Keyamo inaugurates Ganduje, Kuku, six other governing board of FAAN

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Wednesday, inaugurated the board members of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The minister charged the newly inaugurated members of the board to prioritise safety, security, and passenger experience in their new roles.

The Chairman of the Board is Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, and other members are Engr. T. P. Vembe, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Ms. Dorothy Duruaka, Ahmed Ibrahim Suleiman, Engr. Nasiru Muazu, Dr. Omozojie Okoboh and Mrs. Bridget Gold.

Speaking during the inauguration in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister stated the role FAAN plays in Nigeria’s aviation sector, noting that the Authority’s success is not measured by financial growth but by its impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The Minister tasked the Board Members to ensure safety and security, promote sustainable development, enhance passenger experience, and foster collaboration with other agencies and organisations.

He said, “As you embark on this new chapter, remember that the eyes of the nation are upon you. The success of FAAN is not measured merely by financial growth but by the impact it has on the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Your work will ensure that our airports become not just gateways to the world but also symbols of national pride and progress.

“As we inaugurate this new board, we carry the weight of expectation that we must continue to foster an environment where aviation can thrive, connect diverse regions, and promote socioeconomic development across our nation. The challenges we face are numerous—from infrastructure deficits to the ever-evolving dynamics of global aviation. Yet, I am confident that the wealth of experience and expertise that each of you brings to this board will be instrumental in steering FAAN towards achieving its mission.

“You have been entrusted with a critical mandate. You are not merely figureheads; you are the architects of our aviation future. Your role demands a meticulous approach to governance, a commitment to transparency, and an unwavering dedication to the principles enshrined in the Federal Airports Authority Act”.

On some of the areas of priority, Keyamo said, “It is imperative that our airports not only facilitate travel but also guarantee the safety and security of all users. You must prioritise enhancing our airport security measures in line with international best practices.

“As we strive for excellence, we must also advocate for sustainable practices that will safeguard our environment for future generations while boosting our economy.

“The passenger should always be at the centre of our operations. Improvements in service delivery, customer satisfaction, and the overall airport experience should be paramount on your agenda

“Aviation is a global industry. As such, we must foster partnerships with other governmental and non-governmental agencies, international organisations, and the private sector to grow our aviation economy.”

He urged them to work towards elevating the standards of the aviation sector, improving connectivity, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of the board members, Ganduje assured that they would study the FAAN Act and work in line with the Act to improve service delivery.

He said, “We will study the Act of FAAN to see our boundary, so that we do not exceed our boundary. I know this is a common problem between the Boards and the Executive Management and the Ministry. So we are fully conscious of this. But at the same time, we will study so we do not exhibit mediocrity by not doing what we are expected to do.

“We will ensure service delivery. Because that is the whole essence of FAAN. Service delivery is becoming complicated because there are so many stakeholder institutions, both at the national level and the international level, and we must be conscious of Nigeria as a country that is a leading country in Africa. So, we must exhibit our services to the best international standards.

“We will ensure effective institutional governance and effective compliance with regulatory limits because this aspect is dynamic, as it deals with international communities.

“We will ensure passenger satisfaction and the functionality of infrastructural facilities because it is very important. Once you drop off at the airport and the infrastructural facilities are not functioning, that is the first impression the passenger will have not only on FAAN, not only on the Ministry of Aviation, but on the whole country.”

The Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, promised to work with the board members and the Ministry to provide an environment with improved passenger experience.

She expressed hope that Nigerians and others will be proud of the visible work that will be done by the board at the end of its tenure.

No rift between Ganduje and Tinubu, says Kano APC group

A group of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, known as Tinubu Care and Concern (TCC), on Monday said there was no frosty ties between the immediate past APC national chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and President Bola Tinubu.

The National Chairman of TCC, Kamal Sarki, and other executives of the group, who addressed a press conference in Kano, said they were reacting to speculations that the president was no longer in good terms with the ex-governor of Kano that led to his resignation as APC national chairman.

“The recent resignation of Dr. Ganduje from the leadership of APC has sparked numerous speculations among party members and supporters.

