    Cleric assassinated during service

    Gunmen yesterday killed the Shepherd-in-charge of a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko Border town in Ipokia Local Government area of Ogun State.

    The suspected assassins stormed the service while the deceased, identified as Yomi Adetula, was delivering his sermon and shot him in the presence of the congregation.

    The incident occurred around 11a.m..

     An Ogun State-based activist lawyer, Bankole Alani, shared the tragic incident on his Facebook page.

    However, other sources said a six-man gang armed with AK-47 rifles and disguised in the church’s garments, had invaded the Hebrew Celestial Church at the Odo Eran, the Old Garage Road and fired a gale of bullets on the deceased cleric.

    Gunmen believed to be kidnappers have allegedly abducted five persons at Odo Eku camp in Odo-Eku community, Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State

    The incident happened on Wednesday. The hoodlums were said to have stormed the community shooting sporadically, grabbed the persons and moved them to an unknown location.

    Spokesperson of the state Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the development, adding: “Immediate deployment has long taken place; the Police, alongside the vigilante, are on a rescue mission”.

    She added: “The Kwara Police Command is aware of an incident that occurred at about 0115hours of 15/01/25 at the Odu-Eku Camp in Odueku Community of the Isin LGA of Kwara State; where 5 persons were kidnapped. Two males and three females have been moved to an unknown location.

    “Immediate deployment has long taken place; the Police, alongside the Vigilante, are on a rescue mission.”

    JUST IN: Gunmen kill final year student of Akwa Poly

    A Higher National Diploma (HND2) student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, identified simply as Prince, has been shot dead by gunmen suspected to be cultists.

    The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, around 1 a.m., along Abuja Street in Ikot Osurua, the community hosting the institution.

    Prince, a final-year Computer Science student, was reportedly attacked in the presence of his girlfriend.

    Eyewitnesses told The Nation that Prince had recently completed his final exams and was preparing to defend his project ahead of mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

    Sources revealed that the gunmen stormed the compound, went directly to Prince’s room, and shot him in the abdomen, leaving him in a pool of blood.

    A neighbour, who requested anonymity, stated that the victim’s girlfriend raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to rush him to the hospital for treatment.

    The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but the incident has heightened fears of cult-related violence in the area. Authorities have yet to comment on the matter or confirm any arrests related to the crime.

    “The gunmen didn’t steal anything from the house. They did not even rob anybody in the compound. They just shot him and escaped.

    “I met the victim yesterday at about 4 pm with his girlfriend. Both of them wore Facemask. Jovially, I asked them why they were dressed in that manner. We all laughed.

    “The victim was very popular in the neighbourhood and a strong member of the choral group in his church. We are shocked by the way he died.”

    Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa DSP Timfon John said there were robbery and cult operations in the area where the victim’s compound was robbed while the students were shot dead.

    “Information at our disposal is that there was robbery and Cult operations in the area. They invaded and robbed where they shot somebody who was later identified as a student. But the investigation is ongoing”, he said

    A middle-aged man, whose identity remains unknown, was shot and killed by gunmen on Monday afternoon in Ibadan, Oyo State.

    The tragic incident occurred around 3 p.m. at Anfani Junction along Ring Road.

    Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, riding motorcycles, trailed the victim to the location before opening fire.

    He said: “We heard gunshots. He was shot twice. At first, we thought it was a tire burst, but then we saw the young man lying in a pool of his blood.

    “He was shot in the abdomen. They didn’t take his phone, but they took something from him that was likely to be money. We suspected that he must have been coming from a bank.

    Another motorcycle rider who witnessed the scene said: “I first thought it was police pursuing Yahoo boys. But when he was shot, we all had to run for safety. By the time we realized they were killers, they had moved toward Anfani Road.

    When reached for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, CSP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident. 

    He stated that an investigation was underway and efforts were ongoing to ascertain the identity of the deceased.

    Osifeso assured that updates would be provided as the investigation unfolds.

    Gunmen kidnap 46 people in Zamfara community

    No fewer than 46 persons, including women and children, have been kidnapped in Gana town in Zamfara State.

    According to residents, the attack took place around 10pm on Sunday.

    No official confirmation yet about the attack from the authorities, but a traditional leader in the community, Alhaji Garba Haure, told Reuters that dozens of gunmen on motorbike  invaded the community  and set fire to several homes and businesses, residents said.

    “We have 46 men, women and children that have been abducted altogether, and are still counting,” Haure said.

    He said the quick intervention of government security forces prevented the assailants from setting the entire town ablaze, adding that no life was lost in the attack.

    But another resident, Bala Harauma, told Reuters that the actual number  of abducted people could be higher.

    “Six people managed to escape while the armed gang moved the captives in the early hours of Monday,” Harauma said.

    Another resident, Yusuf Mohammed, explained that the bandits set ablaze dozens of houses and silos containing foodstuff.

    The Northwest  has been experiencing a severe security crisis, with terrorist and bandit groups wreaking havoc on local communities. These groups have been responsible for a multitude of violent attacks, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread kidnappings.

    Gunmen abduct two Adamawa pastors

    Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have kidnapped two pastors of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (a.k.a Ekklesiyar Ya’Uwa A Nigeria, EYN).

    The EYN is an Adamwa-based denomination with headquarters in Kwarhi, Hong Local Government Area, and branch church congregations mostly in the other states of the rest of the North East.

