Austen Peters also emphasised the importance of telling the African story through movies in its raw form.

“If you’re talking about local culture, I think we are in a better position to tell our own stories, foreigners can’t do that for us. Anytime we try to borrow their culture, you will notice that we fall short because we are borrowing what is not ours. But when we talk about who we are, nobody can talk about your home better than you.

“So what we are doing now is showcasing the best of African culture. There are lots of Africans in the diaspora who have travelled all over the world and are yearning for something that will tie them back to the motherland. I don’t think we can do anything better than to start focusing more on telling our story to the world, and I think the world is waiting for Nigerians to do that.”

So I was on a project with Ayo Adesanya, and I told her that I don’t have roles and she said, ‘I’ll talk to a producer, and I will have you on board for Yoruba movies.’ And she spoke to the producer and I was invited to come and act in Osogbo then.

“From there, I met with Fathia Balogun. I met Iyabo Ojo and I told them I need roles and Iyabo said, ‘Okay, come come.’ She took me to the Odun Fakoko where you have the Yinka Quadri and Taiwo Hassan. She said, ‘This is my friend. Give her a job,’” Akindele said.

“You have to stay focused. The little you have, manage it. Don’t be greedy. Don’t look at what your neighbors have and say you want to have what they have. When the time comes for you to have luxurious things, you’ll have them.

“I used to buy my handbags from ‘bend down select.’ I would wash and iron them and slay with them. Even with the cheap bags, I still felt good. Just believe in yourself. And watch what you feed yourself with.

“Content that would drive you crazy, people that would say things that would upset you, toxic people—avoid them. Because you’re growing in a new space. It’s what you feed yourself with that matters. It really matters because if you feed yourself with negativity, at the end of the day you would believe you can’t do it because you’re not pretty enough.”

Speaking in an interview with Arise News, she said: “I enjoy watching beautiful content, but you have to watch what you churn out. You need to focus on your brand, what you’re selling, and what you want people to learn from you.

“If you’re an actor, a self-made person, what are you churning out? You must influence lives positively with the content you churn out. And for you that are watching content, are you watching to be entertained, to learn? ‘A’ is carrying a designer bag and showing you on video, how sure are you that she’s not borrowing the bag? How sure are you she’s rich? Don’t believe everything on social media.

“I’m so worried about these so-called baddies. A baddie without showcasing what you have upstairs? We need to know what you are doing, and what positive content you are doing that people would be proud of. Give us that on the table. Yes, it’s good to showcase fashion. But what do you have upstairs to show us? Are you just a baddie for the mouth? Even if you are a dancer, what else do you have?”
