  • Group seeks promotion of Igbo language

Worried by the seeming disappearance of Igbo language among the youths, a non-governmental group, the Pinacle Organisation, led by Mrs. Charity Edochie Okoli, has initiated a two-day event to revitalise the dying culture. Tagged Igbo Asoka (Igbo is sweet), will hold on September 7 at Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State capital.

The organisers said the event will feature talk shops, traditional dances, masquerade displays, beauty pageants, and a gala nite with participants turning out in Igbo traditional attires.

Okoli said: “Globalisation has dealt a heavy blow on our culture. Events around us show that our youth are imbibing western culture faster than our indigenous culture and traditional values. They are ashamed to speak our unique dialect. To stem this negative tide and to halt the decline in Igbo language especially amongst our youths, Pinnacle Organisation has come up with this programme,” she added.

According to her, the aim of the event is among others to halt the decline of Igbo language amongst youth, revitalise cultural values and correct the impression that speaking the Igbo language reduces one’s status in the society. She stressed that instead, it reinforces one’s cultural identity. “We want to help restore the usual attributes of a typical Igbo man, such as wisdom, craftsmanship, integrity, zeal, determination, focus, boldness and industry. These should be etched in the minds of our youths,” she said.

    Continuing, she said:

“We hope the event will facilitate the bonding of Igbo nation since all the Igbo states will be in attendance, and there will be a display of our rich cultural heritage; in other words, to express the ‘Igboness’ of our culture. The aim is to reawaken the traditional consciousness in our youth and getting them well informed. Igbo Asoka is a multi-million naira project that will see many corporate organisations working and pulling their resources together to make it a huge success.”

  • Group makes case for women

The African Women Entrepreneurship Programme (AWEP), a non-governmental organisation has called on government and financial institutions to assist them with funds to enable them to enhance economic growth as well as boost economic empowerment in the countr.

The group also disclosed its intention to train 500 women on computer application by the end of this year.

The International President of AWEP, Mrs. Sylvia Banda disclosed this in Abuja during the launch of the Nigerian chapter of AWEP.

Banda, who appealed to government to support women and reduce the challenges women face in business, urged banks to ensure that the interest rate they plan has human face because three quarter of the world economy is generated by women.

Affirming Hilary Clinton’s statement, Mrs. Banda said: “Women can be the rock on which a freer, safer, more prosperous Africa is built. They just need the opportunity.

“The African Women’s Entrepreneurship Programme (AWEP) is an outreach, education and engagement initiative that aims to empower African women entrepreneurs to become voices of change in their communities.”

Also speaking, the President of AWEP Nigeria chapter, Mrs. Yemisi Iranloye, who also called for the empowerment of women, explained that in the world today, the role of women is impeded due to lack of empowerment, insisting that for their role to be felt, they must be empowered economically.

She said: “World Bank asserted that women empowerment will enhance productivity and development outcome and in Nigeria, women are the backbone of communities. Nigerian women believe that Nigeria will grow if they are part of the growth process.”

Still speaking on the significance of women, Mrs. Iranloye said “no nation is likely to experience economic growth if the women are not given the enabling environment. Giving women greater earning power will boost children’s health.

Speaking about AWEP’s programme for this year, she said: “We have three programmes for the year. They will take place in the North and South. In the North, we shall be focusing on two products which are moringa and yellow pepper. We want to see how we can standardise moringa and become a leading exporter of it. In the South, we will explore the species of banana and seafood.

“The last programme for 2013 is on funding. We will see how we can collaborate with the World Bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in order for the women to have funding opportunities. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we will have big entrepreneurs doing massive export.”

She expressed hope that the funding opportunity will create enabling environment for women to do business in the country. That, in turn, will help them to cater for their children, community and contribute to the growth of the national economy.

She further explained that AWEP has embarked on training 500 of its women by the end of 2013.

