Fulham’s Bassey reveals winning magic against Man United

Fulham’s   defender  Calvin Bassey has revealed  the  winning magic that saw  his side  claimed a  shock 2-1 over Manchester United at the weekend.

Saturday’s  win  for the  Cottagers  was   actually made in Nigeria as Bassey  got their opener for just a third goal of his entire career and a first for The Cottagers. The 24-year-old  smashed the ball home from 10-yards after United failed to clear a corner to give the visitors the lead on 65 minutes.
Bassey  wasn’t the only Super Eagles  to  have scored  in the  dramatic  away win at Old  Trafford as his compatriot, Alex Iwobi , struck with a stunning  97th minute winner  for what was  his  fourth goal since his move to west London earlier this campaign.

Speaking on the famous win, Bassey reckoned Fulham ‘wanted it more’ than Manchester United.

“I don’t think you can just come here and overrun them — you can see the quality of the players they have”, Bassey said after Saturday’s surprise win.

“They have got top players and a top manager and players that can have an effect off the bench. But we were just at it more and I felt we wanted it more today. That showed in the way we played.

“Of course, we had belief. It was just the details and making sure we got the details right. It worked out for us, thank God.

“Even if we are not good on the ball, the minimum we can do is work as hard as the team we are playing, or more. That is our foundation, and I think we have done that well throughout the season.”

Match-winner Iwobi was similarly delighted after sealing Fulham’s victory on his first start since returning from Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final.

“I’m over the moon to come back into the team and get a win at Old Trafford, there’s no better feeling”, he said. “We feel like we’ve been performing well recently — it’s just about getting the results. To do it at Old Trafford, hopefully we can kick on from this performance.”

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Oliseh hails Bassey, Iwobi on London derby win

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey celebrated his 24th  birthday with a huge London Derby win over Arsenal yesterday as  he  heads out to the AFCON a very confident man.

Fulham stopped city rivals Arsenal 2-1 with Bassey playing a major role in this victory.

It was a command performance by the central defender as he completed 100% take-ons, 93% pass accuracy, 76 touches, 60 passes, 5 final third entries, 5 x possession won, 5 clearances (most), 5 duels won, 3 tackles made and 2 interceptions.

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh praised Bassey and fellow Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi.

“Extremely impressed by the maturity and discipline put up Versus Arsenal, by Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi as they played decisive roles in Fulham’s victory – over a seemingly, mentally tired Arsenal. Encouraging for the AFCON. Una do well !!,” he posted on X( formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, Arsenal missed the chance to go top of the Premier League at New Year after the disappointing defeat at Fulham.

Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead inside five minutes but Raul Jimenez equalised on his return from suspension, before Bobby Decordova-Reid scrambled home the winner on the hour.

The loss left Arsenal fourth and two points behind leaders Liverpool, who host Newcastle on New Year’s Day.

Fulham are 13th   after ending a run of three straight defeats.

Arsenal made the perfect start with a fifth-minute opener following a quick break from the back.

Gabriel Martinelli’s curling shot from the left was palmed out by former Gunners keeper Bernd Leno, allowing Saka to stick out a right leg and loop the ball into the net from six yards.

But Fulham reacted well and equalised in the 29th   minute when Willian, another ex-Arsenal player in the home ranks, fed captain Tom Cairney down the left and his dangerous low cross was swept in by Jimenez.

Marco Silva’s men deservedly claimed the winner from a corner when Decordova-Reid stabbed a finish past David Raya following pinball in the box – condemning Arsenal to consecutive losses following the 2-0 home defeat to West Ham on Thursday.

Liverpool set new  record in Fulham’s  triumph

Liverpool broke a club winning record in their enthralling 4-3 victory over Fulham at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side welcomed the Cottagers to their Merseyside back on the back of 10 successive wins from 10 home games in the 2023-24 season, including a 4-0 Europa League thrashing of LASK Linz on Thursday.

After unsurprisingly putting out a rejigged XI for that continental affair, Klopp reverted to a full-strength side for the visit of Fulham, who travelled north on the back of a thrilling 3-2 beating of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

It came as no surprise to see Liverpool start the brighter at Anfield, and they were rewarded when a Trent Alexander-Arnold free kick struck the back of Bernd Leno and bounced over the line.

