Continuity as Strategy: The APC’s Path to Stability and Continued Dominance led by President Tinubu, Ganduje and Gov Hope Uzodinma

Nigeria’s political history is filled with well-intentioned policies derailed by legislative turnover. Just as a football team would never bench its star players before a crucial match, a serious political party cannot afford to discard its most effective lawmakers at the height of their productivity. As the 2027 elections approach, the All Progressives Congress (APC) faces a defining choice: embrace continuity and stability, or risk the familiar chaos of divisive primaries and factional disputes that have undermined governance in the past.

The Tinubu administration has spent two years laying the groundwork for long-term reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda. But without experienced hands in the National Assembly, these efforts could unravel. Each election cycle, Nigeria loses seasoned legislators to political turnover. This forces the executive to restart negotiations, rebuild alliances, and re-explain policies to new lawmakers. The result is delayed progress, stalled projects, and squandered momentum. These are luxuries Nigeria cannot afford.

The solution lies in rewarding performance and ensuring stability. By supporting the return of lawmakers who have delivered for their constituents and aligned with the party’s vision, the APC can maintain focus on governance rather than internal battles. More importantly, this approach prevents the prolonged political distraction that accompanies primary season. This is typically a period where governance takes a backseat to survival politics.

This is not merely a suggestion. It is the official position of the party’s leadership, backed by President Tinubu, Chairman Ganduje, and pragmatic governors like Hope Uzodinma. Any resistance, particularly from within the party’s ranks, must be recognized for what it represents. It is a challenge to both the President’s authority and the collective decision of the APC. At this critical juncture, the party cannot afford internal divisions. The stakes are simply too high.

Critics may argue that this limits competition, but they miss the broader point. This is not about suppressing democracy. It is about recognizing and retaining competence. Lawmakers who have proven their ability to govern, legislate, and win elections deserve the chance to build on their achievements. Why replace them with untested candidates when continuity offers stability and a stronger path to electoral success?

This indeed is a practice by the very innovators of the type of democracy we practice as a Nation, – the United States of America. The two main political parties in the USA; The Republican Party and The Democratic Party practice a protection and almost a right of first refusal to its Congressmen and Senators which has led to incomparable legislative experience between US Lawmakers as against lawmakers across the world.

The APC’s 2023 victory was no accident. It was the product of unity, strategic planning, and a clear governance agenda. To replicate that success in 2027, the party must remain disciplined and focused. Those who undermine this vision risk not only the party’s future but also Nigeria’s progress.

The message is clear. Stand with the party’s decision, or stand aside. The APC will not tolerate internal sabotage. Not when the nation’s stability and the party’s legacy hang in the balance.

This is the party’s position. This is the President’s vision. And this is how the APC will secure another decisive victory in 2027. By prioritizing governance, rewarding excellence, and ensuring continuity where it matters most.

2027: Barau, Ganduje say no vacancy in Aso Rock as North West APC endorses Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) North West Zone emerged from its stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for second term in 2027.

The meeting included the National Chairman of the Party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; APC Governors from the zone, including Uba Sani (Kaduna); Nasir Idris (Kebbi) and Umar Namadi (Jigawa) as well Speaker Tajudeen Abbas; Senate Deputy President Barau I Jibrin, Ministers from the Zone and other stakeholders.

Others in attendance were chairmen of State Chapters of APC, state and federal legislators, heads of Federal Agencies, and senior political appointees.

The foundation for the president’s endorsement was laid when Barau I Jibrin, asked the gathering comprising the who’s who in the APC North West geopolitical zone, ” Aso Rock?” The crowd responded by saying,” No vacancy.”

After the gathering responded, Senator Barau said: “So it is clear in 2027, we will have a landslide victory, inshallah. So let us continue on the way we are going. Let us cooperate with one another, work with the president, work with everybody, cooperate amongst ourselves to have the desired victory.”

