  • WEF: the prodigal and his N4b are separated

The Goodluck Jonathan administration is peopled by half-empty grandiloquent popinjays. That is Hardball’s well-considered opinion and you could quote that freely. Now let us proceed to uphold our proposition. First the leading lights of the regime are people who have sojourned abroad. They were shipped home with the high expectation that they were some kind of technocrats who had answers to at least some, if not all the developmental pains bedeviling a fledgling country like Nigeria. But as it has turned out, or as it has been revealed, they really don’t grasp it. In fact they are miles away from the reality of Nigeria’s situation.

Sometimes Hardball cannot help but have sympathy for them. They really cannot help themselves. They have their heads permanently screwed to an angle so that they are forever looking up towards the ceiling or the West if you prefer; (if only they are looking up to heaven). In other words, they are stiff-necked if you catch Hardball’s drift. They fancy themselves belonging to some rarefied Western clubs. They are jet-set – meaning that they are more airborne than on Nigeria’s humble roads. They love the luxury hotels of New York and Washington and London more than the seedy terra-firma of Abuja and Lagos. They cherish the company of some white-skin top-notch who humour them with some sexed-up ratings; some wangled ‘global’ awards and who convince them that they are the miracles out of Africa.

But they are only adept at the current global economic slangs and jargons. At every turn they speak their hocus-pocus with so much relish and bravura. When we muster enough courage to ask questions or point at blinding incongruities littering our landscape, they browbeat us with more economic arcana and will only stop short at calling us illiterate. Such is our predicament in the last decade or so that we have had a quake of a motion yet we remain in situ.

They know they have failed us woefully, they can see the house crumbling all around them yet they dig in stubbornly – as stubborn as that snout-mouthed creature often dead to its mucky forays. There is nothing doing but they live in abject denial of glaring facts, concocting fantabulous tales of ‘transformation’. But facts and reality keep haunting us all. For instance, no new jobs are being created; in fact the job space shrinks resulting in deathly scramble for a few dozen openings in our old colonial bureaucracy.

In a country of over 150 million people, not one million can boast of clean, potable water. Cholera still ravages many parts of the country; leprosy rages, diabetes, kidney failure and even polio. All the diseases that have been eradicated in other climes seem to have found solace here. And what does the Ministry of Health do for instance: serial summitry as well at venues far removed from our diseased environments. Public awareness is a major weapon against diseases but not so in Nigeria. Pupils still sit on bare floor to study. All basic things of life elude us.

Yet we would burn N4 billion in three days hosting ‘the world’ in a locked down ghost city. They gloat about pledges in million dollars as if we are a beggarly nation. It’s eerie isn’t it? In fact it’s so spooky Hardball wagers we must be in a ghost land.

  • Chibok: Jonathan accepts Isreal’s offer to send experts

President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted the offer by Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu to send a team of Israeli counter-terrorism experts to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations for the abducted Chibok girls.

Special Adviser to President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati   in a statement confirmed that Netanyahu made the offer  in a telephone conversation with President Jonathan on Sunday afternoon to convey his country’s sympathy and solidarity with Nigeria.

The President briefed Mr. Netanyahu on actions already being taken by Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies to locate and rescue the girls, saying that Nigeria would be pleased to have Israel’s globally-acknowledged anti-terrorism expertise deployed to support its ongoing operations.

Mr. Netanyahu who according to Abati  expressed Israel’s total condemnation of the mass abductions, said that the team of experts from his country who will soon arrive in Nigeria, will work in collaboration with teams from the United States and Britain who are already in the country and their Nigerian counterparts to intensify the search for the girls.

The Isreali PM  reaffirmed Israel’s willingness to give the government and people of Nigeria all possible support and assistance to overcome terrorism and insecurity.

President Jonathan said  he was very optimistic that with the entire international community deploying its considerable military and intelligence-gathering skills and assets in support of Nigeria’s efforts to find and rescue the abducted Chibok girls, success will soon be achieved.

  • How Nigeria rejected help for weeks, by US, UK

How Nigeria rejected help for weeks, by US, UK

Initial efforts by the international community to assist Nigeria in searching for the over 200 schoolgirls  abducted last month in Borno State were rebuffed by the federal government, according to reports yesterday.

