    Gunmen kill 18 in Benue community

    Gunmen on Wednesday evening launched a coordinated assault on Anyiin town, Logo Local Government area, Benue state, killing 18 people.

    Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Kate Aneene, confirmed the attack.

    Eyewitness David Anbua said the gunmen appeared from multiple directions, including Tyogbenda, Mbazaar, and Mbayar.

    The attackers focused on killing and burning houses, without taking any property.

    Anyiin town is former Governor Gabriel Suswam’s country home, has endured 15 such attacks by suspected herdsmen.

    Fear has driven many residents to flee the area.

    Gunmen have abducted Ven.  Arinze Ajaefobi, an  Archdeacon of Oyi Central Archdeaconry .

    The Nation gathered that he was abducted around 9:30pm at the gate of St James’ Parish in Awkuzu, Oyi local government area.

    He was said to be the Vicar of the same Church

    His abductors were said not to have established any contact as of the time of filing this report

    Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga said the command had not received the report but one of the Senior Police Officers in the state confirmed it.

    The Nation gathered that the church had gone into prayer sessions  for the safe release of the victim.

    Gunmen kill nine in Anambra

    No fewer than nine persons have been reportedly killed in Awka, Anambra State by  suspected gunmen

    The incident happened around 10am at ifite-Awka behind the school gate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)

    The Nation gathered that the assailants stormed the area in two vehicles and started shooting randomly.

    Though, an eyewitness described it as a cult war, their operational mode, according to a source, showed that of Biafra agitators

    The source also told The Nation that bullets hit other persons in the process.

    He said the responding team had taken over the scene of indiscriminate shooting by 9:15 am. 

    Ikenga said: “Preliminary information shows that the armed men unprovoked started shooting sporadically and some bullets fatally hit four persons in the area and were rushed to the hospital for aid by the police operatives. 

    “Also, some empty shells of bullets have been recovered at the scene. Meanwhile, operations are ongoing in the area and further details shall be communicated, please.”

    The cult war continued on Monday at Ahoada East, Rivers State, following the killing of two more persons at Odiokwu junction in Ula-Ehuda,in Igbu Akoh-Kingdom.

    The bloodshed occurred  barely 24 hours after five persons were killed in Edeoha Community, Upata kingdom in Ahoada East.

    The Public Relations Officer of Igbu-Akoh kingdom, Hector Chinem  on Monday  disclosed that on Sunday night, residents observed movement of some persons dressed in military raincoats.

    He said they woke up on Monday and discovered two dead bodies riddles with bullets.

    Chinem lamented that  the killing came barely 24 hours after five persons were killed in Edeoha community.

    He called on the Rivers Commissioner of Police,CP Mohammed Mustapha to as a matter of urgency strengthen security of the area.

    He  pleaded with youths of the LGA to lay down their arms and allow peace to reign.

    It was gathered on  Monday afternoon that there was heightened tension in the LGA as some natives had started fleeing their homes.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Grace Iringe Koko was yet to respond to the Monday killing.

    Koko on Sunday confirmed  the killing at Edeoha saying it was cult related adding  that the Commissioner of Police,CP Mohammed Mustapha had directed the Ahoada Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer(DPO) of Ahoada Police Division to commence investigation

    Gunmen ambush, kill DPO in Delta

    The Divisional Police Officer of Agbarho Police Station in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was ambushed and killed on Sunday night.

    The Delta Police Command confirmed the incident to The Nation on Monday morning. 

    Spokesman of the Command, SP Bright Edafe, said: “It is confirmed, the DPO Agbarho was killed and the Orerokpe DPO was injured. It was an ambush”.

    The DPO was said to have resumed at the station just a few days ago.

    According to sources, the DPO with his Orerokpe counterpart, CSP Paul and their men were ambushed around 1am at Owodokpokpo – the rail station axis of the town, while on their way for an operation.

    It was learnt that the Orerokpe DPO was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in critical condition. 

    Several residents of the area who spoke with The Nation on Monday morning recounted their sleepless night as a result of the heavy sounds of gunshots.