“We have done a lot of training; training on food processing, on export. We have taken the women to NACO where export is being done and we have also partnered with Intel International to start teaching women how to do their accounting through the use of computer and even how to use Facebook.

“We want to train them on how to use the power of data to promote their business internationally and we just finished training 50 women on data processing and the 50 women will, in turn, train 10 women each.

“So, by the end of 2013, we will have 500 women trained on how to use data to promote their businesses internationally.”

Reacting to the demands of the women, the Special Adviser to the President on Gender, Mrs. Asmau Abdulkadir who described economic empowerment as second to the air we breathe assured women that the issue of funding will be addressed.

  • Group Urges EFCC to Probe Ebonyi’s N40billion debt

A group, Concerned Citizens of Ebonyi State, has raised the alarm over the huge debt problem facing the state.

It called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately probe the administrators of the states, resources.

The president of the group, Mr. Elechi Ikeburu, in a statement stressed that the situation is more alarming because there are no tangible completed infrastructural development projects to march the huge debt profile.

“It is unthinkable that Ebonyi State will have such huge debt without corresponding evidence of completed projects carried out in the state,” the statement stated.

Ebonyi State led the list of the states in the country that failed the domestic debt sustainability analysis undertaken by the Debt Management Office (DMO).

According to DMO, Ebonyi recorded a negative score of 272 per cent, representing her domestic debt stock of N40.239 billion relative to her IGR of N14.778 billion.

It would be recalled a lawmaker from Ebonyi State representing Ezza North/West Constituency, Enyi C. Enyi, recently opposed a motion for a vote of confidence for the Governor and his Deputy, citing the numerous uncompleted projects that litter the state.

Enyi said: “Most of the projects put in place by the present administration are yet to be completed. The ongoing water schemes are yet to be completed, so we are yet to assess its impact on the people of the state.

“It is clear that the road leading to the State House of Assembly is in shambles. Therefore, it is premature at this point for the state house of assembly to pass a vote of confidence on Governor Martin Elechi and his deputy.”

  • Ige’s murder: Group petitions NASS, IGP, AGF for fresh probe

Ige’s murder: Group petitions NASS, IGP, AGF for fresh probe

Barely 12 years after the assassination of a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Bola Ige, a new group has demanded a fresh, independent probe into the incident

The Leadership Rescue Initiative is also seeking a revisit of the death of a former Minister of Internal Affairs, Chief S.M. Afolabi and ex- National Vice-Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief Harry Marshal.

It made the demand in a petition to the President of the Senate, Chief David Mark, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) and the Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji M.D. Abubakar.

In the petition, signed by its chairman, Mr. Richard Odusanya, the group admitted in writing to have been privy to some clues to the murder of Ige and the death of Afolabi.

The petition indicated that the chairman of the group ran errands for senior government officials between 1999 and 2003.

It said while the murder of Ige and Marshal had similar patterns, the government ought to look into the possibility that Afolabi may have been poisoned.

The petitioners urged “transparent revisit of the following national leadership abuse/calamities”, promising to be readily available to provide unassailable facts to assist in sincere and conclusive state investigations; viz: (a) corrupt enrichment by proxy (b) high-profile assassinations and (c) criminal imposition of personal will on the nation.”

“Chief Bola Ige of blessed memory had uncompromising resolve to work to sustain his party’s (AD) control of the Southwest.

“It must be emphasised that the charade and drama of the past are national disgrace, such as when the then Inspector-General Sunday Ehindero paraded people who disgraced him in attempt to label them Ige killers.

“Late Chief Harry Marshal was a notable opposition ANPP leader…but he died.

“We need to know as a nation whether Chief SM Afolabi was poisoned in detention or he died of natural cause. A former minister of Internal Affairs, he was detained over a US$7million National ID Card bribe. The government detained everybody but the actual culprit.”

Also, the group asked the government to look into how $6million of the $180million Halliburton scandal was shared by some top officials in the presidency during the Obasanjo administration.

