    JUST IN: Gunmen kidnap PDP chairman in Edo

    Gunmen kidnapped the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, Mr Tony Aziegbemi on Friday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aziegbemi was kidnapped at a spot close to his residence at the Government Reservation Area in Benin City.

    His abduction happened less than a month after the party’s primary election was held ahead of the Sept. 21 governorship election in the state.

    A source told NAN that the abductors, operating in two Toyota Corolla cars, double-crossed the PDP chairman’s jeep at a speed bump in the area to effect the abduction.

    Aziegbemi was returning from a meeting with Gov. Godwin Obaseki when the incident took place, the source said.

    Narrating the ordeal, the driver to Aziegbemi said: “when we left Government House and heading home at about 11p.m, I noticed the cars trailing us, so I decided to take a diversion. We never knew they were kidnappers.

    “Few minutes later, the same cars appeared behind us at a speed breaker and blocked our car in the front.

    “Gunmen came out of the cars, pointed guns at us and ordered the chairman to enter their car and they took him away,’’ he said.

    He added that other gang members took over the chairman’s jeep and abandoned it on Sapele Road.

    Police spokesman in Edo, SP Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the abduction.

    “It is confirmed; it happened in the jurisdiction of New Etete Police Division, also known as Godwin Abbe Police Station; that is where it happened.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Mr Funsdo Adegboye, has ordered tactical teams to go after the hoodlums and we pray that by the grace of God we will rescue him unhurt,’’ he said. (NAN)

    Gunmen invade UNTH Enugu, abduct two persons

    Gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, yesterday invaded the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku Ozalla, Enugu State, and kidnapped a deputy director of nursing services, and a security man.

    The deputy director, said to be driving a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), was allegedly trailed to the premises of the hospital around 9am.

    Hospital sources said the gunmen shot directly at the woman’s car, forcing her to stop before taking her away.

    The vehicle was seen in a viral video abandoned, with bullet perforated glass on the front passenger side.

    One of the sources said the incident happened at the same location a doctor was abducted few weeks ago. “This is so sad; we are not safe at all in this hospital; everywhere is porous,” a distressed staff member lamented.

    JUST IN: Gunmen attack hotel in Ebonyi, kill one

    Suspected gunmen on Sunday, March 10, killed one person after attacking a hotel in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi state.

    The gunmen also burnt several vehicles in the attack.

    The hotel is reportedly owned by the council’s chairman, Ikechukwu Odono.

    Ohaukwu has been terrorized by assailants in the last few months, killing and burning properties.

    A few weeks ago, gunmen killed a POS operator in the area and carted away his cash, machine and cell phone.

    The hoodlums also killed a female security vigilante member of Ngbo local vigilante in the local government early last month.

    Police spokesperson in the state, Joshua Ukandu confirmed the attack.

    According to the Police spokesperson, several vehicles were set ablaze in the hotel by the gunmen during the attack.

    He stated that the police had swung into action, to unravel those behind the attack.

    The attack is coming barely 48 hours after gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Abakaliki killing 4 policemen and 2 civilians.

    • 16 killed by suspected herdsmen in Benue

    It was a bloody day in Ebonyi and Benue States yesterday after gunmen shot four police officers and two women dead while suspected herdsmen killed 16 people and set several houses on fire.

    The four police personnel were killed at a checkpoint in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State and the women were apparently hit by stray bullets on the Nwofe-Hiltop Road in the state capital.

    The herdsmen attack took place at Wandor, Mbaikyor, Mbalom council Ward of Gwer-East Local Government Area in Benue State 24 hours after a similar attack in Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

    No fewer than 30 people were killed in that incident.

    The Ebonyi attacks occurred at about 5am yesterday

    The incident happened at a checkpoint close to a filling station near Ebyia bridge on  Hilltop/ Nwoke road.

    The road is a major entrance into the city and also leads to Governor Francis Nwifuru’s country home.

    Police spokesperson, Joshua Ụkandu, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying: “Today at about 05:00am, operatives of the Command who were posted to duty at Hilltop stop and search/pin-down point along Nwofe Road, on the outskirts of Abakaliki, were attacked by armed hoodlums.”

    Mr Ụkandu claimed the attackers were suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia arm of the secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). But this claim could not be independently verified.

    He said the gunmen shot sporadically at the operatives who engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel.

    “In the ensuing gun battle, the hoodlums scampered and abandoned a pump action rifle which was recovered.

    However, four) of the operatives paid the supreme price, while two civilians were caught in the crossfire and killed,” he added

    The spokesperson noted that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Augustina Ogbodo, swiftly dispatched tactical teams to track down the fleeing hoodlums.

    16 killed in suspected hedsmen attack on Benue community

    It was gathered that the suspected herdsmen stormed Mbalom at about 10pm on Thursday when people were settling down in their various houses in the settlements.

