The New Nigerian People Party (NNPP) government of Kano State, has said that the immediate past All Progressives Congress (APC) government of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, left the state with a debt burden of N500 billion.

Deputy Governor of the State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stated this in Kaduna while chairing the North-West Zonal Meeting of NNPP emphasized that the debt owed by the past government may be in excess of N500 billion, at the end of the ongoing verification process.

The Deputy Governor at a meeting chaired by the party’s Northwest Chairman, Shehu Bello, said the huge debt burden had impeded the smooth take-off of the NNPP government in Kano. He said, “We came into office inheriting a government that left us with nothing but debt. Initially, it was N300 billion, but now it is approaching N500 billion, and we are still counting. Once we complete the assessment, we will inform Nigerians, especially our fellow Kano residents, about the total debt left behind.”

Ganduje wants constitutional roles for deputy governors

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for specific constitutional roles for deputy governors in Nigeria to keep them busy.

Ganduje said this at an annual conference of the Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria (FFDGN) with the theme: “Partnering in the shared vision for good governance and sustainable development” in Abuja.

Ganduje, represented by Mr Emma Eneukwu, the APC Deputy National Chairman, South, said that assigning constitutional roles would prevent unnecessary clash between governors and their deputies.

“I am happy that you the deputy governors, have decided to come together and form yourself into a forum and embark on this advocacy.

“As you create awareness, as you meet people and talk to leaders of our country, there is need to constitutionally give roles to the deputy governors,” he said.

Also speaking former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi advised political leaders to be guided by patriotism in all their endeavours.

He said that nothing was wrong with the Nigeria Constitution, but the inability to observe it.

“There are some of us who feel that the constitution is an invalid document, it is illegitimate, it is a product of the military. Even if it is a broken down vehicle it is the vehicle.

“It is a good constitution; there is nothing wrong with it. However good a constitution is, it is not a self-executing document, it doesn’t enforce itself. It requires good people to enforce it.

“Of course it is not intended to be a perfect document, but this nation must begin to respect the constitution.

“We must begin to respect the nation’s history and not go on describing it as an artificial creation. As we hear so many people doing. There is no nation that is not artificial. All nations are artificial,” he said.

Agabi, who was the chairman of the occasion, appealed to people in power to come to terms with those who agreed with them.

He appealed to the Federal Government to make the nation self-reliance, tackle corrupt and released dissidents in prison to allow them contribute their quota to national development.

“I appeal to the federal government to release all those dissidents who are in detention so that they can come out to unite the state and move it forward.

“I am not afraid of those dissidents, bring them over, release them, let them recognise that we can teach them unity and peace.

“For ever since we became an independent nation, we have been living in peace,” he said.

Agabi also urged Nigerians to come together and be united as a country.

‘’once a nation adopts presidential system of government, unity is not optional.”

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. Gorge Akume, also appealed to the governors to find it expedient to delegate some relevant and key roles to their deputies.

Akume, represented by a Director in SDF office, Mr Simon Tyungu, said such would give them a sense of belonging.

“Nigeria is presently facing a lot of very demanding challenges and this is because the effect of governance is not being felt by the majority of Nigerians at should be.

“To this end, I want to use this platform to advocate for a shared national vision between the federal government, state government and local government to be implemented within four years.

“This will be in form of the three tiers agreeing on very critical projects, that is the food and development centre,” he said.

Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara and the Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) urged all serving and former governors and their deputies to continue to work together for nation building.

“One recognizes your contribution to nation building and engagement in national and subnational discourse.

“Your experiences and institutional memories and knowledge must not be allowed to go to waste.

“I urge us all to work together, governors, deputy governors, former deputy governors, to work together in nation building.

“The NGF looks forward to a greater and robust collaboration and engagement with this forum,“ AbdulRazaq said.

The Chairman of the forum, Mr Chris Akomas, pledged the forum’s commitment to continue to strive hard in the quest for nation-building and in the bid to deepen Nigeria’s democratic process.

Akomas, a former Abia deputy governor, said the objective of the summit was to proffer workable solution and better understanding to eliminate the incessant rifts between Governors and their deputies.

