for creating the right atmosphere for the relatively peaceful conduct of the polls and urges them to sustain the peace and local and international observers and monitors for their vigilance and contributions towards the relatively hitch-free exercise.

The President urged the losers to be gallant in conceding defeat and use constitutional means to settle whatever grievances they may have rather than resort to self-help.

He Buhari appealed to all stakeholders in Ekiti State to work towards a successful transition to a new administration in the higher interest of not only the State but the entire nation and its fledgling democratic experience.

“In all this, the people of Ekiti State have spoken loud and clear, and democracy has won again,” the President said.

“The light is back again, darkness is over in Ekiti.”
Fayemi’s declaration as governor-elect has sparked jubilation in many towns and communities.

The PDP, however, rejected the results, saying the election was marred by irregularities and attacks of its members and supporters.

The party’s agent at the collation centre, Mr Sunday Olowolafe, urged the commission to stay action on the declaration of a winner until a re-run was conducted where there were established cases  of violence, vote-buying and ballot snatching.

Fayemi is expected to take over from the incumbent, Mr Ayo Fayose,  on Oct. 16, 2018.

  • How Fayemi defeated Eleka in Fayose’s LG

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in yesterday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, was the clear winner in Governor Ayodele Fayose’s Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, where many had expected Professor Eleka of the PDP to have a walk over.

    Fayemi polled 13,869 against Fayose’s anointed candidate’s 11,456 votes.

However, Eleka won in Fayose’s polling unit and ward which was not enough to secure victory for his party in the local government area.

The local government has 11 wards. Result from each ward was collated at the headquarters of INEC situated in Igede.

A total of 66,162 voters  are registered in the local government while 27,306 were accredited.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayemi commends electorate for turnout, conduct

The All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has commended the electorate in Ekiti for their impressive turnout and conduct in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Fayemi made the commendation after casting his ballot in his Unit 009, Ogilolo Ward 11, Isan-Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area, at about 10.28 a.m.

But, his wife, Bisi, who accompanied him to the polling station, could not vote as the Card Reader could not accredit her.

Although the electoral officials found her name on the voter register, the card reader did not recognise her voter card.

Assessing the electoral process, however, Fayemi said, “This is the day the Lord has made and we are glad in it. I have just voted in my Unit.

“The voting process is relatively smooth; my card was recognized. I was accredited and I went to cast my ballot.

“You can see the turn out in my community, it is huge. This is not a big community, but almost everyone is out to cast his vote.

“They ensure that they conduct themselves in a proper manner and not being disenfranchised.”

He, however, said that reports he got from his representatives revealed that though the exercise was peaceful in most places, there were also reports of skirmishes in some places, and Card Reader issues.

“I have had reports across the state from my agents, from our leaders; we have skirmishes, Card Reader issues, but also there has been relative calm in most places.

“It is too early to judge now; it is too early to give a final and full verdict on how the process on the ground out there in state is.

“I will plead with you, the media, to allow me some time to get more reports from the field before I give you a definitive statement about the process,” he added.

The Nation reports that large number of voters queued up to cast their ballots at the polling units in the ward.

The INEC voting list pasted in Unit 009 bore 345 names of eligible voters, including Fayemi and his wife

People’s wish will prevail – APC candidate

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has voted in his ward at Ogilolo ward 11, unit 009, Isan Ekiti, Oye local government area of the state.

Accompanied by his wife, Bisi, the APC candidate who arrived the voting unit at 9:23 a.m. went straight to join the long queue.

He voted at 10:45 a.m. amid cheers from his supporters.

Speaking with journalists after voting, Fayemi described the process as credible and peaceful, saying the wish of the people will prevail.

The former minister of solid minerals said: “Nigerians decided to choose democracy over dictatorship and that is why all of us must guard this democracy jealously. With the news we have been gathering around, the process has been okay for now.  So, I have faith in this election and I know the people of Ekiti will judge me based on what I did when I presided over this state and what the present government is doing. They can see that the difference is clear.”

  • Blackmailing observer groups won’t save Fayose from defeat -Fayemi

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation has accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of parading his supporters as fake INEC observers to blackmail the electoral body as a non-credible umpire to supervise free and fair election.

A statement by the Director, Media and Publicity of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Wole Olujobi, said Fayose will never succeed in misleading the nation into undeserved sympathy, saying any orchestration to discredit the Saturday governorship election in the state will never succeed.

