The Chief of Staff to the President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has issued a “cease and desist” notice to Segun Olatunji, editor of FirstNews, for alleged “false and malicious defamatory” articles published by him or pubublished off his interviews with a news platform.

Gbajabiamila, in two letters dated May 3, by his solicitors Dr. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) of Pinheiro LP, alerted the public to a “series of deliberate and coordinated malicious campaign of calumny against his person in print, electronic and social media platforms.”

The letter to Olatunji reads: “Our client’s attention has been drawn to the series of deliberate and coordinated malicious campaigns of calumny against his person in various print, electronic media and social media platforms arising from your article published January 28, 2024, (republished on April 6, 2024) and interview you granted to the same online media platform Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) on April 4, 2024, in relation to your arrest and detention by Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The letter demanded that Olatunji, “within seven days of receipt of this letter, cause to be published in two national newspapers a full page unequivocal public retraction and apology in terms to be approved by our firm; and in this regard we expect you to revert to us within three days of receipt of this letter. You shall also be expected to circulate the retraction and apology on the same platforms wherein your article and interview were circulated.”

It warned that unless Olatunji responds satisfactorily, Pinheiro LP would seek damages for libel, an injunction restraining him from further or similar publications, “an order for retraction of the defamatory words and a public apology in the terms and manners to be stipulated by us and published in at least two national papers.”

Furthermore, the law firm advised the “the public who are already indulged or may be tempted to indulge in the dissemination of these false and defamatory contents to cease and desist from sharing, posting, forwarding, or disseminating the said contents or otherwise engage in cyberstalking of our client, premised on the defamatory words contained in the aforementioned interview and article…’’

Gbajabiamila has been vindicated, says lawmaker

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North Federal constituency, Olaide Akinremi, has commended the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) for identifying the source of numerous disparaging articles on the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamilla.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 30, Akinremi said he was aware from the outset that the publications were nothing more than political victimization designed by a group of ineffective politicians who fear Gbajabiamila’s growing prominence.

“Some of us who were close to Honourable Gbajabiamila while he was majority leader in the House of Representatives, and it is no secret how close I was to him as a speaker, knew him to be a lover of the masses who would not break the law.

“Gbajabiamila has seen it all, and he has been on the radar of the ruling elite for years, but he has never misused that position. He has been vindicated,” he said.

The lawmaker added that putting an end to the needless distraction will allow Gbajabiamila to concentrate more on his work and help President Bola Tinubu fulfill the promises he made to the people during his election campaign.

He said: “I want to use this platform to remind young people to stop being tools in the hands of desperate politicians and start being productive.”

Tinubu determined to resolve power supply shortfall, estimated billing – Gbajabiamila

President Bola Tinubu is determined to resolve the lingering power supply shortfall, energy theft, estimated billing and stealing of power infrastructure, his Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila said on Saturday.

Gbajabiamila noted the Tinubu-led administration is working assiduously with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the challenges bedeviling the power sector is resolved within the shortest possible time frame.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives gave this assurance while inaugurating two units of 20MVA Injection substation in his Surulere Constituency, Lagos, which were facilitated during his tenure as Speaker.

Gbajabiamila, who was represented by Senator Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun(Lagos Central), further pledged the president’s commitment to improved electricity supply nationwide.

“Mr President has made an allocation of over N340 billion in the 2024 budget towards improving infrastructure in the power sector. President Tinubu is also concerned about cases of energy theft, estimated billing and stealing of power infrastructure,” Gbajabiamila said.

While expressing delight at the project, the CoS assured that it would help to improve power supply to Surulere environs including: Akerele, Randle, Ishaga, Ogunlana, Shitta, and Adelabu.

He said when he briefed him, the President “was pleased about this public–private sector partnership between the Federal Government and Eko Distribution company. We owe this dividend of democracy to Mr. President.”

Expatiating, Gbajabiamila said: “The Tinubu administration has shown its dedication to solving the power supply challenges of Nigeria from the get-go with the signing of the 2023 Electricity Act just days into taking over the reins of power of our country.

“Stakeholders and professionals have been engaged to achieve our dream of attaining a 24/7, uninterrupted power supply in our nation.”

He described the commissioning as “a testament to the power of partnership and the tireless efforts of all stakeholders involved.”

He praised the collaboration with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), alongside other stakeholders, saying it had been pivotal to the project.

“We have demonstrated what can be achieved when public and private entities join forces with a shared purpose,” he said.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, commended Gbajabiamila and the private-public partnership that resulted in the project.

He pledged that “in less than two years there’ll be segments of this city that will say bye bye to darkness.”

He urged the people to “Pay your bills, don’t beat up staff, don’t bypass metres. Change is here and for that change to have an impact all of us must behave responsibly.”

