Giwa FC mark Jos return with a win over Kwara United

Giwa FC backed by their vociferous home fans avenged the first leg loss to Kwara United in Ilorin after they pipped the Harmony Warriors 1-0 at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos yesterday.

The Jos Elephant had lost 3-1 to the Ilorin side two weeks ago but they made amend after Charles Henlong poked home an accurate pass from Ocheme Edoh in the second half of the encounter.

The Marketing Director of the club, Sammy Adesoji hailed the fans in Jos’ Rwang Pam Stadium for trooping to the stadium in large numbers in spite of the EPL Community Shield encounter between Arsenal and Chelsea.

He thumbed up the fans for coming to the home game despite also getting the notice of their return to Jos very late before the match adding that Giwa FC have come back to delight their fans with Glo Premier League actions.

Giwa FC moved to fifth on the log with 34 points from 20 matches while Kwara United are still on 23 points from 20 games.

Meanwhile, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi Heartland clipped the wing of their hosts, Wikki Tourists to record a goalless draw in yesterday’s Glo Premier League Week 20 tie.

The Media Officer of Wikki Tourists, Usman Abbas Shehu told SportingLife that the two teams played very well and that the Naze Millionaires defended well to ensure that the Bauchi side did not see the back of their net.

Wikki are now third on the log with 34 points from 20 games after former occupant of that position, Warri Wolves were beaten 2-1 in Port Harcourt by rejuvenated Sharks.

Heartland on their part moved a step down to sixth on the log despite the away point. They are on 33 points from 20 matches.

    Giwa FC beat IfeanyiUbah

Giwa FC beat FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2-0 to go joint tops with Sunshine Stars that let slip late into their fixture at Abia Warriors to lose 3-2.

Charles Henlong opened scoring for the Jos Elephants on 23rd minute and Ocheme Edoh consolidated on 49th minute to hand Giwa FC their first win in three games.

The win shoots them to 20 points from 11 games, same as table toppers, Sunshine Stars that crashed to Abia Warriors 3-2 in Umuahia.

The drama in Umuahia started early in the game with Stephen Eze handling the ball inside the box on 3rd minute.

Bolaji Sakin made no mistake in converting from the spot for the hosts but three minutes after, old fox, Dele Olorundare restored parity for the Akure Gunners with a simple tap in from close range after Abia Warriors goalkeeper, John Gaadi failed to deal with a defense splitting cross. Match hero, Chisom Chikatara, the famous Kolanut Boy popped up on the 26th minute to restore the host’s lead when he beat an offside trap to beat goalkeeper Danladi Issah for his sixth goal of the season.

Abia Warriors would have doubled their lead four minutes after in a swift counter offensive that was wasted by Michael Ibe Okoro who shot high an illustrious cross from Kalu Nweke. Tunji Adeniji would later capitalize from another John Gaadi fumble to level scores on 77 minute and the winner came for the hosts two minutes into added time when substitute Okorie Torti was brought down inside the box by goalkeeper Issah .

This time, it was Chikatara who made stood over the ball to blaze home to bring final scores at 3-2 and the full points for embattled Coach Ladan Bosso to have some respite.

We chose career over money, says Giwa FC’s Charles Henlong

Giwa FC were a rookie team last season and remarkably finished in the top four of a keenly-contested season, narrowly missing a place to represent Nigeria on the continent.

So, this season, the Jos-based club have shot off the block with a bang and like elephants, they are bamboozling their way through the new season, knocking down top teams and minnows alike.

Over the weekend, the Tony Bulus-tutored side showed no fear whatsoever as they came through their Aba adventure unscathed.

Giwa snatched a point from the more famous Elephants, grinding out a goalless result against Enyimba and holding steady to second position on the log.

Discussing his team’s progress so far in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), captain of the side, Charles Henlong let up on the the secret formula of the team.

“We put off any question of our earnings so that we can concentrate, work hard so we can get such results in the League. It’s not about now but the future, we want to avoid the distraction of money talks for the sake of our careers; chasing money without focus could kill our careers.

“So, we’ve forgotten about the money. We know it’ll come but gradually. And we know if we keep this work ethic and end on top of the table, good clubs from home and abroad will come, this is our aim and that has kept us going,” Henlong told www.footballlive.ng.

Giwa FC will guide against complacency-Bolus

Giwa FC Technical Adviser, Tony Bolus, has admitted that there is plenty of work for his side if they are to remain at the top of the Glo Premier League.

The Jos Elephants moved to the summit of the league following their 4-0 win over Akwa United in the week 5 League game at the Rwang Pam, Stadium, Jos on Wednesday.

Giwa FC have been in superb form this season, taking on-looker with a surprise with a shocking 1-0 away win over Rangers International at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday.

The former Sardaunan FC of Kano coach told SportingLife that God has been the strength of the team in the ongoing campaign, insisting there can be no complacency from Giwa FC if they are to achieve their set target for the season.

“God put us at the top and we appreciate everything God has done for the team. We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that we record good results in every game we played this season,” Bolus told SportingLife.

