    • Assures local government autonomy still in progress

Modalities for the implementation of local government autonomy are being sorted out by the federal government, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, said yesterday in Lagos.

Gbajabiamila said effective grassroots governance was impossible without full autonomy at the local government level.

The Chief of Staff spoke after casting his vote at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial Primary School, Surulere, during the Lagos State council election.

He described last year’s verdict of the Supreme Court on local government autonomy as a major step forward for grassroots governance.

A major plank of the apex court’s ruling was the order that the monthly revenue share of the LGs from the Federation Account should be paid to them directly.

But one year down the line, the funds are still paid through the state governments, leaving the LGs without control over their finances.

But addressing the issue yesterday, Gbajabiamila said it was imperative for government to first deal with the challenges of LG autonomy before full implementation.

“The challenge lies in execution and implementation,” he said.

He added: “I believe that in time we will achieve full local government autonomy.

“That’s what we’re working towards. The Supreme Court’s pronouncement is law. In time, autonomy will be fully realised.”

…welcomes coalition, says it’s good for democracy

Gbajabiamila also spoke on the coalition talks by opposition leaders and their adoption of African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a common platform.

He described the development as a healthy sign for democracy and a move that could promote broader political engagement across Nigeria’s multi-party system.

He said the presence of alternative voices in the political space was important for national progress and political maturity.

A functioning democracy, according to him, must accommodate opposition voices to prevent the emergence of a one-party system.

He said the strength of any democracy lies in a vibrant and credible opposition that can hold the ruling party accountable.

“There has to be some level of opposition in a democracy,” Gbajabiamila told reporters.

He noted that without checks and balances, democracy could easily slip into authoritarianism, which would undermine public trust in governance.

However, he was skeptical about the future and effectiveness of the coalition formed around the ADC.

His words: “For whatever the coalition is worth, I am not sure where it will go — that is if it will go anywhere.”

He was not happy at the low voter turnout across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas in Lagos.

“There is generally low turnout so far, perhaps because many do not understand the importance of local government elections,” he said.

“In some countries, this level of election is even more important than others. We must sensitise and educate our people more.”

But he said the election was generally “peaceful, free, fair and calm — and that’s what we all desire in any democratic process.”

Tinubu hails Gbajabiamila’s role in deepening democracy on birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to his Chief of Staff, Hon. Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila, praising his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, legislative development, and the transformation of Lagos State, particularly his Surulere constituency.

In a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, to mark Gbajabiamila’s birthday, President Tinubu described the former Speaker of the House of Representatives as a “salutary contributor” to the country’s democratic journey and a devoted public servant whose impact continues to resonate both at the national and grassroots levels.

“President Tinubu underscores Gbajabiamila’s salutary contributions to Nigeria’s fledgling democracy and the legislature, where he spent much of his political career,” the statement said.

Gbajabiamila, a trained lawyer, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003.

Over two decades of legislative service, he emerged as one of the most influential parliamentarians in the country’s democratic dispensation, holding key positions such as Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and ultimately, Speaker from 2019 to 2023.

Tinubu also noted his Chief of Staff’s longstanding dedication to the development of Lagos State.

Gbajabiamila’s work in Surulere, he said, is marked by consistent delivery of public infrastructure, empowerment programs, and strategic representation.

As Chief of Staff since 2023, Gbajabiamila has become a central figure in the day-to-day running of the presidency, helping to coordinate the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The President encouraged him to sustain his efforts in service to the nation, stating, “Continue supporting the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda to create a better, more economically viable, and more prosperous Nigeria.”

President Tinubu concluded by wishing Gbajabiamila a long life and continued good health.

Universities must seek alternative means of funding outside government, says Gbajabiamila

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that universities must begin to look for alternative sources of funding to augment what they get from the government.

Delivering a lecture at the Sound state University on the topic “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global Versus Nigerian Perspectives”, the former Speaker said Universities in other parts of the world have developed ways of raising funds for their activities.

Gbajabiamila, who spoke of how to effectively, sustainably and productively fund tertiary education in Nigeria, said giving people the intellectual resources, skills and confidence to navigate the global knowledge economy is very crucial.

