    • PDP chieftain slams presidential aides

A presidential hopeful of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has accused some aides to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to divide the country along regional and ethnic lines.

He warned that such a rhetoric amounts to what he called a betrayal of the nation.

Hashim described the alleged push for a North–South dichotomy by some chieftains of the ruling party as a desperate political diversion to shield the current administration from scrutiny.

Reacting to a statement credited to the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Hashim said the strategy “undermines Nigeria’s national security interest”.

He added: “Dividing Nigeria along regional lines to escape accountability for governance failure is shameful and dangerous. It is a direct betrayal of the oath to defend the unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Focusing on the build-up to next year’s general election, the PDP chieftain dismissed arguments about rotational presidency, insisting that Nigerians are no longer interested in symbolic power-sharing formulas.

“Nigerians are not asking for a Northern or Southern president. They are asking for a competent president, one who can revive the economy, secure lives, and property, and unite the country around a shared future of prosperity,” he said.

Hashim said the North and the South have had substantial opportunities to govern Nigeria since 1999, noting that the South has produced presidents for approximately 17 years, while the North has governed for about 10 years within the same democratic period.

“Leadership failure cannot be blamed on geography. Both regions have governed. What matters now is performance, not origin,” he said.

Hashim advised fellow Nigerians to reject alleged divisive politics, stressing that the APC would not be able to hide behind regional sentiment in the next election cycle.

“Come 2027, Nigerians will vote for leadership, not tribal loyalty. The era of emotional blackmail is over,” he added.

PDP’s Gbenga Hashim slams ethnic rhetoric, warns against north–south divide

Presidential hopeful of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has condemned what he described as attempts by aides of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stoke regional and ethnic divisions, warning that such actions undermine Nigeria’s unity.

Hashim said the renewed push for a North–South narrative by elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is a political distraction aimed at deflecting attention from economic challenges and governance concerns under the Tinubu administration.

Reacting to a statement attributed to the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Hashim described the approach as “reckless” and harmful to Nigeria’s national security interests.

“Dividing Nigeria along regional lines in order to evade accountability for governance failures is dangerous and unacceptable. It amounts to a betrayal of the oath to uphold the unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the PDP chieftain dismissed arguments based on rotational presidency, insisting that Nigerians are more concerned about competence, accountability, and effective governance than symbolic power-sharing arrangements.

“Nigerians are not asking for a Northern or Southern president. They are asking for a competent president, one who can revive the economy, secure lives and property, and unite the country around a shared future of Prosperity,” he stated.

Hashim reminded the APC that both regions have had substantial opportunities to govern Nigeria since 1999, noting that the South has produced presidents for approximately 17 years, while the North has governed for about 10 years within the same democratic period.

“Leadership failure cannot be blamed on geography. Both regions have governed. What matters now is performance, not origin,” he said.

He warned that resurrecting ethnic narratives at a time of deep economic distress, rising insecurity, and social fragmentation only exposes the ruling party’s lack of credible solutions.

“Using ethnicity and region to mask incompetence is not only lazy politics, it is also a direct insult to Nigerians who are struggling to survive,” Hashim added.

Calling on citizens across the country to reject divisive politics, Hashim stressed that the APC would not be able to hide behind regional sentiment in the next election cycle.

“Come 2027, Nigerians will vote for leadership, not tribal loyalty. The era of emotional blackmail is over,” he concluded.

Kaduna abduction: Hashim accuses govt of negligence

A former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has accused the Federal Government and some people within the security apparatus of complicity in the worsening insecurity in the country.

Hashim was reacting to the reported kidnapping of over 170 persons in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said the Kajuru incident exposed deep-seated failures in the nation’s security management.

According to him, security authorities initially denied the mass abduction before later acknowledging it.

Hashim noted that the denial reflected a disturbing and increasingly common pattern of suppressing information rather than responding decisively to crimes of terrorism and mass kidnapping.

“No matter the level of international action against terrorism, Nigeria will not get results, as long as local authorities are compromised and complicit,” he said.

The former presidential candidate stated that truth has become a liability within the nation’s security framework.

He described the initial handling of the Kajuru case as a “calculated attempt to erase a crime,” arguing that such actions undermine effective security responses and public trust.

Hashim also raised concerns over the alleged intimidation of affected communities, claiming that victims are often pressured into silence instead of being protected and supported by the authorities.

He linked the trend to increased international attention on Nigeria’s security situation following recent United States Christmas Day airstrikes on terrorist locations in northern Nigeria.

According to him, the period after the airstrikes witnessed further attacks that were allegedly concealed.

Hashim cited reports from Kebbi State, where terrorists reportedly killed at least nine people about a week after the U.S. operation.

He faulted the Federal Government’s response to the U.S. strikes, accusing the Nigerian government of failing to deploy ground forces to intercept or apprehend fleeing insurgents, despite claims of prior knowledge of the operation.

The PDP chieftain also warned that Nigeria’s insecurity is no longer solely about capacity or funding but about intent and accountability.

He stressed that unless official denial, information suppression, and alleged complicity are confronted, the crisis would persist, regardless of foreign support.

