FUOYE governing council exonerates VC over alleged sexual harassment

The Governing Council of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has cleared its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, of allegations of sexual harassment of  a worker of the institution.

The university in the last few months had been embroiled in a series of controversies over the reported allegations of sexual harassment against the VC by a member of staff, Folasade Adebayo, an engineer, who was the director of Physical Planning and Director of Works and Services.

Also, the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUOYE branch, was at loggerheads with the university management over some issues relating to the suspension of their leadership. The governing council under the leadership of the chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN in January set up an investigative panel with a view of resolving the imbroglio in the interest of the parties and the institution.

The Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mufutau Ibrahim, in a statement yesterday, said the council during its extraordinary meeting on April 8, considered the report of the investigative Committees constituted on the issues.

Exonerating the VC of the allegations, the statement added that the report indicated Adebayo never made official complaints of sexual harassment against Prof. Fasina, which confirming the earlier investigation by the Nigeria Police.

The council also condemned the audio recordings of the VC by Mrs. Adebayo without his consent, saying that it was against established laws and regulations of the university.

She was directed to write an apology letter to the council within the next seven days and further warned from bringing the name of the university into disrepute.

Alleged sexual harassment: Protesters demand suspension of FUOYE VC

A group of protesters have converged on the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, calling for the suspension of Professor Abayomi Fasina as Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), to allow proper investigation into sexual harassment allegation.

Protesters armed with placards-bearing slogans such as ‘Ekiti Deserves Better’ and ‘Protect Our Women,’ argued that the Vice-Chancellor cannot remain in office while facing investigation for sexual harassment allegations.

The embattled VC has been under investigations over allegations made in a leaked voice note regarding a sexual harassment case against one of his married subordinates.

Speaking to journalists after submitting a petition to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the leader of the protesters under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption, Victor Adetola, said suspending the VC would give room for thorough investigations into the matter.

Adetola said: “We have looked at the developing story that has been going on in that university as an organisation that is fronting for the welfare of Nigerian students and the community or the educational community generally.

“The issue will be festering if there is no thorough investigation, and we need that place to be sanitised. Honestly, currently there is a disciplinary action investigation that is going on that was first given a three-week ultimatum.

“After that, they requested for another three weeks ultimatum, even inclusive of the governing council. And for the past six months, nothing has been done. We see that a lot of undiagnosed, a lot of corruption has been festering.

“In fact, one of the most critical issues happening is the sexual harassment that has happened to one of the married assistant directors in that school.

“Specifically, it’s necessary that the leader of the university steps down first, or the governing council relieves him of that position first, so that independent investigation can be carried out on all the petitions that we have written.”

  • FUOYE students, group fault SSANU’s call for suspension of VC

FUOYE students, group fault SSANU’s call for suspension of VC

Students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State have faulted the recent call by the National Women Committee of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) for the sack of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.

The students, during a solidarity protest yesterday at the university campus, warned the SSANU women wing not to allow itself to be  used in the hands of ‘enemies of the university’, who do not mean well for the institution.

The SSANU Women had during a news conference held in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, called for the suspension of Prof Fasina over an allegation of sexual harassment levelled by a senior staff member of the university, Mrs Folasade Adebayo.

But, reacting yesterday, the Students’ Union Government Vice-President, Comrade Olaniyan Eniola, said there was no logic in the call for the suspension of the VC when investigation was ongoing on the issue.

Eniola alleged that the attack on the VC was orchestrated by some elements with vested interest to disrupt the university’s peaceful ambience and its unparalleled progress through campaign of calumny against Prof. Fasina.

He said: “We are appalled by the disgraceful actions of a so-called union body, the SSANU National Women’s Committee, led by Mrs Ijeoma Kalu, which is demanding the suspension of our highly respected Vice Chancellor over a completely unfounded allegation.

“It is disappointing that these women, who should be expected to uphold truth and integrity, have chosen instead to spread falsehood and engage in media blackmail. We were shocked to read how they publicly disgraced themselves, calling for the removal of our beloved VC without any factual basis.

