  • Nollywood actor urges freshers to work hard

    The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) chapter of the Anambra State Students’ Association (ASSA) has welcome new members. The ceremony, which featured orientation, took place at Faculty of Social Science Quadrangle and witnessed a large turnout of students.

    Guests at the event included a Nollywood actor and Senior Special Adviser on Entertainment to Anambra State Governor, Mr Bob Manuel Udokwu, a senior lecturer in the school, Prof D.O. Obikwelu, and the association’s Staff Adviser, Dr S.C. Ejiofor.

    Bob Manuel advised the students to be determined and work hard to achieve success in their courses of study.

    He said: “As students, there are two important things you need to note and practice always. You must study hard and pass examination. You must embrace the art of thinking independently and do things yourself. If you write your papers yourself, you will build integrity and personal morale to tackle any challenge.”

    The actor told the freshers to develop passion for whatever courses they study, admonishing that they should start practising what they are studying as it will help them build the confidence and take them to greater height.

    He added: “I started acting as an undergraduate, during which I travelled from Port Harcourt to Lagos for Checkmate. That was why it was so easy for me to make it into the movie industry.”

    Prof Obikwelu advised the students shun vices that could jeopardise their academic pursuits. He warned them against malpractice, saying anyone caught would be expelled.

    ASSA president, Nnuta Nnamdi, assured the freshers of association’s help in tackling their challenges. He said the executive would set up a committee they could relate their challenges on campus.

    Highpoint of the event was the presentation of award to Bob Manuel to recognise his outstanding feat and for being a role model for the youth.

    The students also cut of new yam to mark the beginning of their career. A fresher, Ebere Obidozo, said: “The orientation is an eye-opener for me and I have learnt tips that can make me to achieve my aim. I am proud to come from Anambra State.”

     

  • Institute welcomes 662 freshers

    The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos has matriculated freshers admitted into the School of Technical Education. The programme is being run in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

    About 663 fresh students took the oath at the college’s Multipurpose Hall. They were presented by the Dean of the School, Mrs Hannah Akanbi.

    In his address, the UNN Vice-Chancellor, Prof Benjamin Ozumba, represented by Dr Joshua Umeifekwe, coordinator of Affiliation Programmes, urged the freshers to pursue academic excellence and good values. He told the students that they were privileged to be offered admission, noting that over 40,000 candidates applied for the programme.

    He said: “You should make best use of this golden opportunity of your admission. To do this, you all must remain conscious of the expectation of your parents, as well as the enormous sacrifice they will make to see you through your programme.”

    Prof Ozumba told the students that they had double allegiance to keep, saying they must adhere strictly to the rules and regulation of YABATECH and UNN.

    He added: “You must attend 75 per cent of lectures. This is why you have to spend your time judiciously and avoid crime, such as stealing, cheating, forgery and examination malpractice. The university has stringent rules against vices.”

    The YABATECH Rector, Dr Margaret Ladipo, represented by the Deputy Rector (Academic), Mr Innocent Akhuemonkan, urged the students to take their studies seriously.

    The Rector reiterated the college’s commitment to train the students in skills that would empower them to contribute their quota to the development the country, urging for cooperation of the students to enable the School of Technical Education accomplish its aims.

    While the ceremony was going on, Akhuemonkan ordered security officers not to allow some freshers, who came late for the event into the venue. The Deputy Rector said the school would not condone indiscipline.

    The affected students were not happy about the development, describing the action of the Deputy Rector as unfair. “It is unfortunate and sad that we are locked out of the venue if the matriculation. They didn’t know the reason for our lateness but they concluded we are not disciplined,” said a student, who simply identified himself as Rufus.

    But a lecturer, Jinadu Oyediran, defended the Deputy Rector’s directive, reprimanding the affected students. He said: “Why did they come late to an event billed to start by 10am? The students came one hour behind schedule and they wanted us to welcome them.”

  • Freshers elect representatives

    Fresh students of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) in Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday elected new representatives for their classes.

    The set, which was divided into two streams, National Diploma 1A and 1B, had the election coordinated by the Students’ Representative Council, SRC.

    Obatobi Bada emerged the governor, while Peace Morrison became the deputy governor. Ekanem Idara was elected as Social Director and Daniel Chikwendu, Sport Director for ND 1A.

    For ND 1B, Chidinma Ubani emerged governor, Christian Oparanugo, deputy governor, while Samuel Taliba, Kafayat Aliyu and Taiwo Owoyemi were elected Social Director, Welfare Director and Sports Director respectively.

    Obatobi, appreciated his colleague for giving him the chance to serve them, vowing to ensure their welfare was attended to all time.

    He said: “I appreciate my colleague for having trust and electing me as their governor. I promise to do my best and contribute my quota to the glory of this class.”