    The abducted clerics, Rev. James Kwayang and Rev. Ishaku Chiwar, were serving at the local council (LCC) church branch in Mbila-Malibu in Fufore Local Government Area where they were abducted.

    Our correspondent learnt yesterday that the two were taken away around 11pm last Sunday.

    Spokesman of the Adamawa State Command of the Nigeria Police, Suleiman Nguroje, who confirmed the abduction, said police personnel had been deployed to trail the gunmen and rescue the two clerics.

    Two pastors of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, popularly known as Ekklesiyar Ya’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), have been abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

    The church, headquartered in Kwarhi, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, has congregations across the North-East region.

    The abducted pastors, Rev. James Kwayang and Rev. Ishaku Chiwar, were serving at the Local Council Church (LCC) branch in Mbila-Malibu, Fufore Local Government Area, where they were taken around 11 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

    Suleiman Nguroje, spokesman for the Adamawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that personnel have been deployed to track the gunmen and rescue the clerics.

    Gunmen have kidnapped some travellers in Emure-Ile in Emure Local Government Area of Ekiti

    It was gathered that the bus conveying the travellers who were returning from Onitsha, Anambra state to Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital was ambushed on Sunday night by the daredevil attackers. 

    A source at the Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria,(RTEAN) Ado-Ekiti Motor Terminal branch, who confirmed the incident, said the driver, Mr. Sunday Emmanuel was kidnapped alongside the passengers. 

    The source said that the kidnappers had contacted the driver’s family demanding a whopping sum of N30 million ransom for each of the passengers. 

    He explained that the men of the under world abandoned some children in the bus, whose cries attracted attention of passersby in the early hours of Monday, before it was reported to the nearest police station.

    He said: “They drove the bus into the bush and dragged people inside the bush.

     “They called the family of the driver and I pleaded to speak with the driver and after our conversation, they demanded a ransom of N30 million. They said they would call back, but they have not done so yet.

    “They left some children on the bus, and it seems that some people to the the farm saw the kids and alerted the police in Emure-Owo. The driver’s union in Ado-Ekiti is currently holding a meeting on how to reach out to the kidnappers”, he said. 

    He added that two of the  kidnapped victims escaped while they were being herded into the bush. 

    Efforts to get the Ekiti police command’s comment was not successful as calls to the telephone line of the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu rang out.

    Abia community in fear as gunmen invade, kill two

    Panic has gripped residents of Umuchima community in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State following an early morning invasion by unidentified gunmen today, Friday, November 29. The attack has reportedly left many residents fleeing their homes for safety.

    According to unconfirmed reports, the gunmen, who stormed the community unexpectedly, killed a man known as Osama. The assailants accused him of providing information about their activities to the Nigerian Army, which recently carried out a raid in the area.

    Another victim, identified as the local vigilante commander, was also killed during the attack. His name could not be immediately confirmed.

    The incident has thrown the community into chaos, with many residents abandoning their ancestral homes and seeking refuge in neighboring towns. Fear of further violence has heightened as villagers anticipate potential retaliation from either the gunmen or security forces.

    This attack follows a raid earlier this week by the Nigerian Army on a suspected hideout of the gunmen in the same Umuchima community. The soldiers, drawn from various units under the 14 Brigade Army Headquarters at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, Ohafia, engaged the gunmen—believed to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—in a fierce gun battle.

    During the operation, which took place around 6 a.m. on Monday, the army overpowered the gunmen, forcing them to flee and abandoning motorcycles and other items at their camp.

    Despite the raid, there has been no official statement from either the Abia State government or the Nigerian Army regarding today’s retaliatory attack by the gunmen.

    • Soldiers, gunmen battle in Abia

    Gunmen have set ablaze the vehicle of a vigilance group in Anambra, injuring one in the process.

    It occurred at Amesi, the community of the former Chief Executive of Transcorp Hotels, Valentine Ozigbo.

    The attack came four days after gunmen struck in Nnewi before the burial of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, where they killed two persons and burning a Venza car.

    Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, a Superintendent, who confirmed the incident, said it took place on Sunday.

    However, an indigene of the area, who spoke with The Nation yesterday, said one person was killed during the attack while some others got injured

    The source said:  “the Police will protect their own, but some Policemen were injured during the shootout, but one Vigilante man was killed while others got injured.”

    Ikenga said that police operatives responded swiftly to the attack, rescuing the injured vigilante who was taken to the hospital.

    Ikenga said the police secured the scene of the attack to prevent further criminal activity and ensure properties and goods were safeguarded.

    He also said that Joint Security Forces (JSF) had intensified patrols in the area, employing Intelligence-led operations to deny the criminals the opportunity to cause further harm and facilitate their eventual arrest.

    The attack by the hoodlums two days to the burial of Ubah, forced the Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, to close schools in Nnewi area till yesterday.

    Though Commissioner for Education Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, debunked it, but students in Nnewi area had been at home since then, but will resume today (Tuesday).

    When The Nation moved around Awka town Monday, uncountable security operatives were seen parading the streets of the community in their vehicles due to a voice note from the hoodlums circulated on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, reports from Mbata, Umuchima village in Isiala Ngwa North local government area of Abia State have it that personnel of the Nigerian Army from the 14 Brigade , Ohafia, Ohafia local government area of the state and unknown gunmen have been locked in a gun duel.
