    Glo out with Mobile Rhapsody

    Nigeria’s National carrier, Globacom, has said that the newly launched Rhapsody of Realities, a daily devotional mobile service on its network, will add value to the spiritual lives of Christians.

    In a press release issued in Lagos on Friday, the leading telecommunications outfit disclosed that the innovation, which contains reading and voice contents, was designed for the spiritual edification of the Christian faithful.

    According to the company, the materials in the daily devotional are based on the Rhapsody of Realities devotional published monthly by Christ Embassy Church, one of the fastest growing Pentecostal churches with large followership in Nigeria and South Africa. Rhapsody of Realities has been rated in some quarters as the number one daily devotional in the world with translations in various languages.

    The ROR Mobile Service from Glo is a Value Added Service that offers subscribers the opportunity to receive Rhapsody of Realities content on their phone via Interactive Voice Response, (IVR) text message or WAP.  According to Mr. Ashok Israni, Globacom’s Chief Regional Marketing Officer, the service is offered in English, Hausa and Pidgin English.

    Israni explained that the service comes in the following versions –  E-Rhapsody and  Download, ROR Voice Services and the Daily ROR SMS service. The E-Rhapsody and Download is an electronic version of ROR in which  a subscriber will receive a link to download a PDF version of ROR.  Content will be in text format (PDF) supported by mobile OS, Androids, Blackberry, Windows phone, iPhone and any data enabled devices.

    “The Daily ROR is SMS-based and the subscriber receives a text message, which will have a mini URL for more of the message to be read from Rhapsody of Realities WAP portal,”  Israni explained

    ROR Voice Service is the voiced Rhapsody of Realities reading for the day. For ROR voice content, subscribers will get an out-bound call daily with content in the language subscribed for.

    The subscriber can subscribe to the ROR voice service by sending the corresponding activation keyword to a particular short code. Israni said that for Voice ROR in English, subscribers are required to Text VROR to 55515; for Voice ROR in Pidgin, text VRORP to 55515; for Voice ROR in Hausa, text  VRORH to 55515 and for ROR SMS, text ROR to 55515.

    For E-download, the text is  EROR to the short code 55515 . Subscribers will only get the content for the service subscribed for. For instance, if one subscribes for ROR English, he will get the content in English accordingly.

    According to Globacom, one can also dial 55515 on the IVR portal to listen to the IVR instructions on how to activate the ROR services. Israni disclosed that Subscription to the Rhapsody of reality voice is affordable with content costing N35 for 3 days or  N70 per week.

  • Glo sweeps medals at Beacon of ICT Awards

    National telecoms operator, Globacom, has bagged three awards at this year’s Beacon of ICT Awards which was held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    The telco won Best Telecoms Company of the Year, Most Innovative Mobile Player of the Year and Undersea Cable Company of the Year which were keenly contested by several other telecommunications companies.

    The organisers of the event, publishers of CommunicationsWeek, explained that an online poll conducted between December, last year and March 30, this year in which about 900,000 respondents participated showed that Globacom surpassed other nominees to emerge tops.

    Globacom’s revolutionary role in the telecoms industry earned it the Best Telecoms Company award. The company’s continued investment in novel technology for boosting service delivery also contributed to the award.

    Presenting the award to Globacom, Mr Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, noted that the company had remained the pride of the country in the industry ever since its per second billing innovation.

    Globacom earned the Most Innovative Mobile Player award for pioneering most innovations in the telecoms industry. The organisers lauded Globacom for introducing innovative voice and data services distinguishing itself as industry leader.

    Ken Nwogbo, publisher of CommunicationsWeek, said the online respondents considered the emergence of Glo 1 as a major bandwidth provider in West Africa before voting Globacom the Undersea Cable Company of the Year.

    “Glo 1 has become the preferred bandwidth service provider for several companies in telecoms, oil and gas, construction, banking, and manufacturing and other critical sectors in Nigeria and in the West African sub region” Nwogbo said.

  • Glo gives subscribers 200% bonus airtime

    National operator, Globacom has launched three packages that offer subscribers the most affordable call rates in the telecoms industry.

    The offers in the bouquet are 200 per cent bonus airtime and data, Glo Bounce and Data Bundles on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Galaxy S6 Flat smart phones.

    Its Regional Chief Marketing Officer, Mr. Ashok Israni, who unveiled the offers, said the 200 per cent bonus offer is aimed at empowering its subscribers to derive much more value and satisfaction from using the network, adding that to enjoy the bonus airtime, subscribers need to dial *200# to get on the bonus platform.

    On the platform, any recharge of N200 and above instantly gives Glo subscribers 200 per cent bonus airtime subscribers can use to call any network any time of the day within seven days. In addition, they get extra N200 they can use to call 10 family and friends. The Family and Friends feature is activated by dialing *101*1*phone number of the family or friend.