    The invaders, according to an eyewitness Ujam Amase immediately opened fire and also set fire on houses.

    Property worth millions of naira including food stuff destroyed.

    “They killed children and women. After shooting them (victims), they used machetes to cut their bodies into pieces like meat,” said Amase who escaped from the scene of the attack.

    The names of the 16 corpses recovered are Peter Tion, Nyityo Kyoon, Iorfa Ukombor, Doopinen Awua, Tyoshaa Mkaanem and  Asan Ate

    Others are  Asough Ate, Terzungwe Asoo Ate, MWO Mbatsavbun Gbatar (rtd), John Ndahagh Tyohemba,Tertsea Ukombor, Akuma Kpenge, Abume Kpenge, Igba Byuan, Master Ter Byuan, Terzungwe Aulugh  and a young  boy whose name was not immediately known

    Survivors fled the village.

    The Benue Police Command said it had deployed personnel to the area. 

    Rep Achado condemns attack

    Member of the House of Representatives from Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency, Dr Asema Achado condemned the attack, describing it as unprovoked, barbaric and unacceptable!

    He sympathised with the families of the victims and said the attack was one too many, citing similar incidents in Sankera, Kwande and Agatu, with over 100 people recently murdered by suspected herders.

    He expressed worries that aside the spate of killings in Benue State, rising cases of kidnapping and displacement of people were already destroying economic activities, a development he fears can lead to widespread hunger and poverty in the coming months.

    Gunmen, driving in a Sienna Bus, fired at police officers conducting a stop and search operation in Port Harcourt, killing one officer in the process.

    SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Police Command in Rivers, condemned the attacks as senseless and unprovoked in a statement released on Friday.

    She revealed that one of the attackers was, however, killed during the ensuing exchange of gunfire.

    “The sad incident occurred at about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 21 when unidentified hoodlums targeted policemen from Operation Sting of the Rivers State Police Command.

    “While the officers were carrying out a stop and search at Eliozu flyover, they were attacked by the hoodlums traveling in a carton-coloured, glass-tinted Sienna bus.

    “The vehicle’s registration number remains unknown at this time.”

    Iringe-Koko said that the criminals fired directly at the unsuspecting officers without any provocation.

    “The attackers, arriving from the Rumuodumaya axis, opened fire on the police team, resulting in the tragic loss of one Inspector who valiantly sacrificed his life in the line of duty.

    “Undeterred, the police team responded bravely, engaged the attackers, and managed to neutralize one of them who was wearing a mask.

    “Unfortunately, the others managed to escape, but potentially sustaining gunshot wounds,” he added.

    The official stated that an investigation has been initiated by the command to apprehend the culprits, with the criminal gang responsible for the attacks already identified.

    She affirmed that the police force would not relent until all individuals involved in the despicable act are brought to justice.

    “Such acts of aggression against security forces impact the safety and security of society, hence, we shall remain resolute in our duty to preserve peace and protect lives.

    “The Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olatunji Disu, has pledged that those who perpetrate violence against law enforcement and civilians will face the full weight of the law.”

    “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the fallen Inspector, and we assure them that his sacrifice will not be in vain,” Iringe-Koko noted.

    The police spokesperson encouraged citizens to continue their lawful activities without fear, emphasising that the command would enhance its strategies to ensure their protection.

    Gunmen abduct corpse, family members in Enugu, demand N50m ransom

    Suspected kidnappers have abducted the corpse of late Ugwuanyi Israel from Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State.

    The deceased’s corpse was being conveyed from Lagos to Nsukka for funeral arrangements when the abduction occurred.

    The incident happened along 9th Mile Road in the Umuoka community in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

    The gunmen not only took Ugwuanyi’s body but also abducted all family members accompanying it.

    The family members, who were transporting Ugwuanyi’s body back home, fell victim to the kidnappers’ ambush.

    According to a family source: “His corpse was on its way from Lagos yesterday (Sunday) when the vehicle conveying his body was halted by kidnappers and people in the vehicle alongside the driver were all kidnapped at Umuoka Udi LGA of Enugu State.”

    Our correspondent gathered that the kidnappers had since established contact with the family and demanded a N50 million ransom.

    The source said: “They called Monday morning to inform us to look for N50 million.

    “Our fear is that the corpse will decompose before they release them. We don’t know what to do because our community people in Lagos spent so much money on the sickness of Israel”.

    She called on the security agencies and the state government to come to the aid of the people to save those in captivity.

    The Police are yet to comment on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

    JUST IN: Gunmen kill Imo-based lawyer

    Gunmen have reportedly murdered Victor Onwubiko, a legal practitioner based in Imo state and resident of Uturu in Abia state.

    The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night while the lawyer was returning to Abia State University, Uturu, where he resides.

    According to a source, the tragic event occurred along the Okigwe/Uturu road between 8 and 9 pm on Saturday, February 10, during a notable kidnapping incident.