The British Foreign Office said the United Kingdom offered help soon after  the mass abduction, while the U.S. said its embassy and staff agencies offered help “from day one” of the crisis, according to Secretary of State John Kerry.

It was only last week, three weeks  after the Boko Haram raid of the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, that President Goodluck Jonathan accepted the offers, one in a series of missteps that have led to growing international outrage against the government.

The federal authorities and the military high command were said to be initially uncomfortable with allowing foreigners run the show in the rescue operation.

The U.S., Britain, France and China are in the lead in providing mainly technical assistance in locating the girls.

However, President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that up to 20 countries and international agencies have indicated interest in searching for the girls.

These according to him include Spain, Israel, several African countries, particularly neighbouring Chad, Cameroun, Niger Republic and Benin Republic as well as the International Criminal Police Organisation (Inerpol).

The President spoke at Oporoza in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State,  where he had gone to  perform the groundbreaking  of the NIMASA Shipyard and Dockyard and the Nigeria Maritime University in Okerenkoko.

“I’ve just had a communication with the president of Interpol (and) they are ready to key in with the Nigerian government to search the whole world. Wherever these girls are, we must get them,” he said.

He warned crime gangs and others  who might be interested in trading in the girls to keep  off, insisting that there would be no hiding place for whoever got involved in the heinous crime.

The Boko Haram leader, Ahmed Shekau, had threatened in a video message last week to sell off the girls.

Jonathan added: “Luckily, the international community is angry with the whole thing. We have support from other countries and we promise the world that we will get these girls out.

“I am very pleased with the support from the US, UK, China, France, Israel, Spain and others and the cooperation we are getting from  neighbouring countries: Cameroon, Niger, Chad, Benin, Central Africa Republic and North African countries.

“We are totally committed; we will make sure that we get the girls out wherever they keep them.”

The president reaffirmed his conviction that the girls are still in Nigeria possibly in Simbisa forest in Borno State.

He said:”The story that they (Boko Haram) have sold them (the girls) is not true. You cannot buy any of those girls because where you are in the world, no sane person will attempt to go and keep these girls.”

He appealed to Nigerians to give peace a chance with a view to ensuring widespread development in the county.

He said, “Everybody wants development, but you cannot get it in a circumstance where there is crisis.

“The last time I visited here (Gbaramatu) to see the people after the troubles before Amnesty, nobody smiled. I could not smile and these same people I have come to see now could smile.

“Today, we have come to open a Marine University and everyone is smiling and happy. Without peace, the atmosphere would not have supported this. Nobody would have thought of this. So I thank the Gbaramatu people, those of a Niger Delta for embracing peace to create the enabling environment.”

Government, according to him, is  impressed with the level of peace in the Niger Delta region, although he acknowledged  that  criminal elements still abound in the area.

Speaking on the Maritime University and NIMASA shipyard and dockyard projects, the president revealed that it is part of an overall plan to create employment and reduce the pool of jobless youths available for crime in the area.

He said government’s target is to make   the maritime sector contribute between 30 and 40percent of the nation’s GDP.

In deference to the mood of the nation caused by the abduction of the Chibok girls, the President cancelled the traditional dancing and wrestling (ogele) which were part of the programme to welcome him to the state.

Transport Minister Idris Umar said, on the occasion, that the projects underscored government’s commitment to the development of the maritime sector.

He said they are legacies, not only to Nigeria, but  the West Africa subcontinent in line with the transformation agenda of President Jonathan.

Also speaking, the Director General of NIMASA, Ziakede Akpobolokemi said the university would help achieve one of its targets to build in-country capacity for composite manpower development in the sector.

The ceremony was attended by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and his Anambra State counterpart, Willie Obiano, Senator  James Manager, members of House of Representatives, Hon Daniel Reyenieju and Ndudi Elumelu, traditional rulers and other community leaders in the region.

