    Press Release

The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, to address concerns raised by a recent publication issued by Mr. Oluwaseun Benjamin Faleye and Mrs. Ayomikun Oluwaseun Aluko, leaders of the FUOYE chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

This was contained in a statement released by the Registrar and Secretary of the University, Mufutau A. Ibrahim.

The statement reads: “The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti at its 5™ Emergency
“Meeting held on Wednesday, 4″ December, 2024, considered the Report of the purported publication issued by Mr. Oluwaseun Benjamin Faleye and Mrs Ayomikun Oluwaseun Aluko (Chairman and Secretary of FUOYE SSANU respectively).

“Council was embarrassed by the fact that SSANU Leadership did not exhaust the internal formal mechanisms of the University, especially the Council, in reporting the alleged infractions contained in their Press Release before its copious engagement of the media, an act capable of de-marketing the highly recognised institution.

“The Governing Council deliberated on the issues and decided to set up an Investigative Committee to look into the matter. The Committee will commence their assignment immediately.

“The Governing Council wishes to implore all stakeholders to, therefore, remain calm while the matter is being resolved.”

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media Matters to Fasina, Dr Wole Balogun, the allegations, disseminated through sensational media publications, were condemned as damaging and unprofessional.

Babasola expressed confidence in Professor Fasina’s ability to address the issue promptly, stating: “My members and I are neither involved in nor supportive of the unfounded allegations against the Vice-Chancellor. As union leaders, our primary responsibility is to safeguard the welfare of our members while working collaboratively with university management to foster progress.”

    • Institution: detractors trying to smear varsity image

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, has denied claims that several acts of misconduct were allegedly perpetrated during tenure of erstwhile Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun.

A statement by  Dr. Wole Balogun, the Special Adviser on Media to the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, noted that some unscrupulous elements had taken to the social media to attack the university following a government panel report.

He said it was imperative to set the records straight.

He noted that the report entitled: “Panel Report on Nigerian Federal University Oye-Ekiti Uncovers Alleged Mismanagement”,  is full of  inaccurate and deliberate misrepresentations of what is contained in the government report on FUOYE between 2016 and 2021.

He said: “What is curious on this strange development about the government panel report is the fact that while there are several  public varsities in Nigeria,  it gave findings about, FUOYE has arguably been the only university the enemies of progress picked for media attack and brazen yellow journalism.

“The higher the university climbs the ladder of greatness, the more her enemies are hurt and spread bile against her.”

He described the said media reports on allegations of victimisation of staff members, naming Dr. Akinyemi Omonijo, Dr. Niyi Akingbe, and Dr Olugbenga E. Adeyemi as victims, as false and  unsubstantiated, adding that claims of suspension and dismissal of staff without recourse to the laid down disciplinary procedures in the conditions of service were grossly baseless and unfounded.

Wole said contrary to falsehood sold to the public about the procedure followed by the Prof. Soremekun-led management in appointing Prof. Tajudeen Opoola and Mr. Godwin  Elabor, the updated records of the university validate their appointments then and now.

According to him, there were giant strides of excellence achieved  by the Prof. Soremekun-led administration, which were possible with the support given by the incumbent VC who was Soremekun’s deputy.

The statement said: “For the records, FUOYE had five faculties offering 30 academic programmes in 2016 when Soremekun came on board.

FUOYE Senate passes confidence vote in VC

The Senate of Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, rose from its 70th meeting yesterday and passed a vote of confidence in the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi  Fasina.

It condemned Senior Staff Association of Nigeria’s (SSAN’s) “baseless, unfounded and malicious” allegations of misconduct against the Vice Chancellor.

Also, the Alumni Association of  Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) rose in defence of Prof. Fasina over allegations bordering on sexual harassment, intimidation and financial mismanagement being touted by SSANU FUOYE branch. Besides, other groups- Coalition of Staff Unions, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Congress of Nigerian Academic (CONUA), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) rallied support for the Vice Chancellor, asking SSANU to stop blackmailing Prof. Fasina and the university.