However, Klopp’s men were sloppy defensively and allowed Fulham a route back into the game through former winger Harry Wilson, who poked home through Caoimhin Kelleher’s legs after being teed up by Antonee Robinson.

A 30-yard Alexis Mac Allister thunderbolt restored the hosts’ one-goal advantage, only for Kenny Tete to capitalise on more lackadaisical Reds defending just before the break to draw Fulham level again.

After Darwin Nunez squandered a couple of chances to bag Liverpool’s third, Klopp’s men were staring down the barrel of defeat when Bobby Decordova-Reid outmuscled Kostas Tsimikas and headed home at the back post in the 80th  minute.

The Cottagers’ lead lasted all of five minutes, though, as Wataru Endo curled home a stunning leveller in the 85th  minute, two moments before an Alexander-Arnold drive completed a remarkable Liverpool fightback.

With Fulham’s third goal of the afternoon coming in the 80th  minute, Liverpool set a new club record on Sunday, as the Reds have never come from behind to prevail so late in a Premier League game before.

The seven-goal spectacular also marked the first time since September 2020 that Liverpool had both scored and conceded at least twice in the first half of a Premier League game at Anfield, which was coincidentally a 4-3 win over Leeds United.

Meanwhile, Salah was denied his 150th Premier League goal on Sunday, but having nodded the ball down for Endo’s strike, the Egyptian has now scored or assisted in 16 successive Premier League home matches.

  • Everton may trade off Iwobi to Fulham

Everton may trade off Iwobi to Fulham

As the transfer deadline looms this week, Alex Iwobi may be on his way to Fulham for a reunion with his former coach Marco Silva.

Iwobi has been at the centre of signing a new contract at Everton as the Nigerian had one year left in his contract. But the management of Everton have been dilly-dally with the former Arsenal star.

Iwobi has been among Everton’s stand-out performers in the last 18 months but the recent additions of Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison appear to have opened the door to an exit, if Fulham submit an offer for the Nigerian.

The former Arsenal star has netted nine goals for Everton across 140 appearances but played a key role in helping the club avoid the threat of relegation for the past two seasons.

In Iwobi, Silva could also find himself sharing a dressing room once again with a player he was determined to sign during the summer of 2019 at Goodison Park.

“Alex was one of our main targets for this window,” former Everton boss Silva said back in 2019, Everton agreeing a £35 million fee with Arsenal.

“I believe he is a fantastic signing. He is a direct and skilful winger and attacking midfielder, who always works very hard for his team.

“Alex fits exactly the profile of player I want in my model.”

Iwobi might not have lived up to his eye-watering price-tag at Goodison Park.

But Fulham, under Silva, have established themselves as something of a launch pad for underperforming players in need of a fresh start as Bernd Leno, Andreas Pereira and Willian, among others, were outstanding as the Cottagers secured a top-half finish in 2022/23.

Iwobi, meanwhile, has just one year left on his Everton contract. The cash-strapped Toffees may jump at the chance to cash in before the month is out, then. While the additions of Jack Harrison, Ashley Young and Arnaut Danjuma have improved Sean Dyche’s options in wide areas.

Joao Palhinha secured a point for 10-man Fulham in an entertaining Premier League draw away to Arsenal.

Palhinha’s first-time finish from a corner earned the away side a share of the spoils.

The Cottagers had Calvin Bassey sent off in the 83rd minute after fouling Eddie Nketiah on the counter attack.

Andreas Pereira got Fulham off to a flying start, scoring after just 57 seconds.

Nketiah scored Arsenal’s second as they came from behind to take the lead, before Fulham had the final word.

  • End of the road for huge spending Fulham out of EPL

Fulham have been relegated from the Premier League after suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday night.

The Cottagers conceded three goals in just 12 minutes to end their miserable return to the top flight of English football and consign themselves to the Championship once again.

Despite a record outlay of over £100million on transfers last summer – the most ever spent by a newly-promoted club – they failed to produce on the pitch, picking up just 17 points from 33 games.

Slavisa Jokanovic was axed in November after maintaining the style of play that got them promoted but failed to adapt it to the Premier League as they became unstuck.