Gbajabiamila: Public life for public good

    • By Aliyu Abubakar

He is currently the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu. He has seen his political life course from the legislature to the executive. It’s not clear if Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila ever dreamt of this fortune as he stepped on the canvas of politics at the turn of this 4th Republic.

By every yardstick, it’s fair to say that he has had his path paved with golden confetti. A path of distinguished public service. And at every turn, Providence has placed him in a position others wished they were.

Elected for a record six times by the people of Surulere 1 Constituency of Lagos to represent them in the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila is a man fated to political longevity. And he has represented his people creditably. In the House, he had a voice. He was respected. Neither dumb nor dim-witted, he showed mastery of legislative sagacity; displayed candour and intelligence. Functioned in committees with distinction. Never static or decorative, he showed pomp, panache and depth. While in the House, the lawyer in him manifested in full plume. He showed people skills, networking dexterity and was easily relatable. No airs, sided with the weak and was always smart to connect with his constituents in Lagos. This made him popular both in his Surulere base and among his peers in the Green Chamber. In Surulere, for instance, his constituents would gleefully give an arm to defend him. He was welfarist as a lawmaker as he was empathetic. To his constituents, it’s Gbaja (they love to address him that way) or no one else.

Gbaja carries grace. He brought it to the House where he rose to become Minority Leader in the 7th Assembly and later the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 9th Assembly: Primus inter Pares (First among equals). As Speaker, he brought stability to the House, managing the high and low tides of boisterous men and women with organized stratagem.

He did not quit the House on account of court verdict, neither was he not returned by his constituents. He resigned voluntarily to assume office as Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, a higher calling. Even this speaks to his relevance and political capital in the eyes of Tinubu, himself a political grandmaster. Emerging Chief of Staff indexes his trust equity and how much the president trusts him. Chief of Staff means he is the one who organizes the office of the president, determines who sees him and acts as clearing house (Secretariat) of the president himself. It’s a position only reserved for trusted friends of the president, not just any jobber or political appointee.

Gbaja is trusted and trustworthy. Even the president attests to that. Tinubu is an intelligent political godfather who knows the place of loyalty in the political matrix. Every party in partisan politics places premium of fidelity of members to the creed and mores of the party. Gbaja, a student of Tinubu School of Political Leadership, has been faithful to Tinubu and his ideals. His collateral is his unrelenting loyalty and undiluted willingness to abide by the tenets of his party. Gbaja is neither treacherous nor lecherous. Some politicians mutate from one party to another in open show of political harlotry. Not so, Gbaja. He played the opposition with polished dignity, snubbed every bait to turncoat; was steadfast to his party and his leader, Tinubu. That is character. Gbaja has it.

Tinubu, a man who does not hold back to reward loyalty saw all this and has rewarded him with one of the most powerful offices in the presidency.

But this article is not about Gbaja’s fruitful political odyssey. An eventful public life, no doubt. This is about what Gbaja has done with his public life, not how he wielded power. Early this year, Nigerians were greeted with developmental news. An imposing architectural masterpiece, a 484-bed hall of residence was donated to the University of Lagos by Gbajabiamila. It was a fitting gift from a grateful heart to his alma mater. Gbaja is a law graduate of UniLag, proudly a Great Akokite!

The hostel gift is just what the university needs now. Nigerian tertiary institutions are challenged in the area of providing decent accommodation for their teeming students. In the case of UniLag, Gbaja scored a bull’s eye. The university which prides itself as the University of First Choice has been unable, like most universities, to provide on-campus accommodation for students. Many students have had to live off-campus where they are exposed to the horror of cultism and cultists, robbers and other drug-addled crooks lurking in off-campus neighbourhoods.

There have been several cases across the country where off-campus students were abducted and killed by unknown assailants; in some cases, robbed and other times became victims of gruesome murder. This is why the Gbaja gesture should be seen in the context of what it is: using public life to do public good.

Gbaja also built and donated to the Lagos State University (LASU), a state-of-the-art conference centre that not only adds grandeur to the LASU infrastructural landscape but also fills a critical void in the university’s event management routine. LASU, ranked as one of the best public universities in Law, has been growing in geometric leap. At the recent matriculation ceremony for 2023/2024 students, the Gbajabiamila hall was put to good use as the traditional hall for such event could not take all the students.

Without any shred of doubt, public office has been fair to Gbaja. But he’s not the only one whom public service has showered benevolence on. Some Nigerian public office holders, past and present, have reduced themselves into receptacles; always collecting, never giving back. Not Gbaja. He has been giving back to society. He has impacted his constituents and by implication the larger Nigerian society in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and direct empowerment of the frail and the poor.

The vice chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, was exultant at the inauguration ceremony. She said the facility is a critical infrastructural intervention especially at this time when the need for conducive spaces to carry out administrative and social engagements has become imperative.

