What Kwankwaso must do before joining APC -Ganduje

Immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, insisted that the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, must follow due process if he wishes to return to the ruling party.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa on Friday, Ganduje made it clear that the party has no objection to the reported move by Kwankwaso to join APC.

The immediate past Kano Governor was responding to Kwankwaso’s reported moves and demands on a possible return and NNPP’s merger with the APC.

Ganduje was Kwankwaso’s Deputy before winning gubernatorial election in 2015 and reelection in 2019, bowing out in May 2023.

However, Ganduje, emphasised that his predecessor and former benefactor (Kwankwaso), who later had frosty ties with him and left the APC, must accept certain conditions before rejoining the party.

Fielding questions from BBC Hausa on Friday, Ganduje stated that the APC operates by rules and guidelines, and Kwankwaso must comply with them before being admitted.

Kwankwaso recently told Hon. Buhari Bakwana, a former Adviser on Political Affairs to Dr. Ganduje and APC grassroots members from the 44 local government areas of Kano State that “We are ready to join APC under strong conditions and promises. We will not allow anyone to use us and later dump us.”

Kwankwaso added: “Discussions about a merger or return to APC must spell out tangible benefits for my party (NNPP).”

In his interview with BBC, Ganduje further stated: “We’ve heard about Kwankwaso’s return plans. In democracy, the vote of a thief and that of a cleric carry equal weight. So, we won’t shut our doors to anyone.

“Anyone who wants to join is welcome, but they must follow due process. We have rules and a constitution. If they return, we’ll welcome them, but we will name it for what it is: they’ve vomited and now they’re licking it back.”

Barau, Ganduje, others step up plan to displace NNPP in Kano

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State yesterday resolved to mobilise support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The leaders – former National Chairman Umar Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Senator Kabiru Gaya, former Secretary to Government Suleiman Bichi – also vowed to reclaim the governorship from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The party stalwarts, who converged on Transcrop Hilton Hotel in Abuja, noted that President Tinubu has not disappointed the ruling party, Kano State and the country.

Also at the brainstorming session that lasted for two hours were the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation,  Abubakar Kabiru Abubakar, Kano APC Chairman Idris Abubakar, Senator Kawu Sulaiman, Senator Bashir Lado, and state and federal lawmakers.

Ganduje told reporters that the meeting assessed the party’s prospects in the state and reaffirmed support for the President’s second term aspiration.

He said the gathering attested to the fact that  the party is intact and prepared to reclaim Kano from the NNPP.

Ganduje stressed: “We are here to examine the progress, the successes that we have achieved in our great party in Kano State. We are also here to assure Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that our party in  Kano State is solidly behind him.

“We appreciate his policy reforms. We appreciate the good work that he is doing for the country. We appreciate the good work he is doing for Kano State. And we appreciate all the appointments that he has made from Kano State.”

Ganduje, who is a former governor of Kano State, said despite the party’s narrow loss in 2023 in the state, it is solid and attracting more members from other political parties due to the people-oriented policies and programmes of the President in the last two and half years.

He said: “Our party has remained solid. And because of the good policies of Mr. President, and also because of our political dexterity in the state, we are able to attract many important politicians from other political parties that have come into our own party.

“In particular, Senator Kawu joined the party. We have members of the House of Representatives. We have the former Speaker of Kano State, Hon. Kabiru Ruru, who has joined our party. We have Hon. Abdullahi Saini Rogo, who has joined our party.

“We have many members of the House of Assembly who have joined our party. We have former secretary to the present government in Kano State who have left the party, NNPP, and have joined our party. We have some commissioners who left the present government and now they have joined our party.

“We have resolved that we will continue to work very hard to ensure that we succeed in the next governorship  election in Kano State.”

Echoing Ganduje, Barau said after properly disecting the political development in the state and the country at large, the leaders agreed that the state and indeed, the entire Northern Nigeria have benefited immensely from the President Tinubu-led administration.

He said: “We have invited critical stakeholders in order to examine the state of our state in terms of our party and the nation at large. We are able to discover the fact that the President and Commander-in-Chief, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has done very well for our state and indeed, the entire nation.

“We discovered several projects that have been implemented. Others are ongoing in our state and indeed, the entire northern part of this country. We also discovered that so many people have been appointed to various offices in our state and indeed, the entire nation, the entire northern part of Nigeria.