    He said: “A lawyer who was later identified as Barr. Victor Onwubiko was killed by gunmen along Okigwe Road. He is based in Okigwe town in Imo state but is a resident of Abia State University Uturu.

    “He was returning to Abia State where he also resides when he was ambushed by gunmen and killed along Okigwe/Uturu road.

    “There have been series of kidnappings and killings along the road irrespective of the heavy security agents in the area.”

    The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, who confirmed the incident to the Nation on Monday, said: “We are on top of the situation, I am going to issue a press statement on it.”

    UPDATED: Gunmen kidnap six pupils, three teachers in Ekiti

    Gunmen have abducted six pupils and three teachers of a private school in Emure, headquarters of Emure local government area of Ekiti state.

    The incident happened the same day armed men shot dead two traditional rulers in the Oke-Ako axis of Ikole local government area of the state.

    It was gathered the school bus conveying the pupils and the teachers including the driver was waylaid by the kidnappers at about 5 pm on Monday, January 29, along Eporo-Ekiti road.

    Sources said the kidnappers accosted the bus conveying the victims at a bad spot on the road and whisked them to the forest, leaving the bus on the road.

    “They were kidnapped after their school bus was intercepted in Eporo Ekiti, at a location that shares a boundary with Ondo state on Monday evening,” the source said.

    The police spokesman, Sunday Abutu could not be reached for reaction as of the time of filing this report on Tuesday.

    Confirming the incident, the Ekiti state governor, Biodun Oyebanji urged the citizens of the state not to despair over the kidnapping of the school pupils and their teachers.

    He assured that efforts are in top gear to get the children and their teachers as well as the drivers rescued unhurt.

    The governor, who described the kidnapping of the school pupils, as callous and unacceptable, said nothing would be spared in the efforts to rescue them.

    According to a statement by the governor’s special adviser on media, security agencies in the state are already on the trail of the abductors with a mandate to bring the pupils and their teachers back safely.

    Governor Oyebanji said security is being stepped up across the state to flush out criminal elements from their hideouts.

    While calling on the citizens to remain calm and vigilant, he urged them to cooperate with security agencies, by making available relevant information to the authorities.

    BREAKING: Gunmen kill two Ekiti monarchs

     Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers on Monday evening killed  two traditional rulers in Ikole  Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

    The traditional rulers were the Elesun of Esun Oba Babatunde Ogunsakin and Olumojo of Imojo, Oba Samuel Olatunji..

    The monarchs were allegedly ambushed and killed by the arm-wielding attackers along Ipao-Irele-Oke Ako while returning from Ogbe, a neighboring town in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi state.

    It was reliably gathered that the vehicle conveying three  monarchs was accosted and Oba Ogunsakin and Oba Olatunji were killed while the Alara of Ara-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba escaped from the scene.

    Sources said the monarchs were returning from Ogbe in Kogi state in a vehicle drove by the Alara when the armed men struck.

    When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, Sunday Abutu said: “I will get the details and get back please.”

    The chairman of the Ajoni Local Council Development Area, Micheal Ogungbemi confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

    Ogungbemi, who condemned the attack, said the gunmen attempted to kidnap the three traditional rulers.

    Ogungbemi, who lamented the killing of the revered traditional rulers , said he had mobilised local security outfits including the Amotekun corps to comb the forest in a bid to arrest the perpetrators.

    According to him: “ I just returned from the scene of the unfortunate incident along Oke-Ako road and I can confirm that two traditional rulers; the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti and Onimojo of Imojo-Ekiti were killed by the gunmen who ambushed them.

    “ The Alara of Ara-Ekiti managed to escape from the incident, he was the one driving when the incident happened.

    “ We have evacuated the remains of the monarchs and deposited them in the morgue at the Ikole General Hospital.

    “ Our local security outfit and Amotekun have been drafted to the scene and the bush to arrest the bandits who committed this dastardly act.”

    Ogungbemi, who appealed to the Federal Government to approve usage of arms by the local security outfits in the State, said the attacks have been recurring in the area in the last few years.

    “ I am extremely sad with the situation and I want to call on the government to allow our local security network to carry arms because the traditional ruler who escaped told us the gunmen were carrying AK-47 and other dangerous weapons. These people are killing us and it is becoming unbearable.

    The secretary of Majority Obas of Ekiti Land (MOBEL) and Onikun of Ikun-Ekiti, Oba Olatunde David Olushola who condemned the killing of the traditional rulers said the time has come for the government to localize security system in order to address the growing insecurity in the land.

    “ The two traditional rulers were active members of our association(MOBEL) and it is very sad.

    “ We have been talking over the years but government is paying lip service to the issue of security. The time has come for them to localize the issue of security and sit down with the traditional rulers to secure our communities, we know what to do.

    “ This is not issue about money , government should immediately sit down with the traditional rulers for us to secure our land and maintain peace,” he said.