“We have evolved over the years and have come up to the stage where we need to play critical roles to advance the cause of building on our democratic structures.

“Also to up the ante, in the Nation- building efforts of the forum, in order to positively touch more lives in the polity,” Akomas said.

He said that following the 2022 forum’s national conference in Uyo, members were compiling a book on their experiences in office.

He said that the book when published would serve as reference materials the public to get insights of the gamut of challenges faced by the deputy governors and suggestions on how to mitigate such,” he said.(NAN)

Impeachment: Ondo Assembly shuns Ganduje peace move, asks CJ to constitute panel

Details have emerged on why the Ondo State House of Assembly jettisoned a move by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop its move to impeach the Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, had met with a delegation of the Ondo Assembly led by its speaker, Oladiji Olamide, where it was resolved that the impeachment process be put on hold to allow for a political solution to the crisis.

It was gathered that one of the clauses at the meeting was for Aiyedatiwa to withdraw various cases he filed to stall the impeachment.

Sources said the Ondo Assembly opted to continue with the impeachment process when it received no notice that Aiyedatiwa had withdrawn the cases.

On Monday, October 23, the speaker Oladiji wrote a letter to the Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, to constitute a panel to investigate allegations raised against Aiyedatiwa in line with Section 188 (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Speaker Oladiji reminded Justice Odusola that the restraining Order of an Abuja High Court has elapsed or became extinguished by the operation of the law, in view of the provisions of Order 26 Rule 10(2) & (3) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2019.

Oladiji said the court has not heard the Motion the Assembly filed to discharge the Order and/or strike out the case for want of jurisdiction.

According to the letter, “The Court has not taken the application or renewed the Order, as evident in the Certified True Copy of the Court’s record of proceedings for October 9, 2023 and October 16, 2023.

“In fact, in Exhibit ODHA3, it was recorded that the motion was served on the Plaintiff in Court on October 9, 2023, after which the matter was adjourned to October 16, 2023.

“In view of the above facts, your lordship would agree that the said Order has elapsed by the operation of the law, and no longer constitutes an encumbrance for your lordship to discharge the sacred constitutional obligation placed on your office by virtue of Section 188(5) of the Constitution to set up the Seven-man Panel.

“Consequently, the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly hereby calls on your lordship to kindly constitute the Panel without any further delay.”

The majority Leader of the Assembly, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, insisted that the impeachment process was never suspended.

Ogunmolasuyi said the Assembly did not receive any evidence that Aiyedatiwa withdrew the court cases.

The Majority Leader said 23 lawmakers agreed that the Chief Judge should constitute the Panel.

He noted: “Should we wait for the party before we perform our duty? As an arm of government, we have followed due process and the impeachment process has never been suspended.

“This is a constitutional issue. There is an allegation which we have furnished the Deputy Governor and he has not replied.”

    Ganduje attacks Kwankwaso

    • He will remain serial presidential poll loser

National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, yesterday took a swipe on the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the February 25 presidential poll, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Ganduje said the one-time Kano governor will remain a serial loser in presidential elections.

The rivalry between the two Kano politicians was reopened by the return of the NNPP candidate in the March 18 governorship election in Bauchi State, Haliru Dauda Jika, and his supporters.

The APC chair spoke yesterday at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja while hosting Sen. Jika, who formally returned to the ruling party.

According to Ganduje, the pursuit of what he called “selfish interest against national interest” would continue to hinder the realisation of Kwankwaso’s ambition.

He also said his erstwhile boss’ inability to maintain a “principled stand” in party politics over the years will also work against the former Defence minister.

Hailing Jika’s decision to return to the APC fold as a step in the right direction, the chairman noted that the former NNPP flag bearer must have found his stint in the Kwankwasiyya-backed’ NNPP as “deceitful and exploitative”.

Receiving Jika and the other defectors with the entire Bauchi NNPP structure, Ganduje said: “When I got the news that you were coming to see me in my house to discuss the way forward, I knew I was meeting a very formidable politician in the person of Senator Jika who is a household name in Bauchi state.

“He is returning to a party that is very progressive and focused when we look at where he was coming from. He is coming from a party that used to be a decent party and highly-respected but was later hijacked and polluted by the Kwankwasiya group.

