    Glo urges Eaglets, Ghana’s Black Starlets to show class

    TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant, Globacom and official sponsor of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian national teams, has tasked the U-17 teams of both countries to show world class performances as they begin their campaign in the Africa U-17 Championship today.

    Nigeria and Ghana will square it up in the second Group B game after Congo and Cote d’Ivoire would have opened the group’s account in Marakech, Morocco.

    According to a statement from Globacom in Lagos on Saturday, the Eaglets and the Black Starlets have all it takes to go all the way in the competition.

    “We are convinced that the preparation by the Eaglets and Black Starlets for this championship will help their resolve to make Nigeria and Ghana proud,” the statement said.

    “In the same vein, we are appealing to Nigerians and Ghanaians to support their respective representatives in the tournament.”

    The Eaglets had a smooth qualifying round towards the Morocco cadet championship, beating all the opponents before proceeding to Qatar for a training tour that saw them draw 1-1 with Qatari top division side, Al Saad which paraded former Spain international, Raul Gonzales.

    Globacom is the major partner of NFF and official sponsor of Nigerian national teams.

    Glo set to present Range Rover Sports, Toyota Camry to Keshi

    Telecoms giant and official sponsor of the Nigerian national football teams, Globacom is ready to present two exotic automobiles to Stephen Keshi, Chief Coach of the Nigerian senior football team, the Super Eagles.

    The exotic cars, including the latest model Range Rover Sports and the latest model Toyota Camry saloon car, are already on display at the Mike Adenuga Towers, Corporate Headquarters of Globacom. The cars will be presented to Keshi on Monday.

    Chairman of the company, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. (GCON) had pledged the two vehicles to Keshi when the Super Eagles won the African Nations Cup for the first time in 19 years at the competition in South Africa earlier in February 2013.

    In a press statement, Globacom said that the gesture was meant to reward hardwork and resourcefulness of the coach and encourage Nigerians to selflessly undertake any national assignment they are entrusted with.

    Dr. Adenuga had earlier presented $1m to the members of the victorious Super Eagles and organised a grand reception in their honour.

    LEADING Telecommunication operator, Globacom, has called on the National team, Super Eagles to make Nigerians happy by putting up superlative performance during the forthcoming African Cup of Nations scheduled to begin in South Africa on Saturday, 19th January, 2013.

    Globacom in a press statement issued in Lagos on Monday advised the Eagles to tackle every match from the group stages with determination and zeal to win, adding that this will guide them progressively to the final stages of the competition.

    “The group matches are very crucial and the Eagles must emerge victorious to lead the group,” the statement added.

    Globacom therefore advised the team to work very hard and defeat the Burkinabe’s in the first match in order to make the subsequent group matches less cumbersome.

    The Company also acknowledged and commended the rebuilding process undertaken by the Stephen keshi-led technical crew.

    “We are monitoring the preparation being made by the Nigeria Football Federation and we are calling on Nigerians to support the team right from the first match against Burkina Faso,” Glo added.

    The Telecoms giant wished the Super Eagles a successful outing in the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

    THE MAIDEN edition of Glo Golf Tour West Africa ended on Sunday night in Otukpo, Benue State with a big bang as Globacom doled out N20m cash, a brand new car, motorcycles, sewing machines and other prizes to pros and amateurs who won in the Grand Finale, including the Senate President, Senator David mark and his wife Helen.

    The Senate President, playing with handicap 12 won the veterans men event with a score of 176 gross in the 36-hole event on the Otukpo Golf and Country Club while his wife led the women’s field with a score of 251 gross.

    David Mark, Helen Mark,the Och’ Otukpo, Dr. John Eimonye, and over thirty other amateurs who won in several categories received different prizes from Globacom at the prize giving ceremony and Gala night which featured top-rated artistes including afro-calypso star, Lagbaja and comedian Okey Bakassi among others.

    Commenting during the event, Senator Mark said the Glo Golf Tour West Africa 2012 was a huge success not only because the highest ranked professional golfers in West Africa participated in the tournament but also because of the exceptional quality of organisation, the N62.5m unprecedented prize money and the glamorous closing ceremony.

    He said that by solely sponsoring the Glo Golf Tour 2012 with its scale and class, Globacom had done what he had always preached that the corporate sector should step in to support sports development in the country. He singled out the Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga whom he described as his friend and brother, for special commendation for his massive support for sports development in West Africa.

    He explained that no sports was elitist, contrary to the opinion of many that golf was. He pointed out that many of those who won prizes in the amateur categories were youths who were not very well to do. He said that every sport was capable of bringing glory to a nation.

    He announced that for the next five years, the Glo Golf Tour grand finale would be held in Otukpo and called on the pros to improve their game as the Otukpo Golf Course would be upgraded to be more challenging.

    “Once you play here (in Otukpo) after the upgrade, you can play on any course in the world and do well,” he said.

    Senator Mark also announced that next year, the West African Glo Golf Tour would be upgraded to an African Golf Tour, attracting top-most players from Africa and the rest of the world.

    Also during the grand finale witnessed by many dignitaries including Assistant Inspector General of Police , Mr. Ilesanmi Aguda, the winner of the hole-in-one car prize, Mohamed Liman collected his car prize while Ghana’s Emos Korblah, Vincent Torgah and Edet Umoh who came first second and third respectively in the professional competition also received their cheques.

    Twenty four winners in other categories including, the men’s category 2 handicap 6-12, men’s category 3 handicap 13-18 and Ladies Handicap 0-18 and Handicap 19-37 all received various prizes including motorcycles, refrigerators, microwave ovens, DVD players, Golf kits, clippers, dryers among others. Felix Pam of the IBB Golf and Country Club won the category one prize being the only surviving Category One player to advance with the pros in the 72-hole pro competition. The icing on the cake was when the Director of the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria, Festus , emerged winner of N1million through a raffle draw for veterans only.

