Twelve candidates from different political parties will be contesting the February 3rd Surulere Federal Constituency I bye-election.

No fewer than 121,111 voters are expected to participate in the exercise, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State.

The Surulere Federal Constituency I seat became vacant due to the resignation of the former occupant, Femi Gbajabiamila, who after winning, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as his Chief of Staff.

Gbajabiamila was elected in the 2023 general elections for the sixth term as a member of the House of Representatives representing Surulere Constituency 1.

‘Gbajabiamila has redefined governance in Nigeria’

League of Progressive Nigerians (LPN), London, United Kingdom, has hailed Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila for redefining governance in the country.

A statement by LPN President, Maxwell deleye described  Gbajabiamila as one of the finest public office holders in this dispensation, who has brought panache and finesse to redefine governance with stellar results to show.

This is in reaction to sponsored media attacks by some unscrupulous elements with warped vested interests against  the Chief of Staff (CoS).

Adeleye said the attacks are meant to distract him from offering his best efforts to help the Tinubu administration for  sustainable growth and development.

The statement reads in part: “During his tenure in the House of Representatives, he sponsored 25 Bills in the last Assembly with about 10 crucial  ones passed by the House.

“The bills include Electric Power Sector Reform Act (Amendment) Bill 2019, Physically Challenged (Empowerment) Bill 2019,  Presidential (Transition) Bill 2019l, South West Development Commission (Establishment) Bill 2019. Labour Act (Amendment) Bill 2019, Economic Stimulus Bill 2019, Emergency Economic Stimulus Bill 2020, Quarantine Act (Repeal and Enactment) Bill 2020 and Nigeria Health Infrastructure Development Bank (Establishment Etc)  Bill 2020.

“He  also sponsored important pieces of legislation, including the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2023. His federal constituency, Surulere Federal Constituency, will never forget his numerous durable and impactful projects, especially in health and education.

His commitment to building a successor generation who will help repurpose governance in Nigeria for optimal service delivery led to his founding of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative(LMI), which is now domiciled with the National Institute for Democratic and Legislative Studies(NILDS). The initiative has already produced its second cohort of Fellows with some of them already holding vital appointments at the national and subnational levels.”

The group urged the President to continue to have confidence in his CoS who is ‘one of Nigeria’s finest public servants at the moment’.

We as a group would have chosen to ignore the face rabble-rousers behind the unwarranted attacks and their toxic shenanigans but for their tendency to misinform and therefore mislead some Nigerians who might not truly know what the real issues are,” it  added.

  • ‘Gbajabiamila has no case to answer in Humanitarian Affairs saga’

The Civil Society Coalition for Transparency in Governance (CISCOTIG) has rubbished attempts to drag the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Chief Femi Gbajabiamila, into the probe of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation

In a statement co-signed by its convener Comrade Michael Sunday Emaluji and Adebayo Lion Ogorry, its secretary and spokesman, the group said Gbajabiamila has no case to answer.

“We have seen tenuous analyses that concluded Gbajabiamila’s guilt simply because he was listed as Betta Edu’s reference on the CV used for her confirmatory screening before the Senate,” the statement said.

“Some surmised that the Chief of Staff was part of the transactions because he is reportedly of the same political sub-bloc as some people who have been insinuated to be connected with the issue. These conjectures have been made to gain ground even though those behind them are aware that they do not have the facts to back up these claims.

“But the most outlandish of these claims is the one that comically concluded that the Chief of Staff is complicit in the transactions being investigated because he forwarded the memo containing President Tinubu’s approval to the suspended Minister for the release of N3 billion for the verification of the National Social Register compiled by the former administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

“We find it odd that those alluding to wrongdoing on the part of the Chief of Staff for forwarding Mr President’s approval are conveniently befuddling the truth, which is that it is the responsibility of that office to convey all such approvals to the receiving Ministry, Department or Agency.

“It is simply the administrative workflow that has been established over the years. To accuse the Chief of Staff in the manner they are going about at the moment is to say that he should not do his job, which also implies that all approvals from Mr President would be stuck in the State House and governance would ground to a halt.

“From the foregoing, we have flagged two main concerns. The first is the tendency to make a mockery of the anti-corruption efforts by needlessly dragging in persons who are not connected with the fraudulent transactions being investigated – this even has implications for the eventual outcome of the resulting trial since charging the wrong persons could jeopardize such trials.

“The second is the unwitting frustration of governance when people demand impractical workflow like insinuating that the Chief of Staff should not have transmitted Mr President’s approval to the suspended Minister.”