“The Vice Chancellor has already clarified that Mrs Adebayo, in her official petition to the Governing Council, never mentioned sexual harassment. Even in her statements before the Nigerian Police, which investigated the matter, there was no mention of sexual harassment.

So where did the SSANU Women’s Committee fabricate this claim from? On what basis are they demanding his suspension? This is clearly a politically-motivated smear campaign, which is doomed to fail.”

Eniola warned SSANU and its affiliates to desist from further interference, urging them to allow the university’s governing council to complete its investigation without external pressures.

He added: “It is unfortunate that rather than focusing on the incredible progress FUOYE has made under this administration, some individuals are spreading baseless and damaging narratives. We strongly caution against the interference of uninvited groups seeking to disrupt the university’s stability.

“This issue must be handled legally and fairly, without external manipulations aimed at tarnishing the university’s reputation.

“FUOYE stands as a beacon of excellence in Nigeria’s educational landscape, and its integrity must be protected at all costs. We trust that the truth will prevail and that this great university’s dignity, integrity and reputation will remain untarnished.”

He reaffirmed the students’ solidarity with the Vice Chancellor, stating that they would resist any attempt to derail the institution’s progress.

In a similar development, the Campaign for Justice and Fair Play has raised the alarm over alleged plot by the National Women Committee of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities to destabilise the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

The group’s Chairman, Chief  Calistus Jemade, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday said the alleged plot was driven by vested interests threatened by the unparalleled achievements of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fasina.

Jemade alleged that the SSANU Women Committee had been orchestrating a campaign to unseat Professor Fasina over an unsubstantiated allegation of sexual harassment made by a university staff member, Folashade Adebayo.

He described the plot as a “calculated political attack” purposefully designed to discredit the VC and undermine his leadership, saying “the sponsors of this campaign are not seeking justice but are actively working to destabilise the university”.

He called on the institution’s Chairman of the Governing Council to take decisive action and expedite ongoing probe into the allegation, warning that allowing the plot to succeed could jeopardise the stability and future of FUOYE.

This is a calculated political attack designed to discredit a leader who has worked tirelessly to improve FUOYE. These individuals, motivated by self-interest, are determined to take control of the university’s leadership at any cost.

“We urge the FUOYE’s Senate, alumni, staff and students  to be vigilant and resist any attempt to sow discord and destabilise the institution.

“Professor Fasina is a proven reformer, a strong advocate for workers welfare, and a high-achieving administrator. Any attempt to undermine his leadership should be strongly opposed by all who value the progress of this institution”, he added.

Students of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), have condemned the recent call by the National Women Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) for the removal of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.

During a solidarity protest on Wednesday at the university campus, the students warned the SSANU women’s wing against being used by what they described as “enemies of the university” who do not have the institution’s best interests at heart.

The SSANU Women Committee had, during a press conference in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, demanded Prof. Fasina’s suspension over an allegation of sexual harassment made by a senior staff member, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo.

However, speaking on Wednesday, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Vice President, Comrade Olaniyan Eniola, dismissed the call for suspension as illogical, noting that an investigation into the allegation was still ongoing.

Eniola further alleged that the demand for the VC’s removal was a calculated attempt by certain individuals with vested interests to disrupt the university’s peaceful environment and progress through a smear campaign against Prof. Fasina.

He said, “We are appalled by the disgraceful actions of a so-called union body, the SSANU National Women’s Committee, led by Mrs Ijeoma Kalu, which is demanding the suspension of our highly respected Vice-Chancellor over a completely unfounded allegation.

Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) said its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, has nothing to do with the recent arrest of the General Manager of Our People’s FM, Dr. Agbeleoba Opeyemi.

Agbeleoba, the younger brother of Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, a FUOYE worker, who has accused Prof Fasina of sexual harassment, was reportedly arrested by the operatives of Department of State Security (DSS) under unclear circumstances.

Dr. Agbeleoba, the younger brother of Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, a FUOYE staff, who has accused Prof Fasina of sexual harassment, was reportedly arrested by the operatives of Department of State Security under unclear circumstances.