He said the defection of stalwarts of the opposition political parties to the APC was a result of President Tinubu’s performance in addressing the challenges bedevilling the country.

“This is not happening for nothing. There are reasons for this. What are the reasons? Number one is the performance of our dear president. The president, of course, inherited a lot of challenges, bedevilling our country. But he has come up with programs and policies to surmount these challenges.

“Security challenges, economic challenges, name them. We’ve seen how he has dealt with our problem, our security problem—the security we’ve been facing in the North West. Several areas were not accessible before now. You could not go to some areas before now. But now you can go to some places, you can travel from Abuja to Kaduna. This was quite impossible before he came to power.

“Similarly, before this administration, you could not go to Birnin Gwari, but life has returned to the area. The people have returned to their farmlands.Several areas that were not accessible are now accessible.

“We know we are not where we want to be. We are not there yet. We are not finally there yet. But it’s a work in progress. Mr President is working hard, day in and day out, to surmount this country’s insecurity problem, particularly in the North West. It is a work in progress. It is easy to have problems, but not easy to solve them.

“And of course, that is not alone. That is not the only reason we have these influxes to our party—the performance of our governors. Our governors are doing well, working day in, day out,” he said.

He added, “The national chairman of our party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is leading all the party leaders in the country to bring about these improvements we are witnessing in APC. We are all here as brothers and sisters,” he said.

Ganduje, emphasised Tinubu is committed to developing the North West, the entire northern region and Nigeria by extension.

He said the commitment has been demonstrated through his several intervention projects, ranging from infrastructure to agriculture to social development across the northern region. He emphasised that the establishment of the North West Development Commission was a clear indication that the President loves the North West Region.

While assuring that “we have started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel,” Ganduje categorically stated that there will be no vacancy in Aso Rock Villa come 2027.

Alleged misappropriation: Court dismisses Ganduje, others’ application challenging jurisdiction

A Kano State High Court has dismissed the application filed by the former governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear their case of alleged bribery and misappropriation.

NAN reports that the Kano State Government instituted an 11-count charge bordering on bribery, conspiracy,  misappropriation and diversion of public funds running into billions of Naira against Ganduje, and his wife Hafsat Umar.

Others charged alongside Ganduje are Abubakar Bawuro, Umar Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, in her ruling, struck out the defendants’ preliminary objections, describing them as incompetent and citing relevant legal authorities.

Adamu-Aliyu held that the charges filed on May 13, 2024, against the defendants were competent to be tried.

The judge ruled that the case should proceed to trial in the absence of Ganduje and six others.

She also issued a summon to the sixth defendant, Lamash Properties Limited, and adjourned the matter until July 30 and July 31, 2025 for hearing.

Earlier, counsel to Ganduje, wife, and Umar,  Mrs Lydia Oluwakemi Oyewo, filed a preliminary objection dated Nov.18, 2024, challenging the jurisdiction of the court and urged the court to quash all charges against the defendants.

One-party controversy: Ganduje, Damagum, Gabam clash

    • PDP, SDP chairmen, LP tackle APC chair

The one-party state controversy, which arose after a spate of defections into the All Progressives Congress (APC) since the tsunami in Delta State, deepened at the weekend.

Many commentators and opposition figures have accused the APC of plotting a one-party state by wooing and winning over opposition political office holders – governors, federal and state lawmakers.

But the APC has consistently said those joining it are doing so willingly, having been attracted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s performance and plans for the country.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, chided those accusing the ruling party of plotting to push the country into a one-party system.

Ganduje, a former Kano State governor, said: “A one-party state is not by force. It’s by negotiation. It’s because other political parties see the effect of the positive governance of our party.

“If they decide to come to our party, willingly, I think there is nothing wrong with that.

“Today, democratic China is one of the strongest countries in the world, and it’s a one-party system.

“We are not saying we are working for a one-party system, but if this is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.

“You know they say too many cooks spoil the soup, too many political parties spoil governance.”