  • Jonathan, Buhari, Tinubu, Amosun, others extol Awujale at 80

Jonathan, Buhari, Tinubu, Amosun, others extol Awujale at 80

President Goodluck Jonathan, former Head of State, General  Mohammadu Buhari (Rtd); National Leader of the All Progressive Congress(APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun and hundreds of eminent Nigerians yesterday extolled the virtues of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who clocked 80.

They joined others from all walks of life to grace the grand finale of the week-long birthday celebration of Oba Adetona at the ancient town of Ijebu-Ode.

Jonathan and others described him as a “big masquerade”, “lucky monarch,” a “colossus,” “courageous and honest person.”

Oba Adetona, who clocked 80 in May, has been on the throne of his forebears for over 50 years and remains one of the longest- reigning monarchs in Nigeria.

Jonathan, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, General Oladeinde Arogbofa (rtd), extolled Awujale, saying he has contributed immensely to the development of Nigeria and urged him to persevere in his good deeds.

The President described the monarch as a “big masquerade” whose wealth of experience had helped the country in no small measure.

According to him: “Our revered father, you should continue to do those things that you have been doing so well.

“I appreciate the good people of Ijebuland for working closely with Awujale. The  the calibre of people present here today is an indication that the people love our monarch.

“His reign of 54 years now has made him to be so loved. Baba, continue to play the fatherly leadership role.”

Buhari eulogised Adetona for his forthrightness at all times and described him as a lucky monarch who had seen the nation’s trying political processes.

To Tinubu, the paramount ruler is an “honest and courageous person.”

Amosun described Adetona as a “colossus and a peacemaker,” and ascribed some of the achievements recorded by his administration in the last 35 months to the ruler’s support.

The governor named the first flyover in the town after the royal father to immortalise him.

Amosun said: “You are an experienced Oba and we are honouring you today, which marks your 80th birthday with the naming of the first flyover bridge in the town after your name.”

The monarch, while appreciating his guests, expressed gratitude to his creator for making him to join the league of octogenarians despite his early challenges in life.

Adetona said: “The beginning was a bit rough, but I thank Almighty Allah that today we are rejoicing.

“I am grateful to Allah for blessing all my activities. I promised that I will continue to stand on the side of truth.”

Others in attendance were former governors of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel; former Governor of Oyo State, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo and the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi  Adesina.

Other dignitaries included President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; the Chairman, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Otunba Subomi Balogun and the Chairman, Globacom Plc., Chief Mike Adenuga.

  • God, why punish us for Jonathan’s failure?

God, why punish us for Jonathan’s failure?

Dear GOD, our nation is on the brink of collapse. We are in deep crisis and national turmoil. It is written, when a nation is going through such chaos, it is because GOD is angry with the leader(s). If therefore, President “Goodluck” Jonathan and co. have offended you, why are you punishing us, the innocent citizens?

This is not blasphemy nor a sacrilege; it is the truth. It is obvious that you are behind all these calamities. Nigeria used to be your anointed but not anymore. We have assaulted your grace beyond redemption and the culprit is our President; the man you imposed on us or the man we enthroned by force. Either way, the man is an error. But who are we to blame you, the unquestionable GOD? With this piece, I am taking a risk. I am risking my relationship with you but I am asking you to show some understanding and have mercy on me for my frankness.

Nothing happens without your knowledge, we have been told several times by our catechists. How come that Jonathan found himself in power when you knew he would make us poorer? How come you allowed Jonathan to rule our nation when you knew we would end up in ruins? Why did you give us a leader that would be dancing Azonto when our girls are still marooned in unknown grotto? Why did you allow the emergence of a leader during whose reign death has become cheaper than it was before? Why did you not prevent the enthronement of a man that does not believe that stealing is corruption?  Why did you favour a man to power that will not know the whereabouts of the citizens he is meant to protect? Why did you give us a President that would confess his helplessness in helping grieving parents to retrieve their abducted daughters? Why did you put in power a man that will not accept responsibility for the missing girls and have the courage to resign? Why do we have a President that talked as if those who abducted the girls were from outer space? What kind of President would be dancing Skelewu and Kukere when the newspapers are daily awash with news of people being blasted or roasted by Boko Haram? Why did you give us a man that likes the glamour of his position but lacks the rigour for the position.