    Mr. Israni said the subscriber also gets free 15megabytes (MB) of data instantaneously. In addition, he said the subscriber will receive one minute free airtime for every three minutes of call to any one person.

    For subscribers who load N100, they get instant bonus of 100 percent and 5MB of free data.

    Mr. Israni said Glo Bounce will facilitate seamless and affordable communication among young subscribers.

    According to him, the product allows subscribers who sign up to the plan to call each other at a heavily discounted rate of 11 kobo per second.

    The Bounce product, which has been significantly enhanced, also has a feature tagged ‘Campus Zone’ which when activated by customers will enable them to call  other lines at the rate of 11 kobo per second.

    In addition, they will get 15MB free for every recharge of N200 and above. They also get unlimited , free SMS with the offer.

    To get on the Bounce platform, subscribers are requested to dial *170*4#. To opt for Campus Zone, they are required to dial *170*9#.

    They also have an option of migrating to Generation G to enjoy the 200 percent bonus airtime  on every recharge of N500 and above; 100 percent bonus on recharges of N200; and 50 percent bonus on recharges of N100. To get on the Generation G platform, customers need to dial*170*5#.

    The third offer launched at the press conference is on the latest Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, which comprises Samsung Galaxy S6 Flat and Samsung Galaxy Edge.

    Mr. Israni explained that the devices have been bundled with free SIM and 4.5GB data upon activation by customers.

    FIfa U-20 World Cup Qualification: Glo congratulates Flying Eagles

    Telecommunications company and leading sponsor of Football in Nigeria, Globacom has congratulated the National Under-20 team,  the Flying Eagles for qualifying for  the semi finals of 2015 African Youth Championship (AYC) in Senegal.

    The team defeated Congo Brazzaville by 4-1 in their second Group A match and has successfully booked a place in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Finals holding in New Zealand in June.

    The Flying Eagles will meet Cote d’ Ivoire in the last group match on Saturday.

    A statement from Globacom in Lagos on Thursday said the Flying Eagles have all it takes to overcome the challenge of their opponents, adding that the team should concentrate and keep working towards winning the Trophy.

    “Nigeria has the ability to retain the trophy and we believe the players are equal to the task,” the statement added.

    Globacom commended the fighting spirit of the young Nigerians who, despite losing a player to red card in the first half still when ahead and defeated the Congolese by 4-1.

    The company is quite optimistic that the Flying Eagles will continue to excel, especially because the team has the benefit of  many of the players playing together since their Golden Eaglets days.

    “The Flying Eagles presently top group A with six points, followed by Cote d’ Ivoire with 2 points, while Congo Brazzaville and host Senegal have 1 point each .

    The top four teams in the championship will represent Africa in New Zealand in June.

    Globacom is the major partner of Nigeria Football Federation and official sponsor of Nigerian National teams.

    However, after booking their place in the semifinal of the AYC, the Flying Eagles have swung into action ahead of next week’s clash for a place in the championship game as team officials are in Mbour today to watch second round of matches in Group B.

    Assistant coach Nduka Ugbade and Rafiu Yusuf from the NFF technical department are at the Caroline Faye Stadium in Mbour to watch South Africa battle Mali and Ghana take on Zambia.

    Ghana Black Satellites, who the Flying Eagles beat and drew with in recent series of warm-up matches, lead Group B after they defeated South Africa 2-0 and Mali pipped Zambia 1-0.

    Nigeria, already on six points after two rounds of matches, will finish top of Group A no matter the results of final group games on Saturday and so they will battle the runners-up in Group B for a place in the AYC final.

    Second national carrier, Globacom, has said subscribers to its network have within the last two months received about N28billion worth of airtime from the Glo Overload Reloaded promo which is running.

    A re-launch of the promo earlier this year provided expansion to 400 per cent bonus airtime for a recharge of N200 and above, that is twice the initial 200 per cent bonus. The promo was one of those launched in the last quarter of 2014 which was designed to reward loyal and faithful subscribers.

    With more than 7,000 subscribers joining the promo and enjoying the benefits accruable since the re-launch, the company has given out  N27,523,577,800 bonus airtime to its subscribers.

    In the promo, a recharge of N200 gives a value of N1000 instantly, which is five times the value of recharge. N500 recharge gives the subscriber N2, 500 airtime value; N1000 gives N5000; N2000 gives N10,000; while N5000 gives N25,000 value.

    The bonus airtime can be used by subscribers to make calls to Glo lines and send SMS between 10pm and 8am. The validity period ranges from two to 15 days.

    Data subscribers on the network have also been enjoying the bonus. For example, a N2,500 data plan instantly gets 4.5GB worth of data, N5,000 gives 12GB, and N8000 gives 24GB of data.

    Also, customers who subscribe to the promo have the opportunity to be among the 120 millionaires that the promo will produce. Having produced 40 millionaires so far, 80 more will be announced in the next few weeks.