She described the centre, inaugurated by Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as a beautiful edifice and a unique architectural monument that has enhanced the aesthetic landscape of the university.

By these two stand-out acts of kindness to humanity, Gbaja has pointed the way for all persons of goodwill, especially those fate thrust into the public service arena. Your service is not to self or family. To think or act so is wickedness. Your service is to the larger community. Use your public life to do public good. Nothing can be more honourable or nobler than this. For long after you’re gone, humanity will not remember that you owned the choicest automobiles, but they will remember the impact you had on the rest of the people. Good deeds are never forgotten, neither are those who do them. The place of Gbaja in the boulders of history is already etched in gold: Indelible, in our hearts.

Speaker Abbas spoke our mind in defending Gbajabiamila – Agbese

Deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has described Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as an institutional legacy of the National Assembly.

He said the Parliament would go all out to defend his integrity anytime.

Agbese was apparently speaking on the sidelines of the comments in some sections casting aspersions on the World Press Conference organised by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas last week on the state of the nation.

Abbas also addressed the incessant media attacks on the former Speaker Gbajabiamila and the endless allegations against him, advising those using social media instruments to attack him to cease forthwith, for the sake of his integrity and the sanctity of the institution of National Assemby.

But while reacting to questions from journalists in his office, shortly after the plenary on Wednesday evening, the Deputy spokesperson affirmed what the Speaker said during the World Press Conference was the collective opinion of the Members of the House.

“The Speaker was right and he has the backing of the entire parliament to do what he did,” Agbese said adding “Nigerians have long understood the personality of the Rt. Hon. Speaker as an advocate of the masses”.

The Deputy Spokesperson said the parliament is an institution and “all over the world, parliament is respected for its creations, antecedents and impacts on the society”.

Agbese further hinted that no “element” would be allowed to rubbish the image of citizens who have sacrificed their all for the good of the country.

“Those who hate Gbajabiamila should have a rethink. We all don’t have to like Femi. No. Everybody cannot like him.

But we will not allow vested interests to sacrifice Femi’s integrity,” he added.

Agbese further advised those making efforts to rubbish the integrity of Gbajabiamila to back out, stressing “that man has built a reputation and this cannot be sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity and frivolities”.

“People who served our country for many years, refused to steal or become wealthy from the public coffers should at least be respected and celebrated.

“Gbajabiamila spent over 20 years in National Assembly, where he served in various leadership capacities, as Minority Whip, Minority Leader, House Leader and eventually Speaker of the 9th House.

“I’m sure if his integrity was in question, the totality of the House, numbering 360 Representatives of the entire Nigerians, would not have entrusted him with much leadership responsibilities every other dispensations.

“That was all the Rt. Hon. Speaker tried to say in his speech at that press conference and the entire House is in agreement with Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, in defending the sanctity of the institution of the National Assembly, which is the only beacon of democracy in Nigeria.

“I said so because, during the military regimes, the executive and judiciary were functioning as arms of government, it was only the National Assembly that was muted. So, the institution of National Assembly is sacred and should not be toyed with. That is the only reason we can comfortably say we are practising democracy,” Agbese submitted.

Nigerians to reap benefits of subsidy removal soon – Gbajabiamila

Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to  President Bola Tinubu  has assured Nigerians that benefits of fuel subsidy removal would be reaped soon.

Gbajabiamila gave the assurance after casting his vote at Poling Unit 014, Ward 08 at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial School, Surulere, Lagos state, in the House of Representatives by-election in the constituency on Saturday.

The Chief of Staff in his reaction to the current economic situation being faced by Nigerians,  said the President  and his administration remained concerned about the plight of the people.

He, however, noted that it was a universal issue and must be handled with all caution.

According to him, the challenges we are facing are because some  fundamentals were missing in the first place.

“It is those economic fundamentals that this administration is trying to put in place,  including fuel subsidy removal which was a national concession that it must be removed.

“I assure you that the benefits of  subsidy removal will be reaped soon. It’s not immediate but the President knows what he is doing, and at the end of the day, everything will work out fine.”

On Insecurity, the chief of staff urged Nigerians to support the President and his administration rather than pointing fingers and making negative criticisms.

Gbajabiamila stated that security remained  everyone’s concern but assured that the President is deeply concerned and at the fore front of it all.

“This administration needs full cooperation of the people and in so doing, we will all defeat these kidnappers and terrorists.

“Therefore, we need to come together for the better and by so doing,  make Nigeria a great nation that  we will all be proud of.”

Speaking on the by-election, Gbajabiamila said the process had been peaceful and smooth from the point of accreditation and voting.

The rally featured party faithful distributing the fliers and handbills to educate electorate on how to thump print on the ballot papers.