He said, “I have long believed that investing in people by providing opportunities for education and skills acquisition not only changes the individual’s life, but also offers the best possibility of transformational impact on the well-being of our society”.

He maintained that the primary purpose of education is to improve the individual’s mind and body and empower them to be useful to themselves and beneficial to society, saying “a good education should produce an individual who is confident in their abilities, capable of logical thought, and aware of their shortcomings but not constrained by them,” he said.

Gbajabiamila noted that though the government is doing its best to fund universities and other institutions of learning, tertiary institutions, particularly universities, should seek other ways in order to properly fund the schools.

He said some universities in the United States of America conduct research and development activities to develop intellectual property that can be created, transferred, or licensed for commercial value.

“Stanford Management Company, Columbia Investment Management Compan,y and the Harvard Management Company are all wholly owned investment companies of their eponymous universities.

“These companies manage the financial assets of their respective universities by investing in established businesses and startups, managing real estate holdings and various financial instruments to help ensure these universities have the financial resources to remain world-class institutions,” he said.

Gbajabiamila, who sponsored the Students loan Act said as a member of the House of Representatives and later Speaker, he sponsored and ensured the passage into law of the Students Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act 2023, which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law in one of his earliest official actions as President.

According to him, the law established the national student loan program to ensure that the doors of public tertiary institutions will never be closed against capable and willing candidates solely based on an inability to pay whatever fees are required.

He said, “I hope that this sort of policy thinking will inspire others in this room and beyond to take a critical look at the question of tertiary education funding and see the universe of possibilities that exist if we are willing to put in the effort today so that our children’s tomorrow can be better than all our yester years”.

Gbajabiamila also commended the Nigerian parliament, particularly investigative committees like Public Accounts, Public Assets, among others, for unravelling several issues which have helped the government positively.

Gbajabiamila to Adeleke: you and your exco are doing a good job

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has lauded Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and members of his executive council (exco) for doing a good job.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives gave this commendation while speaking at the Government House in Osogbo before he delivered the first annual lecture of Osun State University (UNIOSUN).

He said the governor had prioritised governance over politics in his dealings with the Federal Government.

“I must say you and members of your team are doing a phenomenal job in the state and on the national pedestal,” Gbajabiamila said.

He said the state had pushed forward some of its finest members to the National Assembly, noting that the good job being done by  Bamidele Salam as the chairman of the House Committee on Public Account had enabled the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to plug some holes that served as conduit pipes for corruption.

Noting that he was in Osun State to deliver a lecture on funding for education at the maiden edition of UNIOSUN Annual Lecture, Gbajabiamila appreciated the governor for a warm reception accorded him and his entourage.

Gbajabiamila urges reform in varsity curriculum, conduct to tackle funding gaps

Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s university system to address persistent funding challenges affecting their operations.

Speaking on Tuesday at the maiden annual lecture of Osun State University titled, “Interrogating Funding of Education: Global versus Nigerian Perspectives”, Gbajabiamila emphasized the need to revamp university curricula, modernize teaching methods, improve access to technology, and provide decent accommodation for students.

He also stressed the importance of ethical governance within institutions, calling for zero tolerance for misconduct such as plagiarism, cultism, and sexual harassment.

Highlighting the current state of higher education, Gbajabiamila revealed that the Federal Government runs 64 universities while state governments operate 63, numbers he said are inadequate for Nigeria’s rapidly growing population.

While noting that education is a right, he clarified that it is not free. He disclosed that the Federal Government allocated N2.18 trillion to education in 2024, the second-highest budgetary allocation after national security.

However, he lamented that Nigerian universities still lag behind their African and global counterparts in terms of standards and resources.

Comparing Nigeria’s funding model to those of other countries, Gbajabiamila noted that in-state students in the UK and US pay about £9,535 and $8,914 annually, respectively, while international students pay £38,000 and $19,081, underscoring the cost burden and funding expectations in global education systems.

He said, “The financial contributions of international students are a significant revenue stream for universities worldwide, helping to subsidise university education for the citizens of those countries. Policymakers and university administrators in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and even Africa have long implemented policies and strategies to boost the enrollment of international students.”