Ganduje spoke at Aso Villa when he led the three Kebbi State senators – Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) – all elected on the PDP platform, to meet with President Tinubu for final negotiation ahead of their defection this week to the ruling party.

But PDP National Chairman Umar Ilya Damagum and National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Shehu Musa Gabam lashed out at Ganduje on his position.

Damgum described the idea of a single-party state as “madness”.

He said: “One-party system can only happen somewhere else, not in this country.

“Recall what history says about anybody wishing for a one-party state. Where will such people end?”

Gabam said: “The PDP, the party in power before the emergence of APC, passed through that route some time ago, deluding themselves that they would be in control of levers of power forever, but that fell on their faces.

“It is Nigerians who are in the best position to tell if their lives have changed for the better or that they have been impacted positively under the APC.

“The motivation of the ongoing gale of defections, particularly by some governors and elected political office holders, is not altruistic.

“It is self-serving and undeniably done for self-preservation.

“Nigerians are in agreement that the power of choice through democratic options that multi-party democracy offers is one that cannot and should not be compromised.

“A one-party system breeds authoritarian rule and erodes the freedom of the electorate.

“It is not debatable that Nigeria needs a strong opposition for democratic consolidation.”

Gabam spoke through the National Publicity Secretary of SDP, Rufus Aiyenigba.

The Labour Party, which criticised the ruling class for being selfish, said self-interest is behind defections to the ruling party.

Publicity Secretary of the Julius Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, who spoke on behalf of the party, said Nigerians would not support a one-party state.

He said: “One-party system is undemocratic and it breeds tyranny. Nigerians will not be pushed into that political system.

“However, it must be said that many political parties are in crisis today because some leaders of those parties are not willing to subject themselves to party supremacy.

“As such, political office holders use the inherent confusion in these parties to jump over to the ruling party, hoping to have easy access to political relevance and the cover provided by the ruling party.

“Is it not absurd that a governor of an opposition party cannot even critique constructively or even appraise the ruling party in the face of the myriad economic challenges in the country today?

“Or how do you explain how another opposition governor, barely two years into a government, is now campaigning for a president from another party against his own party?

“The political class is so selfish that what counts for them is survival first, and they can do everything to ensure that they hold onto power, including betraying the party that sponsored them to the office.”

APC has mechanisms for smooth integration of defectors — Ganduje

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has assured Nigerians that the recent wave of defections into the ruling party, including three Senators from Kebbi State, will be managed seamlessly through established party mechanisms.

Speaking after leading the defecting senators to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Friday, Ganduje said the APC’s constitution and its internal structures provide clear guidance for integrating new members.

“Our constitution is very clear about this and, beyond that, our political dexterity in managing such affairs is on the table. So, I assure you that there will be a smooth integration,” he stated.

The meeting at the State House followed the decision of the three Kebbi senators — previously elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — to decamp to the APC.

The lawmakers — Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central); Senator Yahaya Abubakar Abdullahi (Kebbi North) and Senator Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South), according to Ganduje, will soon announce their decision on the floor of the Senate.

Ganduje described the development as strategic and beneficial to the party, noting that the defections were the result of weeks of underground negotiations and consultations among key stakeholders in Kebbi State.

“This is in continuation of the initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that the APC must do what it must do democratically in order to increase our numerical strength. In this incident, not only our numerical strength, but also the quality and capacity of our followership have increased,” Ganduje said.

According to him, Tinubu has graciously given his blessing to the senators’ decision, signalling the party’s readiness to formally welcome the new members.

“By Tuesday, you will see what will happen in the Red Chambers,” he added, hinting at an official announcement in the Senate.

The APC chairman dismissed fears that the mass defections could signal a drift toward a one-party state, insisting that the growing dominance of the APC is a reflection of its performance and appeal across the country.

“Leaders worried about a one-party state have no need to fear. A one-party state is not by force; it is by negotiation. It is by other political parties seeing the effect of the positive governance of our party. If they decide to come to our party willingly, I think there is nothing wrong with that,” he explained.