Social media reports laimed that the VC orchestrated the arrest to suppress alleged audio recording that purportedly implicated him in the harassment case.

But, the FUOYE’s Registrar, Mr. Mufutau Ibrahim in a statement, described the allegations as “false and misleading, urging the public to discountenance the claim aimed at maligning the VC’s hard earned reputation and integrity.
The statement reads: “Prof. Fasina has no involvement in the alleged arrest of Dr. Agbeleoba Samuel Opeyemi. The claims linking him to this matter are both shocking and baseless. This appears to be yet another attempt by individuals seeking to tarnish his reputation by leveraging the ongoing media campaign against him.”

“The assertion that the Vice-Chancellor ordered Agbeleoba’s arrest is pure falsehood—just as the allegations of sexual harassment are also unfounded. We urge the public to disregard these false reports.”

The university called on journalists and media outlets to verify facts before disseminating reports to avoid legal consequences.

“Spreading unverified information can lead to libel suits. Anyone genuinely interested in the facts regarding Agbeleoba’s arrest should direct their inquiries to the DSS,” it added.

The institution reaffirmed its unalloyed commitment to upholding integrity and due process, warning against deliberate misinformation aimed at damaging its reputations.

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, fairness, and accountability as the institution’s Governing Council appointed a nine-member committee to thoroughly investigate allegations of sexual harassment and victimisation involving the institution’s vice-chancellor, Abayomi Fasina.

In a statement released by Folusho Ogunmodede, FUOYE’s public relations officer, the council has given the committee three weeks to complete its investigation, with a clear set of guidelines to follow.

Ogunmodede said: “The investigation is progressing as planned, with all relevant parties, including union representatives, invited to ensure a fair and transparent process. The Governing Council, under the leadership of Chairman Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, OFR, CON, SAN, remains unwavering in its zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment and misconduct.

FUOYE students demand fair probe into sexual harassment, extortion allegations against VC

Amid allegations of sexual harassment and extortion against the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, students of the institution have called for an impartial investigation by the panel set up to examine the claims.

The allegations were raised by the institution’s Deputy Director of Works and Services, Folashade Adebayo, prompting the Governing Council, led by Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, to establish an investigative panel.

Additionally, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has launched a separate probe following a petition from a civil society organization.

Reacting to the controversy, the university’s student leaders expressed shock over the allegations against Prof. Fasina, describing him as someone who strongly opposes any form of harassment.

The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Mary Olorunshola, in a statement issued in Osogbo on Wednesday, expressed the union’s support for the Governing Council’s decision to investigate the matter.

“The establishment of the investigative panel demonstrates FUOYE’s commitment to upholding its core values and ensuring fairness in resolving internal disputes,” the union stated.

The students called for transparency in the investigation, emphasizing the need for justice to prevail, regardless of the outcome.

She said: “We fully support a thorough and unbiased investigation. We expressed confidence in the committee, formed by the Governing Council under the chairmanship of Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, to ensure equitable hearings and carefully examine all allegations.

“Prof. Fasina has been a very responsive and responsible leader and father to the students and has always frowned on any form of assault. Which made these allegations come to us as a shock.”

“Moreover, in the last four years of Prof. Fasina’s leadership, he has been a father figure who does everything under the law to protect the students against sexual harassment, sex-for-grade, sex-for-mark, intimidation, and oppression.

She stressed: “It is quite disheartening that people are not talking about the significant development FUOYE has witnessed under his leadership, rather unhealthy news clashes have been spread all over the internet.”

Olorunshola warned: “We strongly advise against the interference of uninvited bodies by intrusion with content and distractions that could disturb the investigation processes, and that could further tarnish the image of the university as this would not be taken with levity, and we await the report of the governing council committee investigating the case.”

  • NANS threatens to shut FUOYE over VC’s alleged sexual harassment, extortion

NANS threatens to shut FUOYE over VC’s alleged sexual harassment, extortion

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to shut the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) over allegation of sexual harassment and extortion against the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.