He added that Africa countries like Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa have efforts to boost funding of public universities by attracting International students.

“Public universities in Nigeria can and should also look to increase their international profiles

to become attractive destinations for international students willing and able to pay fees that might otherwise be practically and politically inexpedient for native students.

“Like the embassies of other nations in Nigeria, our embassies around the world can become very effective avenues for reaching out to a global market of students.”

He added that academia must collaborate with private sector to create a robust ecosystem for innovation, research commercialisation and economic growth thereby boost job creation.

THE Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has launched a scheme, GbajaRide, that will provide free transport to primary and secondary as well as the elderly that are 65 years and above in Surulere Local Government Area.

At the official launch of the scheme on Saturday, 33 mini and medium buses were unveiled to drive the project.

Speaking at the event, Gbajabiamila stated that he is not tired of serving the people of Surulere, stating that serving Surulere has been good stress for him.

He emphasized that the purpose of government is to allow people pursue and achieve their God-given ambition.

Justifying the need for the scheme, Gbajabiamila who donated 13 units of 32-seaters and 20 units of 18-seater King Long branded buses, said: “The purpose of government, and indeed the point of all public service, is to create the conditions that allow individuals and society to pursue their God-given ambitions, achieve success by the strength of their own endeavors, and thrive through the best efforts. Now, this recognition of the role of government underpins the Renewed Hope programme of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It informs all the policy, political, and administrative decisions this administration has taken since assuming office nearly two years ago.”

Expatiating, the former Speaker said: “The Gbaja Ride programme we are launching today is also a product of that determination to use the instruments of government at all levels to ease the lives of our people and empower our citizens to do more and achieve greater things. Access to safe, efficient, and reliable public transport services is imperative in the local environment at large. Access to these services, especially for young children in school, for older people, for the less able, and for all those who struggle with their income, can be the difference between succeeding in school or failing because of a lack of regular attendance.”

While noting that the free ride scheme is in partnership with the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Agency (LAMATA), Gbajabiamila assured that besides school students, the aged, the buses would be available to all other residents for intra-city shuttles at a steep discount of 25% below the pre-payment rates for all the routes where these buses will be available.

The former lawmaker representing Surulere 1 federal constituency, who reiterated that the free transport scheme was his own modest contribution to ameliorate the sufferings of the downtrodden masses, however urged all political appointees to ensure that they continue to contribute their quota to uplift the constituents.

“I believe by doing this, we have in our own little way contributed to the development of the society. If you look at the world over, any thriving economy, whether it’s America, whether it’s Germany, whether it’s South Africa, whether it’s Uganda, whether it’s Ghana, there is no economy that can thrive without a good transportation system. That is why in many countries, transportation is cheap.”

The President, he reiterated “has cleverly and rightfully removed subsidy from petrol. Very quietly, with his help, we have been able to at least here in Surulere subsidize transportation for our people. I think that is savings. The intervention is that those who need help the most, priority will always be given to our senior citizens.”

This is just as he revealed that he has written off the cost of salaries of 100 employees for the free transport scheme, insurance, fuel and other sundry expenses for three months, reiterated the need for other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate his gesture of charity giving which aims to impact the society at large. .

Speaking earlier, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), who also doubles as the Project Advisor, said the Gbaja Ride is a poverty alleviation scheme as it would enable subscribers save N20, 000 monthly and N240, 000 annually all thanks to the concession.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Olukemi Amure, who represented the Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, lauded the scheme, even as she assured of her agency’s commitment to sustain the gesture.

In his remarks, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Lagos chapter, described Gbajabiamila as not just the face of Surulere but also the party at large.

Ojelabi, who was represented by the Deputy State chairman of APC Moshood Mayeigun, said, “With your name (Gbajabiamila) alone we’re fit to go, we have 24 hour light in Surulere. It is worthy of commendation.”

The highpoints of the occasion was the formal commissioning of the buses by Gbajabiamila, who was joined by other dignitaries including former and serving political appointees, public servants, community leaders, royal fathers from Ikate, Ijora, Agboyi-Ketu, to mention just a few.