The President insinuated that there is the possibility that the girls have been taken out of the country. GOD, now you know why I keep asking you for protection for me and my household. It is because, like the Chibok girls, we are mere statistics to my state. You asked us to call on you in times of trouble, GOD, there can be no better time to cry out loud for help; we need help in this country. Can you imagine over 200 girls being taken out of our country without our security agencies knowing how it happened. On behalf of other citizens of this nation, I am crying to you once again that we are in serious trouble with this man in the saddle. In the bible, we read about Kings who protected their citizens at the risk of their own lives. Some of the Kings even went to war against their attackers to show how much they loved their subjects. But this our own President is not going to any battle nor is he protecting those who went to the battle and those who are the objects of the battle. Instead, he is busy dancing Skelewu and Azonto at political rallies asking for a second term when his first term is full of the blood of the innocent. Why should a man who cannot identify, unmask, confront and subdue Boko Haram and their sponsors for the past two years expect us to return him to power? It is an egregious insult and display of moral deficit that the President is asking the people of this country to return him to power when there is evidence that GOD Himself is angry with his government.

GOD, please take a good look at our nation and see if there is any sign of governance. The whole nation looks so dry and vacant. All you will see is a nation soaked in vanity with men running helter skelter in search of power to boost their aura. You will see a nation that is rebasing and yet declining. We are growing but into a monster that people scorn and scoff.  You will see a people that have been stripped of their existential value by their own government. GOD, take a look at our nation, You will see government but you can’t see governance. The men in power are too lazy to ponder. In other countries you have visited, I am sure you would have seen how happy their people were. I am telling you the truth dear GOD that our people are not happy. We are tired of this man in Purdah.  He looks gentle and harmless but I can tell you that these are no virtues. This is deception writ large. When a man’s history to the top is replete with a measure of “greedluck”, there is a mystery that we need to unlock.  GOD, please take a good look at our nation and see the extent of venality in our land. Our land is seriously contaminated. Death and evil walk brazenly on the streets playing hide and seek at whim I am told of a young man who made first class in History from one of our first generation universities, but failed to find a job eight years after his graduation. He later died of renal problem.

GOD, why are the people being punished for the failure of their leader(s)? Why is it that the leaders are fumbling and the citizens are dying? The Nyanya victims; the abducted Chibok girls; the daily victims of Boko Haram; the millions of jobless graduates, the innocent victims of ethnic conflicts, the languishing pensioners, the physically and mentally sick people lacking medical attention and the millions of citizens that are hungry and suffering in silence.

It is sad that our nation no longer possesses the positives of the past that brought us fame and name. The horrendous reports people read everyday about Nigeria show-case our talents in the evil industry. There is no more pride in honesty. People now scramble for a share of the national cake not minding the fraud involved in obtaining the cake. We hear of billions of naira being voted for projects during FEC meetings but these billions and projects have become bottomless pits for the nation. Those who smile to the banks are oblivious of those who groan to the graves. The state has lost its relevance as citizens troop to the church for what the state fails to give them: security, hope, comfort, peace, prosperity and miracles. The state itself needs miracle. It is under threat and under siege by bandits of wealth. Our nation is bleeding non-stop.

These days, our President is always seen in the company of “powerful” men of GOD. If he is not visiting them in their churches, they are visiting him in his Villa.  At least, those are the people we see in the day. Why should I gossip about those who visit our President in the night? Night visitors at the Villa are on the “exclusive list” and any gossip about them is a threat to “national security”. But what is responsible for these visitations? Is our President asking for their prayers and blessings for second term or for Boko Haram? Dear GOD, this is a rhetorical question. Don’t bother to answer me because you already know why. He even went as far as visiting the Pope at the Vatican with “Mama Peace” who recently threatened to cause commotion in Borno State if the girls were not returned. His photographs with the Pope were celebrated with ‘Azontos’ funfare in major newspapers.

