Nigeria’s national operator, Globacom, said it has disconnected from its network, the subscriber identification module (SIM) that failed to meet the June 30 deadline set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Globacom’s Coordinator, Marketing, Mr. Adeniyi Olukoya, who disclosed this to The Nation in Lagos, said as a law abiding corporate citizen, the telco has complied with the directive of the NCC on deactivating unregistered SIMs hitherto active on its neteork.

He said though the move may have inevitably led to revenue loss to the telco, it was vital that the laws of the land be obeyed by the brand. He said the need to know the customers on the telco’s network underscored the exercise.

“It is important for us to know who is holding a SIM card because of so many things happening hese days that are associated with the use of mobile phones. So, it is a right step taken by the government.

  • Glo entertains Abuja youths

It was a night to remember as telecommunication giant Glo held Abuja residents spellbound at the maiden edition of the Glo Slide and Bounce.

The event, which took place at the expansive Thisday Dome, featured Nigeria’s finest artistes in concert.

But for the dexterity of the anchorman, Okey Bakasi, the restless youths were almost set to abandon the show which was scheduled to start 7pm. His hilarious jokes and recharge card freebies helped to defuse tension.

Eventually, at about 11pm, the concert started with the delectable Chi, whose youthfulness charmed the crowd. Next came Bezhiwa Idakula, otherwise known as Bez. His performance, tailored along Asa’s style, was refreshing for the crowd that has started warming up to the party.

Waje and her sonorous voice stepped onto the stage with some cool tunes  before Naeto C climbed the stage to pull the roof down with one hit song after another. He gave Abuja a tip of what made him a top-rated music artiste in Nigeria. Being a showman, the youthful crowd did not only follow him round the hall as he climbed one table after the other to get closer to the crowd; they sand along with him.

By this time, the crowd went wild when Burna Boy took to the stage. The Port Harcourt-based new sensation did not disappoint the crowd as he lived up to his rating. The crowd sang along with him too as he reeled out his hits.

Omawumi took her turn and the energy she brought to the stage was electrifying. The Abuja youths did not disappoint her as the response showed that she was well appreciated.

In the words of the Glo Divisional Director, North West),  Kemi Kaka, the idea behind the concert was not only to give back to the teeming customers of the telecom outfit but also to show appreciation to the youths from the federal capital city  and its environs.

“As you can see, we have to control the crowd which was why we stated that it is strictly on invitation. The size of this crowd shows how much our brand is appreciated. The event mainly is to provide opportunity for our youths and so that is why we are also going to unlock one youth here”.

The Minister of Culture, Duke Edem, who came in a little after midnight, expressed the appreciation of the government for the event while assuring that government is determined to provide the enabling platform for such events to take place around the country.

“Government’s role is to provide the enabling environment for events like this to be sustained, going by the added value attached to it for our youths. As a government, we are encouraging other private sector players to emulate what Glo is doing,” he added.

The masked one, Lagbaja and P Square also ensured that the show lived up to its billing with scintillating performances.

  • For some Glo music contestants, N24m is the ‘X Factor’

For some Glo music contestants, N24m is the ‘X Factor’

THE tall dream for some music wannabes who have been auditioned for the X Factor music reality show, being championed by telecommunication company, Globacom, is to someday be in the spotlight and be celebrated as successful commercial artistes. The desire from one man to another is, however, a matter of different strokes, and others are just out for the instant prize of N24 million that the competition is staking on the will-be winner.

A few comments here and there from aspirants during the Lagos audition of the show at Dream Studios, Omole, Lagos last weekend explain the dispositions of the ardent contestants who have their eyes fixed on the cash money. Mrs. Pat Omohie, forty-nine year-old mother of three daughters from Delta State who doubles as a musician and actress by profession, says she has her eyes firmly fixed on the money prize. Mrs. Omohie, who currently stars in a popular Television soap opera, Tinsel, with a music album entitled “keeper of my head” to her credit, hopes to win the X Factor singing competition to help boost her musical career which she said is currently at a “struggling level”. She, however, hopes that the prize money of 24 million will go a long way to make a difference in her life.

For twenty-one-year-old orphan, Victory Udoh from Akwa Ibom, a student of a French School in Benin Republic, Glo’s N24 million will transform her life. “I will dedicate the win to the memory of my late mum who died of cancer just four years after our father died,” she stated. According to her, “since our mother died, paying my school fees has been my greatest problem. But as very determined person I hope to win the prize money to lift my siblings from suffering and also establish my singing career,” she said after her auditions.

Twenty-seven-year-old Edo-based Chichi Agu is also in the competition for the prize money. After qualifying for the next round, she declared excitedly: “If I win the N24 million, I will use the money to improve my singing career and also open a dancing school because I love dancing a lot.”

On what she intends to gain from the auditioning, she stated, “I hope to learn from the judges and professional instructors that will be there to sharpen our skills in the house.” Chichi is not new to singing auditions as she had before now participated in other singing reality shows including Glo Naija Sings, Peak Talent Show, Nigerian Idol, and Amstel Malta Box Office.

In the same vein, a physically challenged singer, Sly Kelly, aged 29, said he would use the money to transform his status in life. “I am fully determined not to allow my disability to discourage me. Like every other person here, I hope to make a difference if selected and if I win, I will also use part of the money to assist other talented singers who have one disability or another.”

Another physically challenged contestant, Sir Ben Joe, said he would invest the money in promoting his musical career. He added that he would also spend part of the money on the good things of life.

Glo mobile subscribers get free Facebook access

National Telecoms Operator, Globacom has launched the Glo Zero Facebook,  which gives millions of subscribers on the network free access to Facebook pages on their mobile phones without paying for data subscription or airtime.

A statement signed by Globacom’s Marketing Coordinator, Mr. Niyi Olukoya said with the Glo Zero Facebook, Globacom has empowered its subscribers to network and socialize on Facebook free of charge.

“The implication of this awesome service is that our subscribers can now keep in touch with their friends, family and even business associates on the social network site, Facebook from their Glo lines without having any data subscription or airtime on their phones,” Olukoya said.

To access the service, Olukoya advised subscribers to type zero.facebook.com, 0.facebook.com or o.facebook.coms in the uniform resource locator (url) box on the web page, adding that the new mobile sites include all the key features of Facebook which are optimized for speed with zero data charges.

The statement further states that customers will only pay for data charges when they view photos or when they leave 0.facebook.com to browse other mobile sites. “When you click to view a photo or browse another mobile site, a notification page will appear to confirm that you will be charged if you want to leave 0.facebook.com“, explained Olukoya.

Globacom said that Zero Facebook is designed to solve the twin major challenges people around the world face when using the mobile internet – speed and cost of data.

“With this Product, the subscriber can update his status, view News Feeds, like or comment on Posts, send and reply to Messages, or write on Friends’ Wall just as we do on Facebook.com. Rather than making photos viewable on 0.facebook.com, the photos are one click away, so it doesn’t slow down the experience. You can still view any photos on Facebook if you want, but your regular data fees will apply,” the statement said.

According to Olukoya, “there is a lot of content on the Web and many customers do not have any idea about how to get it.  Globacom wants to bring this vast resource closer to the subscriber at no cost”.