“The opposition groups are misinterpreting it and peddling falsehoods that Ganduje resigned because of misunderstanding with the president.

“This is not true. It is all propaganda, using the resignation to tarnish the image of our party and score cheap political goals.

“We are aware that Ganduje resigned voluntarily and that there is no personal or political rift between him and Mr. President.

“Ganduje’s foes will be put to shame by the time Mr. President returns to the country.

“We call on all supporters of APC to shun the mischief makers and continue to rally behind the ruling party and administration President Bola Tinubu,” Sarki said and urged APC supporters to work and pray for victory in all future elections.

TCC commended Ganduje, saying APC is stronger than when he took over as national chairman.

The group said the Tinubu administration has remained relentless in fulfilling its Renewed Hope promises, while achieving remarkable milestones in the delivery of dividends of democracy to all Nigerians.

“Kano State has also recorded significant gains from the Tinubu administration, and the president is poised to do more,” Sarki added.

The group mentioned economic reforms through fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange unification, infrastructural development, security, education (students loan scheme, National Health Fellows Program) and healthcare (expansion of primary healthcare centers across Nigeria) as some of the significant milestones achieved by President Tinubu.

“The Tinubu administration has also done well in the areas of social investment programs for the youth, implementation of national minimum wage as well as the compressed natural gas initiative. These achievements are now boosting economic growth and development of the country.

  • Ganduje: Gazing into the crystal ball

Ganduje: Gazing into the crystal ball

    • By Gboyega Amoboye

Sir: Politics is said to be a game of abracadabra. Magicians would say the more you look, the less you see. Political scientists would say no permanent enemy or friend but permanent interest. If in heaven, the brightest angel could fall, the fall of Abddullahi Ganduje from the chair of the APC should not be a surprise. Give it to him he is a committed loyalist of President Bola Tinubu. His unwavering loyalty must have earned him the chairman of the APC despite his controversial image and zone.

But as politics is already in top gear for 2027, the political chess board has called for the sacrifice of the pawn and therefore Ganduje must go to strategize for victory.

If Benue is the food basket of the country, Kano, Lagos and Rivers are the vote baskets. A kingmaker without political base is like a voter without voter’s card. There is no sentimentality in politics. Yesterday’s man must give way to today’s man. The massive votes normally put on the table in every presidential election by Kano cannot be taken for granted. One should therefore watch out for Rabiu Kwankwaso’s foot steps into the APC. The political siren of Kano is no longer blowing for Ganduje but Kwankwaso.

When recently the Northeast APC endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term but was silent on Vice President Kashim Shettima, there was a protest by his supporters who could read the hand writing on the wall. It was skilfully explained that only the president could nominate his running mate and at the National Convention.

The question may be asked that why the sudden change in music that has warranted a change in footsteps? To political observers, the gathering storm in the coalition group of Atiku/El- Rufai/ Rotimi Amaechi cannot be taken for granted though many of the gang exist in names only.

Nasir El Rufai may be nobody in the South but could not be written off in the north where his weapon is religion.

The former vice president, Atiku Abubakar though waning in political influence remains formidable in the Northeast where the vice president comes from. In the Southeast, Peter Obi, hitherto an ally of Atiku would remain a dark horse especially in the East and among some groups of youths and in religious circle. That accounted for his victory In Lagos, Abuja and middle belt in 2023. He could therefore not be underrated despite the mass defection from his political stronghold to the APC.

Read Also: How we raised TB, flood risks awareness, by Oyo NOA

His undoing however might be pairing with Atiku who is becoming a political liability especially in the South. The mistake of Atiku and Obi in 2023 was to have run as individuals. But that is history. According to an ancient war strategist, Sun Izu, ‘one’s victories in battle cannot be repeated…’ so Atiku and Obi may not be able to win today’s election with an old strategy where Tinubu is already in top grand strategy. President Tinubu with the power of incumbency has been busy consolidating nationwide. The Anambra State governor, Charles Soludo who might see himself as a potential presidential candidate or vice in 2031 has vowed not to support Obi in 2027. Do not blame him. Doing so would block his dream. Of course, he has openly declared support for the president who he may need in 2031.