Claudio Ranieri came in to steady the ship but they continued to struggle to collect points. The Italian left in February before Scott Parker was handed the reigns. It was too late by then though and they have now been relegated with five matches left.

There was much optimism around Craven Cottage last summer when Fulham broke their transfer record three times. However, of their permanent buys, only Aleksandar Mitrovic shone with midfield duo Jean Michael Seri and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, who cost around £55m between them, struggling to adapt.

Fulham’s defence was catastrophic all season and continued to cost them when their attack looked bright.

They have conceded 76 goals in 33 matches, the worst record in the top flight by some distance, with neither Jokanovic, Ranieri or caretaker boss Parker able to tighten things up.

There were also off-field issues that threatened to derail their season with Ranieri admitting at one stage that he wanted ‘kill’ Aboubakar Kamara after he snatched the ball from Mitrovic to take a penalty, and then missed, against Huddersfield.

  • Chelsea battle past Fulham in West London derby

Chelsea have recorded their second successive win in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Fulham in yesterday’s West London derby.

Gonzalo Higuain’s opener was cancelled out by Calum Chambers but Jorginho netted Chelsea’s second shortly afterwards, and it proved decisive as the Blues moved to within two points of fourth-placed Manchester United.

Fulham impressed in Scott Parker’s first game in charge, but the Cottagers remain 10 points adrift of safety with just nine matches remaining.

Chelsea began the game on the front foot with Higuain sending a glancing header wide of the post, but Fulham hit straight back with Joe Bryan seeing a long-range curler go marginally off target.

Ross Barkley was the next to try his luck with a well-struck strike which went over the crossbar, but Chelsea soon went in front with Higuain volleying home from 12 yards after meeting Cesar Azpilicueta’s low cross.

However, there was no suggestion that Fulham were going to wilt, and only a fine Kepa Arrizabalaga save prevented Aleksandar Mitrovic’s volley from finding the top corner.

The Cottagers’ equaliser came from the resulting corner, with Ryan Babel’s inswinging cross allowing Chambers to send an eight-yard volley past Arrizabalaga having been left free at the back post.

Chelsea became nervous at the back as Fulham remained intent on trying to capitalise on the momentum which they had created, but the Blues did not have to wait long before regaining their advantage.

Eden Hazard did well down the left before teeing up Jorginho on the edge of the area, and the Italian proceeded to find the far top corner with a first-time effort from 20 yards out.

The goal provided Chelsea with further encouragement to attack Fulham, and the visitors only remained competitive in the game thanks to Sergio Rico making excellent reaction saves to keep out each of Hazard and Higuain.

Chelsea continued to look for a third after the restart, and Hazard and Willian both had shots saved by Rico who remained busy in the Fulham goal.

Willian also sent a volley into the side-netting after being found by a long raking pass, but Fulham remained a threat at the other end and Mitrovic almost found the roof of the net with a powerful effort from distance.

  • Fulham sack Ranieri, appoint Parker as caretaker manager

Struggling English Premier League (EPL) club Fulham sacked Claudio Ranieri as manager on Thursday, after a little over three months in charge.

The Italian won just 12 points in 16 games after taking over, leaving the club second from bottom and 10 points from safety with just 10 games to go.

In a statement, Fulham named Scott Parker as caretaker manager.

Ranieri led Leicester City FC to the EPL title in 2016.

  • TAYO EDUN: Mum remains my biggest supporter

TAYO EDUN: Mum remains my biggest supporter

FRESH from conquering Europe at the Georgia 2017 U19 Championship, England midfielder of Nigerian descent, Adetayo Edun, says he’s not relenting on his rising profile.

The 19-year-old recently returned to Fulham after his exploit with the England U19s who were crowned champions at the event this summer.

The versatile midfielder, who is an academy graduate has already signed a new contract with Fulham that will run until the summer of 2020, has been impressive in the pre-season tune up matches.

Edun is hoping to make an impact on the first team in the coming season. “I am happy to have signed a new deal with Fulham FC. I hope to push on from here and continue the hard work!”

Speaking about his experience at the U19 European Championship, Edun, who had also represented England at U17, and U18 levels previously, said he was a happy to be a part of history.

