    • •National chairman: ruling party targeting  more governors, lawmakers

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has unveiled the party’s plan for victory in the off-cycle elections across the country.

The national chairman said his target was to increase the number of governors and legislators on the party’s platform.

Addressing reporters after inspecting rehabilitation works at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, Ganduje said the APC National Working Committee (NWC) would ensure an all-year-round active party.

The national chairman stressed that he would not wait for the party to be active only during election seasons.

He said: “Our blueprint is to increase the number of legislators that we have in the country; the number of governors that we have in the country and, by implication, the number of state Houses of Assemblies. That is why we said APC will be active throughout the year.

“In our tradition, usually political parties as institutions are only active during the electioneering. But in developed democracies, political parties as institutions are active because they are not only limited to elections and recruitment of membership.

“It is a two-way traffic: it gives the progress of the government to the people and also gives recommendations on its manifestos. That is how the government is assessed. That is how Renewed Hope is achieved.”

On the rehabilitation works at the party’s headquarters, Ganduje said the projects were geared towards the progress and improved status of the party.

“The ongoing renovation works in our secretariat are for the progress of the party and the nation. Before, there was no church; nobody went to church on the premises. But now, we have a church. The mosque is also undergoing rehabilitation work.

“We have shops to avoid street hawking around the building. And we have a concrete drainage,” he said.

The national chairman also promised to equip the party’s media centre with modern communication facilities for live broadcasts from the centre to various media organisations.

Ganduje said: “Our blueprint is to increase the number of legislators that we have in the country. The number of governors that we have in the country and by implication the number of state houses of assemblies.  That is why we said APC will be active throughout the year.”

He also said that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party would ensure an all-year-round active party, stressing that the party under his watch will not only be active during election season.

Adamu stated: “In our tradition, usually political parties as institutions are only active during the electioneering. But in developed democracies, political parties as an institution are active because they are not only limited to election and recruitment of membership.

  • Has Ganduje kept his promises as APC chairman?

Has Ganduje kept his promises as APC chairman?

Former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje became the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when the party’s public image was low and internal cohesion poor. Correspondent JIDE ORINTUNSIN examines how the party has fared under his leadership

On assumption of office on August 3, 2023, as the 6th National Chairman of Africa’s largest political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje left no one in doubt of his resolve to hit the ground running in repositioning the party to play its role as the ruling party of the country.

He emerged at a period when the public perception of the ruling party, despite its victory at the general elections, was nose-diving at an alarming rate. This was at a time when members’ confidence in the leadership of the party was equally on the slope of the graph. When members of the party’s highest administrative organ, the National Working Committee (NWC) were in discordant tunes with themselves; the cohesion and harmony between the party and government were nothing but suspect. It was also a time when the morale of the staff of the party was at its lowest ebb.

The intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and some leaders of the party, especially the strong advocacy by a few members of the NWC, championed by former National Vice Chairman (Northwest), Salihu Moh. Lukman finally set the stage for the August 3 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that produced the Ganduje-led NWC to complete the term of the ousted Senator Abdullahi Adamu/Senator Iyiola Omisore-led committee.

A tested politician, Ganduje saw his emergence as a rare opportunity to change the narrative. He was very categorical about his mission. Addressing the NEC at the time, Ganduje unveiled his plans. Not unmindful of the poor integrity perception of the party among party members and Nigerians, the former Kano State governor, assured party leaders and members of his resolve to turn the table and improve on the fortune of the party.

He said: “Let me assure you that as national chairman, I will lead with integrity, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility. We are going to work tirelessly for a cohesive APC and a united, peaceful, and prosperous Nigeria. It will be challenging but with dedication, I have confidence that we can achieve a prosperous APC.

“Our main focus will be promoting party unity and defending and increasing the number of executive and legislative seats we currently hold. Under my watch, internal democracy will be strictly adhered to with a deliberate policy to engage in wider consultations and make the party functional throughout the year.

“More reforms will be carried out in the party in alignment with the current political landscape. We all agreed that we must unite our members to achieve support for our government to respond adequately, urgently, and assertively to the challenges that Nigerians confront daily.”

In line with his promise to change the fortunes of the party, Ganduje’s first mission was to bring back life to the inactive Muhammadu Buhari House. No sooner he resumed, various activities sprang up at the party office. The human traffic daily confirms the status of APC as the ruling party. Ganduje’s charismatic disposition to leadership brought life to the party headquarters, which had gone into comatose since the year began for little or no significant party activities.

    Local and international recognition:

Various support groups and state chapters took turns to pledge their readiness to work with the new leader. The massive courtesy visits were not limited to local groups. International groups, party members in the Diaspora and envoys also took advantage of Ganduje’s vision and mission to identify with the party.

Despite being in power for over nine years, the party’s global recognition has never been as pronounced as it is today under Ganduje’s able leadership. As the last count in the last four months, no fewer than five ambassadors and heads of missions have visited and expressed readiness to partner with the party. The British High Commissioner, Ghanian High Commissioner, Jamaican High Commissioner, and North Korean and Venezuelan Ambassadors among others.