Citing global examples, Ganduje said: “Today China is one of the strongest countries in the world and is a one-party system. We are not saying we are working for a one-party system, but if this is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.”

He also took a swipe at current political structure, arguing that a crowded political space could hinder good governance.

“You know they say too many cooks spoil the soup; too many political parties spoil governance,” Ganduje remarked.

In recent months, the APC has recorded several defections from opposition parties in both chambers of the National Assembly, a trend many attribute to the consolidation of power by the ruling party under President Tinubu.

Ganduje maintained that the APC remains committed to democratic principles and inclusiveness, asserting that every new member would find a place within the party’s broad framework and leadership structure.

We’ll welcome Kwankwaso if he decides to join us – Ganduje

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that the party will welcome Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano Governor if he decides to join.

Speaking to news reporters after receiving Alhaji Yusuf Ata, Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development, Ganduje said:” The APC is deepening and widening democracy in the country.

”Kwankwaso is a fish out of water, trying to find its way back into the waters.

“We cannot say we can’t accommodate him, because a friend in need is a friend indeed.

“We don’t want to leave him completely abandoned, we can still have him in, if he wants to join us”.

“When you see your son running to where he would get shelter and you are a big brother in a big home, I think it is morally right to accommodate him.

“So, we cannot say we cannot accommodate him,” Ganduje stressed.

In 2023, Kwankwaso ran for the Presidency under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) receiving 6.23% of the vote.

Ata, who is a former Kano Speaker, stated that his reason for visiting Ganduje was to appreciate him and give his support for what the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is doing in Kano State.

“We are strongly behind Tinubu, and we are working round the clock to ensure we deliver Kano State in 2027,” he said.

Speaking on the ‘Kwankwasiyya movement”, Ata said the Kwankwasiyya red cap era was becoming a thing of the past in the state.

”For me, I will not want the former Kano State governor to be welcomed into the APC fold. But I have no choice if our national chairman decides to have him on board,” Ata said.

The Executive Director (Business Development), NEXIM Bank, Stella Okotete expressed excitement at the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In welcoming Governor Oborevwori and several prominent PDP leaders, including former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, into the governing party, Okotete, a former APC National Woman Leader, said this development will not only strengthen the party but also enhance its chances of achieving greater success in the coming years, particularly in the South-South geopolitical zone and beyond.

Okotete, in a statement, said: “This momentous decision marks not just a political transition, but a bold affirmation of vision, courage, and commitment to the development of Delta State through inclusive, progressive governance. Your Excellency, your entry into the APC is a powerful testament to our party’s rising influence and capacity to unite all well-meaning leaders under one formidable umbrella of growth and transformation.

“As we welcome the Governor and all the PDP members in Delta state into our fold, I call on every APC member—leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots supporters alike—to embrace this new era with open arms and renewed purpose. Let us put aside all divisive tendencies and prioritize loyalty to the party, unity of purpose, and service-driven governance.

“Our collective strength lies in our unity. And today, with Delta State now firmly aligned with the centre, we stand at the threshold of greatness. Together, let us consolidate our efforts towards the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, support the leadership of Governor Oborevwori, and ensure the continuous growth and dominance of the APC in every corner of our state.

“A progressive Delta is not a dream—it is our present reality. Let us build it, protect it, and be proud of it”.

Recall that several APC leaders including Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo SAN, Delta APC Founding Leader, Olorogun Otega Emerhor; former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe; Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, Sen. Joel Onowakpo-Thomas; his Delta Central counterpart, Sen. Ede Dafinone have all welcomed the defection of the governor to the party.

Also, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi hailed the defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other key member from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a bold and strategic move.

In a statement by his media aide Mr.Ike Abiagom, Nwaoboshi said Delta State APC family welcomes Governor Oborevwori and other PDP leaders into its fold, describing their entry as a significant boost to the party’s strength and structure across the state.

