    Gunmen attack residence of Rivers factional Speaker

    Suspected political thugs have attacked the residence of Rivers factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

    Ehie, who was removed as Assembly Leader during the move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, later  announced himself as the House Speaker.

    Details of the incident on Ehie’s residence were still sketchy but it was gathered that security details of Ehie foiled the attack.

    A source simply identified as Ken  described the attack as an assassination attempt.

    He alleged that the attempted assassination was led by head of a security tactical unit in the state.

    He warned that some senior security officers in the State should be held responsible if anything happens to the Ehie and his household.

    He assured the public that footages of the act as captured by CCTV camera would be made public for confirmation and record purposes.

    According to him:  “Around 11pm on Sunday the 19th day of November, 2023, a group of Armed thugs and rogue security officers   attacked the private residence of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr. Edison Ogerenye Ehie, DSSRS, fully armed with an intention to assassinate Mr. Speaker and his family.

    “However, the thugs and rogue security  officers  were vehemently repelled in a gun battle by the official security details attached to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Edison Ogerenye Ehie, DSSRS.

    “It is imperative to note that the armed rogues and officers were properly and fully captured by CCTV footage in the residence, which shall be made available to all media Houses, including the CNN, Aljazeera and other National and International media outlets for the records.

    “Let it be on record that Rivers people, boys, girls, women, men including the aged shall in our numbers occupy the streets stark naked in demonstration against the Nigerian Police and those sponsoring violence in Rivers State, no matter how highly placed, Rivers people will resist them.”

    Two policemen killed as gunmen attack patrol team in Ebonyi

    Two policemen were killed on Friday, November 17, in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state as unidentified gunmen attacked a police patrol team.

    Police spokesperson in the state, Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the incident in a statement.

    According to her, the policemen were on regular patrol when they were attacked at Nwofe road by gunmen suspected to be members of a pro-separatist group.

    She said a third policeman in the team was wounded and currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

    She said: “Today 17/11/2023 at about 08:30 am, Operatives of the Command on patrol at Nwofe road at the outskirt of Abakaliki were attacked by armed hoodlums using a tinted Highlander vehicle with registration number unknown.

    “Two (2) of the Operatives were fatally wounded while one (1) is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.”

    The spokesperson noted that the Commissioner Of police in the state, Augustina Ogbodo on receiving the distress call immediately dispatched Tactical teams to the scene.

    She said the tactical team swung into action by giving the hoodlums a hot chase but the hoodlums escaped.

    The commissioner of Police, it was gathered, also visited the scene of the incident with her management team for an on-the-spot assessment.

    Onome added: “She is using this medium to call on well-meaning individuals of the State to avail the Command with useful information that can lead to the arrest of the fleeing hoodlums while assuring them of round-the-clock visibility patrol of the nooks and crannies of the state.”

    Gunmen in military uniform abduct youth leader in Rivers

    Unknown gunmen dressed in military uniform have abducted the Public Relations Officer of Igbu Ekoh Youth Association, Hector Chinem, at a fast food joint in Ahoada East Local Government Areas of Rivers State.

    A youth group, the Concerned Ekpeye Youths for Peace and Development (CEYPD) confirmed the development on Friday, November 17, saying the incident occurred on Thursday night.

    Hector, who was said to be a major crusader against crime in the council ravaged by violent cult activities, was reportedly invited to a meeting by unknown individuals when his assailants struck.

    The group called on the abductors to release Hector unconditionally and appealed to the Commissioner of Police CP Oluntuji Disu and the DPO of Ahoada Police Division to urgently probe the incident and secure the freedom of Chinem.

    The group called on members of the public to provide useful information that could help the security agencies secure the unconditional release of the victim.

    It said: “We employ the LGA Chairman and those saddled with the responsibility of security lives and property in the LGA to do more in bringing lasting peace and reducing crime and criminality in the area.

    “Our traditional institutions are also called on to do more traditionally to curbing this crime confronting us boldly and challenging us to our faces.”

    The Director of Servicom at the University of Calabar (UNCAL), Prof. Patrick Egaga, was on Sunday night abducted from the University staff quarters.

    The state police command confirmed the abduction yesterday, but said action has been initiated to secure his release.

    The command’s spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, said the family didn’t report the incident ‘but we are working to secure his release’.

    The institution’s spokesperson, Effiong Eyo, also said the university learnt of the abduction yesterday morning.

    The gunmen were said to have whisked the don away through the river that overlooked the university’s staff quarters.

    It was also gathered they came in through the same river that connects Calabar to Akpabuyo Local Government Area.

    Gunmen on motorcycles,  Friday, struck Sagamu, Ogun State, rupturing the peace of the town once again.