The coalition urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of reducing the investigation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation into a reality show that would only serve entertainment purposes.

“This is a serious matter as it affects the well-being of the vulnerable and poorest of the poor among us, whose welfare must on no condition be diverted for the selfish use of a few individuals,” the statement added.

“We, as Nigerians, must also not lend ourselves to becoming e part of a lynch mob deployed for settling political scores by conducting media trials that declare people guilty even when we have not established that they were part of the problems we are addressing,” it said.

Betta Edu: Don’t link Gbajabiamila with financial scam, CSO warns

A civil society organisation, Concern Citizen for Good Governance, has alleged a plot by mischief makers to pull down the Chief of Staff to the president, Femi Gbajabiamila by falsely linking him with the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu.

The group said while previous attempts by the people to get the president to lose faith in his Chief of Staff failed, they have begun another round of campaign of calumny against Gbajabiamila who they claimed is one of the strong pillars of the current administration.

This is contained in a statement titled “Mischief Makers Blindfolded with Illiteracy behind Campaign of Calumny against Chief of Staff to President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila”, in Abuja on Wednesday.

They stated that those behind the campaign of calumny orchestrated the plan long ago and are now forcefully linking the Chief of Staff to the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu.

The statement said: “To say Gbajabiamila is an authority in Law and a Professor in working procedures of government is not an overstatement. It is crystal clear some people are still looking for the downfall of one of the best brains in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu but they have failed.

“Someone who managed 360 elected representatives of the Federal House of Representatives for a solid 4 years without a blemish will now fall for a peanut?

“It is unfortunate that detractors do not know the quality and value of the person Femi Gbajabiamila. He has crossed the bridge before it collapsed so what they are pursuing is ’emptiness of the second day after the Market day”

“We the Concern Citizens for Good Governance will soon expose all of those behind the evil plan.

“It is now an open secret that they want the government of President Bola Tinubu to fail by trying to pull down the pillars of support behind him.”

The group quoted the religious axiom of people reaping whatever they sow, and urged those behind the attack to desist, “We are going to go after you all and expose you to the World.”

  • Femi Gbajabiamila’s impact

    Femi Gbajabiamila’s impact

Describing Femi Gbajabiamila as a misunderstood man is stating the obvious.

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu is a dogged and resilient fighter, who is hell-bent on achieving his tall dreams.

The former Speaker of the Ninth National Assembly is synonymous with grace. And the reason is not far-fetched. Gbajabiamila is one of the few, who have witnessed the goodness of the creator in their lives.

Achieving his long-time dream as the speaker of the lower National Assembly indicates that anything can be achieved with hard work, loyalty and consistency. While in the lower chamber, he steered the ship differently giving the needed support to enhance national development and unprecedented infrastructural renewal in the country.

In the same vein, Gbajabiamila ensured that he spent constituency funds on projects that impacted on the lives of his constituents, an act that got him the moniker, The Good Samaritan.

Yesterday, the  lawyer converged with top Lagos political bigwigs for the  inauguration of his numerous projects that litter the state.

    • Chief of Staff to President inaugurates projects in Lagos

The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, yesterday urged Nigerians to be patient with the Bola Tinubu administration.

He said a government’s ability to perform takes experience, pedigree and time to manifest.

The Chief of Staff also admonished those seeking public offices to “remember that the ultimate and highest legacy we can leave as public servants is in the evident improvements to the lives of the people we serve”.

He added: “I must also urge citizens to remember that the ability to get things done in government requires experience and pedigree, takes time and demands that we manage expectations accordingly.”

Gbajabiamila spoke in Lagos while inaugurating some projects he facilitated in his Surulere Federal Constituency when he was Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The Chief of Staff was accompanied by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to inaugurate the projects, which included a conference centre at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo; an ultramodern, multi-floor 80-bed general gospital; the dualised Babs Animashaun Road and Census Bridge; and the Sam Shonibare Community Development Centre, all in Surulere.

Gbajabiamila, who traced his political trajectory in the last 20 years at the House of Representatives, said it was an honour to serve fellow Nigerians.

The Chief of Staff thanked Sanwo-Olu “for his support and collaboration through the years because without partnership with the state government, it would have been more difficult to achieve our visions for the projects”.

He added: “I am proud that we have constructed over 250 roads in selected federal constituencies in the state, especially Surulere I and II constituencies, and completed 15 mini-stadia.

“We facilitated heavy investment in education and healthcare, including constructing and equipping over 20 ICT centres in public schools where children are taught computer programming and coding. We have provided solar energy systems to light up neighbourhoods and support commercial trades in our constituencies.”