But before he could transfer the Papal anointing to Ayo Fayose in Ado, my good friend, Kayode Fayemi, the governor of Ekiti  State, a very calculating and pro-active character, was also at the Vatican to receive his own Papal blessing ‘live and direct’. The photographs were also in major newspapers.  This is to let you know that people really want to neutralize all his moves. If he had told the Pope sweet things about his government, I am sure Fayemi would have set the records straight just as I am doing in this my angry letter to you. We wont allow anybody to collect cheap divine blessings for second term.

GOD, if you are wondering if this is a letter or a prayer request, I will tell you it is everything rolled into one. It is a letter, a prayer, lamentation, explanation, supplication and interdiction. All I want is for you to consider all that I have written in this letter when that man prays to you for a second term. Please don’t answer him. He is not serious.

Jonathan congratulates Zuma over electoral victory

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday congratulated President Jacob Zuma and his party, the African National Congress (ANC) on their victory in the South African general elections.

He welcomed the ANC’s victory, which was achieved with over 60 per cent of the votes cast in the election to the South African Parliament and provincial legislatures.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President said that the victory was an affirmation of the enduring popularity of President Zuma and the party of Nelson Mandela, Oliver Thambo and other great heroes of the anti-apartheid movement.

He said it was a reaffirmation of the confidence of the majority of the people of South Africa in the ability of the ANC government to progressively achieve more inclusive national economic development and prosperity.

The statement reads: “President Jonathan and Nigeria felicitate with the people of South Africa on the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections which were the first since the passing away of Dr. Nelson Mandela.

“He believes that the elections and the ANC’s fifth consecutive victory at national polls were a well-deserved tribute to the Madiba, whose contributions to the emergence of a non-racist and truly democratic South Africa remained legendary.

“Jonathan also looked forward to continuing to work with President Zuma and his ANC government to further strengthen the cordial and mutually-beneficial relations between Nigeria and South Africa, especially in the area of bilateral trade and investments.

“The President also trusts that under the continued leadership of the ANC, Nigeria and South Africa will keep on working together with others for the attainment of greater peace, political stability, economic development and progress in all parts of the African continent.”

Jonathan accepts U.S. offer to join girls rescue battle

    Scores ‘feared dead in attack’

    Soyinka seeks rapid action

The world is joining  forces with Nigeria to rescue the school girls abducted by Boko Haram gunmen.

President Goodluck Jonathan accepted yesterday America’s offer to send in men and equipment to join the battle to rescue the girls who were snatched away from their hostels in Chibok, Borno State on April 15.

Besides, the United Nation (UN) warned that no harm must befall the girls.

    Britain said it would help.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Dr. Reuben Abati said Jonathan accepted the offer during a telephone conversation with United States Secretary of State Mr. John Kerry.

Abati issued a statement, which reads: “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Tuesday welcomed and accepted a definite offer of help from the United States of America in the ongoing effort to locate and rescue the girls abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok three weeks ago.”

“The offer from President Barack Obama, which was conveyed to President Jonathan by the United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry, in a telephone conversation which began at 15.30 hours today, includes the deployment of U.S. security personnel and assets to work with their Nigerian counterparts in the search and rescue operation.”

“Mr. Kerry assured President Jonathan that the United States is wholly committed to giving Nigeria all required support and assistance to save the abducted girls and bring the reign of terror unleashed on parts of the country by Boko Haram to an end.”

“Thanking Mr. Kerry for the call and offer of further assistance, President Jonathan told him that Nigeria’s security agencies who were already working at full capacity to find and rescue the abducted girls would appreciate the deployment of American counter-insurgency know-how and expertise in support of their efforts.”

President Jonathan, after speaking with Kerry met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and heads of national security agencies in continuation of the national efforts to find and rescue the girls.

At the meeting, Abati said, the President received updates on the ongoing search-and-rescue effort and approved recommended actions.

    Britain also offered to help.

British Foreign Minister William Hague said: “We are offering practical help.”

Hague spoke with reporters as he arrived for a Council of Europe meeting in Vienna to discuss ways to defuse the situation in Ukraine, where the government is trying to quell an insurrection by pro-Russian activists.

“What has happened here… the actions of Boko Haram to use girls as the spoils of war, the spoils of terrorism, is disgusting. It is immoral,” he said.

