    Gunmen abduct High Court Judge, driver, kill orderly in A’Ibom

    Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a High Court judge, Justice Joy Unwana, and her driver in the Oron local government area of Akwa Ibom state.

    The Nation gathered that her police orderly was killed during the incident which occurred on Monday along the Uyo-Okobo road which leads to Oron town.

    The chairman Oron branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Torosco Eyene confirmed the incident yesterday.

    He said the judge was kidnapped on her way back from a court sitting.

    He disclosed that members of the association have scheduled a meeting with the State Commissioner of Police and DSS tomorrow (Wednesday)

    He said: “Yes, the sitting Judge in Oron was kidnapped yesterday (Monday) on her way back to Uyo after court sitting. By tomorrow Wednesday, we are moving down to Uyo to meet with the commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durusinmi, and the DSS on the issue.”

    The State Police Public Relations Officer Odiko Macdon could not be reached for further confirmation as calls to his phone were not answered as of press time.

    Gunmen kill four soldiers, two drivers, abduct Koreans in Rivers

    • We will track down killers, says Army

    Gunmen have ambushed a convoy of an engineering company at Ahoada/Abua axis of the East-West road in Rivers State, killing four soldiers, two drivers and abducting two expatriates identified as Koreans.

    The incident was said to have occurred at about 9.30am while the company was conveying its workers to a camp in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. 

    The incident was said to have caused panic and gridlock around the area.

    A security source, who spoke in confidence, said the suspected kidnappers ambushed the convoy and opened fire on the occupants.

    He said: “During the attack, the assailants opened fire on the convoy, killing four soldiers and two civilian-drivers and subsequently abducted two Koreans in the process.

    “Details are still sketchy, but efforts are ongoing to get more details from the units. Further details will be forwarded as soon as possible.”

    The Army confirmed the incident, described it as unwarranted and vowed that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.

    The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division, Army Public Relations Officer, Maj. Danjuma Danjuma, in a statement said it was carried out by suspected militants.

    The statement said: “Troops of 5 Battalion on routine escort duty for an oil servicing company at Enweh West manifold, Ahoada East Local Government of Rivers State, were attacked by suspected militants, at Emesu junction, along Amungboro-Emuphan road. Unfortunately, four soldiers were killed in action, with two other oil workers unaccounted for. 

    “The suspects allegedly escaped through  Emesu waterside, using Orashi River. Troops are combing the general area to fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act. Additionally, efforts are ongoing to ensure that the unaccounted oil workers are found.

    “The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army/Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, South South, Operation DELTA SAFE, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, while acknowledging the supreme sacrifice paid by the gallant soldiers, strongly condemned this unwarranted attack. 

    “He reassured that efforts are ongoing to track down these criminals to pay for their crimes. Consequently, the public are kindly requested to provide credible and actionable intelligence that can lead to the arrest of these criminals.

    “The public is also assured that troops will not relent until all forms of criminalities, such as militancy, oil theft and pipeline vandalism are effectively eliminated within the Niger Delta region”.

    Gunmen abduct Cross River traditional ruler

    The traditional ruler of Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River, Etiyin Maurice Edet, was on Sunday night abducted by gunmen at his residence in the council area.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an aide to the traditional ruler was shot dead in the process of the kidnapping.

    The spokesperson of the state Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident but said details were unknown to her as at press time.

    A source who, however, said the traditonal ruler’s aide was killed as he tried to prevent his principal from being abducted.

    Akpabuyo, notorious for criminal activities, is less than 15 kilometres from Calabar, the capital city of the state.

    Meanwhile, Prof Patrick Egaga of the University of Calabar (Unical) has been released by his abductors after 26 days in captivity.

    Egaga who is Unical’s Director of Servicom, was abducted in the institution’s Staff quarters after which his abducted demanded for a ransom of N50 million.

    NAN reports that Calabar and its environs have witnessed increase in cases of abduction in the past few months.

    The targets for abduction are usually lecturers, lawyers, medical doctors, clergymen and high profile individuals.

    Gunmen invade night club, kill nine security men in Anambra

    Tension has continued to mount in Anambra state, following the killing of no fewer than nine security men by suspected gunmen

    The incident happened at Oba, Idemili south local government area of Anambra state on the midnight of Sunday, December 10.