The statement said: “We are aware of Governor Fayose’s devious orchestration in his blackmail stunt to discredit the entire process leading to the Saturday poll.

“He started his stunt three days ago when he lied that he was attacked by the police, resulting in the break of his neck.

“After blackmailing the police and succeeded in misleading the public, he went crawling in the night begging the police for forgiveness.

“Soon, Nigerians understood his trick and he is here again lining up his supporters he recruited from the neighbouring state who he dressed in INEC observers uniform in front of journalists camera just to discredit the process that will produce Dr Kayode Fayemi as the governor that Ekiti people want.

“This blackmail will not succeed and we hereby urge the good people of Ekiti State and Nigerians in general to discountenance this fraud to discredit this election.

“Fayose knows that his candidate, Prof Olusola Eleka, will lose this election after more than half of PDP members had deserted him.

“He is also aware of the backlash of the greed and heartlessness of his master in the manner he collected billions of naira in intervention funds to pay salary but diverted all, including cancellation of life-lifting schemes by Fayemi that greatly helped in lifting our people out of poverty.

“Eleka and Fayose are face to face with the reality of defeat and that is why they are trying all tricks to mislead the public and discredit that process that will produce Fayemi as the governor in tomorrow’s poll.”

He urged Ekiti people to disregard the parade of fake observers, saying those that Fayose had paraded are his supporters who he had tutored to present themselves as INEC observers.

  • Fed Govt spending Abacha loot to win poll for Fayemi, says Olusola

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Kolapo Olusola, has alleged that the Federal Government has set aside part of the $321 million loot of the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha for tomorrow’s governorship election in Ekiti State.

He claimed that about $50 million of the recovered loot was ferried from Abuja in a chartered flight through Akure Airport and conveyed to Ekiti State in two bullion vans to be spent in support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The Director, Media and Publicity of Kolapo Olusola Campaign Organisation, Lere Olayinka, also alleged in a statement yesterday that “preliminary findings” indicated that N2.5 billion cash was transferred by the Kebbi State Government to an account in UBA, Wuse Zone 4, Abuja.

He said: “We called you here to intimate the public through your various media organisations of the movement of huge cash by the federal government to Ekiti State for the Saturday election.

“Last week Saturday, two bullion vehicles were moved to the Akure Airport to evacuate cash brought from Abuja by a chartered flight.

“The flight landed when it was raining and all staff of the airport were barred from going near the aircraft while the cash was evacuated into the two bullion vehicles.

“After offloading the huge cash, the bullion van first moved to the Ondo State Government House in Akure from where they left for Isan Ekiti, the hometown of the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.”

On the alleged cash from Kebbi State, he said: “It was withdrawn immediately and moved with a private jet to Akure.

“Also, apart from the N2.5 billion, another $50m (about N18bn) was taking from the $321m recovered from the late Abacha family.

“Our question is, how can a government that claimed to be fighting corruption released billions of naira from the public coffers for the governorship election of a single State? Where is their fight against corruption?”

Olusola called on Nigerians to note this wanton looting of public fund by the APC government to fund election of its members.

“We must tell Fayemi and his APC that the conscience of the people of Ekiti cannot be purchased and we call on the people of Ekiti to resist the planned use of stolen fund to buy their votes of Saturday,” he added.

Olusola also called the attention of the public to alleged intimidation and harassment of PDP members by men of the Department of State Services and policemen.

“Already, Akin Fakorede, an officer of the Federal SARS has been posted to Ekiti State, ostensibly to play the same ignoble role that he played during the Rivers State election.

“Let me say it clearly that no amount of intimidation will scare our people away from the polling units where they will vote for the PDP on Saturday.

“We have the people behind us and they are more than ready to give our candidate their votes on Saturday.”

  • Fayemi urges Ekiti to chart path for value renewal

    •APC candidate ends campaign

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Kayode Fayemi, yesterday concluded his campaigns with a call on his kinsmen to use the election as a priceless opportunity to reclaim ‘our land’ and restore our values.’

He said the election presented a “bright prospect of correcting a historical wrong that has brought nothing but reproach to us as a people”.

Fayemi in a broadcast to Ekiti people recalled that four years ago, some of his compatriots deployed state agents to subvert the will of the people in a brazen electoral heist never witnessed in the history of Nigeria.