He said he did not want to discuss the details of what help Britain was offering.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said she has written President Jonathan to take steps to rescue the 276 (police figure) pupils.

She said failure to protect the girls is a violation of human rights.

She also warned Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau against selling the girls because it would amount to crimes against humanity.

The UN High Commissioner made her position known in a statement in Geneva through her spokesperson, Rupert Colville.

The statement was made available to our correspondent from Geneva against the backdrop of the global search for the abducted girls.

The statement said: “We are deeply concerned about the outrageous claims made in a video believed to be by the leader of Boko Haram in Nigeria yesterday, in which he brazenly says he will sell the abducted schoolgirls “in the market” and “marry them off”, referring to them as “slaves”.

“We condemn the violent abduction of these girls, reportedly at gunpoint from their school in Chibok in Borno State in North-Eastern Nigeria.

“We warn the perpetrators that there is an absolute prohibition against slavery and sexual slavery in international law. These can, under certain circumstances, constitute crimes against humanity. The girls must be immediately returned, unharmed, to their families.”

Along with seven others, she said she had sent a letter to Jonathan on the need to rescue the girls.

The statement added: “The High Commissioner has contacted the President of Nigeria and urged the government to ensure that it spares no effort to ensure the safe return of the girls to their homes and communities.

“In a letter signed by Navi Pillay, along with the Executive Director of UN Women, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, the four African UN women leaders reminded the Nigerian Government of its legal responsibility to ensure that girls and boys have the fundamental rights to education and to be protected from violence, persecution and intimidation.

“As the High Commissioner said during her visit to Nigeria earlier this year, the actions of Boko Haram have grown increasingly monstrous. The group has targeted some people simply because of their religion or professional occupation – and in this case, simply because the girls were enrolled in school.

“We urge the authorities to take all necessary measures, consistent with human rights, to protect their people from these violations and crimes.

“It is particularly important that the local state authorities and the federal government cooperate fully.

“Failure to undertake effective measures that are within the authorities’ means to protect people is a violation of human rights. However, States assisting Nigeria in its counter-terrorism operations should also ensure that they stay within the remits of international law.”

  • Jonathan: military operations’ll continue till girls are rescued

Jonathan: military operations’ll continue till girls are rescued

President Goodluck Jonathan said yesterday that the security and intelligence services would go on with their operation to free the abducted girls.

He spoke while inaugurating the presidential fact-finding committee set up to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the 234 – police said 267 – secondary school girls in Chibok, Borno State.

The committee, he said, is not an administrative or a judicial panel. The fact-finding committee will not interface with the functions exclusively reserved for the state government.

The committee is also not a replacement for the ongoing search and rescue operations by security agencies or for covert intelligence gathering required to assist the operation.

According to the President, setting up of the committee is inevitable to confront the sad circumstances that surrounded the abduction.

He said: “First, let me make it very clear. Luckily, the Minister of Justice is here, that this committee is neither a judicial committee nor an administrative committee to look into the affairs of this incident.

“You will agree with me that this is not a committee that brings joy to me and indeed our country men and women. However, it is a necessary step which government must take to confront the sad circumstances surrounding the abduction of female students, our daughters in Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok.

“Fellow country men and women, this is a trying moment for our country and it is reassuring that we have the empathy and cooperation of friendly countries from across the world at this time.

“I am appreciative of the fact that this sad incident has attracted global outrage. This is a clear testimony to the fact that humanity can come together and stand as one against evil, no matter how it is presented.

“This is the time when we must dwell together beyond all political, religious or regional divide against our common enemy. We must remain vigilant and be ready to assist security agencies and authorities at all time.

“We must keep supporting the families whom for seeking education for their daughters are undergoing untold pains at this moment. Let me assure the families and our dear daughters that in conjunction with international community that government will do everything possible to get our girls back.

“We share your pain and suffering and are with you in prayers. We urge you to cooperate with the investigations in spite of your understandably difficult situation. We employ you to remain strong.”

The President also reassured all Nigerians and guests including delegates to the World Economic Forum, of a safe and conducive atmosphere.