“We are working in a good atmosphere here in Jos and I must say that we have chairman, Ambassador Chris Giwa who is very passionate about the club. I know it is not easy to remain at the top because other clubs too are aiming at the top. We will work very hard to remain there.

“The good thing is that the players are very focused, determined and ready to give everything to the team. They are happy too. The club slightly missed out on the continental ticket by ended the season on 4th position last season.

“We want to go beyond what we achieve last season and by the grace of God we will achieve it. We are playing Lobi Stars in our next game and we will work to get something out of the game,” the former FC Abuja gaffer said.

  • Abia Warriors’ Onyeali relishes Giwa FC clash

Abia Warriors attacking midfielder, Ifeanyi Onyeali has said his side are prepared for the 2014/15 Glo Premier League match day 1 fixture clash at Giwa FC.

The Umuahia-based side will be the guests of the Tin City side on March 7 at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.

Onyeali said the  encounter against Giwa FC will be quite crucial to the side’s successful campaign.

“We’re quite ready for the upcoming season as well as the match day 1 fixture encounter at Giwa FC in Jos.

“It’s a good pairing for us starting our new league season campaign on the road, I think it’s healthy and will certainly shape a lot of things for us. I believe we’ll kickoff our campaign on a winning note at Giwa FC though we’re equally expecting a difficult challenge, too from the hosts.

“Of course, we attached great importance on the first away match as victory in the match will go a long way to boost our confidence and morale in subsequent matches.

“Last season we’re not too lucky to achieve our continental dream despite the energies we put in to see the target become a reality. However, this time around we’re setting out on that platform to ensure continental ticket don’t elude us.

“That’s our main target and we’re determined to work extremely hard to make it a reality by the time the season will come to an end,” said the former Bussdor United FC marksman to supersport.com.

Abia Warriors pocketed four points off Giwa FC in the out gone 2013/14 Glo Premier League season.

  • Giwa FC hail football fans in Ibadan

Giwa FC hail football fans in Ibadan

The management of Giwa FC has praised the attitude of the football fans of the ancient city of Ibadan for the way they conducted themselves during Sunday’s week 32 Glo Premier League tie against Crown FC at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The Jos Elephants secured a vital away point in the encounter after playing 1-1 draw against Ajilete Boys.

Chris Madaki shot Giwa FC into the lead in the 28th minute when he headed home a free kick taken by Abdulbasit Shittu, his second goal for the club this season even as a defender. Crown FC got an equaliser in the 81st minute via a free kick as well.

The club’s Marketing Director, who now doubles as the assistant coach to coach Aminu Musa, Sammy Adesoji, described them, as ‘Real football fans that appreciate good football’.

Adesoji said the Jos Elephants, who left the Lekan Salami Stadium with one point could have picked maximum three points had their strikers converted all their scoring opportunities.  But he was quick to say that is how God wanted the result.

“I was amazed to see football fans that thronged the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan praising every good and samba move put up by Giwa FC, although, they had no choice because our motivated boys came out smoking from the blast of the whistle to the delight of everybody. Although it’s not new to me, because the same thing happened at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos. If an away team played a sweet brand of football, but I must confess that this is the first time I am seeing it at away.”

Adesoji, who  attributed the success the club has enjoyed so far to God’s favour, Ambassador Chris Giwa’s honest and fatherly touch and the never-say die attitude of the boys to make a name for themselves and the club, said the continental target for the club this season is still intact.

Giwa FC currently occupy the eighth position on the log, with only five points separating them and the league leaders, Kano Pillars with 53points.

  • Giwa FC wants 3 goals, 3 points

Giwa FC wants 3 goals, 3 points

•Says ,our fans didn’t attack anybody

The management of Giwa FC of Jos has demanded that the three points and three goals should be awarded to his side by the League Management Company (LMC) for Thursday’s inconclusive week 33 Glo Premier League game against Sharks FC.

The match, which was played at the Rwang Pam stadium, Jos, was called off when Sharks players protested against the penalty awarded to the home side by centre referee K.S. Akinwale, and refused to continue play.

Narrating what happened during the game to SportingLife, the club’s Marketing Director, who also doubles as assistant coach, Sammy Adesoji, said Sharks FC came to Jos with the aim of causing trouble.

Adesoji said Sharks had showed signs of carrying out something funny right from the pre-match meeting when the Blue Angels officials repeatedly talking about security.

He said their fans are law abiding supporters who love good football and they have never been found wanting by the league body for wrong doing.

He claimed that many clubs like Kano Pillars, Dolphins and Abia Warriors had came to Jos to pick draw this season with their fans still celebrating with away teams.

“Even before the match I smelt the rat with the way sharks officials were behaving during the pre-match meeting. They kept emphasising on  security. And I asked the match commissioner why they are only talking about security. Pillars, Dolphins and Abia Warriors came to Jos and picked draws and nothing happened,” Adesoji said.

“What happened was that the first half ended 0-0 and in the second half our player Ojeme Edoh was hacked in the 18-yard box in the 57th minute and the referee awarded a penalty to us. Sharks coach called their players and they left the pitch and protested against the penalty and they refused to continue the match. For more than 15 minutes they refused to play.