    Francis Oshin, a Glo subscriber, said the promo was a blessing to the industry.

    Title sponsor of the Glo Premier League, Globacom, has sent a welcome message to all the clubs in the Premier League, their management, the League Management Company, fans and the Nigeria Football Federation as the new premier league season formally kicks off on Saturday.

    “Last season was wonderful and the memory lingers. The entire stakeholders contributed positively towards the success. We look forward to an interesting 2014/2015 League season,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos on Thursday.

    It is a thing of joy to see that the Glo Premier league is growing in leaps and bounds and gradually working its way to become the number one in Africa,” Globacom added.

    The telecommunications company enjoined the management of Clubs to institutionalise training workshops for both the players and their coaches in order to keep them abreast of new rules and regulations governing the game.

    The company also commends football fans for the complementary roles they played last season and urged them to do more and troop out in large numbers to the venues of league matches in order to keep the stadia alive.

    “We also request the clubs to keep educating the fans on the need to shun violence at all times.  We urge them to provide adequate security for all stakeholders at the different stadia across the country,” Glo stated further.

    The season’s fixtures drawn recently pitched Heartland FC against the reigning League Champions’ Pillars FC of Kano in the Opening Day game billed for Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri (now postponed) while new entrants into the elite league, Wikki Tourists of Bauchi, Kwara United FC of Ilorin, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Gabros FC of Nnewi will seek to get results on their return to the premiership.

    Globacom also congratulated the four Nigerian club sides participating in the 2015 CAF Continental Championships for their impressive results last weekend. The quartet of Enyimba of Aba, Warri Wolves, Kano Pillars and Dolphin of Port Harcourt all qualified for the next round of their various competitions.

    Title Sponsor of Glo Premier League and  the just concluded Glo Super 6, Globacom, has congratulated Flying Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, for emerging the Most Valuable Player(MVP) at the Super 6 Championship.

    Awoniyi, a former World Cup-winning Golden Eaglets forward who scored in every match, propelled the Flying Eagles to the ultimate victory in the nine-day competition that also saw reigning Glo Premier League champions, Pillars FC of Kano, former champions, Enyimba FC of Aba, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt, Warri Wolves and the national U-23 team as participants.

    The telecommunications giant also praised organisers of the Super 6, the League Management Company (LMC) for their vision, saying Nigeria needs such competitions to improve on its football quality.

    26,000 Katsina civil servants benefit from Glo free lines

    Over 26,000 civil servants in Katsina State will receive free SIM cards under the Globacom National Free Access Programme designed to improve the way government workers live, play and interact.

    Receiving the package on behalf of the workers, Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema represented by the State Head of Service, Alhaji Muhammad Lawal Aliyu, commended Globacom for the gesture and promised that the facilities would be utilised to improve government business and promote cordiality among government workers.

    He praised Globacom for preparing a directory of all government functionaries from the governor and key officers to the least worker at both the state and local government levels, observing that this would engender friendlier business environment in the state.

    Earlier, Globacom’s Head of  Public Sector, Babatunde Amunikoro, who said the project would facilitate ease of communications among civil servants in the state, thanked the state government for partnering with Globacom to connect workers through the cost effective scheme.

    He said: “The package will enhance security measures across the length and breadth of the state and significantly increase efficiency in the state civil service,” adding that the package is aimed to improve the way civil servants interact.

    National carrier, Globacom has unveiled a new promo which offers lucky subscribers a grand prize of N5 million and several consolation prizes, including an opportunity to sing with their favourite Glo Ambassadors in a recording contract.

    In a statement, the telco said the promo is tagged “Say it Loud – Say it with Love, adding that it is a mega Interactive Voice Response (IVR) contest that allows subscribers to sing a song, recite a poem or tell a joke, all dedicated to their family in 45 seconds.

    To participate in the promo, subscribers are urged to dial a short code 54887 to record and upload their 45-second song, poem or a joke for N50 on the portal.

    The subscriber will then receive an SMS with his individual ID number (54888xxxxx). This number could be dialed to vote for the participant. N20 is charged per vote. Voters are also rewarded with exciting prizes. To vote for any participant, one can dial 54888, listen to the song, poem or joke and then vote for the content.

    The promo, which started on January 23, will last for 100 days.  Apart from the star prize of N5 million, three winners will each take home N2.5million monthly; 14 winners will receive N1million each in prizes weekly and there will be 3,600 hourly prizes of N2,500 in airtime and 200 daily prizes of N25,000 cash.

    In addition, 10 subscribers will sign a contract to have their songs as caller ring back tunes and composers of the top three songs will have the opportunity to record a remix of their entries with a Glo Ambassador, a proposition that will make the contestants rich and famous.     50-year-old farmer  who just came out of detention for a minor traffic offence and a musician, are among the 20 winners that were presented with their N1million cheque  each at the on-going N120 million Glo Overload promo.