Hashim: PDP will win next year despite legal intrigues

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has said the party will win next year’s general election despite the legal tussle among its members.

He said the PDP would dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the general election.

The businessman-turned politician insisted that no legal or administrative manoeuvers can derail Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

Hashim, a long-standing figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, alleged that the ruling APC is engaging in legal and institutional actions aimed at weakening opposition participation ahead of the next election cycle. He described the situation as part of a broader pattern that raises serious concerns about the future of democratic competition in the country.

According to him, such developments mirror past attempts to undermine political pluralism in Nigeria.

Hashim said such efforts were ultimately defeated by the collective will of the people.

“We have travelled this road before under Abacha’s dictatorship and it ended in victory for the forces of genuine democracy, while the plotters of one-man rule were disgraced,” Hashim stated.

The PDP chieftain reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multiparty democracy, saying the nation’s founding fathers deliberately chose political pluralism at independence and embedded it in the country’s constitutional framework.

“Our founding fathers opted for multiparty democracy and, by the grace of God, that legacy will be preserved. No group, no matter how clever or determined, will succeed in destroying Nigeria’s democratic system, by the Grace of God,” he said.

Hashim warned against any drift towards authoritarianism, drawing parallels with the political history of Zaire under the late Mobutu Sese Seko, where prolonged one-man rule eroded democratic institutions.

“One-man rule or one-party rule will not happen here. This is Nigeria. We will not allow anyone to reduce our democracy to a tragic parody, as was the case with Zaire under Mobutu Sese Seko,” he added.

The PDP chief also expressed concern over what he called selective administrative decisions in the political party registration process.

Hashim alleged that while some qualified political associations have reportedly stalled in the process, others perceived to be aligned with the ruling party have received interim recognition.

Describing these trends as warning signs of democratic backsliding, he urged fellow Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant in defending democratic norms.

Hashim urged “lovers of democracy across the world” to consider lawful and targeted accountability measures against individuals allegedly working to undermine Nigeria’s multiparty system.

He noted that such measures, when supported by credible evidence and due process, could include travel restrictions and the freezing of assets.

The PDP chieftain emphasised that his concerns extended to the conducts of political actors and institutions.

He said democracy could only be safeguarded through transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to constitutional principles.

Release Sowore’s passport now— Gbenga Hashim urges tinubu

…says Nigeria is worth fighting for

Former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately order the release of the international passport of activist and former presidential candidate, Comrade Omoyele Sowore, describing its continued seizure as an abuse of power and a threat to democratic freedoms.

Hashim made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving Sowore, who paid him a courtesy visit during a meeting with PDP chairmen in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The meeting was also attended by the Chief of Staff, Mr. Kamaldeen Adebayo Sanni, and the National Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, Abdulrazaq Hamzat.

Speaking during the interaction, Hashim recalled their shared pro-democracy struggles dating back to 1989, when Sowore was one of his protégés.

He said the meeting was not a nostalgic exercise, but a reminder of the sacrifices that secured Nigeria’s democratic space.

According to Hashim, Sowore’s courage, consistency, and refusal to bow to intimidation have made him a symbol of principled resistance and a rallying point for young Nigerians demanding a new political order.

“Nigeria is worth fighting for, and meaningful change is possible, no matter how difficult,” Hashim said.

He condemned what he described as the sustained persecution of Sowore for speaking truth to power, noting that the continued seizure of his passport has effectively punished him without conviction and denied him the basic right to family life.

Hashim warned that democracies collapse when dissent is criminalized, stressing that the protection of opposing voices is a non-negotiable pillar of democratic governance.

He therefore called on President Tinubu to act decisively by ordering the immediate release of Sowore’s passport in the interest of justice, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for Sowore to reconnect with longtime comrades, as participants reflected on defining moments that shaped their lifelong commitment to democracy, civic courage, and accountable leadership.

Four support groups backing the presidential aspiration of Dr. Gbenga Hashim have promised to intensify grassroots mobilisation to ensure the actualisation of his ambition.

They expressed commitment to ensure that Hashim becomes the President in 2027.

The support groups said his leadership would place Nigeria on the path of development, peace and progress.

The groups are: the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, led by Hajiya A’isha Mustapha; Gbenga Hashim Group (Party Structure), led by Miko Isyaku; Gbenga Hashim Support Group, led by Khalifa Muhammad; and the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard.

Also, the Northwest Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard, Aminu Bala, stressed the need for inclusiveness, urging support groups to relate with and welcome individuals across party lines in order to broaden the support base for Hashim.

He underscored the strategic political importance of Kano, describing it as a major political hub whose support could significantly influence other states in the region to rally behind Hashim’s presidential aspiration.

Hashim’s Chief of Staff, Kamaldeen Sani Adebayo, said the aspirant’s track record as a successful global businessman with enterprises in Nigeria and across several countries qualifies him for the nation’s highest office.

He conveyed a goodwill message of the aspirant to the various support groups and assured them that he would remain committed to them.

Adebayo said they would not be abandoned if he eventually emerges as the democratically elected President of Nigeria.