It is equally on record that the status and the popularity of the party under the leadership of Ganduje continue to spread even beyond the shores of the country. The meteoric and phenomenal growth of the party and the leadership provided by Ganduje in the last four months have made it a role model in Africa. Ghanaian ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently extended hands of fellowship to Africa’s largest political party.

In the words of Stephen Ntim, Ghana’s NPP National Chairman during a visit to the country during the last Nigeria’s independent day celebration noted that his party has a lot to learn from Ganduje and Nigeria’s ruling party, the APC.

Hear him: “As a party, we have a lot to learn from Ganduje as an individual, and from the APC as a political party.”

     Grassroots politics:

In fulfilment of his promise of taking the party to the grassroots, the Ganduje-led NWC introduced a new people-centred approach to campaign administration for the Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi governorship elections slated for November 12, 2023. Instead of the usual practice of inaugurating national campaign governorship councils for states in Abuja, the campaign councils were unveiled in the affected states thereby causing the people of the state to own their campaign.

This innovation, Salihu Ohere, a party loyalist from Kogi state helped engage the right people to organise and manage campaigns in the state for effective delivery before and during the election. He further explained that the novel campaign method helped greatly to deliver the state in the just concluded Kogi State governorship election.

Political analyst, Chiamaka Nwafor also gave kudos to the Ganduje-led NWC for sustaining the party’s leading position in the country and for its outstanding performance in the off-session governorship elections in Imo and Kogi states.

    Reconciliation of aggrieved members:

Concerned by the disaffection the last general elections generated among party members, Ganduje promised to embark on massive reconciliation of aggrieved party members, a move that has yielded desired positive results for the party.

Through the instrumentality of diplomacy, the Ganduje-led NWC has within the time under review reached out to mend fences and differences among and between political tendencies within the party in various states. His efforts have produced a truce in Anambra State, Rivers State and recently Ondo State. The rift polarising the party in Oyo State is gradually been resolved.

    Defection of opposition members:

Another area of concern, of fulfilment is the promise by the former Kano State governor to improve the membership base of the party. This he has deftly achieved with the volume of members of the opposition trooping into the party in the last four months Ganduje has been at the saddle.

His leadership style has dealt a big blow to major opposition parties and attracted A-rated politicians to the party from the opposition. Today, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party ( NNPP)and the Youth Progressives Party (YPP) are yet to come to terms with the calibre of his leaders and members that dumped them for the ruling party. Courtesy of the leadership APC is providing through Ganduje.

It is on record that the NNPP in one sweep lost some of its former National Working Committee members to APC. Prof. Rufai Alkali, former NNPP National Chairman led other leaders and members to APC. They include Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, NNPP’s former National organising Secretary and former National Legal Adviser, Prof. Ben Angwe along with their teeming supporters.

Another opposition leader that Ganduje’s leadership virtues have attracted to APC is Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the lawmaker representing Anambra South Senatorial District. He dumped YPP for the ruling APC, he was categorical on why he shifted base.

Advancing reasons for his action, Ubah in a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio said, cording to him, “The letter reads: “I am willing to formally notify and inform the Distinguished Senate President and our colleagues of inconsiderable differences between me and the leadership of my party (YPP). I therefore resolved to move from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the most important party in Africa, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“As a dedicated politician and representative of my people, this has become exigent at this period of my political career and public service.

“After thorough evaluation of the political landscape in Nigeria particularly, the good works being done by the All Progressives Congress since the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the President of Nigeria, I have come to the realization and conclusion that the All Progressives Congress is better suited to champion the ideals and principles that can move Nigeria forward.

“The APC’s commitment to good governance, economic development and social progress resonate deeply with my conviction and the alignment of each member on key national issues for achieving the promises of any decent politician and particularly the promises that I made to my constituents to better the lot of all of them.”

The crossing over of Senator Uche Ekwunife from the PDP to the APC in Anambra State was another fulfilment of Ganduje’s promise to strengthen the APC base and acceptability, especially in the Southeast region of the country.

    Electronic membership registration:

Disturbed by the votes garnered by the party at the 2023 Presidential election as against the 40 million membership strength, Ganduje planned to conduct a more credible scientifically-proven membership register from the wards to the local government, state and national levels.

Hear him; “We will deploy technology in the registration of our members. The idea that the current figure of the membership of the party is over 40 million but could not reflect the result of the last election, where we got only eight million votes, means that it can no longer be business as usual.

“We are going to carry out a scientific registration of members of our great party. We are going to embark on registration from wards to Local Government and the state,” he promised.”

To drive home this promise, Ganduje during a Christmas visit with members of NWC to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assured the party’s National Leader of plans to commence the electronic membership registration drive before the end of the first quarter of the new year.

One major project that will finally redefine Ganduje’s leadership is the proposed establishment of the National Institute of Progressive Studies. His target for the commencement of the think-tank institute is also slated for the New Year.