    According to a source who spoke with The Nation on account of anonymity, the hoodlums were many in two hilux vehicles when they invaded the club house.

    The source further said their aim was to pick the owner of the club house, which the Vigilance security men attached to the place resisted.

    The source said: “And in anger, the gunmen opened fire on the security operatives and killed all of them including one police man and left.

    “Before they left, they beheaded one of their victims and cut off the leg of another.”

    Confirming the report, Anambra state police public relations officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the assailants would not go unpunished, adding that the command was on their trail.

    However, he said those killed were the operatives of local vigilante in Oba in a nightclub, describing it as unfortunate

    Ikenga said: “Yes, the incident happened. Our men were alerted and they quickly moved to the scene of the incident, but the gunmen had already fled.

    “Our men have recovered the bodies of the vigilante operatives who were fatally wounded, while others sustained various degrees of injury.

    “We have also fully deployed our men to Oba, and operation is ongoing. So far, no arrest has been made,” he said.

    The Nightclub’s attack by gunmen was not the first in the community as one of the popular native doctors in the area (names withheld) had months back been kidnapped by gunmen in his hotel.

    Though he was later released after some days, but it was gathered that a big ransome was paid to the hoodlums.

    Gunmen abduct Catholic priest, driver in Imo community

    Gunmen have reportedly abducted the priest in charge of St Michael’s Catholic Church parish in Umuekebi community in the Osuoweerre Autonomous Community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, Rev Fr Kingsley Eze.

    A source said the priest and another man identified as Uchenna Newman, who drove the priest in a Volvo jeep were kidnapped at Orie ama junction around 8pm on Thursday night.

    A parishioner who pleaded not to be mentioned said that the congregants were shocked by the abduction of the priest.

     The source said ”it is true. Our parish priest, Rev Fr Kingsley Eze popularly known as Father Ichie has been kidnapped. He was kidnapped alongside Mr Uchenna Newman, at Orie ama junction on Thursday at about 8pm.

    “They came out of the Volvo jeep to buy some items at the junction when they were kidnapped. They also robbed businessmen at the junction. This is so unfortunate. We sincerely pray for the safe return of our parish priest and Mr Uchenna.”

    He said “last night, around 8:30pm, a Rev Father and a driver were kidnapped at Orieama junction. Several other shops were robbed and destroyed by the kidnappers who operated on two motorcycles.”

    The spokesperson for the police in the State, Henry Okoye, told The Nation that he was yet to receive a report on the incident. “I am yet to get a report about the incident.”

    Yet to be identified gunmen have reportedly attacked two communities in Plateau State, killing seven persons.

     Sources from the  affected Communities told the Nation that six men and a lady were killed in Pukah community while  gunmen stole sheep and other domestic animals in Pinper community.

     The victims were said to have died following attacks by the assailants in Pukah and Pinper communities of Mangu Local Government Area of the state in the early hours of Thursday.

    A resident of Pukah community, John Mark, confirmed the killings to newsmen in  Jos on Thursday.

     Mark said, “The Pukah community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State came under heavy attack by gunmen early this morning (Thursday). They also attacked another community in the council area known as Pinper.

     “In Pukah community, they killed one lady and six men. But in Pinper, they carted away several numbers of sheep before they fled the communities “ Another Resident of the community who does not want his name in print said over 1,000 livestock were carted away by the gunmen.

     Contacted the spokesman of the Plateau state Police command, DSP. Alfred Alabo, told the Nation on phone that, “I heard about the story. But, we are waiting for the DPO. to come and give us proper briefing.

    Gunmen kill two police officers, injure others Imo community

    There is palpable tension in Ahaizu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State as two police personnel were killed by unidentified gunmen on Monday, November 27.

    It was gathered that the policemen who were attached to the Ahiara police station were killed when the gunmen attacked them at a filling station at Ahiara junction in the local government area, resulting in the death of the two police officers and injuries to others.

    Confirming the incident, the police spokesman in the state, Henry Okoye said: “The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, Commander 34 Artillery Brigade and Joint Task Force (JTF) operatives are combing the scene of crime for evidence that will possibly lead to the arrest of hoodlums responsible for the attack and killing of two Policemen at Ahiara Junction, in Ahaizu Mbaise LGA of Imo State.”

    The Nation recalls that on Saturday evening, the traditional ruler of the Otulu Autonomous Community in the neighbouring Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, Eze Joe Ochulor was found dead at the neighbouring Aboh Mbaise LGA.

