  • Group lifts the needy

An Ijebu, Ogun State-based philanthropic organisation, Royal Galaxy Klub, has extended its hand of fellowship to the needy in its domain. Last weekend, it reached out to an SOS Children’s Village and a public hospital with electronic gadgets, food items and other household materials worth millions of naira as part of activities marking its 25th year anniversary.

Among items donated by the 20-member organisation include ceiling fans, water dispensers, mattresses, bags of rice, bed-spreads, wall clocks, mosquito nets, refrigerators, television sets, Indomie noodles and other food items. The beneficiaries were inmates of the Save-Our-Soul (SOS) Children’s Village, Owu-Ijebu, Ijebu East Local Government Area and Ijebu-Igbo General Hospital, Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu-North Local Government Area of the state. The managements of the two institutions received the donations on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Speaking on the kind gesture, Royal King Olasubomi Odunsi, who is the group’s chairman, said the choice of the two public institutions was informed by the need to assist those in dire need of support.

He explained that the gesture was part of his organisation’s annual little ways of giving back to the society through donations to various institutions in Ijebu land.

In their separate responses, Mr. Anthony Inusa-Ahmed, who is the director of the Owu-Ijebu SOS Children’s Village, and Dr. Olugbenga Oyefeso, a consultant at the Ijebu-Igbo General Hospital, representing the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Hospital Management Board, expressed delight for the material donations.

Inusa’Ahmed said: “I am amazed seeing so many materials you have donated to our village which will go a long way in ameliorating the suffering of the inmates here. When I assumed office here a year ago, I had thought this village had closed down because of what I met on ground. On the other hand, I felt it was a challenge for me to reach out to people to come to our aid. But since then, a lot of individuals and organisations have been coming here to assist us both financially and material”.

A total of 176 inmates comprising 100 children and 58 youths, were said to be under the care of the village.

Also, Dr. Oyefeso implored other philanthropic bodies in Ijebu land to emulate the kind gesture of Royal Galaxy Klub and assist the hospital to meet its needs, insisting that the government cannot do it all alone.

  • Benue council poll not free, says group

A network of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Benue State, under the aegis of Benue Network of Non-Governmental Organisations (BENGONET), has said last Saturday’s local government election in Benue State was neither free nor fair.

The group said it started working on the election with the State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) and participated as well as sponsored programmes on radio and television stations to educate voters.

It expressed disappointment with the outcome of the election.

The Chairman of the group, Mr Justin Gbagir, addressed reporters yesterday at its head office in Makurdi on the interim report on the elections gathered by over 20 NGOs.

He explained that in many local governments, including Konshisha, Gboko, Buuruku, parts of Makurdi, Gwer West and Gwer East, voters did not get election materials.

The activist confirmed the violence that characterised the exercise.

He said duly accredited members of BENGONET, including himself, were beaten up and sent away for moving close to what he called illegal polling units where massive thumb-printing was going on.

Gbagir averred that in other places, including Tarka Local Government, where the election result announced by the BSIEC was allegedly different from the figures collated at the polling units and collation centres.

The activist said in almost all the local governments visited by accredited observers of the NGOs, election materials, such as ballot boxes and ballot papers, were given to the Presiding Officers (POs) without result sheets.

He said: “In Gwer East, a former Chairman and an Adviser to Governor Suswam were seen snatching ballot boxes to unknown destination. Also, a man, Clement Adzuanongo, was conveniently coordinating ballot snatching in Konshisha into a vehicle with registration number AE167WXE.”

Gbagir said several ballot boxes did not have identification codes.

He added: “This is just an interim report. Reports from other areas are still been awaiting. What we have given you here has been gathered from the majority of the local governments observed. We will compile the entire report and also make it public through the press.”

  • Group condemns Obasanjo

The Southern Mandate, a coalition of socio-political groups in the Southwest, Southsouth and Southeastern geopolitical zones, yesterday condemned ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo for describing President Goodluck Jonathan as a weakling who is incapable of quelling the Boko Haram insurgency.

It said Obasanjo’s “place in history is that of a villain and nothing more.”

Obasanjo had, at the 40th anniversary of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor’s call to ministry at the Word of Life Bible Church in Warri, Delta State, blamed President Jonathan for being indecisive against Boko Haram.

But in a statement in Abuja, signed by five coordinators of the coalition, the group said instead of Obasanjo seeking forgiveness, he took pride in the Odi massacre.

“It is not always every advice of an elder statesman that should be taken seriously. Government must wear a human face and its essence is for the welfare of the citizenry, the protection of lives and property, and maintenance of human dignity.”