Nwaoboshi said the political realignment would bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

He described the development as a game changer for Delta APC,and praised the governor’s bold decision to join the APC.

He added it was a strategic step toward unity, progress, and the advancement of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Nwaoboshi maintained that the defection signifies a turning point for governance and political collaboration in the state and urged all APC members to embrace the new entrants with open arms, stressing that unity within the party would be crucial for delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.

He said, “As you step into this new chapter with the APC, be assured of my unwavering support and that of many other progressives who believe in building bridges rather than walls. Together, we shall work to consolidate this momentum and build a Delta State that is not only united but strategically positioned to benefit immensely from its new alignment with the Federal Government.

“We look forward to working together for the betterment of Delta State and in strong support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visionary leadership.I urge all APC faithful to welcome Governor Oborevwori and incoming members with open arms.”

    …inaugurates new executive in Paris

The political reach of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) received a major international boost over the weekend as the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, inaugurated the new executive committee of the APC France chapter in Paris.

During the inauguration, Ganduje called on Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly APC members, to throw their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda and the Renewed Hope vision aimed at repositioning the country for long-term prosperity.

Highlighting the vital role of unity and collaboration among party members abroad, Ganduje noted that the diaspora’s support is essential for the success of the administration’s economic reforms and national development goals.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, on Monday in Abuja, Ganduje acknowledged that while the reforms may be tough, they are necessary to secure sustainable growth for Nigeria.

He also commended the diaspora for expanding the party’s presence globally through strategic mobilisation and membership recruitment, describing their efforts as commendable and impactful.

Expressing excitement at the large turnout of party faithful from across Europe for the Paris event, Ganduje reassured Nigerians abroad that the APC-led government is committed to achieving full political inclusion for diaspora citizens, including working with the National Assembly to make diaspora voting a reality.

“We appreciate you for holding the banner of our party, expanding its membership, and supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially in light of the critical reforms he is undertaking. There is now more funding for capital development, and both governors and local government chairmen can attest to this,” Ganduje stated.

The Chairman updated party members in diaspora of the recent party meetings, including those of the National Caucus and the National Executive Committee (NEC), which affirmed overwhelming support for the President’s performance.

“At the end of the NEC meeting, a vote of confidence was passed on President Tinubu because of the progress his administration is making. He is a reformer and has introduced significant changes, especially in the economic sector.”

He also said the increasing internal stability of the party and the defection of key figures from other opposition political parties have further enhanced the political prospects of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, “There is peace in the APC, unlike in other parties that are battling internal crises. Because of this enabling environment, many are decamping to our party, including Senators, members of the House of Representatives, State Assembly members, and other notable political figures. Our party respects its constitution and practices internal democracy.”

The newly inaugurated Chairlady of the APC France Chapter, Hajjiya Amina Musa Baba Suzuki, reiterated the critical role of Nigerians in the diaspora in national development, not just as economic contributors, but also as political stakeholders.

“The Nigerian diaspora contributes billions in remittances and investments, but we are also thought leaders and proud ambassadors of Nigeria’s democracy,” she said.

She advocated for stronger support for diaspora chapters, emphasising their role as mobilizers and promoters of Nigeria’s interests abroad.

“We serve as vital links between our people and democratic processes at home. Our chapter and others like it act as soft-power diplomats, advocates, and connectors.”

While acknowledging the efforts of the party leadership, Baba Suzuki appealed to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to champion the cause of diaspora voting.

“Under your visionary leadership, we believe diaspora voting can become a reality. It is not only possible—it is necessary. We respectfully urge you to make this dream come true during the life of this administration. After all, where there is a will, there is always a way.”

Those who attended the inauguration include the wife of the APC National Chairman Professor Hafsat Ganduje, APC National Women Leader, Dr Mrs Mary Alile, Chairman of Forum of APC Chairmen in Europe, Honourable Tunde Doherty, HRM Oba Aderounmu Bamidele Sadiq, Ilufemiloye 1, Oba Yoruba in France among others.

