I will never give up on Nigeria, says Hashim

A former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Nigeria.

He promised not to surrender in the struggle to see the country get better, despite the nation’s deepening political, economic, and security challenges.

Hashim spoke in Abuja at a Northcentral zonal meeting of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, which brought together state coordinators from across the region.

Addressing the gathering, Hashim said Nigeria’s current realities demand steadfast leadership, an organised civic engagement and citizens who are willing to remain involved rather than retreat into apathy or despair. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart warned that abandoning the country would amount to handing its future over to mediocrity, impunity and misrule.

According to him, national renewal requires discipline, clarity of purpose and sustained grassroots organization.

Hashim stressed that meaningful change is never accidental but the product of deliberate and collective effort.

He urged the coordinators to deepen community-level engagement while remaining anchored to the core values of accountability, justice and national unity.

The meeting reviewed the state of the movement across the Northcentral zone, assessed ongoing mobilisation efforts and agreed on strategies to strengthen coordination and expand the movement’s reach within the region.

The coordinators at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to the vision of a Nigeria governed by competence, integrity and inclusiveness, pledging to intensify grassroots organisation and political education across their respective states.

Hashim recalled his long history of political advocacy, which began at the age of 14 when he became a sympathiser of progressive parties of the era.

“We were not of voting age then, but we pasted posters and sang with excitement,” he said. “As a young boy, I engaged an NPN representative to the National Assembly, who was a family friend, in discussions about economic management based on my rudimentary knowledge of economics and government.”

Hashim stated that his early activism set him on the path of advocacy for democracy and good governance. This journey later led to his detention as a political detainee at the age of 20.

“Almost 40 years later, we are still standing,” Hashim said. “We will not give up until we see the Nigeria of our dreams, by the grace of God.”

Hashim also urged members to remind Nigerians, particularly the youth, of the country’s past economic strengths and future possibilities.

“Tell the people that in 1966, Nigeria’s economy was twice the size of Malaysia’s and bigger than those of Thailand and Indonesia,” he said. “Remind them how Nigeria assembled cars and tractors and produced vaccines at the Yaba Vaccine Centre. Let young people know that jobs through industrialisation are possible, as we had before, and that they are not condemned to a life dependent on palliatives. Tell them about our $4 trillion plan for economic transformation,” Hashim added.

The attendees renewed their determination among members to strengthen organisation, sustain advocacy and remain firm in the belief that Nigeria could still be rescued through principled leadership and collective action.

PDP leadership crisis can be resolved in one week — Gbenga Hashim tells Tanimu Turaki

…urges NEC to rise above factional interests to save Nigeria’s democracy

A former presidential candidate and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has said the lingering leadership crisis rocking the party can be resolved within one week if its leadership embraces political solutions rather than prolonged legal battles.

Hashim made this assertion during a meeting with the PDP national chairman, Ambassador Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as part of ongoing consultations aimed at achieving an out-of-court resolution to the party’s internal dispute.

The former presidential hopeful, who was also among the conveners of the PDP in 1998 and its first elected deputy national publicity secretary, said resolving the crisis politically would better serve the survival of the party and the health of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

According to him, the party already possesses the constitutional authority required to resolve the impasse without resorting to litigation.

“There are more than enough legitimate members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to convene a meeting and resolve this crisis within one week,” Hashim stated.

He cited Sections 3(1) and 3(4) of the PDP Constitution, which empower two-thirds of NEC members to convene a meeting, stressing that the majority of NEC members were elected before the disputed Ibadan convention and therefore retain unquestionable legitimacy.

Hashim further explained that although the tenure of some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) expired on December 8, the pre-Ibadan NEC members remain constitutionally empowered to intervene and take corrective action in the interest of the party.

“What is required now is courage and responsibility,” he said.

“NEC members must rise above factional interests and stand for posterity, for the party, and for the nation.”

He warned that continued internal paralysis could weaken the PDP’s capacity as a credible opposition party and ultimately undermine Nigeria’s democratic balance.

“We can fix this problem, and we should,” he added.

Responding, the PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Tanimu Turaki (SAN), thanked Dr. Hashim for the visit and his commitment to party unity. He assured that the leadership under his watch remains open to reconciliation, stressing, however, that such efforts must not compromise the unity, stability, and continued existence of the party.

The meeting, which was held at Turaki’s Asokoro residence in Abuja, was also attended by the Deputy National Chairman and the National Youth Leader of the party.

Hashim: External military actions need internal reforms to yield result

A presidential hopeful, Gbenga Hashim, has said there must be internal reforms of the nation’s security architecture for any external help to make the needed impact.