  • Group seeks protection for Okonjo-Iweala, Madueke

    …warns oil marketers

The Southern Mandate, a coalition of socio-political groups in the South-West, South-South and South-Eastern geopolitical zones of the country, yesterday warned some indicted oil marketers against alleged plot to harm the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, and her Finance counterpart, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Also, the group urged the aggrieved marketers to stop the persistent propaganda against the two ministers.

It said the alleged threats have taken a frightening dimension and pleaded with security agencies to protect the duo.

The group gave the warning in a statement in Abuja, which was signed by six coordinators of the coalition, against the backdrop of security beef-up for Okonjo- Iweala by the government.

The signatories are Messrs Tito Zuokumor, Victor Akpe, Obi Okoroma, Fadairo Bamidele, and Dr. Odafe Wilson Omene.

The group alleged that plots by some marketers were not only directed at the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, but targeted at President Goodluck Jonathan.

The statement called on the two ministers not to be deterred by the attacks and threats on their persons, but continue to perform their functions to the best of their capabilities and in the interest of the nation.

  • Group builds special school for disabled

THE Kpakpando Foundation has laid the foundation stone for a special tuition- free school for disabled persons in Imo State.

The ceremony, which was performed by the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, according to the President of the Foundation, Senator Osita Izunasor, marked a new era in the effort to give hope to the physically challenged people in the state.

He said that the foundation took up the initiative, following the challenges and discrimination suffered by those living with disabilities in conventional schools.

Izunasor, who announced that the disabled students will be on full scholarship to university level, said that the school will be ready to take off by next academic session.

In his speech shortly after the foundation laying ceremony, an elated Okorocha, challenged those in authority to assist the less privillaged in the society, noting that anyone seeking the people’s mandate should impact their lives positively through service and philanthropy.

He advised Imo electorate to henceforth demand a clean record of achievements of any politician seeking their mandate for elective positions before casting their votes for such a candidate.

Former Senate president, Ken Nnamani, who witnessed the ceremony among other eminent Nigerians, including the Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, urged Okorocha and other well-meaning individuals to see that the school becomes a reality.

The executive Secretary of the foundation, Prince Ezennia Denton Ogbuehi, in an address earlier, said ‘it is our vision that with the establishment of our special school for physically challenged persons, 10,000 physically challenged persons would have received above standard education with requisite skills acquisition by the year 2022.

  • Group seeks end to domestic violence

Group seeks end to domestic violence

A charitable organisation which supports and empowers victims of domestic violence, the Glowing Future, has called for laws to change the cultural perceptions that tolerate or condone spousal abuses.

Its founder, Mary Akangbe, said there was a need to highlight the prevalence of domestic abuse, especially in Africa, where some still believe it is right for a man to hit his wife in some circumstances.

She spoke in Lagos at the launch of her memoir: Gifts – Roses and Bruises. The book documents her journey of love, betrayal, domestic abuse and violence. “I was almost killed,” she said.

Mrs Akangbe, a United Kingdom-based nurse and counselor, said the violence she suffered at home lasted for sometime before she decided “to do something about it,” which included ending the relationship.

Now, she wants to help others repair damages they may have suffered. “Spousal abuse won’t hit you at once. Before you see a scar on a woman, it must have lasted for two years because, at first, a man will not hit a woman where it will show,” she said.

Mrs Akangbe cited a World Health Organisation (WHO) report which says women are largely affected by domestic violence, with only a small proportion directed towards men. It may include emotional or outright physical abuse.

She said: “The questions we ask at Glowing Future are: To whom can women turn to when faced with violence in their relationships? What are the constraints and cultural perceptions and implications of seeking help or actually leaving an abusive partner? What services are available, and are they tailor-made?

“Part of our mission is to provide confidential and structured support for victims, survivors and their families through bi-monthly support group meetings, and to educate and empower communities to embrace a violence-free existence.

“Regardless of whom you are, what you have or have not done, everyone deserves to live a life of peace, free from fear and intimidation especially in a relationship.

“Our vision is to institute violence-free communities and empower people who are in or out of difficult relationships to live a fulfilling life beyond domestic abuse and violence.”

Akangbe said people can support Glowing Future by referring victims of domestic violence to it and encouraging them to speak up, by signing up as a volunteer to offer support, by making donations or sponsoring its counseling events.

  • Election was manipulated, says observer group

The Forum of Independent Election Observers (FIEO) yesterday said Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State was marred by manipulation, falsification and rigging.