    • Sokoto chair: PDP has capacity to stand alone

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lashed out at opposition politicians mobilising for a coalition against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, dismissed the coalition moves as a doomed joint venture.

Ganduje, emerging from a meeting between former President Muhammadu Buhari and an APC delegation in Kaduna on Friday night, described the brains behind the coalition as strange bed fellows who cannot work together.

The APC delegation was at Buhari’s residence only a few hours after Vice President Atiku Abubakar led other opposition figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, paid a post-Sallah homage to the ex-president.

The ruling party, Ganduje told reporters, was comfortable and would win not only the presidential election but more governorship seats in 2027.

“We are here to pay Sallah homage to the former President and also we took time to explain to him the achievements of our great party as he left it, because we have promised to be briefing him from time to time,” he said.

Asked about the opposition leaders’ visit that preceded the APC’s earlier in the day, Ganduje said it was none of his party’s business.

He said: “But I must tell them that history is about to repeat itself. They have a joint venture which will not work. This is because they are just some kind of particles that cannot come together.

“Well, it’s a game, but we will not reveal our own intrigues and game plan. But I can tell you we are equal to the task.

“The progress President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made is very encouraging, and that has made our party much stronger.

“Though we have 21 APC states now, I can tell you we are eyeing some more states to come into our fold; either the governors themselves will come or we go into election and we defeat them.

“So, we are comfortable ahead of 2027, but we are not resting on our oars, because it is politics and we are used to the game.”

On alleged lopsided appointments by the President, Ganduje said there was no truth to the claims but explained that the party was working on the statistics of appointments done by President Tinubu to clear the air on the allegation.

His words: “We are coming up with the true figures of the appointments to show Nigerians that Mr. President is not engaged in skewed appointments.”

Earlier in his presentation on the state of the APC to Buhari, Ganduje said the party had introduced a new people-centred approach to campaign administration different from the former practice of inaugurating national campaign governorship councils for states in Abuja, adding that the campaign councils are inaugurated in the affected states to allow for more and greater participation by party members and other stakeholders in their respective states.

He said: “This innovation has helped to engage the right people to organise and manage campaigns in their states for effective delivery before and during the election.

“Your Excellency, as you must be aware, we won governorship elections in Imo, Kogi, Edo and Ondo, but unfortunately lost in Bayelsa State.

“Your Excellency, our focus is now on Anambra and Osun States. And in compliance with the time-table released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party successfully conducted primary elections in Anambra on April 5th, 2025.

“Today, we have in our fold former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim; former Labour Party governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Edwin Nkwegu; Senator Obinna Ogba; Senator Uche Ekwunife from Anambra State, and thousands of their supporters.

“Other decampees are former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko; former Kaduna State governor, Ramalan Yero; former Edo State Deputy Governor, Phillips Shuaibu; two-term Senator representing Edo South and former Clerk of the National Assembly, Senator Matthew Onoghide and Senator Halliru Dauda Jika.

“Your Excellency, in the same vein, the NNPP also lost some of its former National Working Committee members to APC, such as Prof. Rufai Alkali, former National Chairman, who led other prominent leaders and members, including Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, former National Organising Secretary; Prof. Bem Angwe, former National Legal Adviser; Dr. Isa Shika, Chairman and the immediate past Secretary, North West; Mikaih Takwat, Kaduna senatorial candidate, and thousands of their supporters to join us.

“Other notable decampees are Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the Senate and Hon. Yusuf Shittu Galambi, the only NNPP member of the House of Representatives, Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State. Most recently, Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North also joined us.”

He hailed Buhari for remaining loyal to the APC and assured him of the party’s resolve to continue to associate with him, consult him and seek his wise counsel in running the affairs of the party.

He acknowledged the “cordial relationship that exists between you and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is working hard to build on some of your legacies and add value to the lives of Nigerians.”