“We also understand the fact that our party is now growing from strength to strength because of several interventions made by Mr. President towards alleviating the sufferings of our people.”

Barau added: “We are solely behind him, just as the former National Chairman said. We are behind him. We are solidly behind him because he loves us. We have never asked for anything from him that he has not done for us. He has established several things for us, several institutions of higher learning, several development projects, and so on and so forth.

“We are behind him and we have urged our people, our party, faithful, that everybody, all the strategic stakeholders that are here, that they should go back home and continue to support, to tell their people to continue to support Mr. President, to continue to support APC and to continue to pray for our nation, to continue to pray for our president so that he will achieve his aim of bringing prosperity to our nation.”

The Chairman House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar, said the stakeholders have resolved to deliver more than the 600,000 votes in 2023 to President Tinubu in 2027.

Highlighting the landmark projects of the president in the state, the lawmaker said: “We note that the President has done extremely well in Kano State in terms of critical projects such as roads. The road from Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano is almost completed. Kano, Maiduguri Sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 almost completed. Kano/Katsina project is almost completed.

“In the next one to two months, Mr. President will come to Kano to lay foundation for the light rail project in Kano State. That project will cost more than one billion US dollars and of course, it is going to be one of the most important projects in Northern Nigeria.”

He added: “So, for someone to say, Mr. President is not interested in the North or in Kano State is all politics. Kano State in 2027 will come all out and vote the President and the APC governor, Isha Allah, as well as senators in the three central districts and members of the House of Representatives.”

Dangote, Jibrin, Shekarau, Ganduje, others to address Kano’s socio-economic problems

Kano elders and leading personalities across socio, economic, religious and political spheres have formed a united front to address socio-economic challenges confronting the state.

The elders and leaders, who met under the aegis of Kano State Elders Advisory Council with coordination from the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Kano State Chapter, lamented the ugly trend of social vices within the state and around the north and called for collective efforts to rid the state of crimes.

They called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to rebuild values of honesty, respect, tolerance, hard work and decency within the society, noting that the menace of drug abuse, robberies and indecent behaviours was due to collapse of family values.

A 34-member committee was formed by the meeting to brainstorm on the objectives, galvanise members of the elders’ council and other stakeholders, and interface with relevant state and national governments’ officials towards resolution of identified challenges.

In his welcome address, ACF Kano Chairman, Dr Faruk Umar said the elders’ council would serve as an unbiased, non-partisan advisory body by making useful contributions to the running of the affairs of the state.

According to him, the elders’ council would look into challenges and problems and suggest solutions to the policy makers.

He pointed out that problems like drug abuse, phone snatching, human rights abuses, and child trafficking would receive urgent attention.

“The council comprises of people with different expertise and it is thus qualified as a technical committee on various issues. It is like guiding council for the state and governance.

He noted that initiatives such as AKHUWAT Initiatives by the ACF were meant to address root causes of many problems, while commending key contributors for the AKHUWAT project funds.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, commended ACF Kano and the elders for forging a common front irrespective of socio-political differences.

He pledged to support the efforts of the committee in addressing pressing issues of poverty, unemployment and other socio-economic problems confronting the state.

He pointed out that despite the economic challenges, the federal government is doing everything possible to address macroeconomic problems, which will set strong basis for sustainable developments across the country.

He called on all northern elders to unite and work together for regional development.

President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, in a letter of endorsement, expressed his “full endorsement” and confidence in the ability of the elders’ council to strengthen governance within the state by providing wise counsel to stakeholders in Kano and beyond.

He commended the profound leadership and commitment of the Dr Faruk Umar-led ACF Kano, noting that such leadership and commitment have continued to inspire progress and unity across the nation.

According to him, the visionary resolutions of the elders were not only timely but also essential to restoring principled leadership and moral guardianship in the affairs of the society.

Dangote, Africa’s richest man, said he was ready to “collaborate as applicable to advance the elders’ council objectives.

“I look forward to positive updates on the council’s progress and stand ready to assist in any way possible,” Dangote stated.

Former Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau said it was the absence of an initiative like the elders’ council that contributed to the menace of hooliganism and robbery.