    Chidinma promised to do her best to serve her colleagues and ensure their academic objectives are achieved.

    Advising the students’ leaders, the Chairman, Students’ Representative Council, Dayo Oladiti, urged them to act in accordance with the regulation of the school and use their position to inform students about the management’s activities to ensure peace in the school.

  • Rector advises freshers against vices

    The 21st matriculation of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa (OFFA POLY) in Kwara State has been held on Thursday at the 1,000-capacity Lecture Theatre.

    At the event, the Rector, Dr Muftau Olatinwo, advised the freshers to shun vices that could terminate their academic pursuits.

    Olainwo, who was represented at the event, said: “Let me make it abundantly clear that polytechnic has zero tolerance for vices. Having taken the matriculation oath today, I urge you to respect and observe the oath by eschewing all crimes, such as cultism, examination misconduct, drug addiction, rape, murder, prostitution, indecent dressing, kidnapping and any form of violence against humanity.

    “This polytechnic is governed by laws and the instrument of law shall be applied at anyone that commits infraction. I advise you to guard your admission jealousy and resist anything that may want to rub you of this golden privilege to study in this institution.”

    The Rector added that the polytechnic students topped the list of beneficiaries of state government’s scholarship, urging the freshers to brace up for excellence. He said the institution aimed to produce confident, self-reliant and knowledgeable graduates, who could compete with their peers anywhere in the world.

    The Rector ended his speech, urging the students to keep to the institution’s measures to prevent outbreak of deadly diseases, such as the Ebola on the campus.

    The president of Students’ Union Government (SUG), Festus Adedeji, appealed to the students to report strange activities around them to appropriate authority to ensure their security. “Do not go to unsafe locations. Avoid the company of people with suspicious and questionable character and if your life is being threatened by anybody, do not hesitate to contact the security unit or the Students’ Affairs Unit,” he said.

    Some of the matriculating students spoke to CAMPUSLIFE. Fatima Mustipha, an HND 1 Office Technology and Management student, said: “I am happy for being re-admitted again into the institution after my National Diploma. I am glad to be back.”

    Ganiyu Ayodeji, a 16-year-old admitted to study Quantity Surveying, said: “It feels good to gain admission at first trial. God did it for me and I will not disappoint.”

    After the official ceremony, the polytechnic’s drama group entertained the guests and the students.

  • College welcomes freshers, restores SUG

    The Federal College of Education (FCE) in Obudu, Cross River State, has held its third matriculation for degree and diploma students.

    The event, held at the Senator Greg Ngaji Lecture Theatre, was attended 352 students who were admitted into the college to study various courses.

    The Governing Council of the college used the occasion to announce that it had lifted the ban on students’ unionism. The college, for several years, had operated without a functional Students’ Union Government (SUG), following alleged maladministration by past students’ leaders.

    Speaking to CAMPUS LIFE, the Provost, Dr Eugene Ibli, noted the college, since inception of in November 1982, had become a reference point in quality education, adding that the institution was doing its best to improve the standard of teaching and learning.

    Ibli noted that students were taught entrepreneurship courses to be independent and wealth creators after graduation. Apart from giving quality knowledge to students, he said the academic culture in the college groomed students and trained them to be thinkers and innovators of good ideas.

    The Provost urged staff to carry out their duties diligently and serve as role model to students.

    The students took the matriculation oath, promising to shun vices including cultism and examination malpractice, among others.

    One of them, Miss Grace Odey, said she had been waiting to be admitted into the institution, promising to pursue excellence.

  • Varsity orientates freshers

    Freshers admitted into Adeleke University (ADELEKE) in Ede, Osun State have been advised to focus on achieving excellence and pursue their academic goals with vigour. The advice came at the orientation held for the fresh students at the University Hall last week.

    In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oluwole Amusan, urged the students to study hard to become independent human beings. He told them not to engage in act that may terminate their academic pursuits, saying excellence should be their watchword.0

    He said: “You must avoid vices, such as cultism, examination malpractices, drug abuse, theft, sexual harassment and indecent practices that may lead to your expulsion. We want to ensure a continued peace and stability on the campus. Your primary purpose in the university is the pursuit of academic excellence. You are expected to study hard to achieve this.”

    In his exhortation, the university pastor, Gbenga Efuuntade, who read from Jeremiah 29 vs 11, reminded the students on the need to aim for success by praying and having faith in God.

    The Librarian, Dr Bola Atulomah and Bursar, Mr. Emeka Anne, took turns to advise the students.

    Theatre Arts initiates freshers

    The chief priest and his assistants led the procession. The inductees trailed them. All clad in white attires with palm fronds held across their mouths. They all headed to the shrine to perform initiation rite on the inductees.