He said the recent United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) elements operating within Nigeria indicted the country’s security architecture.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart said the government should face up to what he called governance failure.

In a statement, Hashim said the U.S. “intervention” reflected growing international concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, particularly in the Northwest, where terrorist groups mostly hold sway.

The former presidential candidate noted that concerned global actors cannot ignore the emergence of an IS foothold in Nigeria.

He stressed that the country is “too large, too strategic, and too important to be allowed to fail”.

Hashim said since 2021, and more intensely over the past year, his team had repeatedly warned that security modelling in the Northwest pointed towards a dangerous trajectory, including the potential emergence of an IS-aligned enclave if urgent action was not taken.

The presidential hopeful attributed the worsening insecurity to deepening poverty, alleged governance failure, and weakened institutions.

These, he said, have emboldened extremist groups while moderate political and secular voices across the region were allegedly ignored.

“More worrying is the elevation of individuals who enable or rationalise extremism into positions of political influence, creating conditions under which terror groups can aspire to territorial control,” he stated.

Acknowledging that international airstrikes may temporarily degrade terrorist capabilities, Hashim stressed that lasting solutions can only come from within.

He added that as external interventions are not expected to be one-off actions, the mechanisms guiding them must be carefully negotiated within the framework of security cooperation between sovereign nations.

The presidential hopeful stressed that there should be clear accountability structures and transparent reporting measures to prevent abuse and ensure long-term stability.

“The situation in the Northwest is dire. Without urgent internal reforms, improved governance, and decisive political leadership, external military interventions will not produce sustainable results,” he warned.

Hashim urged the Federal Government to undertake the critical internal reforms needed to stabilise the country, arguing that Nigeria continues to grapple with fundamental governance and security deficits that threaten its democratic future.

According to him, the government’s alleged reluctance to act decisively may stem from political compromises made during the 2015 struggle for power.

Hashim said such compromises now constrain the government’s alleged ability to confront extremist elements head-on.

Hashim warned that Nigeria can no longer afford denial or half-measures in the face of “an existential threat,” calling for an urgent and courageous leadership to prevent further deterioration of national security.

Gbenga Hashim pays condolence visit to late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s family

Former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has paid a condolence visit to the family of late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

Hashim described the revered Islamic scholar as a rare religious leader defined not just by learning, but by deep moral conscience and national commitment.

The Ex Presidential Candidate, who shares the same birthday, 28th June, with the late cleric, spoke in Hausa, which he later translated. He said, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi stood out in an era where religiosity is often divorced from godliness, noting that while many claim religious authority, few truly fear God.

“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was not just a religious man; he was highly learned, informed, and above all, a man who genuinely feared God. Many religious people do not fear God, but Sheikh Dahiru was different; he was a true man of God,” Hashim said.

Beyond his scholarly influence, Hashim emphasised the late cleric’s unwavering dedication to Nigeria’s unity and peace, describing him as a national figure whose impact transcended religion, ethnicity, and region.

“Apart from being an Islamic scholar, he was deeply committed to the unity of Nigeria and worked tirelessly for the peace of the nation. That is why I regard him as my father,” he added.

Hashim reaffirmed his own lifelong commitment to the ideals Sheikh Dahiru embodied, stressing that national unity and peace remain non-negotiable values in a deeply diverse country like Nigeria.

“I am also committed to the unity of Nigeria and to working for peace, irrespective of tribe, region, or religion.”

While acknowledging the pain of the loss, Hashim noted that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s legacy remains alive in the principles he lived for.

“Yes, he is no longer with us, but what he stood for, peace and unity, remains for every Nigerian to learn from.”

Dr Hashim came with a large delegation, which included Sheikh Haliru Abdulahi Maraya (Kaduna), Dr Ibrshim Umar (Kaduna), Mr Kamaldeen Adebayo Sanni (FCT), Hajia Rabi Musa (Nassarawa), Mr Ezekiel Dinfa (Plateau), and Coordinators of the Hashim Organization in the three Senatorial Districts and 20 LGA of Bauchi State.

Hashim: Northern elites must take responsibility for security failures

Presidential aspirant and businessman, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has challenged Northern political and social elites to accept responsibility for the region’s deepening insecurity, warning that public patience, home and abroad is fast running out.

He, however, hailed the appointment of General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence, describing it as a decisive moment that must produce tangible results.

In a statement on Sunday, Hashim said he followed Musa’s Senate screening “with keen interest” and was impressed by the nominee’s sincerity, clarity and commitment to national duty.

