Gbenga Hashim condemns killings in Kebbi, Kwara, calls for radical overhaul of security architecture

Former presidential candidate, Gbenga Hashim, has raised fresh alarm over what he described as the loss of operational control of security across Northern Nigeria, following renewed terrorist attacks in Kwara and Kebbi states.

In a statement, Hashim said the latest assaults—including the killing of two security operatives in Rogun Village, Kpada District, Patigi LGA, Kwara State, show that terrorists now operate across the North “without fear of the state.”

According to reports, gunmen stormed a police outpost in Rogun on Sunday night, engaging officers in a prolonged gunfight before overrunning the facility.

The attack came just days after 25 schoolgirls were abducted and a vice principal murdered in Kebbi State, alongside the killing of a senior Customs officer in Bagudo LGA.

“These coordinated attacks are evidence of a nation sliding toward total collapse,” Hashim declared. “From Niger to Zamfara, Kaduna to Plateau, Bauchi to Kebbi, and now Kwara, terrorists determine the rhythm of life in too many communities. The Federal Government has lost control.”

He described the Patigi attack as particularly disturbing, noting that the Middle Belt corridor had historically been relatively stable.

“This incident signals a dangerous expansion of terrorist activity and underscores a total failure of intelligence and policing,” he warned.

“What we are witnessing is a quiet surrender of northern Nigeria to non-state actors. Rural communities are under siege. Schools are unsafe. Police posts are now battlefields. This is not governance; this is abandonment,” Hashim added.

He further referenced recent reports of a serving military general ambushed after terrorists allegedly intercepted his communication, insisting the development proves insurgents now possess “advanced capability and extraordinary daring.”

“If terrorists can attack a police outpost in Kwara and kill officers without consequences, what hope is left for villagers? If 25 girls can be abducted in Kebbi without immediate rescue, what remains of the meaning of government?” he asked.

Hashim stressed that effective state authority is now largely confined to state capitals, while “vast rural territories have fallen under the shadow of armed groups.”

“Outside the state capitals, sovereignty is collapsing. Villages are governed by fear, by bandits, by terrorists. The silence from those in power is complicity. Many villagers now pay taxes to terrorists,” he lamented.

He condoled with the families affected by the Kwara and Kebbi attacks and called for an urgent national response, including a radical overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.

“Unless drastic steps are taken now, Nigeria risks tumbling into a new and uncontrollable phase of disintegration,” Hashim warned.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga-Hashim, has donated reusable sanitary pads worth over ₦5 million to young girls across the North Central.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony in Abuja, the presidential hopeful in 2027, Gbenga-Hashim, said the initiative was part of his ongoing efforts to support adolescent girls, especially those affected by the economic hardship in the country.

He disclosed that over 2,000 girls will benefit from the first phase of the distribution, while more beneficiaries will be included in subsequent phases of production and distribution.

Also speaking at the event, one of the coordinators and former Commissioner Girl Guide in Plateau State, Mrs Judith Fidelis, explained that the gesture was inspired by the growing inability of many young girls to afford disposable sanitary pads due to rising costs.

“His Excellency was moved to act because of the current economic realities. Many young girls cannot afford disposable pads, so this initiative was born out of concern for their dignity and well-being,” she said.

She noted that the reusable pads are eco-friendly and made from locally sourced materials.

“During our research, we discovered that disposable pads often litter the streets and take hundreds of years to decompose. This reusable pad is safe, hygienic, and environmentally friendly. It can be washed, dried, and reused comfortably,” she added.

Explaining the production process, she revealed that the product, branded ‘Nature Drip’, is duly registered and certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

“When production started, SON inspected our facility and was satisfied. The pads were also subjected to laboratory testing and autoclaving for sterilization before packaging,” she said.

She emphasized that the pads are durable and cost-effective.

“With two or three of these pads, a girl can manage comfortably for a year if properly maintained. It is economical, sustainable, and promotes menstrual hygiene,” she noted.

She praised Hashim for his commitment to empowering women and girls, describing him as “a leader who genuinely cares about the girl child, not just a politician seeking votes.”

The initiative, according to the organizers, aims to promote menstrual hygiene, reduce school absenteeism among girls, and contribute to environmental sustainability. The scheme was sponsored through the Gbenga Hashim Foundation.

2027: Olawepo-Hashim has national appeal, says support group

The Gbenga Hashim Vanguard North West has urged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reject blackmail and pressures to hand over the party’s presidential ticket to any regional political warlord under the pretext of zoning or power rotation.

The group’s coordinator, Aminu Wudilawa, noted that zoning has done enough damage to Nigeria’s national psychology.

The coordinator said democracy is about popular choice, not turn-by-turn.

In a statement addressed to the party’s leadership, the coordinator emphasised that only a candidate with genuine national appeal and orientation, and who is also capable of winning significant votes in both the North and South, can deliver victory to the PDP in 2027.

“Any candidate that cannot win an open, competitive primary by building national consensus has no chance of winning the general election,” he said.

Wudilawa described Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as the ideal candidate who embodies the values, competence, and character required to lead Nigeria at this critical juncture.

“Liberal and patriotic forces in the North are rallying around Olawepo-Hashim not because of political sentiment but because of his broad national appeal, integrity, and long-standing commitment to democracy and unity,” he said. “He is a candidate both the North and South can trust.”

Highlighting Olawepo-Hashim’s track record, Wudilawa noted that in the past eight years, no other aspirant in the PDP or APC has demonstrated a deeper insight into national security and economic reform than him.

He also dismissed the often-repeated claim that the PDP presidential ticket in 1999 was zoned to the South, saying General Olusegun Obasanjo was elected not by zoning but by his strong reputation for national unity following military rule.

“Opportunistic politicians often distort history, but the truth is that Obasanjo was chosen in 1999 because of his commitment to the unity of Nigeria. Today, we see that same spirit in Olawepo-Hashim,” Wudilawa said.

The group also reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising nationwide support for a pan-Nigerian presidential agenda.

It stated that such an aspirant should prioritise unity, development, and democratic values above ethnic or regional calculations.