    Gbajabiamila and the resident forces

    • By Nasiru Mohammed

Anyone who knows the Chief of Staff to the president, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, fairly enough, will always scoff at the many nonsense so far alleged against his name. At best, these false narratives have only fed the starving political hawks their desperate meals, in and outside government. But none truthfully speaks to who he truly is.

I’m one of the many people, who can confidently speak about the character of this man, both from close and remote quarters, and I take pride in it. I knew him from the moment he ventured into politics and I’d followed his trajectory up until now, even though we do not share any personal relationship. This, however, is why I have learnt to laugh off the swirling misrepresentation about his person.

On Tuesday, October 8, the THISDAY newspaper did an interesting piece on the ‘notoriously’ popular Chief of Staff to the President. I describe him as notoriously popular because if you’ve followed the sort of things said and written about him on assumption of his current office, there’s the tendency to believe he was some preternatural creature capable of the impossible.

But he is not. At least, if there was anything that the article did – as objective and critical as it was – it established that Hon. Gbajabiamila is just another passenger – like you and I – in the corridors of power, doing his job to the best of his ability.

This is not to say he is infallible. Of course, he is and does not pretend to be either. But if we must point out anything about him or his management of the affairs of his current office, we have a responsibility to be as honest as possible. After all, facts don’t lie.

The culture of demonising people, especially those in sensitive political offices in order to make others feel good, is a fiendish culture that everyone must rise in unison against, because it is definitely antithetical to our collective growth, progress and development.

The cliché: “There’s no smoke without fire” is as plain as it is tricky. This is why circumspection is instructive when leveling allegations against others. At the minimum, an average right-thinking individual is expected to build a level of safety into whatever assumptions they’re  peddling or fondling with.

Unfortunately, in the case of Gbajabiamila, there’s no allegation so far leveled against him that has been established anywhere. Isn’t that curious? When the president came public to declare support for his chief of staff, doesn’t it suggest to any critical mind that such could have been informed by the findings of security investigations on the man?

Observing closely from a vantage position, it is becoming crystal clear that the forces against Gbajabiamila are a legion and may not give up easily or anytime soon. This is why I have identified them as the “resident forces” because they are mostly not just within but ‘living’ with him, somewhat.

Read Also:Desmond Elliott launches Femi Gbajabiamila U-16 football tournament for Surulere secondary schools

For the record, the forces are three in categories. The first category is made up of people I choose to call the “envious lot”. They do not hide the fact that they envy ‘the man’ that Gbajabiamila has become and desire to be like him. An average successful person goes about with such enemies, and it’s almost natural that such people accompany obvious success at all times.

This particular category of haters has followed his trajectory from day one, unknown to him, and had always wanted what he has. They could not comprehend why it has always been him because they consider his feats a function of luck and not hard work. Either way, they could not come to terms with why neither luck nor hard work gave them a chance, too.

Category number two consists of people who are trending at the moment. For the purposes of this intervention, call them the “Ambitious few”. They are the people who want his current job. Why must it be him again? After spending so many years in the House of Representatives with meteoric progression that saw him become the speaker, should he get this all-important job again?

Rather than ask his principal the reason he settled for him as against them, they aligned with those in category one to further escalate their enmity and make his work more difficult. But they forget that unless the man who appointed him feels otherwise, they have no say in the choice of his personal staff, more so one as critical as the chief of staff.

Welcome to the third category of the resident forces, and please feel free to identify this last but not least category as the “political mind-readers”. This is just another very interesting class of people. From Speaker to Chief of Staff, this third category has concluded, perhaps, having seen the future with their crystal ball, that Gbajabiamila’s next stop is the Lagos governorship.

For a man, who has neither mooted the idea nor shared it with anyone, least his wife, that he was interested in the Lagos governorship, this curious conclusion, which has accentuated the agitations by these hate groups, is to say the least, confounding.

Let’s drop the hate, antics, and political theatrics for a fleeting moment.  Is he not qualified to be governor if he chooses to throw his hat in the ring? What more qualifications does it require to be Lagos governor? A former speaker, after several years in the House of Representatives and now the chief of staff to the president, coupled with his sound education as a lawyer, he is very qualified, I must say.