“We are happy that the original NNPP is taking back its proper position and leaving the Kwankwasiya group deserted and thrown out completely.

“The Kwankwasiyya group headed by the former Kano state governor was forced to go into a sabbatical leave for eight years before it found its way back to Government House in Kano.

“The Kwankwasiya head who wears a red cap is the person who prefers to be a king in hell than be a servant in paradise. He specialises in deceiving people. He was first in PDP and came back to APC when it was formed. That was when the (New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) merged with the legacy parties to form the APC.

“Instead of staying in APC because of his ambition, he decided to leave APC after failing to pick the presidential ticket to go back to the PDP. He could not stay there again when he failed to pick up the ticket.

“He still went on his own to contest the presidential poll and was defeated twice. He is a professional contestant for presidential elections and would remain a professional failure. He loves himself so much. I am happy you have dumped the red cap. It is a very sensible action that you have taken.”

Ganduje promised the returnees of inclusiveness in the local chapter of the APC in Bauchi State as part of an ongoing effort to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 poll.

According to him, the party felt bad with its performance during the general election in the Northeast state.

He carried out a symbolic change by removing the red cap, usually worn by the Kwankwasiya group and replacing it with the unbroken chain insignia cap of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to receive Jika and his group to the APC fold.

Jika later told reporters that his decision to return to APC was informed by the wishes of his teeming supporters in Bauchi state.

He said: “My dumping NNPP for APC has nothing to do with the presidential candidate of NNPP. I have no issue with Kwankwaso. The interest of Bauchi State informed my returning to APC.”

Admitting that Vice President Kashim Shettima and the First Lady, Sen Remi Tinubu, also influenced his decision to return to the APC fold, the Ninth Assembly senator pledged to remain loyal to the ruling party and to ensure its victory come 2027 in Bauchi and at the federal levels.

Ganduje to Nigerians: Tinubu’s livestock reforms will guarantee peace

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said that the proposed reform by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the livestock sector of the economy is targeted at promoting peace in the country.

He said this yesterday in Abuja while hosting the Network of Fulani Women and Child Rights Education Association in his office.

Ganduje, who was reacting to the requests made by the leadership of the tribal group, said a committee set up by him when he was the governor of Kano State on farmers-herders clashes has since submitted their report to the President, maintaining that their recommendations provided how to end the persistent bloody clashes between the two groups.

“Livestock Reform in Nigeria is mainly for the peace and stability of the country. It is not only for the Fulani but for everybody, because the problem of the Fulani, as we have seen, which degenerated into security challenge, is affecting everybody.

“It is not only the Fulani, it is for all the tribes irrespective of their ethnic nationalities or religion.

“I am happy that the report is all-encompassing as far as livestock is concerned in this country.

“We have recently forwarded the report to Mr. President and the blueprint for implementation.

“We also requested the establishment of offices of livestock in some relevant agencies.”

Ganduje, who traced the cause of the clashes, expressed confidence that the implementation of the report would put an end to the avoidable herdsmen-farmers clashes.

“First of all, what we are saying is that herdsmanship is not a tradition and it is not a religion. Herdsmanship is a commercial venture that in those years the relationship between herdsmen and farmers was symbiotic because the farmers were benefiting from the manure from the cow while the herdsmen were enjoying the grasses by the farmers.

“But with the advent of modern fertiliser, the farmers don’t need the cow’s dung while the herdsmen have not gotten any improved type of grass.

“So you can see now that the relationship is parasitic, not symbiotic. That is the basis of the problem.

“So we want to reform herdmanship. We want them to be settled in one place, being provided with water, veterinary and artificial insemination for their cows.

“The women can also rest assured there’ll be a school for their children. There’ll be mosques, markets and everything. Even the milk that they are producing will be processed in a better way.

“You can see that if this report is implemented, all of these conflicts will be resolved.”

Earlier, the leader of the team, Zuwera Ibrahim Ahmed, complained of the challenges being faced by Fulani women in carrying out their dairy business in the face of the conflict between farmers and herdsmen.

She demanded that the APC-led government should proffer lasting solutions to the clashes between the herders and farmers, which she lamented, have claimed many lives and crippled the sector.