Fasina was said to have been making inappropriate and emotional advances towards Engr. Folasade Adebayo, a married deputy director in the university’s Directorate of Works and Services.

But the law firm of Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa and Co, lawyers to Fasina, described the allegation against the VC as baseless, emphasising on need to address the unsubstantiated accusations and provide accurate information, refuting the false narratives.

A statement by NANS Senate President, Com. Akinteye Babatunde threatened if the Governing Council of the institution fails to suspend the VC before the upcoming convocation of the university, NANS will take decisive and lawful action by mobilising students nationwide to shut down FUOYE on convocation day to demand accountability.

According to him, the alleged conduct was reprehensible and violates ethical standards expected of someone occupying such a high position of trust and authority in an academic institution.

He said: “This is not a threat but a solemn commitment to defending the rights and dignity of Nigerian students and ensuring that our institutions are governed with transparency, accountability, and fairness. FUOYE deserves better. Nigerian students deserve better.

“We therefore strongly urge the Governing Council of FUOYE to do the needful, not only to salvage the institution’s reputation but also to restore confidence in the integrity of academic leadership in Nigeria. The time to act is now.

“We are appalled by the recent revelations implicating the VC, as the moral compass of any institution, a Vice-Chancellor must embody the values of integrity, discipline, and respect. However, the actions alleged against Professor Fasina severely undermine the sanctity of the office he holds and bring disrepute to FUOYE as a center of learning.

“It is deeply troubling that the leader of an institution tasked with nurturing and protecting its students and staff could be at the center of such a scandal. This incident, if left unaddressed, sets a dangerous precedent and threatens to erode the trust that students, staff, and stakeholders have in the university’s leadership.

“We call on the Governing Council of FUOYE to act decisively and immediately suspend Professor Fasina to allow for a transparent, unbiased, and thorough investigation into the allegations. This suspension is critical to ensure that the investigation is not hindered by undue influence or interference.

“We further urge the council to ensure that all investigative processes prioritize justice and fairness, with adequate protection for the victim and whistleblowers involved in this case.

“Beyond the issue of sexual harassment, the administration of Professor Fasina has been plagued by numerous controversies that raise serious questions about his leadership. Among these is the extortion of students through the university’s part-time program.

“It is disheartening to note that students who have met the requirements for admission into regular programs are being systematically denied admission and coerced into part-time programs solely for financial exploitation. This blatant abuse of power and commercialization of education is a direct assault on the rights of students to affordable and accessible education.

“Professor Fasina’s tenure has been riddled with multiple allegations of financial misconduct and administrative malpractice. Such consistent controversies reflect a leadership that prioritizes personal and financial gain over the welfare of students, staff, and the institution at large.”

The Governing Council of the University in a statement on Friday by the Registrar and Secretary of the Council, Mufutau Ibrahim has approved setting up of a nine-member committee to investigate allegation.

The Registrar said the Committee was directed to conduct comprehensive investigation and uncover the truth behind the allegations, saying the Committee is expected to get to the root of the matter and present its findings to the Council within the stipulated time.

But the Civil Society Coalition on the Leadership of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has distanced the VC from the alleged committal of sexual harassment and staff victimization.

The coalition, led by Com. Shuaib Abdulkadir at a press conference held in Abuja, faulted claims by members of the FUOYE Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) that Fasina indulges in administrative recklessness and financial impropriety.

The coalition described the allegations as baseless, politically motivated, and designed to tarnish the reputation of a leader whose impact speaks volumes.

A statement signed by Oluwatosin Adesioye, Esq on behalf of Adegboruwa law firm emphasised the need to address the unsubstantiated accusations and provide accurate information, refuting the false narratives.

The statement reads: “We act as solicitors to the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (the Vice-Chancellor) in relation to certain online publications on certain phantom allegations without proof. The publications purport to relay allegations of sexual harassment, victimisation, abuse of office, financial mismanagement and non-compliance with university service schemes, all levelled against the Vice-Chancellor by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University, Oye-Ekiti branch (SSANU-FUOYE Branch) and some other disgruntled persons. As retained Solicitors to the Vice-Chancellor, we have found it imperative to put the facts straight while rebutting the criminal allegations and imputations directed at the Vice-Chancellor.