The general hospital was upgraded from a primary healthcare centre and now boasts advanced and specialist care facilities, a 500kva generator, a 100kva solar-powered electricity supply on the roof, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a borehole, a water filtration system and a dialysis centre on the second floor.

It also boasts a radiology, large laboratory, paediatric, physiotherapy, surgical, and X-ray facilities.

The Chief of Stuff said the projects were inspired by a sense of duty and part of his efforts to meet the people’s expectations.

Sanwo-Olu, who thanked Gbajabiamila for partnering the state government, said such fruitful collaborations were part of the administration’s efforts to further its T.H.E.M.E.S agenda.

The governor described the facility as world-class, adding that it would be managed by the state’s Ministry of Health.

According to him, to strengthen the state’s medical infrastructure and counter the mass exodus of doctors and other medical personnel, the government will, this year, build a medical university targeted at graduating 1,500 doctors yearly.

Sanwo-Olu said the institution would be built in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The governor explained that the facility is needed to abide by the advice from the Federal authorities that the state needs to scale up the number of medical personnel it produces in the light of the shortage of medical health practitioners due to the japa syndrome.

The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed satisfaction with the role the House of Representatives played in the construction of the new Presidential Wing of the State House Hospital in Abuja.

The N21 billion facility was but by former Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, when Gbajabiamila was Speaker of the House of Representatives.

After a guided tour of the hospital, which is located within the perimeters of the State House, the Chief of Staff said he had seen the facility with all the modern equipment in it and attested that it is of global standard.

Gbajabiamila, who addressed reporters after the tour, highlighted the advanced medical equipment, including a Cath Lab and a unique C-ARM.

He expressed satisfaction that the funds allocated during his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives had been well utilised.

“First of all, like you rightly said, there’s been a lot of talk about this clinic, not just today, even when I was in the National Assembly as Speaker. So, I thought, having been here a few months, let’s have a look and see exactly what is going on.

“I have seen, I am very impressed, and I’m sure you are as well because you went round with me. This is a clinic like anywhere else in the world. You will find that the standard is very high. The equipment is of world class. From my understanding, there’s some equipment that you wouldn’t even find in too many places all over the world.

“So, as far as clinics go, in terms of equipment, in terms of what they can do, in terms of, I mean, I’ve just been lectured about kidney transplant now from one of the best… There’s a Cath Lab; that’s world class, and so many other things.

“There’s an equipment they called C-ARM. This gladdens my heart that at least when we were appropriating money in the House of Representatives, as Speaker, I can see where the money has gone to.

“So, it’s for them to dot the Is and cross the Ts and put finishing touches. I think we’ll be proud to say that we have a clinic of international standard like this one,” he said.

Chairman of Clinical Services at the State House, Dr. Jane Ifechukwu, who led the guided tour, explained that the facility’s current status was even skeletal, as it was awaiting approval to operationalise.

She added: “What we have here is skeletal, just the way we were having the Villa Clinic. But once we dot the Is – we can’t take decisions on our own; they give us the go-ahead – and we are good to go.”

When asked about the timeline for the facility’s full utilisation, Dr. Ifechukwu hinted that approval had to be given from higher authorities.

“We actually discourage medical tourism, and I can’t speak now. I am waiting for our principals, our bosses, to do that. Then, the Permanent Secretary will give us a directive, and then we can do it,” she said.

No N21bn provision for Chief of Staff residence in 2024 Budget – Gbajabiamila

Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has debunked claims on some media platforms that the 2024 Budget has allocated N21 billion for his accommodation.

The former speaker was reacting on his verified X handle, @femigbaja, to the report, which provided an alleged breakdown of budget details taking care of items for the office of the Chief of Staff, in the budget estimates presented to the National Assembly by President Tinubu last Wednesday.

The report, which found its way into several online news outlets, claimed proposed N104 million for the purchase of computers and printers for ‘local travel and transport for international training,’ his office is to spend N579 million, while ‘miscellaneous’ is expected to gulp N103 million.

The report also claimed a further breakdown of the proposed budgetary allocations showed that the reconstruction and repair of the CoS’s official residence is to get N10 billion.

Computer software purchase for his office is purportedly expected to gulp about N10.1 billion and N290 million is allocated for purchase of vehicles.

However, in the response posted on his X handle, Gbajabiamila said the report by the news platforms is false as there is no provision in the 2024 Budget proposal for the renovation of his official residence, noting that he lives in his own house.

