    JUST IN: Soldiers clash with unknown gunmen in Abia community

    A fierce gun battle has been reported between personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia state

    Unconfirmed reports indicated that over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers arrived at Umuchima village around 6 a.m., targeting suspected gunmen reportedly camped near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and the Mbaise axis of Imo State.

    Soldiers have reportedly taken control of key junctions leading in and out of the village, while others engage the gunmen in nearby bushes. Gunfire has persisted as of the time of reporting.

    No official statements have been issued by the Nigerian Army or the Abia State government. 

    This followed Governor Alex Otti’s recent pledge to enhance security following a meeting with top security officials.

    Gunmen kill 13 in Benue

    Some gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed 13 persons in Azege settlement, Mbaya, Tombo ward, Logo Local Government Area in Benue State.

    Former Caretaker Chairman of Logo Local Government Area, Benjamin Uzenda, told The Nation that the herdsmen who had made several attempts to overran Azege, in the past two months stormed the farming yesterday morning around 7am.

    “They opened fire on residents for hours, and fled before security personnel arrived,” he said.

    Many residents have deserted the area.

    Also, the gunmen invaded the farm of the traditional ruler of Gwer West, Chief Daniel Abomtse, destroying over 20 hectares of guinea and cassava.

    Chief Abomtse said aside cattle grazing the farms, herdsmen also used cutlasses to cut down crops.

    He decried the wanton destruction of the farms, and lamented the level of impunity with which herdsmen have been invading Gwer West, Benue and other communities.

    He called on governments to tame the herdsmen.

    Gunmen who abducted journalist’s relations demand N50m ransom

    Gunmen who abducted three relations of former Daily Trust Editor, Malam Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, in Kogi State on Thursday evening have demanded N50 million ransom.

    Family sources said the kidnapped relations included a male and two females among who was Ajobe’s immediate younger sister identified as Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir.

    According to the family, the victims were abducted on their way from a nearby community market in Awo, Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State at a point along Ankpa-Adoka-Markudi Road.

    Ajobe lost his mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, on Sunday after a protracted illness.

    The family revealed that the victims went to the market to purchase items for the seventh-day prayers of the journalist’s deceased mother when they were kidnapped.

    Although the journalist could not be immediately reached for details on the incident, the Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident.

    A close family source also revealed that the abductors had demanded N50 million ransom to ensure the release of the victims.

    The family source revealed: “Yes, three of Ajobe’s family members were kidnapped at gunpoint at about 3 pm on Thursday.

    “The kidnappers reached out on Friday afternoon demanding N50 million as ransom.

    “However, I can’t confirm what the family is offering in the negotiations because I had to leave the community for an emergency in Lokoja.

    “What I can say is that no amount has been paid yet and the victims are still in captivity.”

    Contacted, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), William Aya, confirmed the incident.

    He said the Divisional police officer (DPO) in charge of the area had already deployed his men in the area to ensure the rescue of the victims

    He added that the state Police Commissioner, Bethrand Onuoha, had also directed a police tactical team to be drafted to the area to reinforce the security operatives there.

    He assured that everything possible was being done to ensure the safe release of the victims and bring the gunmen to justice.

    Gunmen shoot lawyer dead in Benue

    The Benue State Police Command yesterday confirmed the murder in Makurdi, Benue State capital, of a lawyer, Barrister Mike Ofikwu on Wednesday.

    The spokesman of the state’s police command, Sewuese Anene, told journalists that the deceased lawyer was shot by gunmen numbering about seven outside his home on Otukpa Street as he was returning from work at about 8pm.

    Ofikwu was said to have been shot at close range at his gate after which concerned neighbours rushed him to the hospital.

    Unfortunately, he had lost too much blood and so could not survive the attack.

    Ofikwu died at the Federal University of Health Science Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, on Thursday morning.

    A lawyer who prefers anonymity said Ofikwu was until his death the Secretary of the Otukpo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

    After shooting at him several times, the gunmen were also said to have cut his hand with a machete.

    Ofikwu was said to have died at the hospital while receiving treatment at about 1.40 am on Thursday while his remains were deposited in the mortuary of the same hospital.

    The command has since launched an investigation into the incident.

    Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Eastern Security Network (ESN) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have attacked an army checkpoint in Abia State.

    Two soldiers were killed in a fierce gun battle between the gunmen and soldiers of the 14 Brigade headquarters, Ohafia at the checkpoint.

    Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened yesterday morning at the army checkpoint located at the Carpenter Shed, Ekenobizi, Umuopara, Umuahia South local government area axis of the popular Onuimo Bridge; a popular boundary between Abia State and Imo State.

    The incident, sources disclosed happened at about 6:18am, forcing road users and traders around to scamper for safety as gun shots rent the air.

    The checkpoint, it gathered, was setup last Thursday as a measure to improve security in the state.

    Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu Onah in a statement on behalf of Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA confirmed the attack.

    Onah said “the gallant troops repelled the attack forcing the irredentist IPOB and ESN to withdraw in disarray with gunshot wounds, abandoning one Sienna and one Lexus Jeep vehicles that were used for the attack. However, in the ensuing firefight two soldiers paid the supreme price.

     “The Joint Task Force Southeast Operation UDO KA is calling and appealing to the good people of the Southeast especially residents of Abia State with relevant, reliable and credible information that could help in apprehending the fleeing members of the irredentist group who committed this heinous crime and also help to annihilate the criminals in the region.

    “The Joint Task Force Southeast Operation UDO KA will continue to carry out its constitutional roles of safeguarding lives and property in line with global best practice as laid down in the rules of engagement guiding its operations.”