PDP has capacity to stand alone – Sokoto Chairman

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, said yesterday that the party was strong enough to reclaim its position across Nigeria without merging with any other political group.

Goronyo made this declaration while addressing journalists at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting in Sokoto.

He described the 2023 general elections as a litmus test that confirmed the PDP remained the preferred choice of Nigerians.

“We have the capacity to reclaim our mandate. We are the best choice—tested and trusted by Nigerians,” Goronyo said.

He described the PDP as the only survivor among the five political parties registered for the 1999 elections, insisting, “it is deeply rooted and strong, especially at the grassroots level.”

Goronyo also urged PDP members to remain committed, supportive and prayerful as the party continues its efforts toward safeguarding Nigeria and improving the lives of its citizens.

Northern group faults El-Rufai over sudden praise for Atiku

The Northern Conscience Movement (NCM) yesterday voiced strong reservations over what it described as a perplexing shift in political alignment by former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, particularly his recent public praise for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The group called on Nigerians, particularly younger citizens, to critically examine these political dynamics and reject the culture of opportunism that has come to define the nation’s politics.

In a statement issued yesterday, NCM Coordinator, Lawal Nuhu Ahmed, criticised El-Rufai’s apparent U-turn, highlighting his past scathing criticisms of Atiku, whom he once labeled a “liar,” obsessed with power and “haunted by his corruption demon.”

The NCM also recalled El-Rufai’s memo to former President Muhammadu Buhari, in which he criticised the APC leadership, highlighted the ailing economy and pointed to the growing internal disunity within the ruling party.

He highlighted the ailing economy, the lack of cohesion within the party, and the deteriorating relationship between the President and other party leaders.

While these observations may hold merit, the group said the timing and context of his newfound admiration for Abubakar and Buhari appear to be driven more by political expediency than a sincere change of heart.

Ahmed said: “Atiku Abubakar’s recent overtures towards President Muhammadu Buhari, despite his previous allegations of Buhari’s involvement in the smuggling of looted funds, underscore a complex and perhaps contradictory political maneuvering.

“Abubakar’s recollection of the 1984 incident, where he, as the head of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Command, intercepted 53 suitcases allegedly linked to Buhari’s aide—serves as a critical reminder of the historical context that shapes contemporary political narratives.

“Young Nigerians, particularly Millennials, may benefit from revisiting this episode to understand the deep-seated issues of corruption that continue to plague their nation.

“Abubakar’s assertion that Buhari’s administration has exacerbated corruption, thereby undermining efforts against terrorism in the Northeast, raises pertinent questions about accountability and governance.

“Ultimately, the juxtaposition of past actions and current alliances reveals a troubling paradox in Nigerian politics, where the line between accountability and opportunism often blurs, leaving citizens to discern the truth amidst a cacophony of conflicting narratives.

“The Northern Conscience Movement critiques the recent engagement between El-Rufai and prominent PDP figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Aminu Tambuwal, in their outreach to President Buhari under the guise of unifying against President Tinubu for the 2027 elections.

“This maneuver is perceived as disingenuous, undermining the integrity of political discourse in the region. Furthermore, the Movement expresses concern over Buhari’s receptiveness to this coalition, deeming it insensitive given the prevailing political tensions.

“Such actions may exacerbate divisions rather than foster genuine collaboration, highlighting the complexities of Northern Nigerian politics in an increasingly polarised landscape.

“The NCM believes that such political maneuvering undermines the principles of transparency and accountability that are desperately needed in Nigeria.

“The evolution of El-Rufai’s rhetoric illustrates how personal interests can eclipse previously held convictions, leading to alliances that many would deem improbable.

“This phenomenon is not unique to El-Rufai; it is symptomatic of a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where ideological consistency is frequently sacrificed on the altar of power and influence.”

The NCM cautioned against interpreting El-Rufai’s newfound admiration for Atiku and Buhari as a sign of genuine reconciliation.