Going forward and in the language of the great Dr. KO Mbadiwe there is need for APC to ‘zone to unzone’.

Therefore, what is showing on the APC political crystal ball is a possibility of zoning the national chairman to the Northeast and the vice president to the Northwest where President Bola Tinubu got the highest number votes in 2023. He needs to do so fast to check mate El Rufai and more importantly, reassure the zone of the APC Presidential ticket in 2031as a bargain for massive support.

That his kinsman and deputy national chairman of the APC (North), Ali Bukar Dalori from Borno has been appointed acting national chairman may be confirmation of the shifting sands under the feet of the vice president.

Nevertheless, it may be too early to say good night to him as in politics also, the godfathers never sleep.

The succession race for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got underway yesterday with former governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Plateau State,  Senator Joshua Dariye, former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, Senator Solomon Ewuga, and Senator Sani Musa, emerging as early contestants.

Also heavily tipped for the position last night was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief George Akume.

They are all from the North Central which had mounted a serious campaign for the office after the exit of Alhaji Abdulahi Adamu in 2023.

Party sources said yesterday that Senator Abu Ibrahim from Katsina in the North West could also join the race.

A few media outlets reported last night that Akume had been appointed to the position only for them to pull the story down.

The State House denied any such appointment.

Special Aviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said “there has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

He said President Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, “has not made any new appointments.”

He confirmed that “information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue.”

Onanuga blamed those he called agents of mischief for fabricating the ‘fake news’.“

The APC national chairman position became vacant on Friday following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Two groups from the North Central yesterday revved up agitation for the allocation of the position to the zone.

One of them, States Youth Leaders’ Forum of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) advocated zoning the position to the North Central and particularly Nasarawa State which produced Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu.

Also rooting for the zone is the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum which said it was time for the NC to have the position back in the interest of fairness.

The Coordinating Chairman of the States Youth Leaders’ Forum of the defunct CPC, Prince Sani Ogu Salisu, said yesterday that “by giving the North Central Zone the opportunity to lead, the APC would be reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and regional representation, which are critical for maintaining party harmony and achieving electoral victories.”

Ogu described Al-Makura as the ideal candidate for the position of National Chairman.

“Senator Al-Makura’s appointment would not only be a nod to the zoning principle but also a strategic move to ensure party cohesion and electoral success in 2027,” he said

On its part, the North-Central APC Forum said the position of APC National Chairman was originally zoned to the North-Central but was given to Ganduje from the North-West in violation of the party’s zoning formula.

The Forum’s Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga said the party now has an opportunity to correct what it described as a longstanding injustice against the North-Central zone.

The Forum said it suspended its opposition to Ganduje’s appointment in 2023 in the interest of party unity.

He said: “We have consistently maintained that the position of National Chairman should remain in the North-Central to complete the tenure of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

“We even went to court to pursue this demand. However, when the National Executive Committee (NEC) ratified Ganduje’s appointment, we chose to suspend the agitation for the sake of the party’s stability.”

With Ganduje’s resignation, the Forum said the time has come to return the position of National Chairman to the North-Central, urging President Tinubu to direct the Acting National Chairman, Ali Bukar Dalori, to immediately convene a National Executive Committee meeting to elect a substantive replacement from the region.

“The resignation has presented a golden opportunity for the party to do the right thing, for fairness, justice and equity. The North-Central played a critical role in the 2023 elections and deserves to be recognised accordingly,” the Forum added.

He said the North-Central zone gave Tinubu 11,760,993 votes (41.3%), the third-highest number of votes nationally, behind only the South-West and North-West.

It also pointed out that the APC controls five of the six states in the region, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger, further affirming its political strength.

The Forum added that the zone boasts several qualified individuals capable of steering the party to success in the 2027 general election.

“This is not just a demand based on sentiment. The North-Central has capable hands that can lead the APC to greater electoral victories. Returning the chairmanship to the zone will consolidate the party’s progress and stability,” the group noted.