He regretted that since then, the ship of Ekiti State had lost track, resulting in poor conditions of living among the mass of the people who were treated with disdain.

Fayemi assured that the end is near for suffering and debasement of Ekiti values and integrity.

The former minister urged people to use the election to deepen democracy by ensuring free and fair exercise.

Fayemi said that in line with the law, security agencies had been deployed to maintain peace for credible poll and protect all Ekiti people, especially civil servants and teachers, who had been coerced to submit their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) by the current PDP administration.

“This is the oppressive psychological war they have unleashed on you to make you feel they are capable of knowing which party you have voted for after the election. This is indeed a patent lie.

“Let me at this juncture reiterate my avowed commitment – No Ekiti civil servant or teacher will be sacked by my administration if voted into office.

“If anything, the urgency of the task of restoring our education sector may demand that we equip our workforce with greater incentives and more conducive environments to function optimally,” Fayemi assured.

He added that his administration shall make salary payment a priority and effect immediate payment of the backlog of the salaries of civil servants and teachers.

“Your mandate would allow us to do these and more, so you are all free to vote for the return of dignified treatment of our workforce,” he said.

Fayemi urged INEC to live up to its sacred duty of ensuring that the character of secrecy constitutionally associated with secret ballot system is preserved even after the election.

Urging Ekiti people to make the right choice, Fayemi said:

“The choice is now before us to resume the march to break the yoke of ignorance that keeps our people down, liberate them from ill-health and other limitations that restrain them from achieving their full potential; or to choose the continuity of clueless governance, and the tightening of the stranglehold of poverty and ignorance.

“I have no doubt that you shall keep faith with us as we have with you through the years and vote for the APC.”

  • Why Ekiti will vote for me, by Fayemi

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Dr. Kayode Fayemi has traversed the 120 towns and villages in Ekiti State to sell his manifestos to voters. During the campaigns, he also pointed to the projects he executed during his first term in the far-flung communities, which have continued to rekindle nostalgia about his administration. In his view, the people will endorse him at the poll so that the second leg of his rescue mission can commence in October. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU revisits the achievements of the former governor in the Fountain of Knowledge.

During his first term, he was on a rescue mission. To him, governance was not a tea party. On assumption of office in 2010, reality dawned on him that it will take a while to reposition Ekiti State for excellence. Dr Kayode Fayemi hit the ground running, following his swearing him. He was prepared for the task. He excelled on the job. Although he could not secure a second term in 2014, his works still speak for him.

Four years after, the standard he set has not been met. “I did not owe salaries to workers and pensioners. There is no community today in Ekiti which did not feel the impact of our administration. Where we did not build road, we built schools. Where we did not built schools, we built hospitals. Where we did not build hospitals, we built the palaces of traditional rulers. We took care of the old people by given them stipends monthly,” he recalled at a rally in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

It is an understatement. Fayemi did not claim to have a monopoly of knowledge. He is an advocate of participatory governance. Thus, he carried out regular interactive sessions with indigenes at village squares. That became a veritable opportunity for the former governor to listen directly to people as they outlined their challenges. The projects later implemented were products of need analysis. “The 2012, 2013 and 2014 budgets were products of these interactions,” he said.

To the activist-scholar, education was a priority. Many schools were renovated and teachers’ salaries were increased thrice. The administration implemented the N19, 300 minimum wage for workers. Also, 27.5 per cent teachers’ pecuniary allowance was approved. Civil servants who were not promoted in the previous three years were promoted. Pensions and gratuities were paid to pensioners promptly.

Free education was restored. WAEC registration fees were paid for candidates. Five braide computers were donated to physically challenged students. One hundered dilapidated schools were renovated. Government established 42 new primary schools, trained 4,160 teachers under the Universal Basic Education Programme, purchased quality books for school libraries, procured instructional materials for schools, promoted 1,953 primary school teachers, established remedial colleges in 16 councils and awarded bursaries to indigent students. Senior principals were promoted to Grade Level 16 in the Civil Service.

Ekiti is a poor agrarian state. To assist the elders, a social welfare security scheme was instituted. Under the scheme, N5,000 was paid to senior citizens above 65 years. The initiative was life-prolonging. From 2011 to 2014, N2.5 billion was paid to give the aged a new lease of life.