Rather, the group argued, it appears to be a strategic move aimed at repositioning himself favorably within the political landscape.

Ahmed further said: “By extending an olive branch to Abubakar and Buhari, El-Rufai may be signaling a willingness to collaborate with former rivals in pursuit of shared goals, but it is imperative that Nigerians remain vigilant against such opportunistic alliances.

“As the Northern Conscience Movement, we advocate for a political culture that values integrity, accountability, and genuine dedication to the welfare of the Nigerian people.

“We call upon all political actors, including El-Rufai, to prioritise the interests of the nation over personal ambitions. The people of Nigeria deserve leaders who are consistent in their values and steadfast in their commitment to the greater good”.

The NCM also encouraged Nigerians to stay engaged and critical in their assessment of political developments.

“Only through active participation and scrutiny can we build a political environment that truly reflects the will and aspirations of the people,” he added.

Coalition is needless distraction – Uzodinma

Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma yesterday dismissed moves by opposition leaders to form a  coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election as needless distractions.

He said the ruling party is unperturbed by the plot as he rhetorically asked: “What is a coalition? We are practising partisan democracy, not coalition democracy. Partisan democracy requires belonging to a political party to contest elections. When your party is no longer viable and you seek political oxygen, you must first leave the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before discussing alliances.

“I began by stating that you don’t change a winning team. We have seen where we were, where we are now, and where we are headed. Ultimately, Nigerians will decide our fate but that decision is years away. As a government, we still have over two years remaining in our term.”

“If you focus on winning the next election when Nigerians entrusted you with a four-year mandate and you’ve barely completed two years, that becomes a distraction. This government remains focused. The APC is alert, and we won’t let anyone take what is in our hands. We are not asleep. When a player is winning, they keep playing,” he said.

Uzodinma said while the APC welcomes new ideas and collaboration, since no one, not even the president, can solve national problems alone, it is through unity that Nigeria grows safer and stronger.

“From 2020 to 2025, 79% of my former opponents in Imo have joined the APC. A party is nothing without its people, and today, the majority in Imo are APC members.”

Speaking on the crisis in Rivers State, Uzodinma supported the emergency rule to protect economic assets. “When pipelines were bombed, we had to prioritise safeguarding production. As chairman of the National Economic Council’s subcommittee on crude oil theft, our efforts have been on how to boost output and any actions threatening our quotas must be condemned. The President, as Chief Security Officer, acted to quell tensions in Rivers. Had the House of Assembly impeached Governor Fubara, it would set a dangerous precedent. It may be him today, another tomorrow. As a Christian, I believe leadership is divine. It is God who ordains.”

Atiku, El Rufai coalition against Tinubu won’t work, says Ganduje

Hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led other opposition figures like Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and other on a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Kaduna residence, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje stormed Buhari’s house with other party leaders.

The APC National Chairman while fielding questions from journalists shortly after the Friday night meeting with Buhari reacted to the earlier visit of Atiku and others, describing them as strange-bird fellows who cannot fuse together.

Ganduje said the APC is comfortable and will win not only the presidential election but more governorship seats in the 2027 elections.

According to him: “We are here to pay Sallah Homage to the former President and also we took time to explain to him the achievements of our great party as he left it, because we have promised to be briefing him from time to time.

“Concerning the group that came to see him, that is not our business. But, I must tell them that history is about to repeat itself; they have a joint venture which will not work. This is because they are just some kind of particles that cannot come together.

“Well, it’s a game, but we will not reveal our own intrigues and game plan, but I can tell you we are equal to the task.

“The progress President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made is very encouraging and that has made our party much stronger. I can tell you that, though we have 21 APC states now,  but j in can tell you we are eyeing some more states to come to our fold, either the Governors themselves will come or we go into election and we defeat them.

“So, we are comfortable ahead of 2027, but we are not resting on our oars, because it’s politics and we are used to the game.”