    The victim, an unidentified young man, was shot in the neck, stomach and hand, and left to die in a pool of his blood on the street where he fell in the Ita Oba area.

    The remains of the deceased were evacuated to a morgue in the town by policemen from the Sagamu Police Division.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Omolola Odutola, confirmed this, stating that the Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu, was already aware of the incident and had personally arrived in Sagamu to oversee an open investigation into the tragic killing.

     “According to the Sagamu Divisional Police Officer, on November 10, 2023, while on a vehicular patrol along Ewusi Street towards Ita Oba Roundabout, they intercepted information about a shooting incident. The report stated that a group of unidentified gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed a young man whose identity is currently unknown.

    “Upon receiving the information, the DPO immediately proceeded towards the location of the gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered the deceased lying in a pool of blood. The examination of the body revealed bullet wounds on the neck, stomach, and hand. Additionally, three expended cartridges were found at the scene.

    “The body of the deceased has been transported to a nearby morgue for further examination. No identification documents were found on the deceased, except for two large cowries.

    “The Ogun State Commissioner of Police is aware of the incident and has personally arrived in Sagamu to oversee an open investigation into this tragic killing. The police are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case and to allay fears.”

    Gunmen on motorcycles have struck in Sagamu, Ogun State, rupturing the peace of the town once again and killing one in the process. 

    The victim, an unidentified young man, was shot in the neck, stomach and hand and left to die in a pool of blood on the street where he fell in the Ita Oba area.

    Imo guber: Gunmen attack vote buyers, snatch over N1.5 million

    Suspected gunmen on Saturday afternoon invaded polling units at All Saints Anglican Cathedral and attacked vote buyers.

    The gunmen, numbering over 10, also snatched over N1.5 million being shared with voters at the four polling units within the cathedral premises.

    Our correspondent, who witnessed the development, saw the gunmen shooting consistently before swooping on the three men sharing the money.

    While the shooting was ongoing, some policemen attached to the place took to their heels, while INEC officials at the scene, lay down as they suspected ballot snatchers.

    Voters, party agents, and observers, including journalists also fled the voting centres.

    The hoodlums went straight to the four points where the monies were being shared and snatched away some of the money

    One of the party agents, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that each of the polling units in the place was given N1 million amounting to N4 million for the election.

    He said: “But we had already shared a considerable amount of money before the boys struck. I only shared about N500,000 before the hoodlums struck.”

    Gunmen kidnap UNTH doctor

    Aresident doctor attached to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, Dr. Orockarrah Orock, has been abducted by gunmen operating as kidnappers.

    The incident occurred last Saturday.

    It was learnt that Orock, attached to the Anaesthesia department, was last Saturday night kidnapped on the hospital premises while on duty.

    He, however, escaped from captivity around Four-Corners Junction, Enugu through the help of vigilance group operatives on the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway on Sunday morning.

    The Nation learnt that his abduction followed the stoppage of food supply to the hospital by vendors over non-payment by the hospital management, a development that has since forced the doctors and other medical workers to go outside to buy food at the risk of their lives.

    The development created tension among workers of the hospital when the news filtered in that Orock was abducted about 6:30pm. 

    It was gathered that the gunmen entered the hospital premises and hid near the Catholic chapel within the facility. They pursued the resident doctor on sighting his Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

    Gunmen kill four NSCDC operatives in Rivers

    Gunmen identified as pirates terrorising the Bakana waterways in Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State, have killed four operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

    Bodies of the deceased personnel were seen packed in a boat floating at the river bank in a viral video.

    Sympathisers identified some of the victims as Chibuzo and Chief Priest.

    It was gathered that two Muslims out of the four victims were buried according to Islamic rites while the others were deposited at the mortuary.

    When contacted, the corps’ Public Relations Officer (PRO), Olufemi Ayodele, could not be reached for his comments.

    “We asked questions as members of the nation’s parliament and we were satisfied with the answers provided.”

    Gunmen abduct speaker’s chief of staff

    Gunmen have abducted a journalist, Usman Sahabi, who is also the chief of staff to Adamawa State House of Assembly Speaker Bathiya Wesley.

    Sahabi was abducted about 1am yesterday from his home at Wurro-Chekke, a community in Yola South Local Government, according to sources.

    “Five gunmen stormed his home at 1am and forcefully entered his room, kidnapping him at gunpoint,” one of the sources said.

    Sahabi, an employee of Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), was reporting from the assembly before the speaker named him as his chief of staff.

    Sahabi’s brother told our correspondent before noon yesterday that the abductors had called the family, demanding N20million ransom.

    Police spokesman SP Sulaiman Nguroje confirmed the abduction.

    He said the command had deployed operational assets to ensure his rescue.