He, therefore, urged the federal government to provide the new Defence Minister with the full backing required to deliver.

According to Hashim, “I watched General Musa’s Senate clearance session. He sounded like someone genuinely committed to Nigeria. I hope he receives the full executive support needed to succeed in this critical assignment.”

The Presidential Hopeful cautioned that Nigerians were no longer swayed by symbolism or political rhetoric, insisting that what citizens now demand is swift, measurable action to halt killings, kidnappings and the expanding footprints of extremist groups across the North.

“This is not the season for symbolism. This is the season for action. Nigerians want to see immediate steps. This appointment must not become another publicity stunt. We want to see policies, programmes and results,” he warned.

He called on both the Executive and the National Assembly to expedite legislation allowing state and local government policing structures, arguing that no sustainable security reform is possible without a strong sub-national security framework.

Hashim also urged Northern leaders to confront the region’s internal governance failures, which he said have fuelled extremist recruitment among vulnerable communities.

According to him, the mass enlistment into terror cells is a direct outcome of entrenched poverty worsened by years of ineffective governance at state and local levels.

“While the Sahel crisis has contributed, poor local governance has compounded the problem,” he added.

He contrasted the current leadership landscape with the integrity and discipline that defined the First Republic under Sir Ahmadu Bello, Aminu Kano, Joseph Tarka and Sir Kashim Ibrahim, lamenting that many present-day Northern leaders “live like oil sheikhs in the midst of mass poverty.”

He concluded with a pointed call for a new leadership culture in the North. “It is time for the North to replace leaders who live like oil sheikhs amidst poverty and continue to hold onto power through ethnic and religious manipulation,” he said.

Late Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a pillar of national unity — Gbenga Hashim

The 2027 presidential aspirant and global businessman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has paid glowing tribute to the late Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, describing him as an extraordinary figure whose teachings and influence helped stabilise peace and strengthen unity across Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Olawepo-Hashim portrayed the revered Islamic scholar as a man of deep devotion, profound knowledge and unwavering commitment to national harmony — qualities he said defined the cleric’s decades-long service to God and humanity.

He noted that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s spiritual impact extended far beyond Northern Nigeria, touching the lives of millions of Muslims across the country and beyond its borders.

According to him, the late scholar’s moral discipline, scholarship and leadership provided guidance during some of Nigeria’s most challenging periods.

Olawepo-Hashim added that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s teachings were rooted in enduring principles of peace, tolerance and brotherhood — values he said Nigeria urgently needs as it strives to overcome divisions and heal long-standing wounds.

“Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a rallying force for unity,” he said. “Through his teachings and the millions of peace-loving followers he inspired, he strengthened the foundations of a united Nigeria. His life was a testimony of humility, scholarship and service.”

He added that Nigeria had lost more than a religious leader; it had lost a moral compass whose voice brought calm and direction in turbulent moments. The vacuum created by his passage, he stressed, would be deeply felt by the Muslim Ummah and by all Nigerians who cherish peace.

Hashim extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late scholar, urging them to take pride in his extraordinary legacy of spiritual leadership and service. He commended them for their unwavering support throughout the Sheikh’s lifelong mission of spreading knowledge and moral guidance.

He called on political and religious leaders across the country to draw inspiration from Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s devotion to moderation, tolerance and bridge-building, values he said were essential to strengthening social cohesion and securing a more inclusive future.

Gbenga Hashim hails emergence of Fakayode as national president of Omo Ibile Igbomina

Former presidential candidate and prominent national figure, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has congratulated Sir Chief Bisi Fakayode on his emergence as National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Home and Abroad, describing his election as “a victory for competence, integrity, and experience.”

In a statement issued on Monday, Olawepo-Hashim said Chief Fakayode’s emergence reflects the strong confidence Igbomina sons and daughters across the world have in his leadership, noting that it is a testament to his long-standing commitment to unity, cultural heritage, and community progress.

“Your emergence is a clear acknowledgment of your unmatched dedication, integrity, and decades of service to the growth and cohesion of Igbomina land,” he said. “It is no surprise that our people have entrusted you with this important responsibility.”

Olawepo-Hashim noted that Fakayode’s leadership comes at a time when communities across Nigeria are grappling with major socio-economic and security challenges, stressing that such a period requires steady, strategic, and experienced leadership.

“At a time when our nation and communities face significant socio-economic and security concerns, your election represents hope,” he said. “Leadership is most needed when times are difficult, and your wealth of experience, strategic insight, and capacity for consensus-building will be invaluable to the Igbomina people and indeed Kwara State.”