He said he had had discussions with other political leaders to work for Kano and put Kano first above any political interest.

He noted that with the careful selection of the advisory council and committee members, the root causes of the problems would be addressed, urging community leaders to show care and support for all members of the society.

Former Governor of Kano State and immediate past chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje stressed the importance of cooperation, urging all elders to join hands in moving Kano forward.

Ganduje, who was represented by former Secretary to the Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, promised to support the council in achieving its objectives.

Chairman and Chief Executive, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA,) Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), emphasised the importance of cooperation in the fight against drug abuse.

According to him, the fight against societal vices such as drug abuse cannot be done alone, but through joint efforts by stakeholders like ACF, government and traditional rulers among others.

Marwa, who was represented at the meeting by the NDLEA Director of Administration and Establishment , Alhaji Lawan Hamisu , decried the high level of drug abuse in Kano and underscored the need for immediate efforts to address this ugly trend.

Prof. Galadanchi said the diverse problems confronting Kano such as social fragmentation, drugs abuse, unemployment, political instability, poverty, especially in the middle and lower classes and security challenges could only be addressed by restoring long-held values and ethical reorientation.

He cited various Qur’anic verses and prophetic traditions that encouraging unity and helping each other as a way to stay strong in daily life.

He said virtues as love for one another, willingness to support others, forgiveness and due respect to all individuals irrespective of status help to build social cohesion.

He stressed that unity of purpose would help to catalyse the much-needed human and material resources needed to confront any problem.

National Chairman, Board of Trustees, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF),  Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu commended the elders for their contributions to the development and growth of the Arewa community.

He pointed out that the serious issue of insecurity in the North-West can only be resolved by unity and collective commitment by all stakeholders.

He also noted the need for family reorientation as many crimes were as results of breakdown in family values and home training.

Alhaji A A Rano welcomed the elders’ council initiative noting the need for traditional elders that could mobilise people to address common problems.

He expressed his readiness to support all efforts by ACF Kano and the elders’ council in eliminating social vices bedeviling the state, especially in the area of poverty alleviation and employment generation.

Rano, who had earlier donated N30 million to the AKHUWAT Initiatives, made additional donation of N20 million to help small business owners improve productivity.

Amb. Mukhtar Gashash said the cause of many problems was the disintegration of community bond, especially with people placing money as the sole object of importance rather than cultural values of honesty, brotherliness and hardwork.

Inaugurating the committee yesterady at the Cabinet Office, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruq Ibrahim, who stood in for the governor, said the “investigation is imperative to hold immediate past administration accountable.”

Yusuf insisted his administration has the responsibility to protect critical infrastructure of the state illegally auctioned for selfish interest.

Tinubu directed me to work with Ganduje for APC’s progress – Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructed him to collaborate closely with former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to strengthen the party.

Yilwatda made this known on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving Ganduje, who paid him a condolence visit following the death of his mother, Madam Lydia Yilwatda.

He acknowledged Ganduje’s political experience, stating it would be invaluable as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

“Your Excellency, I will need to tap from your experience; I will need your guidance as I learn the curves,” Yilwatda said.

He added, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked me to work with you and reach out to you for partnership. I told him I would regard you as a chairman in partnership with me—you remain the co-chairman of the APC.”

“I am only a coordinator. My duty is simply to coordinate the membership of this party. But the party belongs to all of us.

“We are all collective leaders of the party. Moreover, by experience and by virtue of politics, you have been there long before me. Since the time of the NPN, you have been part of the political scene.

“At that time, I was only in primary school. I recall that we used to see Governor Rimi come to Jos in the 70s and 80s to visit Solomon Lar. One day, he came to commission a project at my school. I was just in Form 2, waving at them along with my classmates — I never knew what politics truly meant. By then, people like you had already learned the ropes of politics, while we didn’t even know the definition of politics.

“So I need your experience. I need your guidance. The learning curve still rests with you.

“I will depend heavily on your experience, your connections, and your contacts to ensure we solidify this party and build it together so that we can win more elections.”

He then assured his predecessor that his doors would be open to the former Kano State governor. “My doors are open, the office is open, the partnership remains open, and the friendship remains open. So never lock your door against me—and I know you will not—because we have worked together long before this time,” Yilwatda appealed to Ganduje.