“So tell me how the fans  should be throwing stones. The Sharks player that was bandaged was injured during the match. He had a head on collision with Ojeme. Ojeme could not continue the match and he was stretched out and he was attended to by our medical crew.

“In the first leg in Port-Harcourt, we were leading  1-0 before the referee gave them a controversial penalty for their first goal and they defeated us 2-1. We took it in good faith. I think our coaches should stop blaming referees. Even in the match, the referee was officiating as if sharks were at home. The referee was fair and firm.

“You can never hear Giwa FC blaming the referee no matter what happened. We always take everything in good faith. I was disappointed in Sharks. LMC tried to make the game beautiful and they are trying to kill it with their antics. Why did they abandon the match fans paid for? We went to draw Dolphins in Port Harcourt nothing happened. Let us build the Nigeria league and not destroy it. Our fans are law abiding supporters that will never engage in anything that can bring the game into disrepute. So we are pleading with LMC to look at what happened critically and award three points and three goals to us.”

  • Henlong rues defeat at Sunshine

    Henlong rues defeat at Sunshine

Giwa FC captain and central midfielder Charles Henlong has  said Sunshine Stars’ undeserved penalty prevented his side from mounting an expected comeback in the game.

The Tin City side were pegged 0-2 by the Akure Gunners in the rescheduled Glo Premier League match day 3 clash at the Akure Township Stadium.

Attacking midfielder Medrano Tamen converted a penalty in the 51st minute to give his side the lead while striker Dele Olorundare grabbed the second for the hosts in the 62nd minute.

Henlong said his side never recovered from the setback of the penalty awarded to their opponents as they were further demoralised by the second goal of the crunch encounter.

“The first half ended barren but the early-minute penalty to Sunshine Star in the second half which actually happened outside the 18-yard box was not really good for us, it killed off our fightback and actually destabilised us. Before we knew what was going on, the second goal came and that was it, we couldn’t come back into the game.

“The game was tight as well as difficult, we’ve accepted the result as we look forward to the next game at Sharks in Port Harcourt,” said Henlong to supersport.com.

Henlong, however, assured that his side will fight hard to claim three points during the Glo Premier League match day 12 tie at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

“God won’t allow us to lose nine points in a row that will bring us down on the log. At least we should be able to claim one game as we’ve already lost two straight games at Heartland and Sunshine Stars. “The schedule of the matches is too stressful on us having to travel to three distant cities to play our matches. We’re human; the wear and tear are already visible on us, we’re tired and struggling to keep fit.

“But we’ve promised ourselves that we won’t lose at Sharks no matter the difficulties we’ve to pass through once again,” said Henlong.

  • Duke Udi joins queue for Giwa FC job

Duke Udi joins queue for Giwa FC job

Former Nigeria international, Duke Udi, has been revealed as  one of those in the running for the head coach role at Glo Premier League club, Giwa FC.

Udi is the latest name being thrown into the hat as the Elephants are shopping for a substantive coach to replace Abdullahi Biffo who left unceremoniously in April. In the absence of a head coach, the goalkeeping coach, Aminu Musa, has been in charge of the team.

Already, Kadiri Ikhana had been linked to the job but he distanced himself from taking up the offer in spite of having to travel with Giwa FC’s squad for their league game to Port Harcourt where they drew 1-1 with Dolphins FC.

Udi has now been offered to Giwa FC by influential Nigerian sports officials, who are friends to the owner of the Jos club.

“Duke Udi is one of those who has indicated interest in becoming the coach of Giwa FC,” an official of the club disclosed to Supersport.com.

“You know the club owner (Ambassador Chris Giwa) is close to a lot of people in charge of football in this country and even those at the sports ministry. So, they have been talking to him about Duke Udi being a good prospect and also a former player of a number of clubs in the league too. Right now there is no decision yet on who will be made the new coach.”

Udi, who has played for 3SC, Kwara United, Plateau United and Sunshine Stars in the past, now holds a coaching certificate from one of the soccer associations in the United States of America.

  • Madu targets win against Lobi Stars

Madu targets win against Lobi Stars

    By Taofeek Babalola

Giwa FC midfielder,  Christian Madu, has  sounded that he and his colleagues will not leave anything to chance when his side play host to third placed Lobi Stars at the Rwang Pam Stadium on Wednesday.
Madu, popularly called Patrick Viera, said the only way to prove to the world that their promotion to the Premier League was no fluke is to go all out for the three points at stake.
“We don’t want to relent on our oars and with God on our side, we are gunning for nothing but the three points at stake against Lobi Stars,” Madu told SportingLife.
Madu, who began his professional career with Giwa FC, said he thanked God and the club for giving him the opportunity to show the football world what he can do.
“I went to many clubs for trials but was not picked because I had no money to give and push my case; I just give God the glory for this club that hire the best without sentiments. How I wish there are many privately own club sides in Nigeria because I believe there are still hundreds of good players out there wasting away just because they don’t have money or to play for all these big clubs in Nigeria.
“I am surprised when clubs call me to come play for them with big money on offer, but where were they before Giwa FC gave me the opportunity? I have made up my mind to give all my best to this club now and I want to win trophies with the club before thinking to call it quit with the club that have put me in the limelight.”
