  • Glo marks 20 years

    Glo marks 20 years

Globacom has extended its heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians for their unalloyed support for the past two decades that the company rolled out services.

Globacom commenced operations on Tuesday, August 29, 2003. The company stated that it has consistently brought innovation, quality service delivery and affordable telecommunication services to its subscribers since then.

“It has been two decades of transforming the telecommunications landscape, fulfilling dreams, and positively affecting the lives of millions of Nigerians. We thank the government, our subscribers, business partners and other stakeholders for their faith in the company,” Globacom stated in a press statement yesterday in Lagos.

Glo noted that it has been at the forefront of revolutionary changes in the telecommunication sector in Nigeria. It crashed the cost of acquiring SIM cards in the country from about N25,000 to just about N200. The network also disappointed bookmakers as it launched operations on a Per Second Billing platform, a feat others had described as impossible to achieve until another five years.

Prominent among the innovations Glo pioneered in Nigeria are Blackberry, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Magic Plus, Glo Direct, Glo Fonepals, Africhat, Glo Mobile Internet, GloFleetmanager, M-Banking and Glo Mobile Office. Glo was also the first to launch 2.5G, 3G and 4G LTE networks.

It also singlehandedly built an international submarine cable, Glo 1 to connect West Africa directly to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. It also connects 12 nations in the West African sub region, including some of them that are landlocked.

Glo1 is credited with crashing the cost of internet services and is today the preferred cable system by global OTT providers. It connects thousands of kilometres of national fibre to all parts of Nigeria.

According to Globacom, “As we celebrate our achievements these past twenty years, we wish to acknowledge that Globacom’s huge success is a result of the support of millions of Nigerians. We wish to thank them for their love and patronage and for the unprecedented confidence they have consistently shown in the company”.

Restating its commitment to the corporate promise it made at launch, the company said “We will remain a catalyst for socio-economic empowerment not only in Nigeria but also in Africa. We will also continue to invest massively in new technologies to exceed customer expectations”.

Though she noted that stereotypes and discrimination had discouraged many girls from pursuing interests in ICT, she stresed the  need to break the stereotypes early in life to propel females towards developing interest in the ICT sector.

“Increasingly, more women across the world were proving their mettle in the male-dominated, technical professions. Examples abound  of women who have distinguished themselves in engineering, medicine and other related professions. As girl students, you must therefore, never let anyone limit your possibilities. If you set your mind to it, there is nothing you cannot achieve as a girl.”

She said research  had shown that there was a nexus between ICT and economic growth of a country, culminating in enhanced emphasis  on ICT by policy-makers  with a view to ensuring that the sector flourishes in future.

  • How Glo celebrates customers through TV Commercials

The launch of Glo into the Nigerian telecom market 15years ago was not just a happenstance. Rather, it was an epochal brand initiative which involved a forensic research about what the average Nigerian phone users wanted. Way back in the years, the two major competitors in the telecom sector had a uniform billing system that gave no care nor concern for the economic wellbeing of their impoverished subscribers. Having done its homework very well before the launch, and also poised to give the best value for money, so that its customers can come in large numbers and remain with the network, the Glo brand introduced per-second billing platform.

With this, it rolled out world class services covering thousands of cities, towns and villages just within a few months of operations. This opened up the telecom category to every citizen irrespective of ethnic nationality, creed or income, enabling them to be the one with the rest of the world

Not the one to rest on its oars, Glo launched a unique campaign on data services with the big idea of Glo Data is Oxygen TVC. It is not in doubt that the choice of oxygen is sine quan non as this is one of life’s most essential ingredient. Without it, life is impossible. Therefore, by saying Data is life, the TVC highlights the importance of Glo data to life and how it offers solutions to life’s challenges. This portrays Glo as emphatic to the needs of subscribers by providing cutting-edge solutions to whatever problems they are grappling with.

Still operating on its tradition and culture of the big idea in its creative advertising, Glo launched the Superior Network TVC. This TVC chronicles the various milestones of the brand since inception, emphasizing the company’s unique propositions. It starts with the power of a seed morphing into 190 million connections in various cities of the world. On the whole, it emphasizes Glo’s resolve to make telephone available, affordable and accessible into a world class manner. The commercial celebrates customer empowerment as underpinning everything it does. It concluded with an undisputable claim that Glo is the superior network.

  • Why we are sponsoring  African Voices – Glo

Globacom, national telecommunications operator and exclusive sponsor of African Voices on CNN International, says the need to give Africa a genuine platform to tell its own story informed its decision to sponsor the programme since 2010.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the company, Mrs Bella Disu, said this at the 10th Anniversary Cocktail held by CNN in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday to celebrate a decade of uninterrupted broadcast of the programme.

She told the audience,  which comprised Glo dealers, publishers and chief executive officers of major media organisations, popular bloggers, entertainment stars and prominent Nigerians, that CNN African Voices had, in the past ten years, brought to limelight several African legends and budding talents who are making a difference in various fields of endeavour.

These include young entrepreneurs like Ethiopia’s Abai Schulze and legends like the late Chinua Achebe.

“Africa has always had rich stories, cultures and innovations. We have never lacked talents, what we lacked were platforms to amplify them in a reverend and authentic manner,” she stated, adding that CNN African Voices, had “played its part by sport-lighting a continent that has a lot to offer to the world, and undoubtedly accelerating its global influence”.

“At Globacom, we play our part by providing world class telecommunication services, and supporting platforms that promote growth and success. And to this end, I look forward to many more years of mutually beneficial partnership with CNN”, she concluded.

Also speaking at the cocktail, Account Director, CNN International Commercial, Zara Driss, said, “we are proud to work with such a committed, long-standing sponsor of a show that shares our passion about the diverse culture of Africa. Together with Globacom, we look forward to this new era of African Voices and its  television and digital programming that will raise the profile of the continent’s change makers amongst international audience”.

In her own remarks, the Supervising Producer of African Voices, Jenni Watts, said, “it is humbling to come to Africa to see the impact of the stories and have time to reflect,” adding that she was a huge fan of Chimanmanda Adiche who is well loved by Mrs Michelle Obama.

Among those who attended the event were juju music maestro, King Sunny Ade, and Orente singer, Adekunle, Gold who entertained guests.

Globacom started sponsoring  African Voices nine years ago, and has over the years contributed to changing the narrative in the world information order by allowing Africans to tell their own stories to the world without misrepresentations.