He explained that the sums mischievously quoted by online news outlets and those he called fake news merchants were for the renovation of the Presidential Quarters in Dodan Barracks and the Vice President’s Lodge in Lagos, to overhaul the information management and communications facilities in the Presidency to meet modern standards and to provide vehicles for the staff of the Presidency.

He said: “I have seen social media commentary regarding the 2024 Appropriation Bill, particularly the provisions under the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President. Owing to the erroneous nature of these reports, it has become necessary to clarify that there is no provision in the 2024 Appropriation Bill for the renovation of any residence for the Chief of Staff to the President. I live in my private residence.

“The sums mischievously quoted by online bloggers and fake news merchants are for renovating the Presidential Quarters in Dodan Barracks and the Vice President’s Lodge in Lagos, to overhaul the information management and communications facilities in the Presidency to meet modern standards and to provide vehicles for the staff of the presidency.

“The sums proposed for these projects are clearly stated in the budget proposal and bear no resemblance to the deceptive online commentary.

“This administration welcomes and encourages scrutiny of government expenditure; this is why the Budget proposal is publicly available. However, healthy public debate about government actions requires us to be responsible with our utterances and engage based on facts rather than insinuations and falsehoods.”

Students’ loan initiative ‘ll make Nigerian studentscompete with world best – Gbajabiamila

The Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has said that efforts are underway to ensure the Students’ Loan Scheme take-off in January 2024.

This, he said, would ensure that Nigerian students access the loans “to fund their educational aspirations.”

Gbajabiamila spoke during the Convocation Lecture of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).

While delivering the lecture titled, “Empowering Nigerian Youths in the Present Day Economy” at the 35th convocation ceremony, the former House of Representatives Speaker stated that to make the process seamless, “applicants will apply online, be verified online, and be credited based on the verifiable documents and credentials they have submitted.”

He said: “The application system for the student loan programme is being designed so that there is no interface between the loan administrators and the beneficiaries. Applicants will apply online, be verified online, and be credited based on the verifiable documents and credentials they have submitted. Nobody will need to know anybody to qualify for these loans, so that access to this financing will be genuinely egalitarian.

“The student loan system answers part of the question of how to fund a quality public tertiary education but doesn’t answer all of it. Any serious conversation about the future of tertiary education in Nigeria must include thoroughly considering the ways and means of addressing the funding needs of public tertiary institutions beyond government subvention. In this regard, we cannot for much longer avoid the simple truth that tertiary education costs money, and the best institutions worldwide succeed, amongst other things, because they can generate significant sums through fees, investments, and other means.

“The simple truth is that for our institutions to compete favourably, we need more resources than are currently available to address the dangerous decline in the quality of scholarship and academic output and the graduates we produce from many of our institutions.”

He stated that in a perfect world, access to education would be a fundamental benefit afforded to every individual from basic through tertiary.

“And our learning centers will be majestic citadels of research and innovation, open to all who seek knowledge, regardless of means. But this is not a perfect world. In this real world, education is a commodity, and a quality education even more so. “Therefore, the central public policy challenge is the conflict between the competing objectives of access and quality. How do we fund a quality tertiary education without imposing costs that make access to quality education impossible for most people?

“We require a programme of aggressive and sustained investment in education. Not only in the physical infrastructure of classrooms and lecture halls but in technology hardware and software to facilitate information exchange and innovation.

“In this new world we have found ourselves in, nothing has changed as drastically as the nature of work and how we measure productivity. Today, many skills that guarantee employment and a healthy income for previous generations have been made redundant by technological advances.

The Rector of the College, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, said the institution focused on youth empowerment through its various programmes.

“Furthermore, to show how committed we are to the empowering of our youths, the management established the Industry Advisory Committee to enhance her dynamic role of producing technical manpower for the Economic and Social development of Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, when it comes to manpower development, technological advancement, and youth empowerment, the college has been at the forefront.

“This generation will not only be competing with one another for opportunities, but they will also be competing in a global marketplace, against students from all over the world, and against technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, blockchain and financial technology tools that are increasingly replacing the human function in the workplace. We must prepare them with these realities in mind.

“To do this effectively, we need to develop a new understanding of the changing nature of work and the future of employment. The limits of our knowledge hinder us from effectively addressing the challenges of this new age and adapting to the changing realities we cannot escape. Collaboration between our higher institutions and the organised private sector is vital to carry out the essential work of engagement, research and review required to bridge the gaps in our knowledge. This is an objective that we cannot, for the sake of our future, leave to the government alone to pursue,” he said.