  • Glo donates classrooms, ICT lab

    National Telecoms Operator, Globacom, has reiterated its commitment to improving the lives of future leaders in Nigeria.

    It said this during the donation a block of fully equipped classrooms to Ijebu Muslim School, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, as part of the activities marking the 2012 Ojude Oba festival.

    At the commissioning of the block of classrooms and an ICT laboratory on yesterday, Globacom said this was one of the many projects it designed as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility drive.

    The telecom operator last promised to deliver the block of classrooms during last year’s festival.

    Its Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs. Ben Ayede, said the company is committed to providing facilities that will assist youths become the best in their various endeavours.

    Ayede explained: “We are mindful of the fact that government alone cannot successfully fund a functional educational system.

    “This block of five classrooms is enriched with an IT centre, 50 internet-enabled computers and fully furnished classrooms with students and teachers’ desks and chairs.

    “The facility will make the world indeed a global village for the students and teachers of this great college.”

    She also said the facilities would empower the students of the college and other scholars to reach the world at the speed of light. Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, applauded Globacom for the donation.

    The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Education, Dr Tunji Abimbola, said: “We’ll take the photographs of this facility and recommend it as the standard structure for schools in the state”.

    He said Globacom has done what is unprecedented by making provision for disabled students.

    Amosun said: “I challenge the students and teachers of this school to put the facility into good use.

    “I also call on others in the private sector to emulate Glo and partner with the state government in providing ultra modern facilities for our schools.”

    The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who was represented by the Baagbimo of Ijebuland, Chief Fassy Yusuff, commended Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga (GCON) for the kind gesture which he said demonstrated his commitment to the cause of humanity.

    He advised business organisations to take a cue from Globacom, adding that successful business ventures must give back to the society to sustain mutually- beneficial relationships.

  • Glo to rock Ojude Oba festival

    Globacom has reiterated its commitment to re-position the Ojude Oba festival celebration in order for the annual cultural fiesta to attract investments in tourism in Ijebu land.

    Speaking at the pre-event press conference at the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State to herald the 2012 edition, which holds on 28th October 2012, Head of Marketing, Globacom, Mr. Adeniyi Olukoya, said that firm is committed to the success of the festival.

    He reassured that it will introduce some exceptional milestones that would stimulate local and international investment in tourism in Ijebuland and Ogun state.

    According to him, Globacom recognised the “Ojude Oba festival as a social melting-pot where all divergent issues affecting the growth and lives of the people in the community are discussed; where the ijebus both home and abroad congregate as brothers and sisters and share similar ideas of bringing developments to their community.”

    The secretary of the Ojude Oba 2012 Planning Committee, Alhaji Kayode Alatise, expressed appreciation to Globacom for partnering with the planning committee for seven consecutive years, noting that the company’s participation had raised the bar of the festival to a world class convergence of people and ideas.

     

  • Obi hails Glo for helping to revamp Nigeria

    Anambra State  Governor Peter Obi has hailed telecommunications giant Globacom for initiating projects that will help to build a better nation.

    The governor spoke in Onitsha at the inauguration of a block of classrooms which the company built at the Metropolitan College.

    The project is part of the company’s sponsorship of the Ofala Festival, a popular yearly event in the town.

    Obi said Globacom has demonstrated that “it is a company that truly cares about the future of this great country”.

    The governor noted that the burden would be less on government, “if corporate organisations can do what Globacom is doing and partner the people and the government to bring about a better society”.

    After inspecting the facilities in the classrooms, he said: “I must confess that this structure and the facilities therein show the passion Globacom has for this country. This is because when you train the young ones and give them a solid foundation, you can have a better future and society. The facilities in this block are world-class and we sincerely commend Globacom for bringing this to Onitsha.”

    The governor was in company of Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha.

    The monarch said it was heart-warming to note that Globacom kept the promise it made a year ago at the foundation-laying ceremony of the block of classrooms.

    He said most schools in Nigeria have “become dilapidated and have become relics of their past ”.

     

    Igwe Achebe added: “We need private and corporate interventions, like this, to help salvage the educational system in Nigeria. We are happy that Globacom kept its promise to deliver this structure in 12 months and it is important for us to maintain this structure. I want to use this opportunity to call on other corporate bodies in Nigeria to emulate Globacom and bail out our educational system.”

    Globacom Chairman Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. said the banquet “is a celebration of the Obi of Onitsha as a man of honour, a distinguished and detribalised Nigerian, an accomplished captain of industry and an iconic figure who, in the last 10 years on the throne, has devoted his energy, wisdom and resources to improving the lives of his people and putting Onitsha Kingdom in the global economic and cultural maps”.

    Highlight of the banquet was the cutting of the anniversary cake by Igwe Achebe. The cake was donated by Globacom.

    At the inauguration of the block of classrooms, the principal of the college, Mr. C. C. Anazonwu, said the building of the structure “is geared towards empowering our youths by creating an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning”.

    Globacom’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mrs. Ben Ayede, explained that the partnership between Globacom and Onitsha residents on Ofala Festival had begun to yield good results with the empowerment of over 100 youths and the building of classrooms.

    Mrs. Ayede said the company “is irrevocably committed to any projects that are tagged at eliminating poverty and empowering the Nigerian people in all facets of life”.

    At the Ofala Royal Banquet, organised in honour of the monarch to mark this year’s festival and his 10th year anniversary on the throne, Igwe Achebe said Globacom has brought succor to the people.

    He said the likes of Adenuga Jnr. “are few and hard to come by in Nigeria”.