Earlier, Ganduje said his relationship with the new national chairman should be a good example between a successor and predecessor.

He said, “One important thing is that the problem between successor and his predecessor is one of the issues that APC has solved. So in order to show examples, I am sure you know it that since 1999 the problem between former Governors and their successors has always been an issue up till now in many states of the federation.

“Not only in governorship , but in other positions, especially in politics. So our relationship is the beginning to solve that kind of problem. Not only in APC but in the whole atmosphere of democracy. I have to congratulate you on this new appointment.”

    • All party organs activated

Northcentral geopolitical zone, which has been agitating for the chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC), may have its wish today, it was learnt last night.

In the APC zoning arrangement, Northcentral was allotted the chairmanship seat, which was occupied by Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who led the party to the 2023 presidential election victory.

But following his resignation in August 2023, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje from the Northwest took over.

With his exit on June 27 on health grounds, the Northcentral resumed the agitation.

It was learnt that picking a new chairman from the zone might have been agreed upon at the various meetings held by the party’s organs between Tuesday and last night.

A minister is believed to be on top of the shortlist.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda was widely touted for the position, but it could not be confirmed.

Prof. Yilwatda was the APC governorship candidate in Plateau State during the 2023 election.

An engineer and academic, he was the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Benue State between July 2017 and December 2021.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, after a meeting of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Aso Villa, said: “We came as a group to formally commiserate with the President over the passing of the former President Muhammadu Buhari and also to discuss the upcoming National Executive Committee (NWC) meeting of our party tomorrow (today).”

Giving further insight, Uzodimma explained: “The party only advertised the NEC meeting.

“We did not advertise or send out letters for the caucus meeting, and from all indications, tomorrow’s (today’s) meeting will be a very brief one that will centre on the appointment of National Chairman.

“The NEC may delegate its powers to NWC on the issues of ratification of the schedule for congresses and standing committees, as well as an update on the party’s e-registration process across the 36 states.”

In effect, Uzodimma confirmed that the caucus meeting, which usually precedes the NEC meeting, would not be held last night.

The governor said: “We also shared some ideas with Mr. President on how best to strengthen our party at the grassroots, at the local government, at the state level, up to the national level.”

Asked whether the NEC meeting would produce a consensus on the appointment of a new chairman, Uzodinma was non-committal, saying that the outcome would become clear after the meeting.

“It is a NEC meeting; we cannot say what the outcome will be. When you come there tomorrow (today), you will see it.”

National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said in a statement that the NEC meeting had been shifted from the Secretariat to the Aso Villa for 10 am.

Last night, APC governors, state chairmen and NWC members held a series of meetings ahead of today’s NEC meeting.

Led by PGF Chairman Uzodimma, they included 22 governors and the deputy governors of Katsina and Akwa Ibom states.

Among them were the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRasak AbdulRahman (Kwara), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Senator Uba Sani (Kaduna) and Umar Bago (Niger).

Why I was not in Kano for Tinubu’s condolence visit, by Ganduje

The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said that he is currently in London, hence his absence during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s condolence visit to Kano on Friday.

The clarification came on the heels of speculations that Ganduje was “deliberately excluded” from the President’s entourage during his condolence visit to the Dantata family over the demise of their patriarch, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who recently passed on in Saudi Arabia.

A statement by Malam Muhammad Garba, the former Chief of Staff to the former APC leader in Abuja on Saturday, said Ganduje had traveled to London for a personal engagement that had been arranged well in advance.

Garba explained that the visit by President Tinubu was communicated to Ganduje but noted that the former Kano State governor was unable to reschedule his flight and itinerary to enable him to return in time for the presidential visit.

According to Garba, “ Dr. Ganduje made every effort to adjust his plans but was unable to do so.’

The statement, however, maintained that Ganduje remained in constant communication with key party leaders, including the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the APC Kano State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, to ensure smooth coordination for the President’s visit.

Garba emphasized that Ganduje’s resignation as the APC National Chairman in no way affects his cordial, long standing relationship with President Tinubu, a bond built over years of mutual respect and political alignment.

“The APC in Kano,” he added, “remains fully united, loyal, and committed to the vision and leadership of President Tinubu,” he said, reaffirming the party’s strong support for the Renewed Hope Agenda.