It claimed that its demand followed the alleged revelation by a suspect that he “admitted to the police that he collected only $6million but refused to implicate” anybody.

The petition added: “Without prejudice to any relevant national institution that may wish to act by virtue of constitutional provisions or responsibilities, we humbly and fervently pray that Your Excellency graciously oblige the setting up of an Ad Hoc Committee to scrutinise these issues exhaustively in the interest of the nation.”

  • Group: Jonathan can run

Ahead 2014 Presidential poll, Izon Ikemi, the grassroots of the Ijaw nation made up of Nigerian citizens of Ijaw extraction, within and beyond the Niger Delta States met in Lagos and deliberated on state of the nation issues especially as it affects the strategic interest of the Ijaw Nation and her sister ethnic nationalities nationwide and unanimously agreed that President Goodluck Jonathan can contest the forthcoming presidential election.

In a statement signed by its President, Mr. Tony Uranta, the group reiterates President Jonathan’s right to contest for a second term in office as guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, should he desire to exercise that constitutional rights.

The group urges the Federal Government to critically look into the claims of marginalisation by some ethnic nationalities, reaffirming support for calls for the creation of an additional state in the South East to correct the glaring imbalance that currently exists vis-à-vis the other geopolitical zones.

It urges Jonathan to expedite the jettisoning of all deadweight in his cabinet and other FGN MDAs, that are not serving the common good of Nigerians efficiently, transparently, accountably and patriotically.

To realise these objectives, the group said it will immediately begin extensive consultations with all other Nigerian and foreign stakeholders in the Nigeria Project, including all other ethnic nationalities such as the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, the Afenifere, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, the Arewa Consultative Forum, the Middle Belt Union, the Urhobo Progressive Union, the Ijaw National Congress, the MOSOP, distinguished Nigerians such as elder statesmen, captains of industry, key public functionaries, and our brethren in the Diaspora], plus, leaders of faith based organisations, multinational organisations, transnational bodies, and the diplomatic corps.

‘Pillars ‘ll qualify for group stage of CAF CL’

Baba Ganaru, Head Coach of Kano Pillars FC, has said that his team would qualify for the group stage of the ongoing CAF Champions League, following their brilliant start.

Ganaru told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos, that the 5-1 victory over Olympique Real de Bangui showed that the team was poised to go places.

NAN reports that Kano Pillars had defeated their Central Africa Republic opponents 5-1 in the first leg of the 2013 Orange CAF Champions League in Kano.

“I am very optimistic that we are going to qualify for the group stage of the competition. We started on a brilliant note by beating them 5-1 and it is a good way to start the qualifying stages,” Ganaru said.

The coach told NAN that the team would not get carried away with the result from the first leg, but would work harder to secure the ticket for the group stage.

“Our main goal is to clinch the ticket for the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League and we won’t relent until we achieve our objective. We are already preparing for the return leg match and it will be better than the first leg,” he said.

Ganiyu commended his players for the hard work they had put into the encounter and their adherence to the tactical plan for the match.

“The players played according to my instructions; and if they continue like this, they will go far in the competition,” he said.

NAN reports that the return leg would be played in Bangui on Feb. 28. Coach says players for West African Table Tennis tourney will perform

Nasiru Bello, Head Coach, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), said on Wednesday that he was hopeful that the Nigerian team to the West African Cadet Table Tennis Championships would not disappoint.

The Nigerian team comprising nine players will depart Lagos for Cote d’Ivoire today by road for the championships, holding between Feb. 21 and Feb. 24.

Bello told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that most of the players were selected because of their exceptional performance at the recent National Schools Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.

“Majority of the players were discovered from the school sports festival in Port Harcourt and there is no better way to test them than exposing them to international tournaments,” he said.

Bello said the exposure would give them the needed experience to develop. He said the nine players had been training for a month to prepare them for the regional championships.

“I made sure that the players started preparation immediately after the school sports festival and with what I have seen, they will not disappoint. They may not be exceptionally good now, but with time and

experience, they will improve,’’ he said.