The Forum commended Ganduje for his contributions while in office, including attracting high-profile defections from other parties and helping the APC win states formerly held by opposition.

“Under Ganduje’s leadership, the APC welcomed defectors including governors, senators and House of Representatives members. His leadership also contributed to electoral victories in States like Edo.”

Akume has served in several capacities since the return to democracy in 1999, first as two term governor of Benue State and later as Senator and minister in the Buhari Administration.

Makura, a two term governor of Nasarawa State, was elected to the Senate after his tenure as governor.

Musa currently represents Niger East in the Senate and he is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance.

He is credited with playing a crucial role in the recent consideration of the Tax Reform bills by the National Assembly.

Alhaji Abu Ibrahim was deputy minority chief whip of the Senate between 2011 and 2015. He was also a critical stakeholder in the merger talks that gave birth to the APC.

Soon after Ganduje’s resignation on Friday, the party named the Deputy National Chairman (North) Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori as replacement in an acting capacity pending the convening of a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to pick a substantive chair.

Ganduje formally handed over to Dalori yesterday in Abuja.

Although the APC said a substantive chairman would be elected soon, getting this done will take a minimum of 14 days.

Article 25.2 of the party’s constitution stipulates that the NEC “shall meet every quarter and or at any time decided by the National Working Committee or at the request made in writing by one-third of the members of the National Executive Committee, provided that not less than fourteen (14) days notice is given for the meeting.

However, the NWC may summon an emergency NEC meeting at any time “provided that at least three (3) days notice of the meeting shall be given to all persons entitled to attend.

Obi hails Ganduje’s resignation as APC national chairman

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has commended Dr Abdullahi Ganduje for resigning as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Ganduje submitted his resignation letter to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) through its National Secretary, Sen. Ajibola Bashiru, on Friday.

The former Kano State governor cited health reasons for his decision to step down.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra, gave his commendation in a post on his X handle on Friday.

According to him, he read a news report that the APC National Chairman, Ganduje, resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing health challenges as the reason.

“I must commend Ganduje for prioritising his health above all else.

“With his health reportedly in decline, it is both wise and honourable to step aside, knowing that he may no longer be able to render the level of service required by the party, the people, and the nation.

“By this exemplary action, Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally.

“I sincerely hope they take a cue from him”, he said.

He explained that the challenges confronting Nigeria required leaders who were competent, physically and mentally fit with the capacity and agility to respond decisively and promptly to pressing issues.

“At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments.

“These things are taking a serious toll on our development. May God Almighty grant Dr Ganduje a peaceful and fulfilling retirement”, he added.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Ganduje has declared that the ruling party would displace the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and take over Enugu State government House in 2027.

Ganduje spoke at Akama-Oghe in Ezeagu local government area when he led the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji and other prominent members of the party to officially receive the member representing Udi/Ezeagu federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha and the entire Labour Party structure in the constituency into the APC, at the weekend.

With his defection, Umeha, the former LP lawmaker, is the first elected political office holder to be produced by APC in Enugu state since the inception of the party in 2014.

Those who defected with him were: Hon Dennis Amadi, former member of House of Representatives (Udi/Ezeagu, 2015-2023), and Enugu West senatorial candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general elections; Hon Emma Ogbozo, LP House of Assembly candidate, Udi North constituency; Barr Chibuzor Onyema, LP House of Assembly candidate, Udi South; as well as the entire LP executives in the 40 Wards and two local government areas of Udi/Ezeagu federal constituency.

I’m telling all the Labour Party members, the person that asked me to come here is the National Chairman of APC, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje.

“He said I should tell Hon Cyriacus Umeha, Hon Dennis Oguerinwa Amadi, and all those that joined APC with them, including Hon Emma Ogbozo my friend, that you have made the right decision. You will not be disappointed.

“You see that man that is governing Enugu now, he has ended his reign, I can tell you reliably that he has finished his one term; the way he came is the same way he will go.