“My role at the U19 is a bit different from how I play at left-back but being able to play both positions has helped me a lot, not only with England but at my club also,” he enthused.

“I’ve always been told that it’s good to be adaptive to different positions; with the midfielders we have, we can use a range of formations and challenge teams a lot and that helped us. It was hard work from all the boys; we put in a lot of effort.”

He noted being positive made a lot of difference for the team too. “It’s all positive in the squad.”

The journey, Edun confirmed, started from the England U17.

“The story started for me from the U17 squad. I wasn’t sure about the call-up because I had a bit of a rough time, getting sent off twice in my last two games. I was called up to the U17 team in 2015 and since then I’ve received invitation to play for the team.

“I’m quite familiar with a lot of the boys. I even come and see them when I’m away from Fulham. Outside of the club, I’ll go and see some of them now and again, so they’re familiar faces.

“So I’m happy that the coach trusts me in such a big competition and I’m pleased that he hasn’t made any drastic changes and taken me out! I’m happy that he’s trusted me because understandably he would have had a couple of doubts, but I’m ready to go and show him that it’s worth taking me. I’ve never been to South America before so it was a good experience.”

Primarily a full-back – which is where he tends to feature for the national team – Edun is happy to fill in wherever he’s needed for club or country.

“I prefer left-back but wherever you play on the pitch you’ve got to do the job for the team,” he said. “It’s good for me to have that option that I can help out at left-back or centre-mid. As I said, I prefer left-back, but I don’t mind doing a job further forward if needed. I like playing for the 21s a lot. I think Peter Grant’s got a good idea of how to improve us as a team and as individuals. He has a lot of advice for everyone in each and every position. As you can see, this year we’ve started better than we finished last season, so we’re going onwards and upwards.”

Tied to Fulham till 2020, he is of the opinion that the Championship side had good last season.   Fulham finished the season on the sixth position missing the playoff by whiskers. “It was tough. We lost a crucial match to Newcastle, which was more of a loss, because if we have them in the Play-Offs now, they could go into it thinking ‘we beat these guys and we can do it again’. We wanted to get the momentum going because we know we are definitely good enough to be in the first division and that’s where we are trying to end up.

“I think the season’s been good, the amount of players that have been in and out of the team, and we’ve still continued to bond. We can still keep the structure and everyone’s on the same page; we can have a chance to get promotion which is key, next season.”

On the soft side, Edun has kind words for his mum whom he calls the biggest influence on his career. “My mum’s actually been my biggest supporter from the beginning; a parent that allows you to pursue your dreams and not theirs, priceless.”

    WHO IS TAYO EDUN?

An assertive individual who is comfortable operating anywhere on the left, either as a full-back or wide midfielder. Edun has got excellent determination and is also a strong athlete.

A promising 2014/15 campaign saw him break into both the England Under-17 and Fulham Under-21 setups. He went on to make six appearances for Peter Grant’s side, one of which saw him score the winning goal against Liverpool U21s. He made his senior debut for the club in the 2016/17 season in and EFL Cup 3-2 win over Leyton Orient, playing the full 90 minutes.

He went on to make three appearances for the 1st team. For the Under-23s, Edun played 24 games where he scored three goals, assisted five and created 52 chances, mostly from left back. He was called up to England’s Under-19 team and helped them qualify for the European Championships, scoring a fantastic goal in a qualifier against Norway.

Emenike to swap Fenerbahce for Fulham

Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike, could be used as makeweight in the deal by Fenerbahce to land the signature of Kostas Mitroglou from Fulham, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

Reports have has suggested that the Londoners would be willing to offload the Greece international in the summer transfer market after failing to make an impact at the club due to injuries.

Greek side, Olympiakos is also interested in the forward, but Fenerbahce hopes to steal a march on its rivals by offering Emenike to the Championship club as part of a deal that would see Mitroglou move in the opposite direction.

The Nigerian striker recently purchased a house in Essex which has fueled speculation that he could be moving to an English club sooner rather than later.

The 27 – year – old joined Fenerbahce from Spartak Moscow in 2013 for a fee thought to be around 13 million euros.