Transparency was the watchword. Through scrutiny of financial books and blockage of loopholes, N7 billion was saved by the government between October 16, 2010 and April 30, 2014. There was alos a consistent devotion to the master plan of the administration, monitored by the Office of Transformation, Strategy and Delivery. This has engendered the implementation of the administration’s eight-point agenda. During the period, there was prompt institutional response to emergencies. N44.9 billion was expended on disaster management, including the provision of relief materials, palliatives, emergency evacuations and cash donations to victims.

Royal fathers had god tales to tell about Fayemi, who distributed 123 cars to the monarchs to enhance their effectiveness and performance as key participants in governance. Also, N600 m wer distributed to communities for self-help community projects.

In Ekiti, Fayemi contributed to the strengthening of the justice administration through the establishment of palace courts and structures for alternative dispute resolution. The government established the Job Creation and Employment Agency, which trained and engaged 5,000 volunteers in the first batch and additional 5,000 in the second batch. Each participant received N10 monthly stipends. Low-skilled old and young citizens were employed as street sweepers and facility managers. Through this, 1,5000 people were employed. Also, 200 school certificate holders were employed as office assistants in the ministries and departments under the Ekiti Project Volunteer Scheme; 166 youths were employed as fire fighters and paramedics to aid accident victims. Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA) was created. It employed 300 youths. The Peace Corps Agency, with 800 trained cadet officers, was also set up.

Fayemi fought the infrastructure battle with vigour. Many roads were constructed and rehabilitated. Federal roads were not neglected. N8 billion was spent on 1,038 kilometers of federal and state roads. There was the rehabilitation of 829 kilometers of farm access roads. The projects were evenly distributed across the local governments. Also, 105 kilometres of roads across the councils were constructed under the ‘Five kilometer Road Per Local Government. Urban renewal projects were also executed in major towns, including Ado, Ijero, Ikole and Ikere. The evidence are the street lights and quality roads with walkways in the state capital. During the period, five mini-water treatment plant projects were initiated; 167 ‘Eyitayo Fetching Points across various communities in 16 local governments were set up.

Under the electrification programme, 125 transformers to boost power supply were erected. “Many communities which hit5herto had no access to electricity in 200 years of their existence, including Oke-Ako in Ikole Council, were connected and linked with the national grid. Fayemi was labour-friendly. His government procured and distributed 100 Suzuki cars and 40 Nissan buses to the transport unions. Six luxury buses, 26-seater coaster buses and 18seater buses were donated as palliatives in the wake of fuel subsidy removal.

To boost agriculture, Fayemi attempted to resuscitate the old farm settlements of the Awolowo era. The Youth in Commercial Agricultural Development was established. Under the scheme, 669 youths were involved in cassava planting, rice production, nursery, aquaculture, afforestation, oil palm produce. Loans and other incentives were given to farmers to cultivate rice and maize. Fish farms were established in Efon-Alaaye, Igede and Ijesa-Isu. Twelve tractors valued at N72 million were purchased to support the FADAMA 111 project. Also, 143, 781 bags of fertilizers were distributed to farmers. The Ikun Diary Farm was revived; 209,560 oil palm seedlings were distributed to farmers in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The administration established a N600 million Small Scale Holding Cooperative Farmers Development Programme.

In the health sector, the governor recorded some feats. The free medical mission had nine editions. Many communities benefitted from the scheme. Government expended N266 million on the extension, renovation and upgrading of 18 secondary health facilities and 35 upcoming primary health facilities in the state. The administration disbursed over N190 million to procure local and overseas referral services for citizens who needed urgent medical assistance. The administration built two new General Hospitals and organised free eye screening and surgery for 2,000 patients. Fifty cataract surgeries were done.

In the area of industrialization, Fayemi provided the right atmosphere for investment to thrive. The state was peaceful during his tenure. Many investments were attracted to the state.

The administration scored some feats in tourism. Ekiti State Council of Arts and Culture and Film Village were established. Its best legacy was the Ikogosi Warms Springs Resort. It is distressing to the former governor that the gains were reversed through lack of maintenance culture after he left office. Indeedd, Fayemi embarked on the renewal of the warm spring. The first phase of the development plan was completed with standard suits and VIP accommodation facilities, multi-purpose conference hall, 60-seat meeting and functions rooms, shopping mall, fitness and business centre, standard rooms for students during excusions, reception, multi-purpose building, warm water adult swimming pool, children’s pool, restaurants, amphi-theatre, tourism village, laundry, warehouses, security gadgets, hotels and lodges.