Speaking to reporters in Akure, Dr. Gabriel Nwambu of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) alleged: “At Orimolade Grammar School, Okelisa Okeduke, Ogbodu in Ondo West, Unit 012, Area Code 11, two electoral officers (one of them a youth corps member) were seen thumb-printing for the Labour Party (LP) and N50,000 each was found in their possession.”

He went on: “The question is, how did they come about the money in a polling unit?

“In Owo, two LP chieftains were caught and arrested for illegal possession of six AK 47 rifles, which they used to cause mayhem and terrorise voters who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“This explains the low turnout and victory of the LP in Owo, as thousands of voters were disenfranchised.

“In Okitipupa and Idanre, thugs working for the LP snatched ballot boxes and harassed voters and supporters of the opposition parties.

“In Ilaje, a stronghold of the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not conduct election in two wards and its ad-hoc workers never showed up.”

The election observers noted that last Thursday, 15 youths working for the LP were arrested in Akure for thumb- printing and stuffing ballot boxes with thumb-printed ballot papers in an LP chieftain’s home.

They said their reports must be taken seriously to save democracy from collapse.

Other leaders of the FIEO at the press conference included Rose Akhigbe of the Network of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (NCSON), Comrade Sebastine Ekpenyong of the Electoral Rights Monitor (ERM) and Ambassador Iwara Okoi of the Transparency Advocacy Centre (TAC).

  • Group sensitises public on environment

The Green Law Society (GLS), a students’ group at the Faculty of Law of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), has held an awareness programme to sensitise the public on the need to preserve the environment.

The programme was held in the moot court room in the faculty and was well-attended by students, lectures, and lawyers including Barrister Victor Ayeni, who was represented by Mr. Alonge Opeyemi.

An environmental expert, Dr Olakunle Olatunmile, who spoke on Changing the world: A collective responsibility, said the problem of environment was global, emphasising the need for everyone to contribute to the effort to save the environment from degradation.

He said: “Individuals have degraded the environment so much so that if care is not taken, our planet earth may run into more disaster. It therefore places a demand on everyone to save the environment and by that, saving the future generation.”

He further stressed the fact that, all hands must be on deck to reduce desertification, deforestation, bush burning, overgrazing, overharvesting, improper disposal of waste, biodiversity extinction, over-exploitation of natural resources among others.

Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE after the event, the president of the society, Sope Adeyanju, said the mission of the group was to educate people from the campus to the street on need to protect and nurture the environment. A participant, Ezekiel Adeshida, said his personal awareness about the need to protect and nurture the environment has received a boost.

  • Alleged militia training: Akeredolu’s group reports LP to NSA

Alleged militia training: Akeredolu’s group reports LP to NSA

RELYING on intelligence reports, the Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) yesterday claimed it has uncovered a plot by the ruling Labour Party (LP) in Ondo State to attack stalwarts of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state using Israeli-trained militia.

The organisation – the political platform of the ACN standard bearer in the governorship election billed for October 20, Olurotimi Aredolu (SAN), accused Governor Olusegun Mimiko of funding the training in Israel.

In a petition to the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Major Sambo Dasuki (rtd), by its Director-General, Chief Tayo Alasoadura, ACO named NIRTA Limited as the security outfit training the militia.

According to the organisation, no fewer than 50 members of the LP had sharpened their skills in the art of weapon handling and bomb making, all which ACO alleged the ruling party plans to use to manipulate the election on Saturday.

It urged the NSA to direct concerned agencies to swing into action to avert lawlessness, saying the ACN members have been at the receiving end of the terror being perpetrated in the Sunshine State.

The petition reads: “There are clear indications that things may get worse in the days ahead. At present, a group of people from Ondo State are undergoing training in a security company in Israel known as NIRTAL Limited.

“They are believed to be sponsored by Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Ondo State Governor and candidate of the Labour Party in the October 20 governorship election.

“The scope of the training, according to our discovery, includes, offensive, tactical training, shooting AK-47 live ammunitions in a shooting range and in dedicated facility. We are also aware that this special squad has been trained in the act of bomb making.

“According to our findings, about 50 members of the Labour Party have undergone this dastardly training. Many more are said to be there at present.

“The returnees (Israeli-trained militia) are believed to be strategically distributed in different parts of the state ahead of elections. The predictable consequence of this terrorist tutelage is better imagined.”

The ACO traced the ownership of NIRTAL Limited to a highly-experienced Israeli ex-military personnel that specialises in security training.

It said: “We, therefore, appeal to you to direct the appropriate agencies of the state to commence full and fast investigation into this looming threat with a view to averting a major security breach in our state and potentially in the country.”