In a statement by the university spokesman, Mr. Foluso Ogunmodede, the unions were unanimous that SSANU’s allegations against Prof. Fasina were not only spurious, but also unfounded, malicious and actionable, as the VC, who had worked in the last four years to put the university on a global map, following his giant infrastructural and academic strives, did not deserve such allegations.

The allegations, they said, were not only baseless, but also an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the “working Vice Chancellor.”

To the alumni, according to its President, Bishop Tope Arogundade, SSANU’s allegations as signed by its Chairman, Mr. Benjamin Faleye and Secretary, Ayomikun Aluko, were reckless and driven by “personal grievances”, adding that they had no place “in a new FUOYE” as exemplified in the leadership of Prof. Fasina.

Arogundade said: “Alumni Association stands strong with Prof. Fasina, rejects baseless allegations. We also wish to formally address the recent malicious and concocted allegations made by SSANU, FUOYE branch against our esteemed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fasina.

“These allegations are being touted by a group of individuals, who have not seen the good work ongoing on campus through the Vice Chancellor.

“It is disheartening that these groups of individuals, driven by personal preference, have chosen the path of ignominy by attempting to tarnish the reputation of a leader, who has done so much to transform the university into a premier institution of higher learning.

“We call on the university Governing Council, Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to reject these baseless accusations and keep supporting Prof. Fasina as he leads FUOYE towards ever-green success.”

Also, NASU Chairman, Dr. Ademola Akinsorotan, CONUA Coordinator, including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), described SSANU’s allegations as a coordinated effort by detractors to discredit Prof. Fasina ahead of 2025 Vice-Chancellorship race.

“This campaign of calumny against Prof. Fasina will fail,” they said.

SSANU, NASU strike: FUOYE, union trade blames over death of asthmatic student

The management of the Federal University at Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has blamed the death of a student of the institution on the insensitivity of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) who are currently on strike.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, said the student was asthmatic and could not get treatment due to the ongoing strike that led to the closure of the university’s health centre.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, Fasina, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Tajudeen Opoola, alleged that some hoodlums invaded FUOYE in cohort with SSANU members and shut down the institution based on what he called false information given to the national body.

The vice chancellor warned that FUOYE management would no longer allow a breakdown of law and order in the university under the guise of a strike.

He said: “We lost a student this morning in FUOYE. He had asthma. He could not be taken to our clinic because the facility is under lock and key.

“It is true that students are on vacation but not all of them are living on campus. It would have been easier for the student to be taken to our clinic for treatment, but our university gate is locked.

“This morning, I was at the Ekiti State University (EKSU). The administrative block is wide open. Total strike is not going on in EKSU. But the same leadership of EKSU SSANU went on air yesterday (Tuesday) to incite the public and even led some hoodlums to invade our school, based on a false narrative he was fed with by Chairman FUOYE SSANU.

“Our own chairman was the one who gave false information to the National President (of SSANU). He gave the impression that he had been beaten and harassed. The national president allegedly directed that the leadership of their union in Ondo, Osun, and Kwara states should proceed to FUOYE to rescue the (branch) chairman.

“It is that impunity that the EKSU chairperson used. But we hope he won’t misuse the immunity.”

Fasina, who said the law would deal with the situation appropriately, added: “The university is not going to fold its arm and allow anybody in whatever name or allow any union to come and occupy our place. We have a way of dealing with such. This is Nigeria. Nobody is above the law.”

But SSANU Chairman at FUOYE, Ben Faleye, who said the union duly notified the university of the seven-day warning strike, queried: “Is FUOYE the only federal university that is observing the seven-day warning strike? There are many schools that are under lock and key.”

Reacting to the allegation that the SSANU strike caused the student’s death, the union leader said: “Before now, there was a notice of the strike. I have a memo that the university issued prior to the notice that we would be embarking on seven days’ warning strike that directed the students to vacate the hostels to avoid something of such.”

Faleye denied the allegation that the union incited or led hoodlums to invade FUOYE.

He challenged the university’s management to prove its allegation, saying it was the management that ambushed its monitoring team.