For many party members and political observers, the Kano State-born politician so far has kept to some of his promises, however, in the new year, the former two-term governor of Kank State will have to concentrate more on consolidating the gains of his leadership by properly positioning the party for the task of providing leadership for other political parties in the country and indeed Africa.

  • APC to launch e-registration, institute of progressive studies in 2024 — Ganduje

APC to launch e-registration, institute of progressive studies in 2024 — Ganduje

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has perfected plans to launch its electronic registration to expand its reach as well as develop a reliable database.

The national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, who disclosed this to journalists on Thursday, December 28, in Lagos after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) met with President Bola Tinubu, also revealed plans by the party to establish a National Institute of Progressive Studies.

Ganduje said the NWC was in Lagos for two reasons; to felicitate with the President for the Christmas/New Year festivities and to commiserate with him over the deaths of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and former Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba.

Asked what Nigerians should expect from the ruling APC in the new year, the party Chairman said both the party and the government will do more for Nigerians in the new year.

“Nigerians should expect more from the government of the federation and the APC as an institution. You have seen how we have started forging ahead in order to increase the coverage of the party in terms of having more states for the party, more members of National Assembly, state assemblies, and we are continuing to do that.

“I believe we have some innovations for the party, because now we’re introducing e-registration of our own political party, where our members will be electronically registered so that we have a database that we can rely upon, that we can plan that we can be able to expand the party.

“Also, we have in our programme for the establishment of National Institute of Progressive Studies, so that we enlighten our members, even members of the public in Nigeria, on the doctrine of democracy, on the issues of internal democracy, issue of avoiding hate speeches, and also issues of abiding by the rules of the law pertaining to election and other processes.

“So, you can see that this institution will work with the government in terms of coming up with appropriate policies that are conducive for democracy”, he said.

  • Party activities will witness radical change, says Ganduje

Party activities will witness radical change, says Ganduje

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Umar Ganduje, has emphasised that it is not going to business as usual as the party is changing the narratives, where previously political parties only become active during electioneering.

Dr Ganduje made the remarks at the commissioning of the renovated APC Secretariat in Makurdi, yesterday.

The APC chairman stated that this administration has decided to make APC active throughout the campaigns.

He said: “Because of this, we have designed a blueprint where all our political party offices right from ward level, local government level, state level, zonal level and National level, be made habitable, functional and operational across 8,803 wards of this country.

“So by this short sermon, you are confirming to us that you have accepted this directive that has been given by our great party.”

He expressed joy in seeing the Secretariat of APC in Benue, being renovated, rehabilitated and decorated and thanked Comrade Austin Agada’s leadership for naming the Secretariat Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu House and its Conference Hall after his name.

“I know this is the home of APC, but I know after some time, APC went on sabbatical leave and I am happy the sabbatical leave has ended and APC is back in Benue State,” he said.

The APC National Chairman stated that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), whose office is the backbone of the present administration, is the Chief implementer of public policies of the administration.

“Let me also thank your Governor, a God-fearing person, a person that I find so simple. Cooperate with the SGF and the Governor, this is the only way that we can continue to forge ahead,” he said.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, commended the leader of the APC in the state and Senator Akume, for ensuring that the party structure works to achieve the existing unity in the party.

He also commended the leadership of the party for acquiring a befitting secretariat that houses different activities of the party, saying the benefits of democracy will continue to flow into Benue State, now that they have stabilised and entrenched themselves within the dimension of progressive politics.

Benue State Chairman of APC, Comrade Austin Agada, noted that APC in Benue is solidly behind Tinubu’s administration, to succeed as the country is in dire need of someone who would lift her out of poverty.

According to him, before the general elections, APC in the state had a few members in both the State and National Assembly but emerged victorious after the election with President Tinubu winning massively alongside two out of three senators, members of the House of Representatives, State Assembly and the Governor also won by the APC.

Agada said Benue is APC and vowed to remain behind the Ganduje-led APC and President Tinubu-led administration, commending the SGF for donating the secretariat building to the party and the NASS caucus for supporting the funding of the Secretariat.

He assured that the party will not relent in supporting Senator Akume, to succeed in the task of carrying out the policies and programmes of President Tinubu’s administration.

Let’s maintain spirit of hope, Ganduje urges Nigerians

Nigerians, especially Christians, got a piece of advice yesterday from the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. They should keep hope alive under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

He said with hope, the people can ignite progress and determination to build a better future.

This advice was contained in Ganduje’s goodwill message to mark this year’s Christmas celebration through his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu.

The party chair said the nation’s strength lies in the unwavering optimism and the resilience of its citizens, stressing that “together, we can achieve this greatness.”

Highlighting the essence of the celebration, he noted that the season is a time to reflect on the love and blessings bestowed upon Christians by Christ’s birth.

Ganduje urged Nigerians to embrace the virtues of the spirit of hope, sacrifice, peace and joy that defined the lifestyle of Jesus.

The chairman urged every Christian to, in the spirit of unity and togetherness; cherish the love they have for one another and to extend acts of kindness and compassion to the less fortunate.

The statement reads: “Let us use this season of goodwill to build bridges, mend relationships, and promote harmony within our communities.