    Super Eagles: Gunmen kidnap reporters in Anambra

    Gunmen, believed to be members of a secessionist group, have kidnapped some reporters en route to cover the Super Eagles match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State

    The abduction reportedly took place in Isseke, a notorious community in the Ihiala local government area. 

    While some sources claim the incident occurred on Wednesday, others indicate it happened early Thursday morning.

    The Super Eagles are set to face the Knights of Libya today at Uyo Stadium. According to one source, one victim has been reported killed, and the whereabouts of the others remain unknown. 

    The state police command, represented by spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident and stated that a team has been deployed to search for the victims.

    “As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are however not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape.”

    Ikenga said he has no information of the rescue of any of the victims.

    Gunmen, soldiers gunfight leaves one dead in Imo

    • ‘No soldier died’

    A fierce gun battle between soldiers and gunmen in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State has left one dead and many injured.

    But the Army said only one bandit was killed.

    The attack occurred at the Aba branch in Ehime Mbano about 9pm, sources told The Nation.

    The source said: “Some non-state actors attacked and killed some soldiers in the area yesterday. The whole place is on fire, and troops have taken over nearby communities.”

    Residents fled in panic as shootings rent the air, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty.

    “We are terrified,” said a resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “The sound of gunfire is still echoing in our ears. We don’t know what will happen next. We are worried, Ehime used to be a serene environment, we don’t know what is happening,” he added.

    A disturbing video circulating online showed armed gunmen storming the Ehime-Mbano army camp, setting operational vehicles ablaze and chanting ominous battle songs.

    The masked assailants,who identified themselves as “the angels,” gloated about their takeover.

    “We are the angels! The angels are here!” they chanted. “The army has run away. Why are they running? They should stand and face us.”

    However, the Army denied the killing of its men, saying that the gunmen stormed the Ehime Mbano Council Secretariat, but were repelled by the soldiers.

    Suspected gunmen yesterday killed three policemen, and burn their vehicle in a gun battle in Nnewi, Anambra State

    Though the state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said only two of their men were killed, one of the residents, told The Nation they were indeed three.

    The source said the hoodlums after killing the security operatives, they set their vehicle ablaze.

    The killings and kidnappings had taken over Anambra for the past one year.

    Ikenga, a Superintendent of Police, in a statement in Awka, said the manhunt for the attackers had started by the command with Joint Security Forces (JSF).

    “Joint Security Force begins a manhunt on armed men who murdered two police operatives on investigation in the early hours of  at Uruagu, Nnewi North local government area.

    “Preliminary information reveals that the armed men started shooting sporadically on sighting the police operatives and threw an improvised explosive into their operational vehicle.

    “Unfortunately, two of the operatives paid the supreme price while the vehicle caught fire.

    “Given the above, the command calls on the public, especially the eyewitnesses and others, to aid the ongoing operations in the area.’’

    Suspected gunmen killed three policemen and burned their vehicle during a gun battle in Nnewi, Anambra state.

    The state police public relations officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that two officers were killed, but a resident told The Nation that three officers lost their lives.

    The resident also stated that after killing the officers, the gunmen set their vehicle on fire in the early hours of Thursday, October 3.

    The area has been plagued by killings and kidnappings over the past year.

    Ikenga, a Superintendent of Police, stated in a release on Thursday in Awka that the command, along with Joint Security Forces JSF, has commenced a manhunt for the attackers.

    Gunmen kidnap Provost of School of Nursing Imo

    Gunmen have kidnapped the Provost of School of Nursing, Mgbirichi, Imo State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Duru.

    Duru, a former Provost of Imo State School of Nursing Sciences, Orlu was abducted around 6pm on Thursday along Abakuru Mgbirichi road in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area.

    The incident has caused widespread panic and anxiety in the community.

    According to Valentine Aligo, Director of Socials at Princess School of Nursing Mgbirichi, Duru was kidnapped with her driver and a young girl.

    However, the kidnappers later released the driver but took the young girl with them.

    He said the school has reported the incident to the area police station but the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, was yet to comment on the matter.