But that is not on the card for him. If anything, he wants to acquit himself as the chief of staff to a successful president, God helping his principal. If at the end of the day, the owners and people of Lagos root for him, that’s their call, not his. How is anyone even sure he would say yes to such a call to service?

Like the Yoruba would say, the one who does not get a breather from the world around him and constantly getting controversial mentions, is much better than the individual consigned to the obscurity of history whilst he is still living. It’s at this point Gbajabiamila must admit that such unprovoked and undeserving attacks come with the job.

More importantly, he must also learn to objectively and with a plain mind, sift through criticisms, and take that which seeks to help make him better, either as an individual or on the job. The fact that he is not perfect in humanity presupposes that he, too, might have poorly handled certain matters, which could have pitted him against some powerful blocs.

However, seeking to throw away the bathwater with the baby is a pre-civilisation predisposition, which never allowed room for improvement or gave people multiple chances. And if people really understand that life, as much as power, is indeed transient, they would be moderate in their chase of vanity.

Taken together, while it is expected that the chief of staff considers some of these attacks as a challenge to be a better person through introspection and self-appraisal, it is definitely not a call for him to let down his guards, while the enemies regroup for more devastating onslaught.

Certainly, the last has not been heard of the resident forces, as well as their machinations against President Bola Tinubu’s chief of staff.

    • President’s achievements grossly underreported, says Rivers APC chair

The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed optimism about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued efforts to take Nigeria to greater heights.

Gbajabiamila spoke on Saturday night when he joined other senior officials of the administration to receive the President at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on his arrival from a two-week working vacation in the United Kingdom (UK).

He said: “He’s back to continue from where he left off, in terms of putting policies in place and making sure things are done right, making sure we’re going in the right direction. ⁣⁣

“He’s the pilot of the plane and he’s working to get to a cruising level, which is precisely where we’re going. In a matter of time, Nigerians will begin to see the fruits of his labour and our labour. ⁣

“Let’s all be expectant and hopeful, and we’ve been living the Renewed Hope, and Mr. President is back in Nigeria to continue the good work he’s doing.” ⁣

Gbajabiamila described President Tinubu’s break as a working holiday, saying his return was for more work.

“The kind of work he’s been doing in the past one and a half years requires some rest. He went to get some rest and he’s back now; he’s well rested, rejuvenated.⁣

“It was even just a working holiday anyway. So, he was working and resting at the same time. Now that he’s back in Nigeria, all hands are on deck, and he’s ready to go,” he said.

Also, Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the weekend acknowledged the current challenges in the country but assured Nigerians that President Tinubu’s administration would leave behind a lasting legacy that would guarantee a better future.

Akpabio, a law graduate of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), spoke at this year’s UNICAL ‘87 Law Class Re-Union, according to a statement by his media aide, Jackson Udom, yesterday in Abuja.

Addressing his old classmates and senators who accompanied him as well as UNICAL management workers and students, he said: “The difficulties we are witnessing in our nation today were not caused by the present administration. These are as a result of years of maladministration.

“Any country that does not have backbone infrastructure; you don’t have something to develop, you don’t save for the raining day, when there is an economic malaise, such as we are witnessing in the world today, such a country is bound to be affected.

“The good news is that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we have hope today. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. The things that we are trying to do now are for posterity, not for ourselves.

“Rest assured that this administration will leave behind lasting legacies that will guarantee a better future,” he said.

Also, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Rivers Caretaker Committee has said President Tinubu’s achievements were grossly underreported.

He said this while speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) news forum.

“President Tinubu’s achievements are not in the public domain because most of his ministers failed to do the needful and are not adding value to the administration and the country.

“Gone are the days when they said ‘don’t blow your trumpet yourself’. These days, you have to blow it loud,” he said.

Okocha noted that the wobbly economy President Tinubu inherited has made it difficult for his administration to move at a faster speed it planned before assuming office.

He said the President’s ministers and other top government officials were not publicising his achievements enough for the world to appreciate.

“The President’s achievements in less than two years are unsung. Until he has a broadcast, you won’t know what he has done.

“Someone has to be responsible for telling Nigerians what the administration is doing in the various ministries. All of those combined are the President’s achievements,” Okocha said.