    Also, a few days earlier, the ward chairman of the People Democratic Party in the Ife/ Akpodim/ Chokoneze in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of the state, Chiedoziem Anyanwu was assassinated in the presence of his wife.

    Gunmen reportedly murder monarch in Imo community

    Gunmen have reportedly murdered the traditional ruler of the Otulu community in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state, Eze Joe Ochulor.

    The monarch was reportedly kidnapped by yet-to-be-identified assailants on Saturday morning and was found dead on the roadside on Saturday evening in another community.

    A source who pleaded not to be mentioned said on Sunday, November 26, that the father’s lifeless body was found on the roadside at Mbutu community in the neighbouring Aboh Mbaise LGA on Saturday night.

    He said: “The traditional ruler of the Otulu community in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state has been killed. The lifeless body of the king was found on the roadside at Mbutu community in Aboh Mbaise LGA on Saturday night. He was abducted from his Palace on Saturday morning.

    “There is fear everywhere. Villagers are afraid because the traditional ruler was taken from his home on Saturday morning only for his lifeless body to be found on the same Saturday. This is horrifying.”

    When contacted, the public relations for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, confirmed the killing of the monarch and assured that the command would apprehend the suspects.

    A total of 11 people were reportedly killed when gunmen raided Zamfara and Taraba states’ villages over the weekend.

    Ten of the victims, said to be farmers, were killed by hoodlums suspected to be bandits in Taraba State. The eleventh victim was killed in Zamfara State where the hoodlums abducted 150 residents.

    The Nation learnt that the Taraba attack occurred on Friday in Nyicwu Village, a suburb of Yangtu Development Area of Takum Local Government Council.

    The Taraba State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Usman, disclosed this yesterday, adding that the assailants escaped after the attack.

    The victims, all members of the Kuteb ethnic group, were identified by the Command as Hope Hassan, Rimamsomtse Lamadi, Holiness Enoch, Rimamtsiki Enoch, Egwu Hassan, Saleh Kyatiki, Ephraim Atenji, Manasseh Atenji, and Hassan Songure.

    “The Commissioner of Police Joseph Eribo, has ordered the immediate deployment of an anti-kidnapping team to the area,” the command’s spokesman said.

    The Nation gathered that the remains of the victims had been released to their relatives for burial.

    In a related development, gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram insurgents on Friday killed one person and abducted about 150 people, including women and children, in a coordinated attack on four villages in Zamfara State.

    The Nation learnt that the gunmen riding on dozens of motorcycles stormed the villages of Mutunji, Kwanar-Dutse, Sabon-Garin Mahuta and Unguwar Kawo in the Maru local government area of the state and shattered the peaceful atmosphere.

    Dankandai Musa, a resident of one of the villages, said he managed to slip away unnoticed during the chaos. But 20 members of his household were taken.

    ‘I managed to escape after they were regrouping us and the people from the three other villages that were attacked,’ he said. ‘I fled while they were dragging us to the bush.’

    A local village head said Lawali Damana, leader of the gunmen, had demanded 100 million naira ($119,000) from the villages as retribution after Nigerian troops killed four of his men earlier.

    ‘So yesterday, he came in the company of his boys and took away over a hundred people with him and we haven’t heard anything from him since. One person was shot dead in the process of taking the hostages,’ said the village head, who didn’t want to be named for fear of being targeted.

    Meanwhile, air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jets have killed four Boko Haram leaders in Borno State.

    The air strikes hit Tagoshe on the Mandara mountain, killing Abu Asad, Ibrahim Nakeeb, Mujaheed Dimtu, Mustafa Munzira who were key Boko Haram leaders in the Ali Ngulde group, and several fighters.

    NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

    According to Gabkwet, the terrorists were massing up at an isolated location consisting of three zinced structures amid several trees “either for a well-planned meeting or preparing for a major attack on our troops,” when bombs hit the location.

    He said: “over 100 heavily armed terrorists were observed throwing banters and moving randomly around the structures which also had four troop carriers.  The aftermath of the air strike revealed that two out of the three structures, as well as the entire troop carriers were destroyed.

    “There are also indications that Abu Asad, a key figure in the Ali Ngulde group under Boko Haram, as well as other terrorists like Ibrahim Nakeeb, Mujaheed Dimtu, Mustafa Munzir and several fighters were among the several terrorists eliminated in the air strike.”