    This was the scene at the Faculty of Arts of the Lagos State University (LASU) when Association of Theatre Arts Students (ATAS) held its sessional induction ceremony to welcome freshers. The induction started with performances by the freshers to entertain students, who gathered to witness the ceremony. The ‘shrine’ was stationed beside the School Theatre Arts auditorium.

    As the procession approached the shrine, the chief priest, Emmanuel Adejumo, chanted incantations to appease the ‘gods’ to accept the sacrifice. Busola Balogun, the ATAS Vice President, who bore an ash-coated calabash, rendered poetical composition to sing the praises of the ’ancestors’.

    At the shrine, the inductees were asked to squat to receive the blessings from the ‘gods’. The priest touched all of them with the palm fronds to initiate them into the fold. Afterwards, they were led into the auditorium, where the faculty staff and students were waiting to receive them.

    The association leaders took turns to orientate the freshers on the rules and regulation of the faculty. The General Secretary, Victor Odoche, said 35 students were present for the induction, stressing that any student who did not show up for the ceremony would be penalised by the thespian community.

    The Sports Director, Charles Ayodeji, said the ritual was a formal way of welcoming freshers, saying the ceremony would prepare the students for the task ahead.

    The Treasurer, Edward Mbodi, said there was no spiritual connotation in the rite, noting that many believe Arts students are fetish. “Most people view the initiation ritual as spiritual undertaking because of the manner with which performed. There is nothing spiritual about it. We deliberately chose to perform the rite in that way because it is a process of initiating a newcomer into a group in Yoruba tradition,” he said.

    The National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS) at the the Federal Polytechnic, Offa (OFFA POLY), has held orientation for freshers at the institution’s Adesoye Hall.

    In his welcome remark, Mr Kolapo R.O, urged the freshers to build strong academic foundation.

    “Don’t limit yourself to getting a diploma only. You should focus on how you will acquire degrees in the university and also go for your masters,’’ he said.

    The Student Union Government President, Adedeji Festus, charged the freshers to avoid examination malpractice and other vices, warning them not be carried away by social activities in the institution.

    President of the association, Akintunde Moruf Dolapo, said: “Education is the only panacea to poverty and banish ignorance in the society. It is the only way that allows one to get ahead in life and be successful.”

    He charged students to shun cultism, destructive criticism, tribalism, drug abuse, provocative dressing and hooliganism.

  • Stay away from cultism, VC tells freshers

    NO fewer than 5,608 students have matriculated at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Bamitale Omole congratulated the students on their success in the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), describing the  exercise as strict.

    He said: “I welcome you, our dear matriculating students, to the Obafemi Awolowo University. After the oath you have taken today, you have now become part of the university community with all the rights and privileges of being a member of this unique institution.”

    The VC advised them to take their studies seriously and refrain from cultism, examination malpractices and vices that could terminate their academic pursuits.

    He added: “You must not engage in cultism, examination malpractices and vices such as indecent dressing, drug abuse, theft, sexual harassment and fighting to ensure a peaceful atmosphere and stability of academic progrmmes. Your primary purpose in this university is the pursuit of academic excellence. You are, therefore, expected to study hard,” he stated.

    The oath was administered on the students by the Registrar, Mr D. O. Awoyemi.

    Some of the freshers and their parents spoke to our correspondents after the event.

    Olusegun Ajibola, 100-Level Law expressed gratitude to God to have scaled through the rigour of admission process. ‘’I cannot just quantify my happiness today because my admission. into this citadel of learning is more of a privilege than works and worth. My expectations are high for the journey ahead; to be a man of character and great reputation at the end of it all’’.

    Speaking on the recent rumour on the outbreak of Ebola virus on campus, the VC cautioned rumour mongers to verify their sources of information so as avoid panic in the university community.

    Other principal officers who attended the ceremony included deans of faculties, Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof S.O. Ogunniyi; Provost, Post-graduate College, Prof S. I. Oladeji.

  • Shun cultism, freshers told

    Members of the National Association of Mass Communication Students (NAMCOS) at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, have organised orientation for freshers at the institution’s Stella Obasanjo Hall.

    Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osogbo branch, Baba tunde Fanawope, advised the students to be focused and take their studies seriously.

    The Head of Department, Mr A. A. Oyewole, charged the freshers to shun examination malpractice and cultism.

    President of the association, Ahmed Ibrahim, thanked lecturers and students for being present at the programme. He taught the students how to calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), advising them to study hard to excel.

    The Students’ Adviser, Mr Chuks Osoji, spoke on the need for the students to obey rules and regulations guiding the school.

    The programme also featured presentations by students. ,

    Some freshers who spoke to CAMPUSLIFE said they were excited to be admitted into the polytechnic.