Bello named the players for the U-18 male category as Jide Omotayo and Kehinde Awobajo.

For the male U-15 category is Michael Obayomi, while Ahmed Osibanjo and Martins Abass will feature in the male U-13. In the female U-15 are Ifiok Udoh and Mary Mbah, while Tosin Oribamise and Blessing Eniola will feature in the U-13.

The officials are Segun Oguntade, who is the Chef de Mission, while Nasiru Bello and Ajayi Olubode are coach and assistant coach, respectively.

  • Group donates bus to Down Syndrome foundation

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the West African Ventures Group (WAV), an integrated oil service company, has donated a brand new 18-seater bus to the Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria.

Making the presentation at the foundation’s office in Lagos, Mrs. Eno Agada, who represented the company’s president, stated that the gesture was part of WAV’s effort at giving back to the society and putting smiles on the faces of the needy.

On the choice of the foundation as a beneficiary, Eno said the foundation was found to be in dire need and the WAV Group felt honoured to meet such need.

She said: “Their fliers got to us, and we visited the premises and based on our findings, we presented a report to the president who immediately took decision that the company should donate a brand new bus to the foundation.”

Receiving the key of the bus, the National President of the foundation, Mrs. Rose Mordi, expressed appreciation for the kind gesture from the company.

Mordi said: “I think I’m short of words because I’m totally overwhelmed. I least expected this, but I think it is the best Christmas gift my children have had. This is the first time we are getting this type of gift at this time of the year. Usually, people give us food stuffs or give us some money or school equipment but I think this bus donation beats all.

“It is one of the most important items that we need for the smooth running of the foundation. The children we have here have special needs and part of the programme we have is social integration and we have to move them around because they cannot take public transport, they cannot go out for events on their own and if we don’t have a vehicle to take them out, the programme will not be effective. This gift could not have come at a better time”

She explained that the foundation takes care of Down syndrome in children and some adults that is caused by a genetic disorder resulting from the addition of an extra chromosome in a zygote, which according to her, predisposes them to mental retardation and a few other health issues.

“The only way to take care of them is to carry out early medical intervention, early educational intervention plus vocational training and early social integration. And if these three programmes are effectively carried out, these children can live at least a semi independent life,” she added.

Mordi called on the government and private organisations to help the foundation put in place structures that would help provide early intervention for the affected children. “We call on the Federal and state governments as well as corporate organisations to partner with us. In advanced countries, the basic structures for such organisations are provided by the government but unfortunately there is no such thing in Nigeria.”

  • Group, Keke operators petition Elechi

A human rights organisation based in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, Centre for the Prevention of Corruption and Human Rights Abuse Initiative (CPCHRAI) and the leadership of Ebonyi State Keke Multi Purpose Corporative Society have petitioned Governor Martin Elechi and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Sule, over alleged extortion of over N22 million by the Ministry of Works.

CPCHRAI’s National President, Comrade Okosisi Eburu and the Public Relations Officer of the co-operative society, Mr. Aliede Linus, also alleged that the Ministry of Works and Transport used men of the Ebonyi State command to harass, brutalise, intimidate and arrest more than 15 members of the society.

The petition read: “Before now, we had Keke Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria and Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria.

“Before they were merged, we were asked to pay a minimum of N26, 000 each for registration which we paid.

“Just recently, the Ministry of Works came up with a policy that every Keke operator in the state must change the paint of the Keke to the state colour.

“We had no problem with the decision. Regrettably, we were asked to pay N2, 000 for the painting, N1, 500 for workmanship and N2, 000 registration, totalling N5, 500 each.

“When some of our members decided to paint their Keke with the ministry contractor, we realised that the quality of the paint is so bad and we had to make a formal complaint to the commissioner who insisted that the ministry must handle the painting”.

They urged the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to investigate the matter.

Efforts to get the Ebonyi Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sylvester Igbo, proved abortive.