    Gabkwet said the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar has commended the Air Component Commander and his men on the successful operations.

    He said the NAF’s chief urges them to continue to synergize with the Land Component as they maintain the momentum in, “keeping the terrorists on their toes.”

    “We must continue to justify the trust and confidence the Federal Government and our people have bestowed on us by ensuring that we go all out in making life unbearable for these terrorists and criminals until they surrender or are completely eliminated,” the NAF’s chief said.

    A similar success story was recorded by the troops of Operation Haderin Daji in the Northwest zone as they neutralized suspected terrorists in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

    A statement issued by the spokesman of OPHD, Captain Yahaya Ibrahim said the troops also rescued kidnapped hostages in Faskari and Batsari Local Government Area of the State.

    “Furthermore, troops’ offensive operations led to the neutralization of terrorists in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State. Troops responded to bandits activities in Malumfashi and Danmusa Local Government Areas of Zamfara and Katsina States respectively as well as Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

    The statement disclosed that the troops conducted a fighting patrol in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State and arrested a suspected impostor in Mallam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

    “On 13 November 2023, following a tip-off, troops arrested five suspected terrorists in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Preliminary investigation revealed that suspects were part of the terrorists that attacked Sayaya village on 6 Nov 23 in the same LGA”

    “On 13 and 14 November 2023, troops intercepted and rescued 11 kidnapped hostages in Faskari and Batsari Local Government Areas of the State”

    “On 15 November 2023, troops while on fighting patrol made contact with terrorists in Batsari LGA of Katsina State. Following a firefight, troops neutralized one terrorist and recovered one AK47 rifle, 2 magazines loaded with 20 rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammo and 4 motorcycles”

    “Between 18 and 19 November 2023, in separate operations, troops responded to information on bandits activities in Maru, Malumfashi and Danmusa Local Government Areas of Zamfara and Katsina States respectively. Following a firefight, troops neutralized 4 bandits and rescued 2 kidnapped hostages”

    “The troops recovered one AK47 rifle with magazine loaded with 13 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammo, 3 mobile phones, one motorcycle and the sum of N18,560.00”

    The statement added that, On 20 November 2023, troops conducted a fighting patrol and made contact with bandits in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, saying that with a firefight, troops neutralized 4 terrorists and recovered 2 locally made pistols, one long Dane gun, 5 empty cases of 7.62mm special ammo, 4 mobile phones and destroyed 2 motorcycles.

    “On 21 November 2023, troops on fighting patrol responded to kidnapping activities in Tangaza LGA of Sokoto State. Troops rescued 52 kidnapped hostages on the operation.”

    It further stated that On 17 November 2023, the air component of Operation Haderin Daji conducted air interdiction on a targeted terrorist leader’s enclave known as Lalbi Nagogo.

    “The enclave is in Danmusa LGA of Katsina State. Following confirmation of the terrorist and his foot soldiers’ presence, the location was struck with rockets and cannons. Battle Damage Assessment revealed several terrorists were neutralized with various structures destroyed”

    “The troops neutralized 20 terrorists, arrested 20 terrorists and rescued 83 kidnapped hostages. Troops also recovered 2 AK47 rifles, one AK47 rifle loaded with 13 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, one long Dane gun, 2 locally made pistols, 72 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 5 empty cases of rounds of 7.62mm special 4 magazines, 5 motorcycles, 7 mobile phones and amongst others”

    “All recovered items, arrested suspects and rescued hostages were handed over to the relevant authority for further actions. These actions include prosecution*

    Gunmen kill PDP ward chairman in Imo

    Gunmen have allegedly killed the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Ward in the Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu.

    The incident occurred at his shop in Villa Park extension.

    The two assailants, according to a source, rode on a motorbike.

    It was learnt the gunmen met his wife and asked for the husband who they fired at, leaving him dead.

    The murder has brought an uneasy calm to the PDP in the state.

     PDP’s Director of New Media, Lancelot Obiaku, confirmed the killing but did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding it.

    Imo Police spokesman, Henry Okoye,  said: “It has not been ascertained whether he was PDP chairman or not. “

    However Imo Commissioner Aboki Danjuma, he said “has ordered an investigation into the incident.”