    The Nation has learnt some gunmen murdered two students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area.

    It was gathered that two other students were taken away to unknown destination, with a N30 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers to free the abducted students.

    The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has caused anxiety in the community.

    A source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the incident occurred at a hostel outside the school, adding that one of the victims was an ex-student of the school.

    Delta State Police Command spokesman, Bright Edafe, a Superintendent, who confirmed the incident, said he was unaware that a ransom is being demanded for the release of the abductees.

    According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the killings may be cult related.

    He said investigations were ongoing to unravel the masterminds of the incid ent.

    The incident, sources said happened around 6:18 am, forcing road users and traders around to scamper for safety as gunshots rented the air.

    The checkpoint,it gathered, was set up last Thursday to improve security in the State. 

    Sources disclosed that the gunmen who apparently took the soldiers unawares, dismantled the checkpoint after overpowering them. 

    The Nation recalls some armed men were repelled by personnel of the 144 Battalion in Ukwa West local government area when they (gunmen) attacked a police checkpoint along the ever-busy Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, had fled the state and headed to imo State.

    But Lt. Col. Jonah Unuakhalu Onah in a statement on behalf of Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA said: “At the early hours of today 13 November  2024, troops of the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA deployed at a checkpoint along Umuahia – Owerri road in Umuahia south local government area of Abia State came under attack carried out by the irredentist group of the  Indigenous People of Biafara (IPOB) and its armed affiliate the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

    Soldiers repel gunmen attack in Abia

    Soldiers of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks; 14 Brigade headquarters, Ohafia, attached to 144 Battalion, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have repelled attempted attacks by gunmen on both police and military checkpoints in the state.

    Our correspondent reports that the gunmen had reportedly attacked some police officers who were on a stop and search operation, near the popular Aro Ngwa axis of the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

     It was learnt that the quick response of soldiers from the 144 Battalion stopped the gunmen from setting the patrol van of the police team on fire.

    Our correspondent gathered that soldiers who were at the Aro Ngwa Junction, upon receiving information on the attack of the police personnel, alerted their colleagues at the Forward Operation Base (FOB) in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state for support.

    Some of the commuters who witnessed the event described the gun battle as a near war battle situation.

    According to the commuters, the gun battle was so fierce that they had to abandon their vehicles to take safety in nearby bushes to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

    A commuter, Mr. Chidi Gabriel said: “We were heading to Umuahia when suddenly, we saw some people shooting; our driver was quick enough to turn our car, facing Aba.

    “Immediately, he found a place to clear his car, we all came down from the car and ran into the bush. We saw the army move towards the point with their gun trucks and Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), apparently to chase after the gunmen.

    “For over one hour, there was no car coming from both ends of the express until the army came back and told us that it was safe for us to go. Even at that, we were moving, holding our hearts in our hands. I have been hearing about this, but it is frightening witnessing what we saw.”

    Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia State Police Command, Maureen Chinaka were unsuccessful.

    Gunmen kill three, injure two in Plateau

    Three youths were murdered by attackers in Rakok village of Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday.

    A statement by the Berom Youths Moulders Association’s National President Dalyop Mwantiri, said the victims were gruesomely murdered in the course of carrying out their businesses in the community when the assailants attacked.

    The association condemned the attack which has been reoccurring in the area with a call on security agencies to address the breach and destruction of farm produce.

    He said: “The recurrence of continued killings, ambushes, assault on women, willful destruction and mass harvest of corn and other crops belonging to Berom native inhabitants by Fulani militants and criminal gangs in and around Barkin Ladi, Riyom and part of Jos South Local Government Areas as well as parts of Plateau State should be stemmed with corresponding military action to avoid degeneration of the situation.

    “The Berom Youths Moulder Association (BYM), therefore, calls on security agents, especially Operation Safe Haven to, as a matter of urgency, crackdown on the aggressions daily perpetrated so as not to allow the aforementioned areas and plateau state at large is a theatre of bloodshed as witnessed in the past.”

    The association is appealing for investigation and subsequent arrest of the perpetrators of the killers and compensation for massive crop destruction and harvest as well as motorcycles stolen recently within the general area as well as medical support to the injured.

    The police and Joint Security Task Force Operation Safe Haven are yet to issue any statement or response to the recent attack.

    Gunmen abduct Catholic priest in Imo

    Gunmen have abducted Rev Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo Community, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

    According to church authorities, Azubuike was abducted on Tuesday evening along the Ayayi community when he was returning from an assignment.

    The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, which confirmed the development in a statement, solicited prayers for the priest’s safety and swift return to his parish.

    The statement by the Chancellor/Secretary of the diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, said: “I am directed to inform you that one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, was kidnapped this evening, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at about 6pm.

    “We solicit your fervent prayers that he may come back to us safe and sound while trusting in your goodwill and solidarity,” the statement read.

    Reacting to the incident, Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the command had commenced an investigation to rescue the abducted priest.

    Gunmen murder lawmaker’s mother-in-law and brother-in-law in Jos

    A Mother and son were at the weekend killed by gunmen around Mista Ali, Zaria Road of Jos North Local Government of Plateau State.

    A member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, who confirmed the incident said the victims were his mother-in-law and brother-in-law.

    Details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report.

    The Nation also gathered that the mother and son were laid to rest at the family home in Jos on Saturday.

    Gagdi, who represents Pankshin/Kanm/Kanke federal constituency, shared photos from the funeral, describing the murder as violent and senseless acts.

    He said: ‘‘Today, alongside my wife Jemimah, we laid to rest her mother, Mrs. Mary Jonathan, and our brother, Mark Jonathan, who were tragically taken from us by violent and senseless acts.