“Beginning with the headliner – “…Sexual Harassment, Victimisation Allegations Against Vice-Chancellor,” the narrative that Engr. Folasade O. Adebayo, a Deputy Director, Works and Service Unit of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (the Institution), was subjected to harassment and later victimization after resisting the advances from the Vice-Chancellor is entirely false and unfounded as such weighty and criminal allegations have been referred and reported to the Nigeria Police Force since year 2023.

“Under and by virtue of section 4 of the Nigeria Police Establishment Act, 2020, it is the police that is empowered with statutory authority to investigate and prosecute all criminal acts of alleged sexual harassment.

“We wish to state for the record that the Nigeria Police carried out its investigations of the allegations of alleged sexual harassment and victimisation of Engr. Folasade O. Adebayo, abuse of office and official corruption, directed at the Vice-Chancellor to which a final and conclusive investigative report absolving the Vice-Chancellor has been released.

“In the course of the police investigation, it was settled unequivocally that there are no evidence of infractions by the Vice-Chancellor (and his management team) on fraud, fraudulent practices, official corruption, inflation of contract amongst other crimes alleged in the petition made against the Vice-Chancellor. As a matter of fact, Engr. Folasade O. Adebayo expressly and voluntarily concurred in writing to the ABSENCE of any sexual harassment or advances by the Vice- Chancellor against her person.

“One then wonders what other statutory/enforcement role should be carried further in respect of the same allegations of sexual harassment and victimization under reference, when the Nigeria Police Force, as statutorily mandated under Section 4 of the Police Act 2020 in carrying out its duties to prevent and detect crimes, has fulfilled the constitutional duties and covered the field as required by law over the now spent allegations and claims under reference.

“This also extends to the professed allegation of abuse of office, financial mismanagement and failure to comply with university service schemes all of which have previously been submitted to the office of the Pro-Chancellor of the Institution for investigation to which the Vice-Chancellor has not been found wanting in carrying out his duties, a confirmation of the Vice-Chancellor’s adherence to the principles of good governance and due process.

“Hence, these false accusations that have already been independently reviewed by the institution’s Governing Council, headed by the erstwhile Pro-Chancellor, Engr. Kayode Ojo, have strangely resurfaced following the recent appointment of a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institution. The fact therefore remains that the instant resort to misleading narratives now been peddled by Saharah Reporters, is a further revelation of the outright desperation by some disgruntled elements within the SSANU-FUOYE Branch to coerce and unjustly exploit the Vice Chancellor into yielding to their selfish schemes and ambitions all to the detriment of the Institution.

“It is regrettable that despite the issuance of a clean bill of health to the Vice-Chancellor confirming the latter has acted in accordance with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in respect of the management of the Institution, the same complainant has approached Sahara Reporters to publish these serious allegations without first reaching out to the Vice-Chancellor or the University’s management for any clarification or position.

“This breach of journalistic ethics demonstrates a clear intent to ridicule and tarnish the Vice – Chancellor’s impeccable reputation.

“Under section 22 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) true and responsible journalism mandates fairness, accuracy and balance. Sadly, the publication under reference falls short of these standards, contributing to the spread of falsehoods and misinformation, all of which we seek to correct with this Rejoinder.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has demonstrated unwavering commitment, through transparency and accountability to the growth and success of the Institution, which has led to University being amongst the top sought-after tertiary institutions in Nigeria by candidates and their parents.

“These malicious attacks will however not deter him from his responsibilities to pilot the Institution even to greater heights. In the mean, we shall continue to advise the Vice – Chancellor while awaiting further instruction in pursuing his right and integrity.”

FUOYE secures NUC approval for 22 new programmes under Fasina

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 22 new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

The announcement follows determined efforts by the management team led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, to broaden the university’s academic offerings.

This included a formal invitation extended to the NUC to assess existing facilities in preparation for the swift take-off of the programmes.