Committee Chairman Brig.-General Ibrahim A. Sabo advised Jonathan not to be stampeded into taking any action capable of further endangering the lives of the abducted girls.

He said: “We are not unmindful of the tantrums  and invectives on your person and our committee by ignorant people. Such people are neither soundly patriotic nor intelligently selfish, they dwell on the theory of the aircraft and marriage.”

    The committee is to .liaise with the Borno State Government and establish the circumstances leading to the School remaining open for boarding students when other schools were closed;

.with relevant authorities and the parents of the missing girls to establish the actual number and identities of the girls abducted; and

.interface with the security services and Borno State Government to ascertain how many of the missing girls have returned”.

The committee is to mobilise the surrounding communities and the general public on citizen support for a rescue strategy and operation.” It was also articulate a framework for a multi-stakeholder action for the rescue of the missing girls.

The committee is also expected to advise the government on any matter incidental to the terms of reference.

The Committee gave reason for the absence of the three Borno State representatives at yesterday’s inauguration.

A statement by the spokesman for the committee, Mr. Kingsley Osadolor, reads: “The Committee took cognisance of the absence of the three representatives of Borno State Government during the committee’s inauguration at State House, Abuja.

“The committee contacted the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, who explained that he had been away, but promised to send the nominated representatives to the next plenary of the Presidential Committee.

“The Committee has broken into clusters of workgroups to immediately gather and sift facts already in the public domain, and within the knowledge of appropriate agencies, with a view to ascertaining gaps, which will assist the Committee in the next stages of its fact-finding mission.”

Kidnapped girls highlight Nigeria’s many security challenges

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls, a day after President Goodluck Jonathan ordered a three day shutdown of the capital Abuja during the World Economic Conference.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau on Monday (05.05.2014) claimed the Islamist militant group was behind the abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls from northeastern Nigeria. “I am the one that abducted them,” the most wanted man in Nigeria said as part of a recorded message released to numerous media organisations. Shekau also warned that more attacks “will follow soon.”

“I will sell them in the marketplace,” Shekau said in a video recording. The teenage girls were abducted on April 14 from a boarding school in the rural town of Chibok, near Borno state in northern Nigeria. According to an intermediary, two of the girls have died of snakebite and about 20 of them are ill. He was also quoted by AFP as saying that Christians among the girls have been forced to convert to Islam.

Mustapha Gana, a father of one of the girls and a retired military officer told DW, parents and a local vigilante group had attempted a search for the girls. “It was not possible for us to get them because the insurgents are well armed,” Gana said adding that they were willing to accompany the military into the bush. “We the parents are ready to go along with them even if we would be killed.”

    Girls’ protest leader arrested

Nigerian police on Monday detained Naomi Mutu, the woman behind the mass demonstrations dubbed “Bring Back Our Girls.” Human rights activists told dpa news agency Naomi had been arrested in Chibok. The arrest was reportedly ordered by First Lady Patience Jonathan, though as the president’s wife she does not have a constitutional right to give such orders. Her office later denied there were any arrests.

President Jonathan’s government is increasingly facing criticisms for failing to free the girls. Protests in major Nigerian cities have been held to show frustration with the country’s security services. Nigeria’s police recently admitted more than 300 girls were abducted. Of that number, 276 remain in captivity and 53 were able to escape from their abductors.

    Abuja shut down

In the face of the security threat, President Jonathan has ordered a complete lock down of the capital Abuja. However, he argued the measure was meant to decongest the city as it plays host to the World Economic Forum which begins on Wednesday (07.05.2014).

“We plead with Nigerians living in Abuja to understand with government because we believe that instead of keeping you for five six hours and you will not get to your destination better stay back at home,” Jonathan said. However, Tam Breme, a resident of Abuja told DW correspondent Ben Shemang, Jonathan’s move was a result of increasing security challenges. “If Abuja is being shut down for 3 days, I think the government is trying to consider reasonable period of time to look into the issue of protest.” Despite the rising number of attacks in Abuja, the President told the nation in a televised “media chat” he believes the country is winning the war against Boko Haram Islamists. More than 1,500 people have been killed as a result of the insurgency this year alone.
